Twenty Years of Gratitude

W

hen my wife and I founded Lexington Family Magazine 20 years ago, we had no idea how much our new business would teach us about parenting. We became parents five years after we met and fell in love in California. Jack was born in 1992, and from that moment forward our days on the West Coast were numbered. Dana comes from a large extended family based in Central Kentucky. So five years after we welcomed Jack into the world, we moved to Lexington and launched our magazine, in October 1997. The magazine matched our new focus in life, parenting. Plus, we were ideal firsttime business owners because we didn’t know what we were doing. Ignorance fortified us, and we persevered – thanks to a whole lot of help from our friends. We heeded feedback from community members, added staff and were welcomed by our readers and advertising partners.

As we scrambled from that wobbly start to keep our fledgling enterprise aloft, we learned about parenting right along with our readers. In sharing information with our readers about everything from toilet training to educational philosophies, from youth sports options to elder care housing choices, we were educating ourselves too. That’s the great gift we received from LFM for the past two decades – we became better informed parents. Dana and I are forever grateful that the magazine has supported our family for 20 years and gave us the flexibility to be hands-on, present parents in Jack’s life. We are also thankful for all that the magazine has taught us about raising kids in Central Kentucky. That’s a gift that keeps on giving for us. Thanks to all who have helped us along the way. It’s been a great ride. For more about 20 years at LFM, please see Page 10. Y

Each month we consult with experts – our readers! – about parenting and ask a question on our Facebook page. September’s Question was:

Do you think children should open gifts at their birthday party, or can they wait until they get home?? t “If you’re having a party at some sort of venue… there’s

usually not enough time to open presents... If you don’t open presents at the party, you should make sure to thank the gift giver in some way, by phone or a thank you note.” – Dana Hatcher Bix t “My girls love opening and seeing gifts opened at parties. They

get disappointed if they don’t get to see their gift opened.” – Kristi Stefanini Peshke t “When we have held parties at Monkey Joe’s or Kids’ Place,

the kids are usually too excited to resume playing than watch the birthday girl/boy open gifts. So we usually take the gifts home and send thank you notes.” – Kristy Kubasak Tucker October Feedback Question:

SOS: How to Help Stressed Out Students

A

typical day for a student: 7 hours: School, school, and more school. 3 hours: Practices, games, and other after-school responsibilities. 2 hours: Dinner (Cane’s and Chickfil-A are making bank from our kids). Down time (if they are lucky), and catching up on their social media (it’s here to stay). 2 hours: Homework, homework, and more homework.

Burning the proverbial candle at both ends affects a student’s health and wellbeing, leading to stress, anxiety, and a compromised ability to achieve at the highest level. At the same time, not getting good grades, or the best test scores, or the prized spot on the select team leads to a perceived fear of ruining any chance of future success. The result: Stressed Out Students. What Parents Can Do t Less may be more. Ask your kids what they need most from you. Stressed Out Students typically feel overwhelmed and pressured by parent involvement. Asking them what you can do to best show support invites a conversation rather than a battle. t Foster a relationship with your child that goes beyond grades. Refrain from asking them how they did on their test as soon as you see them. Even more, when they tell you their grade, ask what they did well, rather than what they missed. Move the conversation away from grades. Instead ask what they did in their favorite class, what challenged them, what piqued their interest. Perhaps ask what they have planned for the night, or what they would like for dinner or current events. t Talk about your day. Our lives are interesting too. We have friends, careers, hobbies, and goals. 8 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

Sometimes students need an escape from their day rather than rehashing it. t Allow your children to “act their age.” Kids of all ages need playtime, downtime, family time. However, the balance is off, making tutoring sessions, late night games, and studying the priority, all of which take a toll on your child’s wellness. t Avoid getting caught up in the hype of what it takes to get into a “good” college or believing your child has to go to a top 25 school to be successful. The truth is most Stressed Out Students are beyond qualified for any college they apply to, and they will more than likely be successful no matter where they go. Taking one more A.P. course, or doing more community service hours, or having the perfect test score doesn’t guarantee anything but fueling more SOS. Excellence Rules at Fayette County Public Schools From Perfect ACT Scores to College Scholarships, FCPS Students Enjoy Success By Emmanuel Caulk, Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent.

