Moms on the Internet: Stop the Shaming!
Publisher Dana Tackett

H
ave you ever posted something on the Internet and immediately regretted it? I don’t mean an embarrassing photo or an inappropriate comment. I’m talking about posting about your kids. I use social media, blogging and chat boards in my pursuit of perfect parenting. When my daughter was born, they seemed like a lifesaver. All these knowledgeable mothers, ready to chime in with advice whenever I needed it! Then came the shaming. It wasn’t obvious at first. Just a piece of “advice” phrased in a way that left me wincing. I began noticing how often this happened. A mom would ask for a formula recommendation and would instead get a lecture on breastfeeding. Someone would ask for opinions on a sleep-training book and be scoffed at for even considering the practice. I could be looking for advice on how to handle toddler tantrums and the responses would leave me feeling like I

was an absolute failure for not handling them better. Not all the responses are like this. There are many moms who think before they type and make sure their advice doesn’t become an attack. But I have definitely gotten to the point where I think twice before asking for help from an Internet group. Social media is such a double-edged sword for parenting. It can be a forum for frustration or an opportunity to make connections and form friendships. I’m lucky to have developed a thick skin by my third child. I have learned to ignore the “sanctimommies” when they come out to wag their fingers. But other women might take their harsh words to heart. We need to find ways to offer advice without resorting to shaming. None of us are doing this whole motherhood thing perfectly. A little kindness goes a long way with a mom who is just trying to do her best. Y

Each month we consult with experts – our readers! – about parenting and ask a question on our Facebook page. February’s Question was:
Does fear of “mom-shaming” ever keep you from posting on the Internet? t“Yes, in the past when I wasn’t able to breastfeed my baby I

How to Share Sad News With Children
T
he goldfish went belly-up while Heidi was at school. Chipper, the parakeet, flew out the front door when you left for errands this morning. Aaron’s good friend is moving far away. A parent or grandparent is seriously ill.
As much as we would like to shield our children from bad news – and wish to avoid it ourselves – life asks that we address difficult topics with honesty and empathy. The way parents handle the small losses, such as goldfish and hamsters, can be an opportunity for learning how to handle the more difficult situations that inevitably arise. Since pain is unpleasant, we often tend to rush in an attempt to “get it over” as quickly as possible, much as we might rip off a Band-Aid. Recognize that pain, while unpleasant, cannot be avoided. Acceptance of that fact allows us to better heal from the hurt and integrate the experience into our lives. We must make room for the news to sink in, and allow the space and time necessary to process the grief along with other feelings that arise as a result. Empathy and compassion – for ourselves and for our children – are invaluable. Here are some helpful do’s and don’ts: DO: t Create a safe space and time to share unpleasant news. t Be prepared for intense emotions such as fear, sadness or anger. t Keep your voice calm and steady, and offer your lap or your arms. t Be honest while appropriate to the age of your child. For example, “Grandpa is very sick.” t Empathize. Let your child know you 8 | www.lexingtonfamily.com
understand. t Allow for days, weeks, even months for him to talk about it. t Be positive where you sincerely can be. t Ask for ideas or suggest things to do to help the situation. Draw a picture. Make or buy a card. Bake something together. This empowers the child authentically so she doesn’t feel so helpless. DON’T: t Buy a new pet and hope the child won’t notice. Use every small opportunity to teach. t Tell a child there is no need to be sad or angry or scared. This invalidates her experience and she will feel worse. t Use vague terms like “Aunt Sophie has gone away” or “went to sleep.” They confuse and can frighten children who may become afraid of going to sleep in case they don’t wake up either. t Expect children to “get over it” quickly. The topic will likely come up frequently. Be patient. t Offer false hope. t Put your children in the position to feel as though they must take care of you. Reassure them that you can take care of your own feelings and that you will help them take care of theirs as well. he Lexington Children Theatre’s stage will be busy this month with two shows scheduled. “Elephant & Piggie’s ‘We Are in a Play!’” based on the popular book series by Mo Willems, finds the best friends in their very own musical. There will be singing, dancing and playfulness as these two team up with the singing Squirelles for a fun adventure that will have the audience singing and dancing to the beat. Showtimes are Saturday, March 3 at 2 & 7 p.m., and Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m. at LCT’s Main Stage at 418 W. Short St. This show is recommended for ages 4 & up and lasts one hour. Tickets are $16 for children and $19 for adults. The second March performance is “Afternoon of the Elves,” based on the book by Janet Taylor Lisle that explores friendship, imagination and empathy. Hillary could not figure out how the most unpopular girl in school had an elf village in her backyard. Sara Kate shows Hillary the elf village that has little houses, a well and even a Ferris wheel made from an old bicycle tire. This one-hour show is recommended for ages 8 & up. ‘FamU’ Helps Parents Build Student Success By: Emmanuel Caulk

