PARENTAL RESOLUTIONS: NEW YEAR IS TIME FOR CHANGE
A
review of statistics about New Year’s resolutions suggests that the simple act of making a resolution makes it 10 times more likely that you will be successful than if you don’t make a vow to change. The desire to do things differently really does matter! Parents who want their children to make resolutions to be cheerful, cooperative, obedient, kind and diligent need to consider how their own resolutions will make those changes possible. Influence is a far greater power than control. Here are some suggestions for resolutions for parents to consider: t Listen before I respond and be curious rather than angry. t Say, “Let me think about it.” Let my yeses and nos be clear. t Treat my child with respect. t Apologize when I make a mistake. t Greet my child with a big smile whenever I see her. t Keep my electronics away during the evening. Set limits for the family. t Spend time together. t Go out into nature and find something new. t Splash in puddles. t Read. t Look at the stars and wonder… often. 6 | www.lexingtonfamily.com
t Before saying, “Get up!” say, “Hello, Sunshine” and offer a hug. t Find a way to make the morning routine less stressful and more relaxed. t Visit the humane society and play with the animals. t Involve children in decisions about meals, outings and trips. Value their opinions. Just making a resolution and attaching a time or number of times to it makes you more likely to carry through. Sharing your plans with another person bumps your success rate up another notch. If you need even a little more incentive and encouragement, take a parenting workshop or course. The Parent and Family Enrichment Center is here to help. Remember, it’s the everyday things in everyday life that matter most to your children. Those are the things they will remember. Lesley Iwinski is a Lexington mother of three grown children, a family physician and Executive Director of The Parent and Family Enrichment Center, Inc. and Growing Peaceful Families. She offers classes, workshops and seminars based on the work of author Kathryn Kvols. Info for Lesley: (859) 333-3053 or www. GrowingPeacefulFamilies.com. Y
his New Year, the Lexington Children’s Theatre presents “Puss in Boots,” an original adaptation that tells the story of the cleverest cat through music, rhyme, and a little participation from the audience. LCT Associate Artistic Director Jeremy Kisling is the playwright of this adaptation recommended for ages 4 and up. This is the fifth touring show that Kisling has written for LCT. In Kisling’s story, the protagonist is not the fierce, swashbuckling Puss like in the film but rather a feminine feline that uses her brain over brawn. Director Octavia Biggs hopes the story and character will make an impact on young girls in the audience who want to make transformations in their lives. Performances of “Puss in Boots” are Sunday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. at the Lexington Children’s Theatre Main Stage, 418 W. Short St. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for children and can be purchased online at lctonstage.org/tickets or by contacting the Box Office. Info: www.lctonstage.org or 2544546. Y

I bristle at the word “training.” I am referring mostly to “behavior training.” It implies indoctrinating someone to follow a strict set of guidelines. Don’t Let the Cold Slow You Down How to Keep Your Family Active During Winter Months
L
exington mother Alicia Fedewa adjusts her family’s activity during the winter months only slightly. She insists on taking her 4-year-old daughter Vada outside daily no matter the weather. So weekend walks at the arboretum are a year-round pursuit. Alicia also brings Vada to work with her at UK every day, traveling the 1.5 mile trip by foot or by bicycle. Yup, Vada has been riding a bike to work since she was 3. At first, she used a glider but when she turned 4, she taught herself to ride a bike and off she goes every morning with mom. “Yes, people are surprised and ask, ‘Can she really walk that far?’” Alicia said. “But this is what she is used to do and she does fine.” In January and February, Alicia also works in trips for Vada and her 1-year-old brother Eric to local indoor playgrounds like Monkey Joe’s and Kids Place. It’s all about keeping active. “We intentionally moved to be close to work so we could walk and bike every day,” she said. “It’s good to create these habits when our kids are young. Plus all the research shows that there is a connection between physical activity and well-being.” Alicia, an associate professor of psychology at UK, is a member of the Tweens Nutrition and Fitness Coalition. Tweens Chairperson Anita Courtney offered the following tips to help keep your family moving no matter how low the temperature drops: Embrace the cold Be active at home Join a gym or recreational facility.
Embrace the cold!
v Find a winter activity that your
family enjoys: hiking, skating, skiing, disc golf and even camping. v Check out the book Hike the Bluegrass: Your Guide to Hiking, Walking and Strolling Across Central Kentucky by Valerie Askren. There are some hidden gems to explore. 10 | www.lexingtonfamily.com
v Bundle up. Coats, hats, gloves, socks and scarves designed for cold weather can make a world of difference in how much you enjoy being outdoors in winter months. v The body acclimates. The more you spend time in the cold, in most cases, the more comfortable you will become. You may even find cold temperatures invigorating over time. v Depending on the age of your kids, make it a goal to visit every park in Lexington with a playground throughout the winter months. Keep a notebook and write comments about each one so you know which parks to revisit. For more details, visit www.wecanky.org/ lexington.html.
Be active at home
v Have some active things
Alicia Fedewa with her children Eric, 1, and Vada, 4
around your home for kids to play inside – foam balls and bats, hula hoops, jump ropes, ping pong table, etc. Keep them in view and easily accessible so kids will be more likely to use them. v Consider getting a Wii Fit or workout DVDs. v Search the web for free online fitness classes (Zumba, yoga, circuit training) or get a subscription to a class series. The web site www.gonoodle.com has free, fun workouts for kids. v Create some family traditions. Do an online Zumba class every night after dinner, do yoga with your kids before bed, take turns making playlists for a 20minute dance party. v Check out the Move More tab on the We Can KY! website www.wecanky.org/ Move-More
Join a Gym or Recreational Facility
v The YMCA has scholarships for families who can’t afford a membership. v Agree upon a schedule for going to the gym – shoot for at least three times a week. If you sign up for a team or classes, go to them! v At a variety of recreational facilities in Lexington, children and adults can sign up for indoor sports teams – volleyball, soccer, basketball, hockey, swim teams, karate and martial arts. v Join a climbing gym. Kids and parents can do this together. Just be ready for your kids being way better at it than you are. v Contra dancing can be a fun family activity. Contra dances are held the first Saturday of every month at 8 p.m. at Arts Place. Beginners welcome. Y

