Out of the Mouths of Babes: Words of Love
M
ispronouncing words and phrases is common among young children. My younger kids, ages 2 and 3, often mix up their parts of speech or pronounce their R’s as W’s. They may sound slightly like Elmer Fudd, but I find it adorable. Recently, I began to notice the way my little ones phrased things and contemplated the meaning behind them. For example, instead of saying, “Don’t leave,” when I am heading out the door, my son will say, “Don’t be gone.” That hit me hard. Parents sometimes think the hardest part is getting out the door, whether it’s at preschool drop-off or the end of the bedtime routine. But to our kids, the hardest part is our absence that lasts for hours. His words reminded me that I need to instill in him that even though I’m not always by his side, I will always come back. My youngest is just starting to put together short sentences. She’ll suddenly
appear at my feet, reach out her chubby arms and say, “I wanna hold you.” Even though I am the one lifting her up and bearing her weight in my arms, she says that she is holding me. It’s not a request to be held. It’s an offer from her. My oldest is now 8, but I still remember when she was a toddler and I had plenty of cute nicknames for her. I would often call her “baby doll.” One day she delighted me by giving me the pet name “Mommy doll.” That silly nickname meant the world to me. She recognized pet names as endearments and graced me with one of my own. Kids say the darndest things, alright, but don’t be so quick to write them off as silly mistakes. Take a minute to really think about those nonsense words or phrases. You may find more meaning than you expected. Y

How to Help a Child Adjust to a New Baby hildren experience a kaleidoscope of reactions to bringing another child into the family, ranging from excited and happy to sad and teary to angry and uncooperative – sometimes all on the same day.
Influences on how well children accept the arrival of a new sibling include their age, the number of children in the family, the quality of existing relationships, the parents’ health, the presence or absence of routines, and the amount of support available for mom and dad, to name a few. There is no one “best way” to navigate the ins and outs of bringing another baby home, but here are a few helpful ideas to get you started. t Have well-established routines around morning, bedtime and meals, and stick with them as well as you can. t Have a list of people you can rely on when you feel overwhelmed. Call them early. Don’t wait until you are drowning. t Talk about the new baby beforehand. t When you come home from the hospital, have a gift for your child “from the baby” and open it together. t “Practice” caring for a baby with a doll or stuffed animal. t Greet your child with open arms (someone else holding the baby) when you first see your child. Give him a big cup of love. t Avoid breaking away from your child the instant the baby cries. Instead, pause for a moment and say, “Derrick is crying! I wonder what he wants.” Allow your child to help solve the problem as you check it out together. If she doesn’t want to join you, that’s ok. You can report back soon. t Spend 10-15 minutes of special oneon-one time every day with your older child 6 | www.lexingtonfamily.com
(or children). This time will go quickly and is one of the best ways to prevent off-track behavior. t Be supportive of your child’s feelings and listen deeply. Acknowledge that yes, it must be so hard to share Mommy/Daddy. Yes, I can see why you’d like to send her back. We did have a lot of fun together when it was just the two of us. What do you miss most? Can we do that this afternoon? t Welcome your child’s assistance in any form it takes, even if it doesn’t really help. Graciously thanking her for handing you a baby wipe gives her a sense of belonging and helps her feel valuable. Until the new baby arrived, your child had a very clear idea of who he was and where he belonged. He has been the sole recipient of all of your time, attention and love for as long as he can remember. His world has changed. He is grieving, confused and looking for a new way to belong. Try to see everything through your older child’s eyes, and then imagine how you would like to be treated. Most of all, keep your heart compassionate and open. Changing of the Guard Una MacCarthy
F