n the Fayette County Public Schools, families are our partners in all that we do and we are committed to working collaboratively with you to ensure the success of every student. One of our many outreach efforts is an exciting program we call Family University: Guiding Families from Cradle to Career, or “FamU” for short. Family University is a series of Saturday learning opportunities we offer several times a year for parents and other caregivers to actively foster student success. The day is structured to provide classes, workshops and other events that familiarize people not only with the schools, but also with community resources. When we founded Family University a year ago, our goal was to provide another avenue to empower families to be more fully engaged in their children’s education, and to help them understand more about our schools and school district offerings. Since then, hundreds of families have participated. Each FamU event is unique,
but one thing each of them has in common is that there’s something for everyone! Sessions for Parents and Guardians Explore opportunities to support student learning at home. Topics can include School Readiness, Early Literacy Practices, Issues and Trends Affecting Youth, New Curriculum Programs in FCPS, Services for English Learners, College and Career Readiness, and more! Founded in 2003 to help diverse students understand how to navigate life after high school, LIFT also provides learning opportunities for families to be knowledgeable about the pathway toward college and career readiness. This year’s event will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 at Tates Creek High School. We will offer interactive sessions for students of all ages while parents and other caregivers can learn about the Every Student Succeeds Act, advocacy and financial aid. Preparing Kids for Air Travel
A
irplanes are one of the safest means by which to travel. The odds for any one person of being in an airplane accident are 1 in 11 million. Plus, 96% of these unlucky passengers survive. Air travel with children takes some preparation, but it is certainly doable. Reading books and talking about the process of going to the airport, going through security, boarding the plane, what happens on the flight, and disembarking the plane can make things run smoother and be less anxiety-producing. Letting children ask questions before, during and after the flight (no matter how strange) can reduce their fears. Getting to the airport early can help allow for the extra time to get through security checks. Children can wear easy-to-remove shoes and clothing to help with screening (less invasive now than screening for those 13 and older). Explaining the process – and reassuring

Doctor Drawn to Practice's Values
A
s her college graduation approached, Maria Kirkpatrick remained uncertain about how to put her biology degree to use in the healthcare field. She had shadowed all kinds of professionals – surgeons, pathologists, occupational therapists – and she had earned a license as a certified nurse assistant. Still searching, she returned home to Henderson, Ky., and visited her optometrist, Dr. Bobby Cottingham. “When I talked with him, something just clicked,” Kirkpatrick said. “He talked about building lifelong relationships with patients. Suddenly it made sense.” “The things that are most important to me are the relationships you have and the people you care about.” That connected with what she had heard from her older sister – Dr. Amy Kirkpatrick, an optometrist in Texas. “She said it was a great profession and a great career,” Maria said. So off to optometry school she went,

No Stats, Just Results For LexCath’s Top Scorer
A
Jay Ballard SCHOOL: Lexington Catholic High GRADE: 11 SPORT: Basketball ACADEMICS: Jay is a straight-A student, has taken five A.P. classes, scored 27 on the ACT and is a member of the school’s mathscience-technology program. PARENTS: Jennifer & Hubie
sk the best student on the Lexington Catholic High girls basketball team about her stats and you receive an uncommon answer from Jay Ballard: “I don’t know.” How many points do you average a game? “I don’t know,” she says shyly. The two-time team captain has also passed 1,000 points for her career. How many points do you have? Same answer: “I don’t know.” For the record, the 5-foot-8 junior point guard has led the team in scoring two years in a row and averages 17 points a game. Her high game is 38. She is on pace to finish this season with 1,200 points. But these are among the few things Jay doesn’t know. She’s a straight-A student in the school’s rigorous mathscience-technology program. From 200plus students in her class, she is one of only 15 in the program. Her class load consists of chemistry, biology, English and U.S. history – all A.P. classes – plus honors trigonometry, computer programming and religion. She scored 27 on the ACT and is a National Honor Society member. Jay also serves a mentorship with Dr. Lori Shook, a neonatologist at UK. Once a month, she shadows Dr. Shook, and the two devised an experiment to test whether aromatherapy would lower stress levels and improve sleep for nurses.
Scholar Athlete Scholarship: $3,000 Two Scholar Athletes a year will be picked at random to share the $3,000 Darrell B. Pulliam Memorial Scholarship provided by Mike Pulliam, a Rector Hayden Realtor and instructor at Man O’ War Golf. Other contributors are Howard Smith of Smith Garage Equipment, Barry and Mike Barrett of Auto Excel, local accountant Kenny Frank and Dairy Queen franchise owner Paul Wright. 34 | www.lexingtonfamily.com
(The preliminary results say yes.) “It’s a great experience just to be in that environment,” Jay said. “My favorite part is to see the babies and how small some of them are. It’s amazing how much of a chance they’ve been given to survive by the work of the doctors.” Jay is among the rarest of students – a reverse procrastinator. “Any project she gets at school she does immediately,” said her mother Jennifer. “When she comes home from school on Friday, she does all her weekend homework right away. She’s a hard worker.” That goes for the basketball court, too. Said her coach, Scott True: “She puts in more time outside of practice working on her skills than any player I have coached in 17 years.” For a teenager, Jay is extra polite. Yes sir and yes ma’am are staples of her vocabulary. But on the court, you better get out of her way. “She is the sweetest, kindest person I know,” her mother said. “Basketball brings out her competitiveness. Instead of shy, she is now outgoing.” Jay’s goal is to study medicine and play Division I basketball. That’s a tall order but if anyone can do it, Jay is your go-to guy, so to speak. Said Coach True: “Jay is a great example of what a student athlete should be both on and off the court.” Y
