At 67, I Still Enjoy Being A Dad to My Son

I

n the movie, “Parenthood,” an elderly Jason Robards asks his sensible son (Steve Martin) for advice about his gambling addicted son (Tom Hulce). First, Robards admits that he was a lousy father and that he hated the worry and anguish that came with parenthood. Now, Robards is engulfed in worry again – if he doesn’t pay off gamblers they might kill Hulce. Again, Robard rails against the pain of parenthood. “The worry, the pain. That’s not for me,” he tells Martin’s character. “And it’s not like that all ends when you’re 18 or 41 or 61 or 81. It never, ever ends. “There is no end zone. You never cross the goal line, spike the ball and do your touchdown dance. “I’m 64 and Larry (Hulce) is 27. He’s still my son.” It’s a grim but touching scene, watching a man who rejected the obligations of fatherhood now admitting that he has lost the fight. Despite his best efforts, Robards still

cares for his children... and that feeling will follow him to the grave. I’ve always enjoyed that scene and viewed it as the flip side to my experience as a father. Robards is right... parenting never ends. But that’s good news. I’m 67 and my son is 25. And there’s still nobody (other than my wife Dana) that I would rather spend time with. Jack lives in town and I see him regularly. We play golf together once a week, he visits for a meal or two on the weekends when we play guitar together, and we speak on the phone a few times a week. Robards is right. Parenthood doesn’t end – and I’m grateful for that. Do I still worry about Jack, and fret about his future? Sure. That comes with the territory. But my touchdown dance is spending time with him. Thankfully, parenting is an adventure that fuels me every day... even at my age. Y

or the first time since its inception nearly two decades ago, Lexington Family Magazine’s Elder Care Tour will take place in the spring – and on a Saturday. The Elder Care Tour, the 17th annual, has a new date – Saturday, May 13, 1:30-5 p.m. Previously, the Tour was held on Sundays in November. “We wanted to give people a chance to take the Tour when the weather is more pleasant,” Editor John Lynch said. As part of the Tour, the magazine is giving away one Gaylord Opryland Summer Getaway Package. The prize includes two nights accommodations for two people, and breakfast each morning. To enter to win, merely visit one of the retirement communities that will have an open house for the Tour on Saturday, May 13, 1:30-5 p.m. The Tour not only provides a chance to win this exciting prize, it’s also an opportunity to educate yourself about housing options for older adults in 17th Annual Elder Care Tour Central Kentucky Sat. May 13, 1:30-5 p.m. in a relaxed, Info: 223-1765 unpressured atmosphere. The Tour is designed for older adults, their adult children and other caregivers. All too often, older adults and Sandwich Generation folks find themselves forced by crisis to make immediate decisions about their own care, the care of a spouse or the care of an aging parent. What if you knew ahead of time what facilities and services were available for yourself or your loved ones? What if you knew where you’d like to retire or where you could go for rehabilitation services? The Tour can provide those answers. Mark your calendar and plan to visit one or more retirement communities on Saturday, May, 13, 1:30-5 p.m. For a map of participating retirement communities, directions and descriptions of each, please turn to Pages 32 and 34. T

he 15th Annual Summer Camps & Activities Fair was a beautiful day of sunshine and free family fun for kids and parents. Around 3,000 people came through the doors of Lexington Christian Academy to visit booths by summer camps, after school programs, enrichment classes, health care professionals and more. Activities this year included a Spin-Tron, a ninja obstacle course, photo booths, face painting, arts & crafts, inflatables, a giant slide and more for the kids while parents gathered info from vendors. Live performances occurred throughout the day, including martial arts demonstrations by the YMCA of Central Kentucky and Dr. Kim’s Tae Kwon Do; musical numbers by the UK Academy for Creative Excellence; dance and cheer routines by Legacy All Sports; and a fashion show by Images Model & Talent Agency. SVM Portraits photographed hundreds of children for the annual Cover Model Contest. Look for the winners in the June issue of Lexington Family Magazine. Writing Contest Winners Announced L exington Family Magazine’s 13th annual Writing Contest saw fierce competition between several elementary schools vying for the $500 cash prize. In the end, Booker T. Washington Elementary had 89% participation from its student body, passing Paint Lick Elementary by a handful of entries. The Lexington Public Library, the magazine’s Writing Contest partner, hosted a series of Write-a-Thon events over the course of the contest where children could attend and receive feedback on their essays. More than 1,070 children entered the contest, representing more than 40 schools across Central Kentucky. Children were asked to craft a creative essay based on the prompt “If I Had a Billion Dollars…” Judges from the magazine and Library read plenty of wish lists for designer