Susan M. Monohan, MD Family Practice Associates
Dr. Susan Monohan is board certified in both Pediatrics and Internal Medicine and enjoys taking care of children, from birth through adulthood. She is originally from Winchester, KY and grew up wanting to be a physician. After graduating from Transylvania University in 1996, she went on to medical school at the University of Kentucky where she graduated in 2000 with distinction. Her residency at Indiana University prepared her to take care of both children and adults. Dr. Monohan is married to a physician and they have 3 children of their own. She feels that being a parent helps her to relate better to the issues parents face today. Dr. Monohan believes that being a pediatrician involves much more than just treating medical conditions and does her best to help parents raise well rounded, healthy children. In 2011, Family Practice Associates was pleased to welcome Dr. Monohan to our family. With 9 years of private practice experience, she is an excellent asset to our office. Family Practice Associates recently celebrated 30 years of service to the Lexington community. Our practice consists of 9 board certified physicians, 2 nurse practitioners and 1 licensed family & marriage therapist. We offer a wide variety of primary care services, including a full service laboratory. For your convenience, we also offer evening and Saturday appointments. Our practice utilizes an electronic health record, including an online patient portal to make it easier for you to communicate with your provider. In addition, Family Practice Associates is a certified Patient Centered Medical Home. Preemies Have Many Health Issues (This is the second of two stories.) Babies born before 37 weeks gestation are considered premature and often have multiple heath issues. For example, premature infants often have trouble breathing. In the latter stages of pregnancy a baby will start to produce a detergent that lines the inside of its lungs called surfactant, which allows the lungs to expand easily. If born before she starts making it, a premature baby can struggle to breathe or have to breathe faster to try to get oxygen. These babies frequently need surfactant placed in their lungs through a tube down their windpipes. They may need to be on a ventilator or at least need supplemental oxygen given in the nose or by a special hood over their heads. Since a premature baby’s respiratory drive center in his brain may not be fully mature, he may forget to breathe at times. This is called apnea of prematurity. It is often detected by monitoring the baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels: both will drop if he stops breathing. If persistent,

Dr. Graebe: New Tools for New Year
T
he new year means new technology for Dr. Graebe, a behavioral optometrist in Versailles, who prides himself on keeping his office on the cutting edge of breakthroughs that benefit his patients. The latest addition to Dr. Graebe’s arsenal of weapons against impaired vision is an advanced aberrometer. This new diagnostic machine can identify higher orders of aberrations in a patient’s eye, The first order of aberrations are nearand far-sightedness. Higher orders of aberrations are measured in the curvature of the cornea. Determining more exact measurements in corneal curvature allows Dr. Graebe to prescribe more precise lenses used
for corneal molding, which can stop and reverse near-sightedness. In addition, these precise measurements lead to more accurate prescriptions for high definition lenses – another recent innovation in the field. HD lenses are to regular lenses what HD TV is to regular TV. HD lenses provide sharper, higher contrast vision. More expensive than regular lenses, the HD version is not for everyone. But certain patients need the sharpest vision possible for optimal performance in their profession. Pilots, engineers, physicians, even truck drivers who drive long hours at night lead the list of such patients. But many of Dr. Graebe’s patients choose HD lenses once they have “seen” the difference. Dr. Rick Graebe “For some people, these lenses Family Eyecare Associates & aren’t worth the extra cost,” he said. Children’s Vision and Learning Center “But for our clients who need sharp 105 Crossfield Drive, Versailles myfamilyvision.com • 859-879-3665 vision for letters and numbers, their

