New Heart Procedure Available at LMC Lexington Medical Heart Center now offers non-surgical closure for atrial septal defects (ASDs) and patent foramen ovale (PFO). This minimally invasive procedure eliminates the need for these patients to have open heart surgery, resulting in shorter hospital stays and faster recovery. “The percutaneous ASD/ PFO closure procedure is a good example of a catheterbased, ‘structural’ interventional procedure that allows patients to have permanent, definitive treatment of a structural heart problem without the need for open heart surgery,” said Dr. Robert Leonardi of Lexington Cardiology. “This is all part of our heart center’s goal to provide collaborative, comprehensive, patientcentered therapies for all kinds of heart disease, including
minimally invasive options.” Dr. Leonardi will perform the ASD/PFO procedure with a highly skilled team of nurses and cardiovascular technicians from the Cardiac Cath Lab as well as ultrasound technicians from the Echocardiography Lab. Patients with ostium secundum ASD, a birth defect that is one of the most common ASDs, have a hole in the wall of the heart that separates the upper two chambers. This causes blood to flow across the opening from the left atrium to the right atrium, resulting in more blood being delivered to the right side of the heart. While those with small atrial defects may never have symptoms or complications, people with
larger defects are at greater risk for heart failure, arrhythmias or stroke. Many of these patients aren’t identified until adulthood when they begin to develop symptoms, such as shortness of breath. During the procedure, the physician makes a small incision, typically in the groin, and inserts a catheter to reach the defect. Using fluoroscopy and intracardiac echocardiography, the physician guides the device through the catheter and slowly pushes it out to cover the defect, sealing it closed. Over time, tissue grows over the device and it becomes part of the heart. LMC offers this non-surgical option to adults.

PFO anatomy
“While ASD/PFO closure can be done with open heart surgery, research has shown that percutaneous closure of ASD and PFO is very effective with fewer complications and faster recovery when compared to open surgical closure.”
After the device is pushed through the sheath using the delivery cable, the left atrial disc is deployed using fluoroscopy and echocardiography.
The device is gently pulled against the atrial septum.
With tension on the delivery cable, the sheath is pulled back to deploy the right atrial disc.
The delivery cable is rotated counterclockwise to release the device.

On Point at Otarre Pointe
Each month, Intercom will feature updates on construction at Lexington Medical Park Otarre Pointe until the facility opens this fall.
Lexington Medical Park Otarre Pointe is taking shape at the 12th Street Extension in Cayce. Construction is more than halfway complete with plans to open this fall. Brick masonry is almost finished on the exterior of the building while the windows continue to be installed. Drywall installation for interior walls is proceeding well. Installation on air-handling units and cabinetry will begin this month. When Lexington Medical Park Otarre Pointe opens, it will be a two-story, 70,000-sq-ft medical complex. Additionally, a new Lexington Family Practice location will provide primary care services. Lexington Family Practice Otarre Pointe gives employees of local businesses and their families a convenient option for walk-in care for non-workrelated injuries and illnesses. Henry Martin Jr., MD, an original founder of Lexington Family Practice with more than 38 years of experience, will anchor this location with Payton Foust, MD. A S.C. native, Dr. Foust will be joining the hospital’s network after completing his family medicine residency at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood, S.C. Other services at Lexington Medical Park Otarre Pointe will include X-ray, lab, physical and occupational therapy, and meeting space for wellness initiatives and training. The second floor will be reserved for future growth.
Health care providers and staff from Lexington Endocrinology and Lexington Medical Center volunteered at this year’s Tour de Cure event on May 3. Tour de Cure is a series of fundraising cycling events that benefit the American Diabetes Association. With routes designed for everyone from the occasional rider to the experienced cyclist, participants can ride from 5 to 100 miles across several counties, ending at the finish line in Columbia. “We have numerous patients battling diabetes and felt this was a great way for us to get involved and represent Lexington Medical Center,” said Johnette Kinard, practice manager at Lexington Endocrinology. Several LMC employees also participated in this year’s Tour de Cure. For Mark Shelley, vice president of Marketing and Communications, this event was personal. “As someone living with type 1 diabetes, I know the importance of continued research and the resources needed to manage this disease,” he said. “Together, we can make a difference in the fight against diabetes!”

Atmosphere/Environment —————————————————— I will make sure my department is neat, clean and odor-free. The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Survey measures hospital environments by specifically asking, “During this hospital stay, how often were your room and bathroom kept clean?” This responsibility does not fall solely on Environmental Services. We are all responsible for keeping the hospital clean by picking up anything that looks out of place. We may think that we do not need to worry about cleaning “someone else’s mess,” but keeping our hallways and work areas free from litter is extremely important. While it can be challenging to ensure that our work areas are neatly managed and odor-free, it’s everyone’s responsibility. —————————————————— I will make sure that trash is emptied and spills are cleaned quickly. When you discover that a work area or patient room has an excess of trash, call Environmental Services or take care of it yourself. With spills, we are responsible for consistent checks and cleanings, which are essential for patient safety as well as the well-being of co-workers.
On April 21, the Lexington Medical Center Foundation hosted the Jay Criscione Golf Tournament for Charity at the Country Club of Lexington, which raised more than $21,500 for the hospital’s Cancer Care Fund. This fund helps patients focus on healing by providing a variety of care programs for in-need patients, including vital medication assistance, preventive screenings, post-surgical kits and financial support. More than 25 corporate partners from Lexington Medical Center also participated in the tournament, including platinum sponsors Hood Construction and Lexington Oncology. The Foundation extended special appreciation to platinum sponsors Hood Construction and Lexington Oncology.
Welcome, Partners The Partners Program at LMC is a summer career awareness program providing Lexington County’s most ambitious high school students with the opportunity to explore careers in health care and work alongside hospital staff in clinical areas. This year, 62 students were selected to participate from 13 Lexington high schools. The Partners Program is possible through the LMC Foundation, which provides educational materials and other supplies to each participant.

Healing
For the fifth year in a row, Lexington Medical Center sponsored the Art of Healing, a juried art competition for high school students in Lexington County.
Art teachers from each high school selected art from their school to enter. All artwork had to incorporate healing or health. Steven Ford, owner of Steven Ford Interiors, Jane Przybysz, executive director of the McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina, and Michael Story, an award-winning fine artist, judged the entries and selected the winners. “We wanted to give students the opportunity to express their interpretation of ‘healing’ through artwork,” said Barbara Willm, vice president of Community Relations. “Every year, the quality of artwork impresses us more and more. It is a wonderful experience for students to have their artwork displayed at the Columbia Museum of Art for our community to see.” These projects included paintings, photographs and sculptures. Each student also wrote a description with background information on each piece and how it depicts healing.