sneakers, luxury cars and toys. Many students revealed their philanthropic aspirations and described the charity work they could do with the money. The ways the students imagined acquiring the money ranged from winning the lottery to robbing a bank. Essays were judged in three categories: Grades K & 1, Grades 2 & 3 and Grades 4 & 5. Prizes were awarded to both boys and girls. Winners received prizes from American Girl, BreyerFest, LEGO, Pulse Performance Products, Disney Hyperion Books and the YMCA of Central Kentucky. Entries were judged on creativity, quality of writing and how well they fit the theme. Look for all the details on next year’s contest starting in January. Essays will be due at the end of March 2018. Y

J’s PLACE

By Susan Szczerbicki

LOCATION: 101 S. Main St., Nicholasville J’s Place is a coffee shop and cafe that has Toddler Time each Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The events vary each week but usually include a craft, a story or a movie and even have costumed characters visit. My son liked doing the craft, playing with the small toys and watching the movie. He also loved watching the buses and traffic from their large windows. And you can always grab a snack or coffee while your kid is participating in the activities. J’s Place also has children’s events Saturdays at 11 a.m. that often include costumed characters and crafts. J’s Place is an ideal spot to have your kids play and be entertained while you enjoy a cup of coffee. More of Susan’s reviews can be found at www.adventuresinmotherhoodbluegrass.com Y

A

ny mother can relate to “Mama’s Kisses,” a playful tale of mischievous babies trying to avoid bedtime. In this book, written by Kate McMullan, the animal moms search for their babies in the jungle and send them off to sleep. The illustrations are calming and the dialogue rhythmic, sending the perfect cues that bedtime has arrived. Mom and children will love to cuddle up and read this book, and share their own good night kiss before little eyes close. “If I Were a Kangaroo” by Mylisa Larsen is a sweet take on a “what if” book and imagines mom and baby together as all different types of creatures. The illustrations feature various animals all snuggled up preparing for bedtime. Fans of “The Runaway Bunny” or “I Love You, Stinky Face” will adore “If I Were a Kangaroo.” The “Sleepy Animal” notes at the end are a lovely touch for older children who enjoy learning about wildlife. There are fun facts about how different animals sleep, from gorillas to sea otters to kangaroos and more. Lexington Family Magazine has a copy of each book to give away on our Facebook page. Y

Library Reading Program

‘Discover Summer’ & Win Prizes

G

et out your flip-flops, it’s time to head to the library. What?! Reading by the pool, at the beach or in the shade is a summer essential, and Discover Summer – the Lexington Public Library’s reimagined summer reading program – has found the sweet spot where learning and having fun meet. “I can hardly wait for summer to start,” Ann Hammond, the library’s executive director, said. “The whole community seems to have rallied around our children to make Discover Summer a success this year, starting with our sponsor for the second year, PNC Bank, and continuing with a host of organizations and agencies who are giving Discover Summer a boost with events and support.” Those organizations and agencies include: t PNC Bank, which provides grant funding to make Discover Summer possible, including prize books given to all finishers. t Alltech, which will show how to make a variety of soda flavors using yeast fermentation, combining food, fun and science. t The Arboretum, site of story walks that take families through the pages of a picture book. t Fayette County Public Schools, which will provide Countdown to Kindergarten T-shirts at all kickoff

parties, giving incoming kindergartners access to educational activities around town throughout the summer. t Lexington Family Magazine will give away free books over the summer. Parents can snap a photo of their child reading and upload to social media using the hashtag #LexFamReads to enter to win all summer long. t Lexington Parks & Recreation, which will give a free one-time pool pass to every youth who completes 30 activities in Discover Summer’s Summer Activity Challenge. t Lextran, which will allow students to use their Student Success Cards – public library cards given to students in the Fayette County Public Schools – to ride the bus free during the entire summer break. t Malibu Jack’s will donate one free pass for each of the library’s six branches. Finishers can enter into prize drawings for passes to Mailbu Jack’s or other exciting destinations. t Phoenix Forward, a joint project of the library, Parks & Recreation and the Downtown Development Authority and funded by the Knight Foundation that will provide a wide variety of games, music and other fun activities from 4 to 8 p.m. four evenings per week and from 10 a.m. to noon every Saturday at Phoenix Park during Discover Summer. t Reach Out & Read, a nonprofit

The Official Trophy Sponsor of the

Asbury University Educator of the Month

organization that will give away new books and conduct school-readiness activities at the library’s Discover Summer kickoff parties.