A

cross the United States, only one tenth of one percent of 2017 high school graduates scored a perfect 36 on the ACT. Here in Fayette County Public Schools, 8 of the 2,585 members of the Class of 2017 earned a perfect score – roughly 2.5 times the national rate! Collectively, the 2017 senior class earned $90.8 million in scholarship offers and students were accepted to 415 colleges and universities in six countries across four continents, including all 10 of America’s best colleges as rated by U.S. News and World Report, such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton and MIT. Not only does Fayette County offer high-quality neighborhood schools, we also provide top-notch programs that give all students a chance to discover their individual talents. Magnet, gifted and talented and specialty programs are open to

students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Offerings include pre-engineering, creative and performing arts, information technology and an all-boys college prep academy. In our Spanish Immersion Program, students spend half a day learning in English and the other half in Spanish. In the Math, Science and Technology Center, students conduct graduate level research under the direction of professors at the University of Kentucky. FCPS is poised to become one of the few school districts in the nation to have a K-12 International Baccalaureate campus. And in 2018, the new Biomedical Sciences Program at Frederick Douglass High will be part of the nationally-recognized Project Lead the Way program. Whether your child wants to be an ambassador or an artist, a scientist or a singer, an engineer or an entrepreneur, we have advanced programs that will help them achieve their dreams. Consider this: t About a third of the seniors from SCAPA

at Lafayette participated in the Governor’s School for the Arts. Three did both GSA and the Governor’s Scholar Program! t The graduates from the Liberal Arts Academy at Henry Clay completed an average of 12 A.P. courses each, which yielded 15 national A.P. Scholars and 22 A.P. Scholars with Distinction. t 100% of the 33 members of the Spanish Immersion Program Class of 2017 at Bryan Station earned the FCPS Seal of Biliteracy and passed the A.P. Spanish Language and Culture Exam. t The graduates of the Math, Science and Technology Center at Paul Laurence Dunbar included 16 National Merit Finalists, 7 Presidential Scholar Candidates and 2 International Science and Engineering Fair Participants. t All of the International Baccalaureate candidates from Tates Creek earned scholarships, and more than a third of those were full-tuition or full-ride awards. Apply now to be a part of the excellence in FCPS! Y

Curious Edge

Helping Your Child Make Significant Gains on the ACT

I

By Kimberly Hudson

f your student’s ACT scores did not come back as high as you were hoping, I have the solution! While many companies promote their curriculum, I stick to the actual ACT test and the brain. I helped my first student prepare for the ACT a few years ago and did not adhere to any Kimberly Hudson specific ACT Prep Curriculum Course. I made no promises about making gains – I was doing this as a favor for a friend’s son. You might think that was a doomed strategy. But guess what? We made gains in all areas. Rather than teach to the test, I address underlying cognitive processes. There is some validity to teaching to specific strategies to increase chances for success when so much is at stake, and I review those strategies because every bit of information may mean the difference in an additional point. But I would rather prepare my student for success on the ACT and every test he/she takes throughout high school and college. Instead of teaching to the test, my focus is to empower students with the tools they need for academic success. To date, our largest gains have been in reading, as high as 13 points! This is as simple as assessing reading skills and providing cognitive intervention to bolster how the brain processes the printed text. Guess what? Improving reading skills leads to an increase in science scores. Reading plays a greater role in science performance than specific science content. Our students have improved by as many as 8 points in science. Math and English require a more thorough review of the content. I believe that is necessary and important, so we include this and a lot more. Our students approach the actual test knowing what it feels like to run a mental marathon. They are prepared, know how to pace themselves and know when to make that final push to the finish line. If your child’s ACT scores fell shy of their target, contact the Curious Edge and let us empower them for academic success. Info: (859) 899-3343 (EDGE) or http://thecuriousedge.com Y

My daughter, my Passport case manager, and me. When I told her what happened to my daughter, my case manager got busy. She called around to find someone who could provide my daughter with physical therapy in our home. I’d never heard of a health insurance plan going above and beyond like that. Thanks to her, my little girl has a chance to walk again.

