Quit Saying Dads ‘Babysit’ Their Kids

n two separate occasions, I went away for overnight trips with my girlfriends. I heard it both times. “Who’s watching the kids?” I have three children with my husband. He has been a dad for almost a decade. We all live together. Why would “their father” not be the obvious answer? My husband has taken multiple weeklong business trips and I guarantee you that not a single person asked him who was watching his kids. It was assumed that I was. This mindset that a mother “parents” but a dad “babysits” has got to stop. People may not realize it, but by asking these questions they are perpetrating the ridiculous idea that fathers are incompetent when it comes to parenting alone. I’m thankful that my husband recognizes this nonsense and shuts it down. When someone once said, “Oh, you’re babysitting today?” he was quick to say,

“No. I’m with MY kids today.” That’s not to say he isn’t getting paid as if he were the babysitter. He gets paid in compliments I would never receive as a mother. He gets adoring looks from women and comments like, “what a great dad!” And he is! He is a great dad. But not because he sometimes supervises the children without my help. If that makes someone a “great dad,” the bar is set pretty low and we need to raise our standards. I have taken all three of my children to the pool, the zoo, the park, and the grocery store on my own and all I hear is, “you’ve got your hands full.” I’m not saying we should stop giving parents compliments. We all could use a little encouragement, because parenting is hard. Let’s just recognize it’s hard for ALL of us, because the responsibilities of parenthood should be evenly distributed and evenly praised. Y

The registration window is open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. weekdays, with one evening session on Tuesday, April 16, 5-7 p.m. A parent or guardian can go to their child’s assigned school and fill out a registration packet. Students zoned for Brenda Cowan, the new elementary school on Athens-Boonsboro Road, can register at Crossroads Church, 4128 Todds Rd. t’s the 20th year for the annual Maternity Fair hosted by The Women’s Hospital at St. Joseph East. The Fair is Saturday, April 27 at the Marriott Griffin Gate, 1800 Newtown Pike. UK to Stage ‘Skrek: The Musical’ April 11-14 at Guignol Theatre

he UK Department of Theatre and Dance brings to the stage a tale of a spiteful ogre with a heart of gold with performances of “Shrek the Musical” Thursday-Sunday, April 11-14 at the Guignol Theatre in the UK Fine Arts Building. Shrek had always preferred a life of solitude, staying to himself in the swamp he called home. Thanks to the stumbling ruler of the land, Lord Farquaad, the ogre finds himself on a mission to rescue Princess Fiona from a far-away place. As Shrek sets out to save the princess, he is surprised to come across someone very similar to himself. Starring as the ogre as layered as an onion is Evan Pride, a UK sophomore theatre major. Two Lexington children join the college cast as young Fiona and young Shrek. Returning to the Guignol Theatre as makeup director is Daniel Townsend. Townsend, who earned his BFA in Theatre in 2005, currently teaches at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. Nationally-known Len Pfluger directs the larger-than-life production. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday (April 11,12); 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday (April 13); and 2 p.m. on Sunday (April 14). Autism Group Starts Fundraiser With Local Restaurants

y Autism Tribe of Lexington will launch a “Grazing Awareness” campaign on Tuesday, April 2 when local, participating restaurants will donate a percentage of food and beverage sales to this non-profit organization. April is Autism Awareness Month. With a global mission of educating the public about autism through fundraisers such as this, My Autism Tribe started a weekly podcast last year that already has a global reach. “We are also working with several companies and board certified behavior analysts to create and execute a training program for certain organizations such as police and fire departments, and schools,” said Susan Scott, founder and executive director. Forgiveness: We All Merit a Second Chance eople generally tend to enjoy and appreciate “new beginnings,” especially children. New year, new friend, new shoes…. fallen snow, waiting for footprints and angels like an artist’s blank canvas.

