ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO: A collection of designs and creative works by Leyla Oz
FLIPPED: An inner city high school for the arts located in Prince Alfred Park The school acts as an inventory that collects, archives and distributes all matters that are involved in the learning process of the student. The accessibility of this inventory is, however, negotiated by the school as a mechanism of introducing the students to a method of learning which prioritises the engagement with previous works and existing resources. This negotiation is facilitated by the inversion of the traditional space of circulation, or the corridor, with the conventional space of learning, the classroom. Therefore, the classroom, or what has been newly defined as the space of accessing resources, becomes a series of interconnected courtyards. The continuity of these courtyards throughout the school is reiterated through a single surface that weaves between all spaces of the school. This surface begins to operate as a platform for documenting the use and manipulation of given resources. The surface itself hence begins to transform and adapt to the students’ working methods. Ultimately, the surface will break away from the rigid and systematic way in which resources are provided in the school.
The inventory, within the school, acts as a memory store that collects, archives and distributes all matters that are involved in the learning process of the student. From research, to discussion, to iteration and to fabrication; all stages of the learning process are documented and curated in the inventory as resources. The distribution of these resources is operated by a retrieval system that comprises of three different types of columns; equipment, multimedia, and written documents. The accessibility of these resources is therefore governed through the placement of the classroom. Each classroom is located in the school depending on the resources it needs; with direct access to two types of columns.

HABITS OF DISOBEDIENCE: Spaces of disobedience accommodate for the expression of individual and collective desires that are contradictory of societal norms, therefore exposing the flaws in the political structures which uphold these biased morals. SEXUALISATION OF SYDNEY Although appearing divorced from moral considerations, the City of Sydney’s discourses of urban planning have tended to privilege heterosexual, monogamous relationships. This is reflected in the manifestation of urban landscapes which normalise the heterosexual, domestic family, suggesting that commercial sex is something that threatens both public health and morality when placed within public view. Within Sydney, there exists a network of disobedience found through sexual deviance, namely in the form of bath houses and brothels. The conflict between those who control urban space and the sexualisation of the city lies in the way commercial sex premises occupy, HABITS OF DISOBEDIENCE reuse, and transform the conventional domestic space. Although these spaces of disobedience do not directly attack or criticise cherished beliefs or institutions, they create an aversion to a standardised political image. The principles that exist within these spaces do not seek to be right but exist as an expression of a change of state ultimately cultivating a fear of exposing the flaws in the current political system. THE MODES OF CONSTITUTING THE CITY ARE SO WELL CODED AND PLANNED THAT THEY INDUCE ADVANCED INSTRUCTIONS FOR ITS PROPER USAGE. SPACES IN THE CITY HAVE BEEN DICTATED BY LAWS AND REGULATIONS THAT OPERATE AS DIRECTIONS FOR USE AND ARE INTOLERANT TOWARDS THEIR CHANGE OR TRANSFORMATION. THESE LAWS AND REGULATIONS CANNOT BE DERIVED FROM INDIVIDUAL MORAL IDEALS ALONE, HENCE ARE JUSTIFIED THROUGH ALL INHERENT VALUES OF HEALTH, EDUCATION, AND SECURITY THAT ARE SPATIALISED AS THE INSTITUTIONS OF THE HOSPITAL, THE SCHOOL, THE DOMESTIC RESIDENCE, AND THE CHURCH. HOWEVER, SUBMISSION TO THE MECHANISMS OF AUTHORITY AND POWER DOES NOT BENEFIT ANYONE EXCEPT THOSE WHO SERVE AS VEHICLES FOR THE POLITICAL NARRATIVE.
SPACES OF DISOBEDIENCE ACCOMODATE FOR THE EXPRESSION OF INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE DESIRES THAT ARE CONTRADICTORY OF SOCIETAL NORMS, THEREFORE EXPOSING THE FLAWS IN THE POLITICAL STRUCTURES WHICH UPHOLD THESE BIASED MORALS. ALTHOUGH APPEARING DIVORCED FROM MORAL CONSIDERATIONS, THE CITY OF SYDNEY’S DISCOURSES OF URBAN PLANNING HAVE TENDED TO PRIVILEGE HETEROSEXUAL, MONOGAMOUS RELATIONSHIPS. THE CONFLICT BETWEEN THOSE WHO CONTROL URBAN SPACE AND THE SEXUALISATION OF THE CITY LIES IN THE WAY COMMERCIAL SEX PREMISES OCCUPY, REUSE, AND TRANSFORM THE CONVENTIONAL DOMESTIC SPACE. IN A SIMILAR WAY, SYDNEY’S GAY BATHHOUSES BREACH THE IDEAL OF URBAN ORDER THROUGH SEMI-PUBLIC SITES OF CONGREGATION THAT PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE IN ALTERNATIVE SOCIALISATION AND SEXUAL EXPLORATION.
ALTHOUGH THESE SPACES OF DISOBEDIENCE DO NOT DIRECTLY ATTACK OR CRITICISE CHERISHED BELIEFS OR INSTITUTIONS, THEY CULTIVATE AN AVERSION TO A STANDARDISED POLITICAL IMAGE. THEY PROCEED BY EXPANDING AND EVOLVING WITHOUT BEING DIRECTED TOWARDS A CULMINATING OR CONCRETE POINT. THE PRINCIPLES THAT EXIST WITHIN THESE SPACES DO NOT SEEK TO BE RIGHT BUT EXIST AS AN EXPRESSION OF A CHANGE OF STATE ULTIMATELY CULTIVATING A FEAR OF EXPOSING THE FLAWS IN THE POLITICAL SYSTEM.