or a smooth transition at the top, The Lexington School could find no better replacement for Chuck Baldecchi than Una MacCarthy, longtime Assistant Head of School. Working side by side for 15 years, the two have piloted TLS to impressive success, a trajectory Baldecchi is certain MacCarthy will continue. “I have always appreciated Una’s thoughts and views on school and community,” he said. “I have depended upon her advice and counsel.” Like her predecessor, MacCarthy started her career as an English teacher and joined TLS in 1996 where she has served as the Head of the Middle School as well as Assistant Head of School. Originally from Glasgow, Ky., MacCarthy attended high school at The Masters School in New York, earned her bachelor’s degree at UK and her master’s at the University of South Carolina. She is married to a TLS alum, Reid Freeman, and the last of their four children will graduate from TLS this year. One of the first tasks for MacCarthy, who officially begins July 1, is overseeing the school’s new strategic plan. “This is a wonderful way for a new Head to begin,” she said. “The strategic planning process allows the entire TLS community to have a voice in shaping the goals and priorities for the next five years.” In terms of educational philosophy, MacCarthy shares the same priorities as Baldecchi. “Mistakes can be painful but kids learn from those,” she said. “If the community is supportive, like it is at TLS, that’s when we can really help a child grow. “In these moments, students learn to brush themselves off and get back at it. an important part of success.” MacCarthy ended the school year with a favorite assignment – the annual eighth-grade class trip to the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park where all technology is left behind. Students and faculty sleep in tents and sit around the campfire enjoying old-school activities such as playing cards. “Spending the last week before graduation with the friends

s The Lexington School says goodbye to Chuck Baldecchi, the popular, longtime Head of School will be missed for much more than his trademark bow ties and 1,000watt smile. After 15 years at TLS, Baldecchi is leaving to become the Head of School at Charlotte Latin School in North Carolina. It’s a testament to Baldecchi’s popularity that “Pinpoints,” the
TLS Head of School Una MacCarthy with her predecessor, Chuck Baldecchi and faculty who helped shape your childhood is a wonderful way to end TLS,” MacCarthy said. “Getting away from technology and social media in a place that is so different geographically shifts everybody’s perspective. “All of these kids are leaving TLS so not only are they dangling their feet over the Grand Canyon, they’re dangling them over their childhood.” MacCarthy is impressed every year she takes the trip with the maturity of the TLS students. “They really are impressive,” she said. “It is one of the many things about TLS that makes me love this place.” Y
school’s in-house publication, dedicated its entire current issue to him. Effusive praise came from everyone from the President of the Board to faculty, staff, former students and the folks in the lunch room. Under his guidance, the school moved into a new Lower School Building, celebrated its 50th anniversary, opened The Learning Center for students with dyslexia and broke ground on the new Academic Building. TLS stabilized its enrollment, expanded athletics and the arts offerings, started an intramural program and was ranked the No. 2 private school in the nation. Baldecchi also oversaw the
renovation of Scarlet Gate, the boyhood home of James Lane Allen that sits next to campus. Baldecchi, his wife Erin and their children Bella, 16, Alex, 14, and Cade, 12, moved in and hosted countless social events there. Along with core academics, TLS teaches 21st century life skills – Mission Skills – such as teamwork, creativity, ethics, resilience, curiosity and time management. In fact, Baldecchi leads the Independent School Data Exchange, which produced the Mission Skills Assessment that measures those traits. “Kids learn from making mistakes,” Baldecchi explained. “These are teachable moments, and good teachers take advantage of that.” No wonder the school motto is “We Teach Courage.” Children have to feel safe first in order to take risks. “That’s why a warm, loving community is so important,” Baldecchi said. “Kids have to feel that if they take a risk, they won’t be judged or called stupid.” Because that’s the kind of community Baldecchi has built at TLS, there is time in the classroom for “messiness.” “Order is important but it can’t be all about order,” he said. “Teachers guide learning, they don’t just provide answers.” In that way, the school builds future leaders. From first grade on, students routinely are asked to lead their classmates in various activities and to speak in front of the class. Public speaking is a foundational skill for leaders. “Because we take time to stretch those muscles,” Baldecchi said, “I’m not surprised we produce leaders.” Memorable words from a great leader himself. High-Tech Ways to Track Your
I
Fert i l ity By Katie Saltz
t’s not always easy to tell the best time to get pregnant. Women who can’t rely on the calendar method to be accurate are unable to predict their fertility. Thankfully, technology has come a long in way in helping women track their most fertile days. Here are some different options for tracking your fertility when you’re ready for a baby.
Ovulation Apps Popular apps like Fertility Friend, Glow and Clue require the user to enter data about her cycle and then will predict her ovulation and most fertile days. Most of these apps are free for the basic features and offer paid upgrades.