Nowhere is the impact of a new beginning more powerful than after a mistake, a transgression or behavioral outburst. Think of a time when someone forgave you and gave you another chance. The greater the offense, the deeper was your gratitude – and the greater your desire to do things differently. You probably felt relief and hope… relief that you were forgiven and hope in yourself. Much has been made of forgiveness being “a gift you give yourself.” This is true for adults, but young children are incapable of that level of understanding. For children, being forgiven is the gift that means they are loved unconditionally and supported while they learn from their mistakes and carry forward the lessons those mistakes provide. Call it a “clean slate” or “another chance.” It may not seem like a big deal to grownups, but it is a very big deal for little people who are learning how the world works. Whatever a child has done, she can learn what to do to make things right. Everyone makes mistakes. She has another chance to do a better job. This is an encouraging place to be. t “Oh dear, you forgot that sand is not for throwing! We have to get out of the sandbox now, but you can try again after lunch.” t “I know you would like to stay and play 8 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

We are going home now, and we will see if Pete can come to our house another day.” Placing limits often provokes cries of sadness and anger from children. As a parent, stay calm, stay the course and stay optimistic. “You’re upset. I get it. You can try again later.” Your child gets the message that he did something wrong, that you love him and that he can try again. Children who don’t experience the encouragement of forgiveness and second chances have a harder time managing their emotions. It is more difficult for them to improve their behavior because they feel badly about themselves. After all, it’s hard to have a clear head for learning and a light heart for trying if you feel as though you have no chance of redemption. “When you forgive, you in no way change the past – but you sure do change the future.” ~ Bernard Meltzer, American radio talk show host. exington Children’s Theatre will present two shows in April: “Charlotte’s Web” and the 11th annual Celebrity Curtain Call Event, which this year features the play: “Treasure Island.” The Celebrity Curtain Call is a fund-raising event that features a cast of local celebrities plus food, drink, and live and silent auctions with items such as trips to New York City, the Bahamas and more. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 13 at 6:30 p.m. at LCT’S Main Stage. Early Bird tickets are $85 and regular priced tickets are $100. Group tickets are also available. Later in April, LCT will stage “Charlotte’s Web,” the classic tale based on the book by E.B. White. Secret Codes to Podcasting to Hip Hop: Middle School Summer Camps Have It All

f you’re looking for a fun summer camp for your children that will also help them match their passions to a future career, the Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning is the place for your middle schooler.

The Center has another lineup of intriguing camps that are offered in July and taught by local experts in fields ranging from applied math to hip hop to the arts. Here is the slate of camps with comments by Jessica Mohler, the Center’s Head of Communications and Marketing. Secrets & Codes: July 8-12, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Quiyana Murphy, Carnegie Center Math Specialist “People wonder how math can apply to a career other than being a teacher, but with all the emphasis on computer coding, math is essential,” Mohler said. “When you think screens, you should think math.” The “secrets” in the course title refers to the importance of online security. “Because coding needs more women, this course is especially helpful for girls,” Mohler said. Hip Hop: Lyricism & Leadership: July 8-12, 1-5 p.m. Devine Carama, Hip Hop Artist & Director of Believing in Forever, Inc. “Art can be a bridge for activism, and Devine is an excellent example of that,” Mohler said. This class shows how artists can use their skills for activism that serves their community. “Artists look at the world in a beautiful way and that can be appealing to businesses and non-profits,” Mohler said. Times and the Washington Post, and adds that people in all industries are “desperate for good writers.” Rockstar University: July 22-26, 1-5 p.m. Nathan Kentucky, internationally-touring musician From Bob Dylan to Lady Gaga, changing your name is Rockstar 101. So is the case of instructor Nathan Kentucky, who will show campers what goes on behind the scenes to create a rock star. Campers will tour recording studios, study stage lighting and sound staging. Kids Excel at Foreign Language Learning By: Emmanuel Caulk Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent

hen families choose the Fayette County Public Schools, they are selecting an educational experience designed to equip their children to excel in whatever future they can imagine for themselves. We open a world of possibilities for our students by providing a well-rounded curriculum that includes challenging core classes as well as instruction in art, music and world language. Today’s graduates will compete in a world where more than half the population is bilingual. The number of Spanish speaking residents in the U.S. in 2019 is larger than the entire population of Spain! FCPS offers world language instruction in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin and Spanish, plus dual language immersion in Spanish beginning in kindergarten and the International Baccalaureate Programme (IB) for students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Our district is one of only a few systems

