Recommendations From 4 Teachers Who: Janette Moloney Fifth Grade Teacher, The Lexington School, 39 years experience What: Naturalization Ceremony Where: Federal Court House, downtown Lexington

This field trip complements Moloney’s lessons on immigration. Over the years, she has worked with Judge Greg Van Tatenhove, a former TLS parent, to personalize the experience for her students. Along with witnessing the ceremony, the students sing the national anthem and lead the new citizens in the pledge of allegiance. Next year, students will close the ceremony with the singing of “America the Beautiful.” “Our kids see the excitement in the eyes of the new citizens when they take the oath,” Moloney said. “These people are glad to be Americans.” Afterward, students make a chart of all the countries represented at the ceremony, and they discuss why people choose to be Americans. “It’s a powerful thing to choose a new country over your homeland,” Moloney said. “With this field trip, our students experience what that means.” 12

Who: Kelly Burris Third Grade, Liberty Elementary, 9 years experience What: Hummel Planetarium Where: Eastern Kentucky University

Burris prepares her third-graders for the field trip by assigning a planet to all students, who then research the planet and write a feature article about it. “They get excited when they see their planet at the planetarium,” she said. The field trip revolves around a 10:45 a.m. showtime of a movie about the solar system and constellations, which routinely elicits oohs and aahs from the students. “The kids are going into space and they love that,” she said. “The kids let out screams when the movie hurtles them though space. The kids are in awe.” Afterward, students visit the gift shop and bring their sack lunches to the picnic area. “We’ll go back there again because the students think it’s really cool,” she said. “I hear my students say things like, ‘I’ve never seen something like that before.’” Field Trip & Activity Guide 2015-2016

Who: Amy Richardson Lower Elementary Teacher, Providence Montessori, 20 years experience What: Great American Dollhouse Museum and Miniatures Store Where: Danville

A Dollhouse field trip for a coed class? Sounds like the boys would be against it. But the miniatures win them over every year they go, Richardson said. Scores of dollhouses decorated to trace American history from colonial times to modern day form an interconnected set of exhibits at the museum. The miniatures include historically dressed citizens in an early 20th century American town. Students are fascinated by the miniatures and then make their own “room boxes,” using objects such as fabric, golf tees, spools and more. Students are fully engaged for nearly 90 minutes creating their own miniature environment. Lori Kagen-Moore, the curator, chooses her words carefully as she introduces the project so as not to sway the children into any prescribed direction. “The students are free to create. And create they do!” Richardson said. “We make this trip every three years. We have lunch on the grounds and make a full day of it.” 14

Who: Elisa Wain First Grade, Tates Creek Elementary, 14 years experience What: Newport Aquarium Where: Newport

For students at a Title I school like Tates Creek, nearly everything about this field trip was out of the ordinary, from the exotic marine animals to the chartered bus to the sight of the Cincinnati skyline. Many of these students had never even seen a horse before so the trip through the rolling countryside was eye-opening. Then came views of the Ohio River, the Reds baseball stadium and the skyline. “For them it was like bringing someone else to the Great Wall of China,” Wain said. “This was their first significant trip. From the moment they got on the bus, it was such an adventure for them.” Complementing classwork on marine life, the Aquarium offered first looks at an octopus and a tankful of sharks swimming freely underfoot on the Shark Bridge. “This is everything a field trip is supposed to be,” Wain said. “It enriches the students, expands their vocabulary and they can make connections that stick with them.”

The of

Field Trips School Experiences Helped Student Appreciate the Arts

S

ome of my fondest memories of grade school have revolved around one thing: field trips. The freedom to leave the school. Get out in the same world where your parents work and what you see on TV. The freedom to explore what interests you. Even as a senior in high school, I get excited when I hear the words “Field Trip” flow out of my teacher’s mouth. When I travel around Lexington, I’m often reminded of the fun, inspirational and, most importantly, educational trips I’ve taken over the years. For me, field trips have been about more than just getting out of the classroom. They have helped me realize what interested me. Whether I knew it at the time or not, each trip I took created lasting memories that offered a fresh approach on what I was learning in the classroom. As the late journalist Norman Cousins stated: “The purpose of education is to enable us to develop to the fullest that which is inside us.” And field trips accomplish that purpose perfectly. I still remember going to the Lexington Children’s Theatre in elementary school to see works of literature that I had read in class come to life. I remember traveling all the way to Florida 16

By: John Fiske with my middle school band program to record in the Disney Recording Studio. I remember visiting the Opera House in high school to see a production of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” done in a foreign language. As a strong advocate for the arts, I recommend field trips like these, which not only engage students in a new, exciting way, but connect what they learn in class to the real world – which they will soon enter. As a high school senior ready to graduate and move on to college, I can thank the countless field trips I took around Lexington for my involvement in my school’s drama department, and the two-week music tour I participated in last summer with the University of Louisville. It may seem like field trips are just an escape from the harsh realities of a stifling classroom while the spring sun beckons happily, but they help shape the minds of students and create eager learners.

John Fiske graduated from Dunbar High this year and will attend the University of Louisville in the fall. He served two internships with Lexington Family Magazine through Fayette County’s schools’ EBCE program Field Trip & Activity Guide 2015-2016