Home Ovulation Tests At-home tests resemble pregnancy tests in that they measure hormone levels in urine to detect ovulation status. A rise in luteinizing hormones signals that the ovary will soon release the egg, so women can predict their fertile days. These tests can be purchased at most drug stores but are one-time use only.

sensor tucked into an armband; and Himama, a sensor worn against the chest. As soon as you decide to start trying for a baby, set up an appointment with your prenatal care provider. She can help ensure your body is healthy and ready for pregnancy, and guide you in case you encounter difficulty conceiving. Y
Fertility monitors are digital devices that predict ovulation based on electrolyte levels in saliva, hormone levels in urine or your basal body temperature. These devices can store ovulation information for several menstrual cycles and often sync with their own app. Many non-invasive wearable thermometers are available now that eliminate the need for poking, prodding, peeing or spitting. These devices predict ovulation by tracking basal body temperature, resting heart rate, skin temperature, blood flow or other fertility indicators. Some popular options include Ava, a bracelet worn at night; Yono, an earbud to be worn while sleeping; Tempdrop, a

Identifying Kinds of Infant Crying
Y
oung babies cry. It is their first means of communication with us and is therefore an important part of infancy. They can cry up to two hours a day, sometimes even more. There are different types of infant cries and things that can be done to help stop them. t The hunger cry is usually preceded by an infant’s hands going to the mouth or by lip smacking. If ignored, the baby will start a short and low-pitched cry. If further ignored, it will escalate into a similar but stronger anger cry. Feeding the baby will usually stop this. Sometimes, though, the baby may just want to suck for comfort after she is already full. t A pain cry consists of a sudden, long, high-pitched shriek followed by a flat wail. 18 | www.lexingtonfamily.com
The baby in this case may have a wet or soiled diaper, or be too cold or hot. He may want to be swaddled. It is possible that there is just too much visual, auditory or movement stimulation going on and he wants it to stop. A tired baby may also scream like this. Sometimes a pain cry can indicate that something is hurting the baby. He may be getting sick. If no ready explanation for a pain cry is apparent, he can be inspected all over and his temperature can be taken. On rare occasions a hair may be wrapped tightly around a finger or the penis.
for three or more weeks. It is thought to be due to a young infant becoming overwhelmed by sensory input such as sight, sound and movement. She then cries to block out all this input. Infants with colic may be calmed with white noise such as that from a white noise machine, a fan or even a vacuum cleaner. Being picked up and walked around or taken for a ride in a stroller or the car may also help. If everything has been tried and the colicky infant is still crying, it is fine to swaddle her, put her in her crib and walk away for a few minutes. This is better than accidentally harming her out of panic and frustration. Y
t Prolonged pain crying may start at a few weeks of age and last until at least three months of age – this is colic. Dr. Charles Ison is a University of Colic is defined as three Kentucky graduate who has practiced in his or more hours of crying for hometown of Lexington since 1993. He is a three or more days a week partner in Pediatric and Adolescent Associates.

see to it that the mother has yummy food and a clean house. Often in our culture, the extended family is unable to participate actively for as much time as the mother might need, so a postpartum doula is an excellent addition during this time of transition. Every breastfeeding mother needs expert lactation support. This can start with prenatal classes or one-on-one sessions with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Support can continue in the hospital with the lactation team. Outpatient support can include hospital clinics and groups like La Leche League. Private practice IBCLCs have extensive training in all areas of lactation support and offer home and office visits to assess mom and baby for feeding issues. Sometimes, this is answering questions and simply assuring the mother that she is doing well. This help
The Key to
Breastfeeding Success By Elizabeth Stapleton
Recent Royal births perpetuate the myth that new mothers can make a beautiful appearance just days after giving birth, wearing a white dress and heels, and glowing over their baby. The reality behind that image is an army of supporters preparing the Royal mom for the cameras. In fact, all new mothers need support as they venture into the new, unknown world of parenting. For those who are breastfeeding, a team working to help the mother reach her breastfeeding goals is especially important. Many people may join the new mom’s support team, but the team’s core is the new mom’s main helper – her partner, if she has one, or someone else. Ideally, this main helper will have attended breastfeeding classes with mom. These classes emphasize the importance of skin-to-skin contact with the baby who will room with the mom. They also advocate for frequent breastfeeding and lactation support. The next ring of support includes other family members. They should encourage the mother to hold and feed her baby, provide emotional support, and