Critics Howl But VT Helps Patients

ision Therapy sometimes gets little love from some individuals in the medical and scientific community. Some critics deride it as nothing more than a self-help program or glorified eye exercises. When Vision Therapy produces results – satisfied patients with improved vision and function – the naysayers dismiss it as no more than the placebo effect. Some even call it voodoo. Dr. Rick Graebe, a behavioral optometrist in Versailles, knows this first-hand. That’s what he was taught in optometry school at Indiana University. “I laughed at Vision Therapy along with everyone else,” Dr. Graebe said. Not any more. In more than 30 years of practice, Dr. Graebe has witnessed enough Vision Therapy success stories to know that it works. A Question of Time: Alexis Has the Answers

ere’s a question that not even Alexis Rich, an honor student at West Jessamine High, can answer. How does the 17-year-old star volleyball player squeeze so much into every day? Consider her accomplishments: She has a 4.3 GPA, scored 30 on the ACT, and by the time she graduates will have taken 11 A.P. classes. She’s a National Honor Society member and has been named the school’s top A.P. student in psychology (freshman), world history (sophomore) and biology (junior). She has been Academic All-State three years running and is active in the school’s DECA marketing club and the Health Occupations Students of America club. She’s a state champion in DECA and has competed in international events in Nashville and Anaheim. She’s a Student Council member, chair of the student service committee and the senior class treasurer. An avid reader, she recently read “Wuthering Heights” for fun. Said her father, Barry, a former offensive lineman at Kentucky: “When she was young we had to take books away from her so she could go to sleep at night.” Oh, she also plays the piano, attends Bible study once a week, showed cattle in 4-H events and babysits around the

neighborhood. (She even chicken sits for neighbors who raise backyard hens.) How does she do it all? She really loves learning, she’s organized and a skillful time manager. “She pays attention in class and anytime she has a free moment in school she does homework,” her mother Suzannah said. “She’ll read a textbook cover to cover.” Said Alexis: “I keep a planner and make checklists. I love checklists. I do love to learn and I’m sad that there isn’t enough time to take all the classes I want to take in high school.” She has accomplished all this while earning first-team All-State recognition as a junior. A 5-foot-9 setter, Alexis has been team captain for three years and led the Colts last year to their first trip to the volleyball State tournament. The Colts reached the Elite 8 and Alexis was named to the AllTournament team. She was All-Region as a freshman and sophomore, and last year was the Region 12 Player of the Year. She also plays for the Lexington United club team and has accepted a full scholarship to play Division I volleyball at Fairfield University in Connecticut where she will study business and premed. Sound like too much of a workload for college? Don’t worry. Alexis will find time to make it work. Y

October 2017 presents:

educator of the month

Becky Wood “I don’t like to see kids sitting around waiting. I like a busy classroom, and kids are allowed to talk and move around.”

M

aybe Becky Wood’s first grade students at Cassidy Elementary love her because she’s patient and nurturing, uses handson manipulatives and encourages movement in the classroom. Or maybe it’s because she’s flexible, prefers kindness to threats, accepts mess and welcomes classroom conversation with the kids. Or maybe it’s because she gives students choice throughout the day, and instead of assigning homework, she asks children to play card games and read books with their parents. Or maybe it’s just because she sings all day long. “Oh, I use well over 100 songs and have a song for every occasion,” Wood said. “Even for signals when I need their attention, I use a song so my message is child-centered.” Sample: “Give me 5, give me 4. Give me 3-2-1. I need eyes. I need ears. I need everyone.” That formula has worked well for Wood over her 28-year career in education that started in Ohio, took her to Sheffield, England then to Oklahoma and finally to Lexington. In England, she taught child development to prospective educators at a two-year college.

After five years at Dixie Elementary, she’s in her sixth year at Cassidy. Wood’s educational philosophy is rooted in child development. One minute, she’s singing and the next she invokes the work of psychologists Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky – pioneers in child development. “I don’t like to see kids sitting around waiting,” Wood said. “I like a busy classroom, and kids are allowed to talk and move around. Sometimes it gets a little loud and a little messy, but it’s worth the effort.” She also enjoys interacting with the students, saying, “Relationships are where learning begins. If children feel loved, they will want to learn.” Her position on homework is also based on solid research, which shows that it’s an ineffective way to learn, especially for young children. So throw out the worksheets and pick up those playing cards where children develop number fluency. Wood practices what she preaches. A favorite pastime is playing dominoes and Yahtzee with her 18-year-old daughter. Wood also loves to cook and she sets a pretty table. But education is her passion. “Teaching is an act of service,” she said. “I teach because I can’t think of anything else that would fulfill me the same way.”