in the nation where world language instruction is offered in grades kindergarten through 12 in three different target languages – Chinese, Japanese and Spanish. And Tates Creek elementary, middle and high school comprise one of fewer than 15 IB campuses in America. Students are studying world languages in 100% of Fayette County middle and high schools and 55% of elementary schools. Nearly 270 high school students are enrolled in AP or IB courses in Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Latin. We also serve more than 6,700 students from around the world whose families speak a language other than English at home. Our English language learners enrich our school community with more than 90 different languages. Two years ago, FCPS became the first district in Kentucky to offer a districtwide Seal of Biliteracy for its graduates, a nationally recognized endorsement that indicates a student has achieved advanced language skills. In 2018, we saw a 22% increase in students seeking the designation, and 87 stu-

dents were awarded the Seal of Biliteracy last year after demonstrating proficiency in both English and Chinese, French, German, Nepali, Spanish, Swahili or Urdu. The consulate of Spain has designated the district’s Spanish Immersion Program – at Liberty, Maxwell and Northern elementaries, Bryan Station Middle School and Bryan Station High School – as one of its “International Spanish Academies.” FCPS was also the first school district in North America to be named an “Exemplary Confucius Classroom” by the Chinese Ministry of Education. In addition to developing a lifelong ability to communicate with people from other countries, there are cognitive, academic and attitudinal benefits for students who acquire another language. Plus, economists believe that by 2020, proficiency in more than one language will be among the most important job skills. ertussis, or whooping cough, is still around. Worldwide each year, there are about 24.1 million cases of it and about 167,000 deaths from it. Outbreaks still occur in the U.S. and the disease could potentially be deadly even here. The bacteria that causes whooping cough is Bordetella pertussis. It clings to the cilia that line some of the cells in our upper respiratory tract. These finger-like microscopic projections help remove harmful substances from our airways. The bacteria release toxins that damage the cilia and make the upper airway swell. The infection often starts with cold-like symptoms: a mild cough, low-grade fever, and a runny nose. Babies may sometimes have apnea. They stop breathing and can even turn blue. About 1-2 weeks into the illness, the real coughing starts. uicide is the second-leading cause of death in teens nationwide and Kentucky, and the trend is only growing worse. Based on a recent review of child fatality data, rates are increasing with spikes in suicide numbers among children ages 10-14. According to a youth risk behavior survey in 2017, approximately 15% of high school students in Kentucky had seriously considered attempting suicide during the past 12 months. Males tend to be at a higher risk than females for suicide. Adolescence is already a difficult time for many teens who are faced with high stress situations and may feel overwhelmed by social, emotional and academic pressures. Many teens also engage in risk-taking behaviors such as experimenting with drugs, alcohol and sexual activity. With the growing use of technology and the internet, teens are also exposed to online risks such as cyberbullying, inappropriate sexual content and soliciting. There are various risk factors associated with teen suicide. While most teens may have a history of mental health issues, there may be more immediate risk factors such as agitation, intoxication or a recent stressful life event such as the end of a relationship or academic failure.

What Are the Risk Factors? t A family history of suicide or suicide attempts t Mental health problems in parents

t Personal traumatic life events such as physical or sexual abuse t Mental health problems such as depression, bipolar disorder, substance use disorders, psychosis, post-traumatic stress disorder or an eating disorder t History of non-suicidal self-harm injuries t Teens with behavioral issues such as aggression or severe anger t Teens who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning or transgender t Excessive internet use and exposure to media with suicidal content.

