FEBR UARY 2014
As part of the program, Lexington Medical Center is partnering with Midlands businesses in February to provide free heart-health events, such as exercise classes and stress-relief activities, including bowling and painting. The hospital will also host an interactive Heart Fair on March 2 at the DoubleTree by Hilton on Bush River Road. In addition, LMC is highlighting the importance of calling 911 if someone is having a heart attack or stroke. Because ambulances have EKG machines, paramedics can send EKG results on the way to the hospital and patients can go straight into treatment upon arrival. Quick treatment for heart attack and stroke can help limit damage to the brain or heart, and increase the chance of a full recovery. You can learn more about how to Take 5 for Heart Health and sign up for free heart-health activities at LexMed.com/Take5.

Eat every 3 to 5 hours during the day to avoid overeating at mealtimes. Use simple breathing techniques to lower your heart rate and blood pressure. Strive for 30 minutes or more of moderate physical activity on most days of the week. When it comes to heart attack and stroke, call 911 instead of driving yourself or a loved one to an emergency department. If someone needs CPR, push hard and push fast.
Intercom is published by LMC’s Marketing department. Editorial material and pictures are solicited and should be sent to Marketing. Materials submitted for publication will not be returned unless otherwise requested. The Marketing department reserves the right to accept or deny any article and/or photo for publication. “The committee provides a forum to promote the development of patient education materials composed of evidence-based clinical information that can be understood by everyone,” said Carol Beckett, clinical educator in the Center for Best Practice. Distributed by hospital staff, patient education materials can be written, visual or audiovisual. Employees are encouraged to identify the need for new materials and forward those requests to the Center for Best Practice. The committee also revises booklets, binders and folders to ensure education materials are up-to-date and relevant.