Discover Summer encourages youth (and adults) to keep track of their reading during June and July, but it also challenges participants to learn about animals, discover where math and art converge, move to the sounds of Grammy Award-nominated performer Zak Morgan, create their own cartoons and much more. The Lexington Public Library has for decades held summer reading programs to help students keep up, and even improve, their reading skills over the long summer break. But new community partners have helped transform this library mainstay into a citywide educational effort. Discover Summer will kick off with parties and petting zoos at all six locations of the Lexington Public Library between June 1 and 5. The library will mark the halfway point with parties and Snowie Shaved Ice at all locations between July 6 and 8. Each week to the end of July will include different activities. For a complete schedule, visit lexpublib. org or pick up a calendar at any library location. Y

Splash Into Pool Season Here’s What a Healthy Family Looks Like

I

f you want what is best for your family, you probably won’t aspire to be just “normal” or “average.” But families that make deliberate, conscious choices in line with their values tend to be healthier and to function more consciously and effectively. To all the world, they look normal and average. Actually, they are exceptional. So what do healthy families have in common? 1) Every member, from youngest to oldest, feels respected. 2) When mistakes are made, they look for learning opportunities and ways to make things right rather than blame or shame. 3) Family members feel heard and understood. Listening is valued. This starts with the adults. 4) They try to meet everyone’s needs. When needs are in conflict, members look for a solution that serves everyone rather than focusing on “winning.” 5) They work together with a common goal on jobs, projects and building their community because they value working together as a team. 6) No matter what happens, everyone knows they are uniquely loved and valued. How can you help boost your Healthy Family Quotient? Here are a few ideas: t Do something every day that lifts you up. On a regular basis, charge your batteries so that you can keep on going. Children count on having parents who take care of themselves and get enough sleep. t Make time every morning, evening and after any time apart to re-connect. “It’s so good to see you!” “You look marvelous!” “Tell me the best thing that

14 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

happened today!” When your child is connected to you, everything goes better. t When it comes to discipline, take punishment off the table. Implement positive guidance and watch your children blossom. Neuroscience supports this more effective approach to raising responsible, confident and resilient children. t Have regular family meetings where you enjoy one another, make plans for work and play, and share a game, story or a healthy snack. You don’t have to make it a big deal… just do it! t Learn! Resources for parents are more available than ever. Check out books such as “The Whole Brain Child” and “No Drama Discipline” by Daniel Siegel. Laura Markham’s “Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids” is also an excellent resource for parents. Start a book club and learn together, and attend workshops and classes in your community. Here’s to your healthy family! Heartbeat 1-Year-Old Is Clueless About Mom’s Pregnancy

I

PA R E NTI NG Q U E STIO N S -----------------------------------------Each month we consult with experts – our readers! – about parenting and ask a question on our Facebook page. April’s Question was:

What is your most memorable Mother’s Day gift? Katie Saltz with CeCe & Ezra

vividly remember the joy on my daughter’s face when we told her we were pregnant with her brother. She was 4 years old and had been wanting a baby sibling...

for a long time. Her excitement was palpable. Fast forward to her sixth birthday, when we told her we were once again going to bring a new baby into the family. She squealed with delight and gave my tiny baby bump huge hugs. Her brother, on the other hand, sat where he was and continued to pick his nose. Ezra is only a year old. He will be almost 21 months when this new baby arrives. When people ask me how my kids feel about the baby news, I answer that CeCe is excited and Ezra is clueless. This throws some people for a loop. They assumed that he and CeCe would both be thrilled. CeCe certainly is over-themoon at the idea of having a sister. Ezra has absolutely no awareness of this unborn baby. And why would he? As far as he knows, Mommy is just getting squishier and rounder. I didn’t expect him to comprehend that a baby is inside of my body, and one day it will suddenly be living beside