vision is improved.” The aberrometer also can diagnose “dry eye” syndrome more accurately. As Dr. Graebe points out, from the ages of 18-65, we lose 60% function in tear production because the tear glands clog and atrophy. Once diagnosed, this issue is resolved with an inexpensive eye lash shampoo that Dr. Graebe can supply. In his practice, non-glare coating on lenses – another innovation that sharpens vision – is popular. Once patients try them, they prefer the results. “We are a patient-centric office,” Dr. Graebe said. “I thank heavens for all the smart people out there who have developed this new technology that improves visual performance for our patients. “I’m proud and humbled that we draw patients from more than 300 zip codes to our office. I hear our patients say all the time, ‘You really care about me getting better.’ That is very gratifying.” Y

The Conversation Project Talk to Your Family About End of Life Care Before You Need It By Kim Livesay
W
hen surveyed, all of us agree that advance care planning is critically important. Yet less than one-third of us take the time to complete a living will or have a conversation about our values, preferences and choices regarding medical care in the event of a terminal diagnosis. The nationally acclaimed program, The Conversation Project, notes that... “Too many people are dying in a way they wouldn’t choose, and too many of their loved ones are left feeling bereaved, guilty and uncertain. “It is time to transform our culture so we shift from not talking about dying to talking about it. “It is time to share the way we want to
live at the end of our lives. And it is time to communicate about the kind of care we want and don’t want for ourselves.”
care planning. For more information on how to start the conversation with your family and to find resources that will help you engage in advance care planning, visit our website at www.hospicebg.org/ advancecareplanning.
You have the right to make choices about your medical care, and this right continues even if you are unable to communicate due to illness or injury. At Hospice of the Bluegrass, we have seen that difficult decisions about medical care are much easier for families that have had conversations about preferences for medical care well in advance. At Hospice of the Bluegrass we are committed to community and professional education. We offer presentations at no charge on a wide range of topics including advance

can’t say I have always been big on making New Year’s Resolutions. Did you know that the word resolution also means determination and strong will? I might give more thoughtful consideration to this practice in the future. My oldest daughter had a car accident on her 17th birthday this fall. She totaled her car on a rainy night, and we counted ourselves blessed to be taking her home from the emergency room with only cuts and bruises, and a massive headache. A few days passed and her headaches did not improve. She tried to return to school and could not tolerate the lights, the noise and the rigorous cognitive regimen. My mother’s intuition told me something was not quite right. Early in my career as a speech-language pathologist I worked in rehab. My daughter’s blank look when I peered into her eyes, her slow response time, her struggle to find the right words to articulate her thoughts, her poor recall of information I knew she had learned gave me pause. Then, one night she told one of her friends, “Your talk is worse than your bark!” My heart dropped to my stomach. Even though two separate examinations by medical doctors deemed her okay, I knew the evidence did not make sense. I was determined to find out what was going on with her. I took her to a doctor in Louisville who confirmed she had a closed head injury.
I
share this personal story because my situation was different, but my gut instincts were the same as most of the mothers who walk through my office doors. They all sense that their children are not performing to their potential but do not know why. But they have the same resolve I had to leave no stone unturned in search of a solution for my daughter. If you think you should pursue help for your child, do not wait. Have the resolve to find the solution. We have helped kindergarten through college students get the tools they need for academic success. We have the knowledge and resources to get your child from where they are to where you know they should be. Info: (859) 899-3343(EDGE) or http://thecuriousedge.com.

