Letter From Katie

Vol. 22 Issue 6

My Father Really Does Know Best

M

y 7-year-old can drive us crazy asking questions. “How does an airplane stay in

the sky?” “How big can a shark grow?” “How long would it take to walk to France?” (That’s a tough one to answer for anyone.) But I recently realized that I don’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to asking parents too many questions. My text message history with my dad looks something like this: “Hi Dad. How should I cook scallops?” “Just wondering, how often do I really need an oil change?” “Hey Daddy, will you please review my taxes and make sure I did this right?” I’m 30 years old but whenever I have a problem or a question about life skills, my first instinct is still to ask my dad.

I’m aware that I could Google most everything I need to know. YouTube tutorial videos exist for just about anything you can think of. But I will never trust Google more than I do my dad. A few weeks ago I was hashing out a problem with a home repair and I whined to my father, “Just tell me what to do!” He laughed and said, “I’ll never tell you what to do. But I can tell you what I would do.” That is why I keep going back to him. He doesn’t butt in with advice but gives it freely when I ask for it. My parents crafted the perfect blend of being supportive without being pushy. Because of that, they will always be my first call when a problem pops up. Happy Father’s Day, Daddy. Thank you for always answering my questions. Y

2018 Summer Camp & Activities Fair

COVER MODEL CONTEST

I

By Katie Saltz

t’s entirely possible that you have looked at a cover of Lexington Family Magazine before and thought, “Hey! I know that kid.” That is because our cover models are always children local to Central Kentucky. During the annual Lexington Family Magazine Summer Camps & Activities Fair in April, we host a Cover Model Contest. Professional photographer Hanna Salonen of Happy Photography Company brought out the best in more than 100 children at this year’s Fair on April 14 at Lexington Christian Academy. From infants to teenagers, beautiful Bluegrass kids struck a pose and said “cheese” for their chance to be a cover model. With so many great faces to choose from, it is a difficult task. We narrowed it down and selected eight children to appear on the cover of our magazines over the next year. Be sure to look for the new issue of Lexington Family Magazine at the beginning of each month. You may just see a familiar face. Y

2018 Season presented by

Responsive vs. Reactive Parenting

W

hen you find yourself frequently “reacting” to your children’s behavior, your “fight, flight, freeze or faint” response is being triggered. You are at risk for chronic stress and your mental and physical health can suffer.

When you aren’t at your best, it is harder for your children to be at theirs. Before you are about to blow, push your invisible “Pause Button.” Take a deep breath or step away to calm yourself. Then decide what you want your child to learn that will serve her well when she is older. Choose to respond in a helpful way instead of reacting. Remember that mistakes are just that: unintended accidents. Ask your child: Y What did you learn? Y What will you do differently next time? Y Is there anything you can do to make things right? Here are some examples: 1) Bobby knocks his cup off the table with his elbow. Reaction: “For crying out loud! Look at that mess! You’re so clumsy!” Response: “Uh-oh! Here is a towel. I’ll help you clean it up.” Once the milk is cleaned up, ask, “What did you learn about putting your cup on the edge of the table?” “Not to.” Smile and nod. “That’s right. So, what will you do differently next time?” “Put it behind my plate.” “Good idea! Thank you for helping clean up. Let’s try again with this cup.” 2) Ashley throws a ball that knocks over a lamp and breaks it. Reaction: “What have I told you about throwing a ball in the house? Go to your room and don’t come down till I tell you!!” 10 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

Response: Get close and gently ask, “What did you learn there?” “Not to throw the ball in the house?” “That’s right. Now you understand why we have that rule. What can you do differently so we don’t lose any more lamps?” “Only throw the ball outside?” “That’s sounds like a great plan. Can you remember?” “Yes!” Then, help Ashley clean it up. Allow her to be part of the solution either helping to repair the lamp or contributing part of her allowance toward replacing it. She might also offer to do some special jobs to make up for breaking it. Yes, it takes more time to choose a helpful response and implement these changes. The payoff is a more peaceful, less stressed family. You are helping your child learn not to fear her mistakes, to accept responsibility and to be willing to make things right. She learns to recognize what she needs, and she finds healthy ways to ask for help when she needs it. Because you act with respect, children learn how to be respectful. The empathy you offer them helps them to learn empathy for others. That’s something worth pausing for! Fayette County Public Schools

Gifted/Talented Programs Excel By: Emmanuel Caulk

Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent

O

ur work in the Fayette County Public Schools is guided by two moral imperatives. One is to accelerate the learning of students who are approaching proficiency; the other is to accelerate learning for students who have already reached proficiency and challenge them to become globally competitive. Classroom instruction must meet the needs and learning styles of all students, assisting struggling learners while including enrichment, depth and complexity for students who are ready to move ahead. As part of my entry plan work when I was hired in 2015, our school board commissioned an external evaluation of the services the district was providing for students who are identified as gifted and talented. The extensive program review included data analysis, classroom observations, focus groups, interviews and surveys of hundreds of students, families and teachers.