16 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

him in our home. I realize how spoiled I was by CeCe’s over-the-top reactions to my pregnancies. She likes to rub my bump, talk and sing to the baby, and she takes pride in helping me prepare the nursery. Ezra likes to put race cars on top of my belly and watch them roll down. In trying to explain the baby to him, we actually caused confusion. We pointed to my belly so much when talking about the baby that he now thinks “baby” is the correct term for stomach. It’s pretty adorable to watch him poke his own belly button and call it a “baby.” But it didn’t exactly help with the explanation. I’ve read plenty of advice on how to prepare siblings for a new baby. But I am skeptical that a 1-year-old can comprehend any part of this process. For now, I’ll enjoy my 6-year-old’s involvement in my gestation period and not push too much baby talk on my toddler. Y

Curious Edge

Let Curious Edge Be a Game Changer By Kimberly Hudson

H Scholarships Avaliable!

Proud Members of:

as this school year been difficult? Why not use the summer to get your child prepared for the next school year? A mom stopped by my office yesterday to share a story about her daughter. Eightyear-old “Katherine” repeated kindergarten for social maturity and is currently finishing the second grade. Katherine has ongoing struggles in Kimberly Hudson school, reading below grade level and struggling with weekly spelling words. She has received “reading intervention” for three years at her school. Unfortunately, Katherine’s mom did not see improvement. Feeling concerned, she turned to her pediatrician and was referred to a rehabilitation practice. Katherine was evaluated by a psychologist and diagnosed with ADHD and a Specific Learning Disability. Again, she was placed in a “reading intervention” program without any significant changes. Katherine’s mom turned to The Curious Edge just before Christmas. We completed a short assessment that identified the source of Katherine’s ongoing struggles. We found the key that had been missing and simply started giving her the tools she had been lacking. Katherine started to experience success in school and loved what that felt like! Our clinicians cultivated pathways, started connecting dots and prepared the brain to operate like the magnificent computer that it is. Katherine became more intentional in her academics and communication skills, and her confidence soared. For three years, Katherine’s teachers – with the best of intentions – had tried their best to help her. Unfortunately, they lacked the medical training we have at The Curious Edge. We also have the experience of treating adults who had become neurologically impaired from stroke or head injury. Before Katherine could work on foundational academic skills such as reading, spelling, writing and math, she first needed to have someone connect the dots that were preventing her brain from doing what it needed to allow her to succeed in school. I’m so thankful we were able to help Katherine taste success. This has given her the confidence to show everyone her unique gifts and talents. Moms, don’t delay! Let this summer be a game changer for your struggling student. Info: (859) 899-3343 (EDGE) or http://thecuriousedge.com. Y

Preventing Age-Related Low Vision

U

nfortunately, for many Americans (one in three over the age of 70), growing older is linked to macular degeneration – vision loss caused by the deterioration of the macula in the retina. Blood vessels that feed the macula either constrict or leak, interfering with blood flow. The result is loss of central vision. But this isn’t blindness. Peripheral vision is still intact, so an older person with this condition might appear to be looking at your ear when addressing you. This condition can lead to legal blindness... and loss of driving privileges. Sufferers also can no longer distinguish letters and numbers, forcing them to find adaptations in order to read. Simply using a magnifying glass often does the trick. Others use tiny (thumbnail size) telescopes to read signs when out and about.

It also includes two memory care neighborhoods. For a reasonable monthly fee, assisted living residents enjoy Liberty Care – help with activities of daily living such as bathing and dressing for no extra charge. Also included are utilities such as phone and cable TV, three daily restaurant-style meals, weekly housekeeping, daily trash removal and free use of the laundry. The full-time activities director keeps residents engaged with a social life that features games, physical

exercise, entertainment and off-campus trips. Liberty Ridge official Bruce Maples describes memory care as quaint neighborhoods consisting of nine residents with a staff ratio of 3-to-1. The neighborhoods provide a secure environment, and staff follow the Best Friends compassionate care approach. Residents are kept active and cognitively stimulated throughout the day. “The most important thing about Liberty Ridge,” Maples said, “is that we have a caring tradition for 17 plus years, and that we are more than just a home. We are a family.” Liberty Ridge is locally owned and the Board of Directors consists of volunteers. Said Maples: “We are not corporate America.” Y