What to Do When Birthdays Fall Only Days Apart
O
ne of the unwritten rules of motherhood is to make sure your children feel special on their birthday. But what if you’re a mother whose kids have birthdays just a few days apart? Do you have more than one cake at a party? Or is it an imposition to invite the same people to two or more parties a few days apart? Nichole Satterwhite, a mother of five children and expecting baby number six, has learned how to handle this situation for her family. Among her children, Madison

(16 years old) and Chase (9) have birthdays three days apart in September. Mia (4) was born on Feb. 26, and Macy’s (6) birthday is March 1. Lost in that shuffle is March 2, Nichole’s birthday. Her husband, Justin, was born on June 4. The due date for child No. 6? You guessed it. June 4. From the beginning, Nichole decided to have separate parties for her kids. This decision was motivated by the belief that her children are only small for a short time and they deserve to feel special on

their birthdays. As a stay-at-home mom, Nichole loves to plan parties. And she’s learned the art of the no-pressure party by taking it on as fun project. She’s thrown ninja parties, hosted a lemonade stand themed party and had a Red White and “Two” party when her daughter Morgan turned 2 on July 2. With five children, her own birthday can seem like an afterthought. But Nichole isn’t complaining. “As long as I get some time to myself in a bookstore with a cup of coffee, I’m happy.” Y

hen Claire Wilhite of Lexington Catholic was born, she didn’t hit the ground running, it just seemed that way. Born into a family of runners, Claire has competed in 5Ks for as long as she can remember. Her mother and father are dedicated runners, and her two older brothers came of age while competing in 5Ks with mom and dad. Claire did the same and also followed her brothers into another family sport – soccer. Both brothers played, and her father, David, took up the sport right after high school. Claire has played since she was 4 and just capped her high school career by helping Lexington Catholic to a schoolrecord 24-win season. The Lady Knights advanced to the State final where they lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Sacred Heart. A 5-foot-11, 145-pound defender with the best throw-in around, Claire was named the team’s most versatile player as a junior and earned AllDistrict and All-Regional recognition as a senior. Her two favorite memories are the team’s run to the State final this year and winning Lexington Catholic’s Challenge Cup title last year. While gratifying, those accomplishments take a back seat to Claire’s work in the classroom.

She’s a straight-A student with a 4.0 GPA and has taken five A.P. classes. She has realized one goal by matching her father’s score on the ACT – 31. She is a first team Academic All-State selection and has the team’s highest GPA. She maintains high grades despite numerous extracurricular activities and working a job at Panera that has her up on weekends before dawn. “She’s a real night owl,” her mother Elaine said. “She will stay up as late as she needs to get her work done. “She’s organized, a self-starter, selfmotivated and competitive.” Claire is a National Honor Society and Beta Club member, treasurer of the school service club, and coached second and third graders to two Battle of the Books championships. A painter who also works in ceramics, she has a heart for service. Claire has taken mission trips to Eastern Kentucky and Grenada. “Being able to help people is gratifying, and you get a sense of joy when you’re working with them,” she said. About the only thing Claire hasn’t done is run on the school track team – odd given her family’s avocation. But she’s fixing that. She plans to run the hurdles this season. More hurdles? That should be no problem for Claire. Y

ASBURY UNIVERSITY presents:
Educator of the Month January 2016
SARAH LEAVELL W hen it comes to meeting the needs of their students, dedicated teachers do whatever it takes — even if that means becoming effective grant writers. That was the case for Sarah Leavell, a Reading Recovery and Reading Intervention teacher at Julius Marks Elementary. A first-grade teacher for the first 10 of her 13-year career, Leavell witnessed a spike in the remedial needs of her students as the demographics of the school changed. At Julius Marks, four of five students are on free or reduced lunch, and many of those students had reading problems. “I knew I needed more intense training to help those students improve their reading quickly,” Leavell said. So she wrote an “i3” (Investing in Innovation) grant to fund six hours of graduate school training. She won the grant and for a year drove
to Madison County once a week for four hours of instruction. That qualified her as a reading interventionist and she worked with small groups of first graders. She realized they still needed more. So, she wrote another grant — a state Read to Achieve grant that would fund her salary at the school as a Reading Recovery teacher. Leavell won this highly competitive grant, too, and got to work with the lowest performing first graders in the school. “To get the grant was a huge victory and cause for celebration,” she said. In one-on-one, 30-minute sessions with four students, Leavell transforms the children into gradelevel readers in 20 weeks or sooner. The process starts with “roaming,” a 10-day period in which Leavell learns about student interests. Once identified, she creates a curriculum that embraces those interests.

Leavell finds that animals are a favorite topic — from ninja turtles to cats to green gorillas (yes, green gorillas. Go with the flow). The program works so well in part because professional development includes monthly sessions where colleagues observe each other teaching and offer feedback. “I love the way she teaches,” Principal Lynn Poe said. “She doesn’t settle. She sets the bar high, and she’s blessed with a big heart.” Blessed with a big heart… and also a wonderful job. “It’s the most rewarding feeling,” Leavell said about the one-on-one work with students. “You become their friend, and you have created an experience with the child that both of us will never forget.”