can also include advice on positioning, care of sore nipples, latch and suck techniques, increasing supply, and providing support if breastfeeding isn’t going as easily as hoped. The IBCLC may suggest additions to the team to support breastfeeding. The OB or midwife can partner in solving low supply issues. Massage or chiropractic care can help reduce tension patterns in baby and mom, allowing for better sucking patterns and more comfortable nursing. Dentists, ENTs, and Speech Therapists diagnose and treat tethered oral tissues and impaired sucking patterns. Post-partum depression and anxiety are a real part of many mothers’ journeys. For these mothers, discussions with her care provider as well as a mental health professional can assist the transition into motherhood. Although most new mothers don’t need designer dresses and professional grade makeup, they do need a physical and emotional support team to allow them to recover from birth and grow into their new job of being a mother. Starting the teambuilding and education during pregnancy initiates the process. Inviting new members onto the team allows for support for success. Elizabeth Stapleton, RN, IBCLC, has been working with breastfeeding families for 20 years. Y Info: www.lactationcarewithelizabeth.com

Langston Sprints Into The Record Book
M
Hilary Chappell
PHOTOGR APHY
Langston Jackson SCHOOL: Henry Clay High GRADE: 12 SPORT: Track & Field & Football ACADEMICS: Langston has a 4.2 weighted GPA, has taken four A.P. classes and is Academic AllState in football and track. PARENTS: Carla Mack & James Jackson Jr.
eet the fastest high school sprinter in Kentucky, an 18-year-old with his sights set on becoming the all-time state record holder in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Langston Jackson, a senior at Henry Clay High, already has enjoyed an illustrious career for the Blue Devils with one major event left on his to-do list: the 2019 state meet set for June 1 at UK. The site is a good omen for Langston – he has accepted a full scholarship to run for the Wildcats next season. Langston already has the fastest time this year in the 100 at 10.33, which would break the state record of 10.42, except that the record must be set in the state meet. In the 200, Langston has run 21.01, which is just off the 20.94 record. Based on past performance, he seems a lock to break both records. In fact, he guaranteed it during a recent interview, saying, “I want to beat every record I possibly can and make it so low that nobody can beat it.” Along with regular training, Langston works with a Pilates instructor once a week, a practice he adopted after knee surgery as a sophomore. A national Pilates magazine even wrote a story about him. All of that has worked because Langston’s performance in the state meet has been exceptional.
Scholar Athlete Scholarship: $3,000 Two Scholar Athletes a year will be picked at random to share the $3,000 Darrell B. Pulliam Memorial Scholarship provided by Mike Pulliam, a Rector Hayden Realtor and instructor at Man O’ War Golf. Other contributors are Barry and Mike Barrett of Auto Excel, local accountant Kenny Frank, Bethany Smith of Smith CPA & Associates PLLC, Howard Smith of Smith Garage Equipment, and Dairy Queen franchise owner Paul Wright. 34 | www.lexingtonfamily.com
As a freshman, he helped lead Henry Clay to the state title, placing third in the 100 and 200, and running the anchor leg on the state champion 4x100 and 4x200 relays. As a sophomore, he placed second in the 100, fourth in the 200 and anchored the state champion 4x100 relay despite recovering from a knee injury suffered during football season. He was the team’s top rusher and defensive back last season, and he’s so fast he blocked four PAT kicks. At last year’s state meet, Langston was a four-time champion, winning the 100, 200 and anchoring both relays. After the state meet, as one of the top eight sprinters in the country, he heads to an invitational meet in Seattle, then it’s on to UK where he will major in premed in pursuit of a career in dentistry. Langston has a 4.2 weighted GPA, has taken four A.P. classes and was Academic All-State in both football and track. He has served as a mentor for underclassmen at Henry Clay and Kindergartners at Breckinridge Elementary. He is president of the youth group at his church and was voted Prom King. “We’re proud of his academics and we get compliments all the time on what a nice kid he is,” said his mother Carla. Added his father James: “He’s very respectful and treats everybody well. He’s a team player. It’s always we, not me.” Y