Why Infants Are Prone to Earaches

O

titis media is the medical term for an infection of the middle ear. The condition, usually caused by bacteria, is extremely common in infants and young children, but it can occur at any age. There are reasons that infants are more prone to it, though. The middle ear is a pair of air-filled structures (on either side of the head) with three bones in each one that take up a lot of the space. The outer wall consists of the eardrum (tympanic membrane), which looks like a piece of plastic wrap: it is what we see when we look in the ear canal with an otoscope. Sound waves that enter the external ear canal make the eardrum vibrate. The bones in the middle ear transfer the vibrations to the inner ear, where they are processed. The three bones of the middle ear are washed by a fluid that the middle ear makes.

This fluid drains out of the middle ear by otitis media because their Eustachian tubes a passageway called the Eustachian tube, are shorter, floppier and more horizontal. which empties into the back of the nasal Infants’ immune systems are not as strong passages (one on each side). against certain bacteria, and they catch a Anything that blocks the Eustachian lot more viruses (especially if in daycare). tubes and prevents the fluid from draining Symptoms of otitis media include out of the middle ear can potentially cause irritability, pulling on ears, sometimes a otitis media. It All Adds Up: 11 A.P. Classes, 2 State Titles

W

Ethan Tan SCHOOL: Dunbar High GRADE: 12 SPORTS: Track, crosscountry, swimming, ACADEMICS: Ethan has a 4.7419 weighted GPA in the math-science program and has taken 11 A.P. classes. PARENTS: May & Vincent

hat’s the definition of a Scholar-Athlete? Look no further than the resume of Dunbar High senior Ethan Tan. Consider: t 4.7419 weighted GPA in Dunbar’s prestigious Math-Science program t 33 on the ACT t 11 A.P. classes t 11 A.P. classes!! That’s a record in 20 years of Scholar Athlete stories. t A.P. Scholar with Distinction Award for scoring at least 3.5 on all A.P. tests. t National Honor Society member t Piano player (rock and pop) t Tutor of middle and high school students t Researcher at UK. Every other day he works in the lab, studying the protein AFP as a way to better diagnose liver cancer. In sports, Ethan is a three-sport varsity athlete (track, swimming and cross-country). Because the academic demands are so stiff in the math-science program, it’s unusual to find students who play even one varsity sport. Ethan does more than play. He’s a two-time state champion on Dunbar’s 4x400 relay team. The 4x800 relay team has placed second and third in the state the past two years. The team is one of the favorites to win the State title this year. In swimming, he has advanced to the Regional meet three years in a row,

Scholar Athlete Scholarship: $3,000 Two Scholar Athletes a year will be picked at random to share the $3,000 Darrell B. Pulliam Memorial Scholarship provided by Mike Pulliam, a Rector Hayden Realtor and instructor at Man O’ War Golf. Other contributors are Howard Smith of Smith Garage Equipment, Barry and Mike Barrett of Auto Excel, local accountant Kenny Frank, Dairy Queen franchise owner Paul Wright and PBI Bank. 50 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

three times in the 100 breaststroke and once in the 200 IM. As a sophomore, Ethan added cross-country as a way to improve his running… by running. All three of his sports demand hours of conditioning – at least four miles a day, every day as a runner, and yards and yards of swimming during that season. That means staying up into the wee hours after grueling track and swim practices to complete homework in calculus, physics, engineering, computer science and the like. What’s the appeal of all that work? “I like challenging myself,” Ethan said. “When I was a junior taking four A.P. classes, my counselor told me I didn’t need that many. Sometimes, I didn’t get enough sleep but it was quite an experience.” His motivation in sports is simplicity itself – self-improvement. “It’s all about dropping your time, plus I love passing people on the track,” he said. His perseverance as an athlete impressed his parents. “He really surprised me,” his father Vincent said. “Not a single day did he say, ‘I’m too tired’ or ‘It’s too painful.’ I was very proud to see how hard he ran.” Ethan’s career ends this spring – he will focus on his studies at Purdue or UK – but he’ll continue to train. That’s just what Scholar Athletes do. Y