We were delighted to hear from the national experts that our program offerings are among the best in the nation, consistently producing outstanding student achievements. Our district had 2.5 times the national rate of students earn perfect ACT scores this year, and all four of Kentucky’s honorees in the 2018 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program attend Fayette County Public Schools. Although our district accounts for only 6% of the students in Kentucky, 16% of the state’s National Merit Semi Finalists are from FCPS. The report also concluded that we should identify more students for services, broaden the areas of giftedness we serve, and expand our offerings so that students could receive accelerated instruction in their home schools. Since then, we have invested $540,000 to hire more G/T teachers, which has allowed us to increase the number of schools with G/T teachers five days a week from four in 2015 to 14 this year. We have also expanded the areas of

gifted and talented services we provide to include art, creativity, dance, drama, general intellectual ability, leadership, and specific academic aptitude in language arts, math, science and social studies. This intentional investment has enabled us to grow the number of fourth and fifth graders identified for service by 117% in just two years. This year, we have 2,394 gifted and talented elementary school students. Next year, we expect to have 3,415. Our 2018-19 budget includes an additional $540,000 investment in teachers so that we can continue this expansion of services into our middle schools and ensure that every elementary school has a G/T teacher at least two or three days a week. Delivering on the promise of excellence in FCPS requires that we not only challenge our students academically, but that we also provide opportunities for them to grow as individuals, to discover their unique gifts and to help them become the best versions of themselves. That’s excellence you can’t buy. Y

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding: What A Long, Strange Trip It’s Been! By Doraine Bailey

E

ver wonder how breastfeeding practices have changed over the years? Well, on May 31, I retired from 30 years of breastfeeding promotion work at the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department. So let’s look back at the long, strange trip surrounding this most human of behaviors! In 1987 when I started, WIC (Women, Infants and Children) was known as “the formula program.” Nationally back then, 52% of women started out breastfeeding – in Kentucky, it was only 24%. Breastpumps looked like either a bicycle horn or two interlocked tubes, and they were inefficient and uncomfortable. In the whole state, there were only five International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) – (one in Lexington). La Leche League was the main place to get breastfeeding information and help, though they faced backlash as “lactivists.” Moms could still receive drugs to “dry up” their milk (before we knew that these medications could also cause strokes), and were encouraged to feed on each breast only for five minutes every three hours. Is it any wonder that moms didn’t meet their breastfeeding goals?

and reducing the risk for diabetes, obesity and cancer. Research has given us a clearer picture of breast physiology, milk production, and impacts of mother’s lifestyle on supply. Moms used to think they had to drink milk to make milk. Now we know you eat foods full of soluble fiber to increase supply! Oatmeal, anyone? Babies have become a bit less mysterious, too. We’ve used ultrasound to see inside a baby’s mouth as he nurses. We’ve standardized measuring for tongue-tie and have trained dentists and others to safely treat it. We understand that newborns breastfeed (seemingly) all the time because they have a body rhythm of one hour awake and one hour asleep. We keep moms and babies together at birth because it is good for them. Breastpumps have improved in portability, comfort and efficiency, and are a covered benefit in most health insurance plans. Changes to WIC in 1989 earmarked money specifically for breastfeeding promotion. Hospital practices to improve breastfeeding, the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, began in 1992. The Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 protected moms from losing their jobs while on maternity leave. The American Academy of Pediatrics published its first position statement supporting breastfeeding in 1995, and most other health care associations have followed suit. Employers gradually provided support for their breastfeeding employees, but it wasn’t until 2010 that hourly-waged workers’ rights were placed into law in the Fair Labor Standards Act. In 2006, Kentucky

In 2017, 82.5% of mothers started out breastfeeding in the U.S., and 75% in Kentucky... up from 24% in 1987.

S

ince then, we’ve benefitted from significant research into breastfeeding and its health implications for mothers and babies. A breakthrough study in 1992 showed that hospitalized babies who received expressed milk for only six weeks had significantly better health and IQs than formula-fed babies when measured later. No health provider should question the well-documented protections of breastfeeding in reducing common childhood infections, in promoting a well-functioning immune system for mom and baby, in facilitating a strong maternal-child bond, 14 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

joined other states in affirming that mothers had a right to breastfeed in public. In 2014 the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled that breastfeeding is covered under civil rights law in the Pregnancy Discrimination Act.