What Can Parents Do? t Keep open, honest and constant communication with your teen. It is important to let your teenagers know that they can talk to you about anything and that you are committed to discussing all topics of concern without judgment. Let them know that they are not alone. Share your own experience as a teen. t Supervise your teen’s use of technology and educate them about internet safety. t Be attentive to your teen’s behavior. Abrupt, dramatic or severe changes in behavior can be strong indicators of serious mental health issues. t Be aware of some of the red flags that could indicate a mental health issue: excessive sleeping beyond usual teenage fatigue, difficulty in falling asleep, loss of self-esteem or dramatic changes in performance at school. t Seek immediate help when teens make statement such as “There is no point

Volleyball Star Goes West to Stanford

ne of the nation’s top 10 volleyball recruits, McKenna Vicini of Lexington Catholic High fulfilled a long-time goal when she committed to Stanford. One of the nation’s top academic universities, Stanford has ruled women’s volleyball, winning eight national championships and reaching the Finals 16 times in 37 years. But that’s not why McKenna first fixed her sights on Palo Alto. You can thank Disney’s “High School Musical” for that. “Actually, I first heard of Stanford when Gabriella was going there,” she said with a laugh about the lead female character in the Disney classic. It didn’t take long for McKenna to learn about Stanford’s powerhouse program. Even though McKenna came relatively late to volleyball, her recruiting process began early. She received her first recruiting letter in seventh grade, from Illinois, and then Coach Kevin Hambly. By her sophomore year, McKenna was being recruited by UK, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Purdue, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Carolina and UCLA, among others. That same year, Stanford’s long-time coach, John Dunning, retired. Stanford’s new coach? Kevin Hambly, who immediately added McKenna to the team’s wish list. She committed as soon as she was accepted to Stanford.

The Cardinal is getting one of the country’s top players. McKenna is a 6-foot-2 middle blocker who recorded more than 1,000 kills, a Lexington Catholic record. As a senior, she was first-team AllCity, All-State and the Region 11 Player of the Year. As a freshman and sophomore, she made the USA National Youth Training Team and worked out at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado. McKenna should have no trouble with Stanford’s academics. She has 3.96 GPA, has taken nine A.P. classes, and scored 30 on her ACT. A National Honor Society member, she was named the KHSAA volleyball Student Athlete of the Year. “She’s a hard worker and excellent at time management,” her mother Cheryl said. This is a trait she shares with her three older brothers – David (32), Nick (29) and Jake (24). McKenna is considering human biology as a college major, which will give her numerous career options. Back on the volleyball court, McKenna’s proudest achievement so far – next to going to Stanford – is helping with the development of Lexington Catholic’s program. “Being part of the program for the past five years has been exciting,” she said. “We’re competitive and the future is bright.” Just like hers. s it only coincidence that Shearer Elementary in Winchester sits on Broadway? After all, music teacher Collin Berner has turned the school into a miniBroadway production company. In March, the school finished a sixperformance run of Disney’s “The Lion King Kids,” which played to rave reviews and sold-out audiences at Leeds Center for the Arts in Winchester. The cast of 66 children sang, danced and acted, displaying skills beyond their years. “We had a ridiculously talented class of fourth graders to lead the show,” said

Berner, who added that the show was fully costumed and choreographed. “I heard comments that compared our show favorably with middle school and high school productions,” Berner said. This year’s show was the sixth that Berner has staged, following “Annie,” “The Aristocats,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “101 Dalmatians” and “Aladdin.” Asked about the quality of the shows, Principal Mark Rose said: “They’re amazing. It’s unbelievable what these kids can do. These shows are a great thing for our school and our community as a whole.” Some of the profits from the shows go back into the music classroom, which features two pianos, a guitar, a full array of percussion instruments and a wall full of brightly colored ukuleles, paid for by school shows. In his 13th year at Shearer, Berner teaches five classes a day and sees every student in school, showing all that there is more to music than just rap and country.

“My main goal is to develop their musical sensitivity and open up their world to classical, show tunes, camp songs, folk music and more,” he said. All kids can sing, Berner said, so that’s what they do in class. Along with learning musical concepts like tempo and rhythm, kids play musical games and sing rounds like “Row Row Row Your Boat.” Sounds like fun. “It is, but we take music seriously here, too,” he said. “I try to create an encouraging, supportive environment.” “When I first observed [Berner] I was so enthralled with his lesson that I was hanging on every word he said,” Rose said. “He knows the kids, knows the flow of the lesson and knows how to assess to make sure kids are learning.
