“ Jules Verne “Travel enables us to enrich our lives with new experiences, to enjoy and to be educated, to learn respect for foreign cultures, to establish friendships, and above all to contribute to international cooperation and peace throughout the world.” Jules Verne Chers Parents et Amis,

Dear Parents and Friends,

If you substitute “Lycée Français de Chicago” for the word “travel” in the above quote, Jules Verne could have been referring to our school.

The original 1873 novel was instrumental in opening doors to the world of new cultures. Set during a time when three travel technology innovations occurred, the construction of the Suez Canal, the completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad in the United States, and the linking of rail lines across India, it was suddenly possible for people to travel efficiently across the globe. Only years before, these achievements were strictly science fiction.

Fast forward to today; technology makes traveling personalized and convenient. Lycée students are seasoned travelers, and not just to other countries. Our teachers provide them with a map to navigate the constantly changing world of technology. Through our hands-on STEAM curriculum as well as sciences and technology courses in middle and high school, they are introduced to what an architect does, how bridges are built, the theory of physics behind invention, why solar power propels a car or a plane, and so much more. To enhance their journeys of understanding and to give them free rein to their creativity, we are thrilled to introduce the new LFC Innovation Lab, and to support its development during our Soirée. Built on Lycée property, it will further train young minds to think great thoughts. As we announce this exciting opportunity to have a physical innovation space where STEAM projects and creativity will come alive each day, please keep in mind that just like a Verne novel, the science fiction of today will indeed become the reality of tomorrow. Our students are tomorrow’s inventors, and your support tonight will empower their dreams. Thank you for joining us and for your generosity. Bonne Soirée! Sincerely, Eric Veteau

LETTRE DES CO-PRÉSIDENTS DE LA SOIRÉE LETTER FROM THE SOIRÉE CO-CHAIRS

Stephanie Pirishis and Joris Wijpkema

Elizabeth and Christophe Ridet

As Soirée co-chairs, we felt it was important to choose a theme that reflects our community, representing our beliefs and goals. This year’s Soirée theme, Around the World in 80 Days, is an ideal fit for many reasons. The story of an adventure around the world, written by the notable French author Jules Verne, parallels the daily lives of our diverse and international students and community, rooted in our core French education. Jules Verne writes about a journey around the world beginning as a wager that it could not be done in 80 days and on a relatively conservative budget. Similarly, our school has deep French roots, originating from a group of progressive parents wanting a multilingual curriculum with international exposure for their children. While those revolutionary roots are still very much present within the Lycée today, we have morphed into something even bigger. It took considerable dedication from our determined community to relocate the original Lycée in 2015. Our innovative new campus serves as the perfect backdrop to encourage worldclass learning for our students. Our capital campaign is proof that we are able to band together to accomplish great things. Although our community represents many different countries and cultures, we have one common goal: preparing our children to be future leaders and global thinkers. Just as Jules Verne was ahead of his time in pushing scientific thinking, so, too, is the Lycée as it strives to be progressive, pushing our students’ boundaries. The Raise the Paddle goal to develop a state-of-the-art LFC Innovation Lab - is a further reflection of the school’s desire to prepare our children to discover. Tonight, let us celebrate how far our community has come while we look to the future of our school, our community, and most importantly our students. As Jules Verne writes, “Anything one man can imagine, other men can make real.”

LYCÉE FRANÇAIS DE CHICAGO ANNUAL SOIRÉE 2017

INTRODUCING LFC INNOVATION LAB RAISE THE PADDLE We invite you to learn about this funding opportunity. Please join in building our students’ futures in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) at the Lycée by “raising the paddle” for the new LFC Innovation Lab. The Lab will offer space for all students, from Maternelle to Terminale, to make things, innovate and collaborate. Teachers will be able to provide more “hands-on” learning opportunities through project-based instruction in architecture, computer programming, woodworking, robotics, design, film and more.

EXPANSIVE

Your support and commitment will enable the Lycée to offer students the best programming space for creation, teamwork and invention.

MULTI-PURPOSE

Built on our campus as a multi-purpose space, the Lab will be conceived to adapt to the needs of our curriculum, present and future, from Pre-K to grade 12.

PRACTICAL

Constructed uniquely of re-purposed shipping containers, it will be affordable, movable, and environmentally responsible.

INVESTMENT: $250,000

• $155,000 Installed Lab • $95,000 Infrastructure (electrical, plumbing, FFE, soft costs) LFC Innovation Lab will be funded entirely through philanthropy. We count on our school community to help us with this investment. Your participation will enable the LFC Innovation Lab to become a reality.