B

ut the more things change, the more they stay the same. Mothers tell me, “The doctor said my milk wasn’t any good after three months.” I get calls about mothers being harassed when they breastfeed in public, or when they want to express milk during their work shift. I hear from mothers whose work hours have been cut or from women who were fired when they asked for their legallyprotected accommodations. Nevertheless, moms have persisted! In 2017, 82.5% of mothers started out breastfeeding in the U.S., and 75% in Kentucky! We have nearly 175 IBCLCs in Kentucky, and many more lactation counselors and specialists. Four hospitals are Baby-Friendly designated. Mother-to-Mother support is available through La Leche League, WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors and Facebook groups. We even have a Rock and Relax area at the Kentucky State Fair! Although I’m leaving public health, I’m not leaving breastfeeding. I’ll still be around to answer questions, educate elected officials, organize events and support women in achieving their breastfeeding goals. So please keep in touch. How Long Should I Wait Before Getting Pregnant Again?

S

By Katie Saltz

mall age gaps between children affect more than just the sibling dynamic. It also affects a mother’s health. Too little time between pregnancies can have serious ramifications for a woman’s body. After pregnancy, a mother needs time to: t Build up a supply of essential nutrients in the body, such as iron and folic acid. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, a baby gets the nutrients they need from the mother’s body. Not having sufficient vitamins and minerals can lead to birth defects for a baby, and health issues for the mother. t Heal from inflammation. Even after the swelling and bruising of 16 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

birth has gone away, your uterus needs time to heal inside your body. t Reset the microbiome of the birth canal. The microbiome is a group of microorganisms in the birth canal and is believed to play a part in premature birth. The standard recommendation for time between pregnancies is 18 months. That means not getting pregnant again until your baby is at least 1 1/2 years old. This decreases the risk of premature birth and allows mom to fully recover before taking on the physical demands of another pregnancy. So when baby fever strikes, talk to your prenatal care provider about pregnancy spacing and determine the best option for your family planning needs. Y

Sayre Revives Football

with an NFL Star Chad Pennington Will Lead Spartans’ First Team Since 1977

hat better way to revive a football program after more than four decades than to bring in a former NFL star quarterback to lead the program? That’s exactly what Sayre School has done by hiring Chad Pennington to head the football program that will play its first games since the sport was dropped in 1977. Sayre will play a nine-game schedule in the fall – four freshman-sophomore games, four JV games and one varsity game. The program will consist of players in eighth through 12th grade. Pennington, 41, played for 11 years in the NFL and is the only player to win the Comeback Player of the Year award twice (2006, 2008). In 2008, he finished second in the MVP voting to Peyton Manning. At the time of his retirement, Pennington was the NFL’s all-time leader in career completion percentage (66.0%) among quarterbacks with at least 1,500 pass attempts. In college, Pennington starred at Marshall in West Virginia, leading the Thundering Herd to three straight conference titles. His teammate at Marshall, Randy Moss, became an All-Pro receiver in the NFL and played for 15 seasons. After his retirement from the NFL and one season as a TV broadcaster, Pennington and his wife searched for a home that was near his family in Tennessee and hers in West Virginia. They also wanted a community with good schools and was big enough to provide opportunity for their three boys but not too big. Central Kentucky met all their criteria, 18 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

and they moved to Versailles in 2012. Pennington became a youth coach right away, coaching at The Lexington School, where he will remain involved while coaching the Sayre program. Pennington’s oldest son, Cole, a

Sayre Athletic Director Rich Little said he favors the addition of football to the school’s sports offerings. “Not only does football promote teamwork, sportsmanship and resiliency, it also provides a unique athletic experience for a number of students who do not participate in other sports,” he said. “Football is also a sport that brings people together and builds community.” Pennington expects to hire a staff of six for a