EXCLAVE: A portion or territory of one state completely surrounded by territory of another or others, as viewed by the home territory. WELCOME TO THE EXCLAVE In 2018, Sydney was in a state of political catastrophe. The citizens of this city were being slowly restrained via policy change and social conditioning into moralistic and political ideologies over which they had no control. Fragmented conditions were however already working against this quiet order. The citizenry who saddled the borders of legality, the resistant, the disobedient, were already manipulating the framework. It was the concatenation of these seperate forces that created this new nation. The Exclave is a society within and throughout the existing condition. It is coordinated and occupied for and by those in search of total emancipation. WOMEN'S

THE BANK All purchases of goods and services on the Exclave must be made using its currency. Political engagement is audited on a weekly basis through the logging system which is verified and catalogued by the bank. The data of the citizens is then translated into currency which can be collected each week. The bank also acts to ensure participation amongst citizens to avoid complacency by fluctuating the value of Exclave currency based on political engagement. Ultimately, when citizens seem to be excessively infatuated by one aspect of the Exclave it creates a ‘mini crisis’ in order to retain participation spread out along all programs.

HEARST TOWER ENVELOPE REDESIGN: A parametric redeployment of the structure and skin of the Hearst Tower in New York. INITIAL PRECEDENT STUDY - HEARST TOWER DIAGRID DETAIL The main structural system that exists within the Hearst Tower is the diagrid. A steel diagrid was chosen specifically for its ability to carry both gravitational and lateral loads without the need to rely on the core to resist lateral loading. The diagrid structure could provide sufficient stability on the perimeter of the building without requiring additional columns between the exterior wall and the core.

The precast concrete module is bolted into steel I-beams at twelve points using steel frame channels cast into the rear of each module.
AUSTRALIAN SPIDER MUSEUM: An extension of the live spider collection of the Australian Museum, Darlinghurst, relocated to 22 Charles St, Forest Lodge. CONFLICT, INDIFFERENCE, RECIPROCITY - BERNARD TSCHUMI The project began with an analysis of the site at a sequence of scales, the broader context of the city and its relationship to the proposal was analysed through photography, diagram, and model making with the underlying tones of Bernard Tschumi’s method of mapping.

CONCEPT STATEMENT
DRAWING 5
The allocation of the site on Charles street required the museum to be placed underground. This created a low lighting condition that emphasised the importance of the other senses to experience the museum.
DRAWING 4
Using hardwood timber floorboards to highlight the sound of visitors’ footsteps reciprocated the fear and discomfort associated with spiders’ feet and their rapid leg movements. The undulating floor allowed for various viewports in the vertical plane, which created moments of optimum viewing through the domed perspex spider habitats. The undulating floor plates also act as seating areas for viewers to lounge and slow down, conflicting the idea of fast moving insects.

MAP OF THE ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATION: A map of the Architectural Association (AA) depicting the connection between the projects, ideas, protagonists, and events that construct the intellectual history of the institution. ARCHIGRAM GROUP The map focuses on the publications of the Archigram group which were produced by graduates of the AA: Peter Cook, Michael Webb, Ron Herron, David Green, Warren Chalk, and Dennis Crompton. Although Archigram influenced some built projects such as the Pompidou Centre by Piano + Rogers and Nicholas Grimshaw’s Service Tower, its main influence was over architectural discourse. The Archigram Magazine was powerful because it was timeless and discussion around it was instantaneous due to its ability to be produced and distributed immediately. In contrast to the rapid nature of the magazine, built works are expendable and the discourse that surrounds a built work at the time of conception becomes less relevant by the time the project is actually constructed.
THE PRINCIPLES OF THREE DIMENSION: A photographic and cartographic exploration of the distortion and manipulation of what we see vs. what we construct of the 3D realm through mirrored and reflective surfaces.