14-year-old freshman, will play on the Sayre team, and Luke, 11, plays at TLS. Gage is 9 and also attends TLS. Sayre players start workouts in June and will play for a coach who is as committed to safety and academics as he is to football. “As youth and high school coaches, we are the ‘keepers of the game,’” Pennington said. “We must change the way we teach the fundamentals to our young players as well as place a major focus on the structure and organization of our practice schedules.” Both his parents were educators, so Pennington appreciates the relationship between athletics and the classroom. “Sports teaches the kinds of skills that educators today appreciate: Resilience, courage, time management, dealing with failure,” he said. “Sports are performance driven and that is a great teacher.” In that vein, Pennington will encourage

program of approximately 30 players or more. With 137 boys in 8th-12th grade, Sayre will compete as a 1-A school. Its first varsity game comes Oct. 5 against Jenkins High at an equidistant neutral field at Kentucky Christian in Grayson, Ky. Sayre will play a full 10-game varsity schedule in 2020 and will be eligible for post-season play the following year. “We love Sayre and I’m very excited to partner with the school,” Pennington said. “This is a fun challenge, and it’s important to build the right infrastructure and foundation and think about what’s best for the future. “I’m looking forward to partnering with the entire school community. We can celebrate as a school as we watch our kids compete.” Y

How Dads Can Bond With Babies

M

uch has been said and written about the bond between mothers and their babies. Fathers can also bond with their babies. Their presence and participation in the lives of their infants can be a positive factor in their development and for the family in general. A father’s part in a baby’s relationship can start before the infant is even born. Dads can talk to the baby while she is still inside the mother’s abdomen – Infants are thought to recognize a dad’s voice in this situation once they are born. Dads can help research different things to help get ready for the newborn period and can help get the nursery environment in order. They can go to parenting and breastfeeding classes with the future mothers to learn processes ahead of time. Once the baby is born, dads can assist mothers with breastfeeding, changing the baby, dressing and undressing the baby, and in helping put the baby to sleep.

ver the innovator and admirer of cutting edge technology, Dr. Rick Graebe wasted no time adding a new device to his practice’s toolbox – RightEye. “The day the new portable model was available they shipped it to us,” said Graebe, a behavioral optometrist in Versailles. The new model features special software that helps measure eye tracking, a crucial component of the visual system. Students who struggle to read often have perfect 20-20 vision, but their ability to point and track their eyes along the page is underdeveloped. These students are ideal candidates for Vision Therapy, a kind of physical therapy for the eyes, brain and body and a specialty of Dr. Graebe’s practice. Brendan: A HardHitting Role Model

W

Brendan Hord SCHOOL: Dunbar High GRADE: 12 SPORT: Baseball ACADEMICS: Brendan has a 4.85 weighted GPA in the Dunbar MathScience-Technology Center. He also scored 34 on the ACT and has taken 13 A.P. classes. PARENTS: Melia & Chuck

ith his Popeye forearms and bulging GPA, Brendan Hord of Dunbar High epitomizes the Scholar Athlete ideal. The 18-year-old senior is the hardhitting catcher/designated hitter on the baseball team and carries a 4.85 weighted GPA in the academically rigorous Math-Science-Technology Center at Dunbar. Brendan scored 34 on his ACT, has taken 13 A.P. classes, and is a member of the National Honor Society, plus the Spanish, Science and Beta Honor Societies. He volunteers at the Lexington Soup Kitchen and Catholic Action Center, and served as a judge at the Fayette County Public Schools science fair. He is the senior class vice president and was the Homecoming and Prom King. And here’s what his baseball coach had to say about him. “He’s the most well-rounded, unbelievable young man I have ever met,” Seth Knight said. “He is the best teammate a player could hope for, and his work ethic motivates those around him. “I simply cannot say enough about this young man. He is one of a kind and deserves every honor that could be bestowed upon him.” Along with his leadership (Brendan is captain of the baseball team), the 5-foot-11, 210-pound slugger supplies the Bulldogs with a potent bat in the

middle of the order. He is hitting .408 and his 1.237 OPS consists of a .542 on-base percentage and a .695 slugging percentage. Brendan has been the envy of college scouts because of his baseball skills and because his academic strengths translate to big academic scholarships, and he is a strong leader on and off the field. In the fall, he will attend the University of Kentucky in the College of Engineering with a Presidential Scholarship, which provides full tuition. He will major in engineering and premed. At Dunbar, his capstone project, in cooperation with UK science researchers, involved the recovery time difference between patients undergoing frontal and posterior shoulder surgeries. Always a straight-A student, Brendan mixes academic talent with a monster work ethic. “Often, he comes home from practice and works well past midnight on his homework,” his father Chuck said. Said his mother Melia: “He’s very disciplined, organized and a great time manager. He’s also meticulous and a perfectionist.” Whether he brings those qualities to engineering or medicine, Brendan has one career wish. “I’ve been playing baseball since I was 4 and it was love at first sight,” he said. “I have always pictured myself doing something in sports.” Y
