Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers December 2015 Greetings! Here we go again with the lake levels! We have shifted back to the "neighborhood" entry to the West Loop so that we can avoid the flooded portion of the course between the 1/2 and 3/4 mile mark. We are also avoiding the flooded portion on the east part of Kimball. Even with the detours, we still have a four-mile course. Routes are subject to change, as conditions change, but we will do our best to keep the latest course maps on the website. We are looking at possible contingencies for Bold in the Cold if the courses are not clear by race day. We will keep you posted when information is available. Hope you've bought your tickets for the RAW Holiday Party on Friday, December 4, at the Lancaster Theater. It's one of the major events held by the club each year, so that members can socialize and have fun! By the way, you can find this event and many more on the LGRAW website's Calendar of Events! Kathryn Gleghorn resigned her director position on the LGRAW Board of Directors in November. Per the club bylaws, the board may appoint a replacement or wait until the next regular election in July 2016. We will be discussing this issue at the next board meeting. If you have any input, please let a board member know or feel free to attend the meeting on Mon., Dec. 14 at 7:00 PM at the clubhouse. Board member e-mail addresses are on the club website here. If you would like to get more involved in the workings of the club, attending the 58th RRCA National Convention, just down the road in Dallas, is a great way to do it. If you commit to directing a club race or running for the RAW Board of Directors, the club will even consider reimbursing a portion of your convention fee. Please see details in the story below. -- Chris Morris, LGRAW President
LGRAW Bold in the Cold 5K & 15K
Register by Wed., Dec. 9, to use your RAW discount for Bold in the Cold 5K & 15K on Sat., Jan. 9, 2016!
Thank you to our sponsors for their generous support!
We are again partnering with Your Sporting Image to offer free downloads of your professional race photos. It's another added benefit that we offer for you, our racers.
We are again offering our "Couch to 5K" training program. Here's what one of our C25K participants from Double Trouble had to say about the program: I'm really excited to be running my first 5K! I've always hated running and haven't done it since I was forced to in high school P.E. class. While I've easily walked a 5K, the C25K training program has shown me that running isn't as hard as I thought it would be! Tony and his team have given us wonderful support, and I'm thrilled to be (mostly) running this race the day before my 50th birthday!
Come join us for the 5K or 15K. Both races begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2016. When you register for the race, you will receive a Bold in the Cold tech shirt. Finishers will also receive Bold in the Cold winter running gear. We will be serving hot chocolate after the race!

RRCA Convention
RRCA National Convention in Dallas offers members unique opportunity to expand their involvement Chris Morris With the RRCA National Convention being held just down the road in Dallas, LGRAW members and board members have an extremely unique opportunity in March 2016 to expand their knowledge of how running clubs work and prepare themselves for club leadership or race directing. The club has sent club members and leadership to the RRCA National Convention in the past and reimbursed a portion of their convention fees. We have boosted that fund significantly in the coming year, so that many more people are able to attend the convention without the necessity of airfare and hotels this year. If you are considering joining the leadership of the club or directing a club race in the future, you may find the educational sessions interesting. They cover many topics, including but not limited to the RRCA insurance program, how to create a running community, working with municipalities, developing training programs and setting up youth running programs. You can also complete the RRCA Coaching Certification at the convention. The registration price includes convention attendance and can be partially reimbursed by LGRAW, if you commit to directing a club race, training a "Couch to 5K" or other training course at the club. You are also free to pursue other opportunities to coach outside the club after receiving the certification. If you are interested in any of these opportunities or would like more information on qualifying for registration fee reimbursement, please contact any LGRAW board member by e-mail or in person at the clubhouse.
Giving Back to the Sport
LGRAW announces scholarship program for high school seniors graduating in Spring 2016 Chris Morris As part of our commitment to giving back to the sport and encouraging running and healthy lifestyles in the community, LGRAW has established a scholarship for a graduating high school senior, beginning with Spring 2016. Graduates of GCISD are eligible to apply, as well as graduates of any school as long as a parent has been an LGRAW member for at least the past two years. Applicants must have participated in track or cross country in their junior and senior years, must attend
a 2-year or 4-year college and must graduate high school with a grade point average of at least 2.5. The scholarship is for $2,000, paid half in the first semester and half in the second semester of the student's first year of college. The scholarship is not renewable, so a different graduating senior will be chosen each year. The scholarship application will be available soon and must be received by mail at LGRAW, P.O. Box 2982, Grapevine, TX, 76099, or by e-mail at runnersandwalkers@lgraw.com by March 1, 2016.
In Step With
Robin Waguespack: Five years and lots of running friends How long have you been an LGRAW club member? Five years. Wow, time flies! How long have you been running? Do you have any long-term or short-term running goals? I've been running five years. I started at nearly 38 years young. Short-term goal is a sub-2 half. Tell us about your first race. My first race was in McKinney. It was a 5K. My sister Crisann Becker came out and ran it with me. Ran is probably the wrong word. I think I had a 14-minute pace. What do you enjoy about running? The friends I've made. It's my social hour or two hours. I also love the way I feel during and after I run. It's cliche, but I just feel mentally healthier after I run. Where is your favorite place to run? I have to say the lake, right? Actually it is because of the different elevations and scenery. I enjoy the wildlife and sunrises. Do you have any running advice or insight for others? For newbies, Don't quit. Stick with it in the winter and summer too. It gets better. What is your favorite running memory? I paced a half recently and saw tons of folks on the course I knew and was saying hi to everyone. It was fantastic, and then a lady asked me if I was in a running club. I said yes, but those are all people I know from outside the club. Runners are so positive and

friendly for the most part. It's incredible. What do you do in your life outside the club? Spend time with family. Movies. I enjoy yard work, crafts and sewing also. Do you do any cross training? Not really. I like riding my bike and swimming but don't do them nearly enough.
What's something about you that would surprise us? Hmmm, I don't know.
Road Runners Club of America News We Run the Nation: Growing the Sport of Running Since 1958
Texas clubs and events lead contributors to Kids Run the Nation for 2015 Kelly "K2" Richards, RRCA At-Large Director, RAW member Things really are bigger in Texas, so it's no surprise that combined, Texas clubs and events including RAW's Bold in the Cold and Double Trouble (2014*), were the largest contributors, of any state, to the RRCA's Kids Run the Nation Fund in 2015. Twenty-eight programs serving more than 11,000 children were selected for Kids Run the Nation grants and will receive a total of $22,760 from the RRCA. The RRCA will also donate more than 13,000 copies of the "Kids Run the Nation: A Running Guide for Kids" to be given to program participants in 26 different programs, an in-kind donation valued at over $14,000. Based on the submission from RAW in 2012, Grapevine was named an RRCA Runner Friendly Community (RFC). An RFC should have support from the local community and by Runner Friendly Businesses (RFB) who are engaged with the running community. RFB host group runs and share their parking lots during non-business hours; allow runners to use their bathroom facilities as needed; serve as safe places that runners can stop at

if they need to use the phone or get out of unsafe weather, or fill a water bottle to prevent dehydration; and support clubs through race sponsorships including in-kind donations, publicity, etc. Having met these criteria, Grapevine Craft Brewery was named an official RRCA Runner Friendly Business in November 2015. The 2015 National Running Award nomination period is open. To see a list of awards, the criteria for each, and how to nominate someone, go to http://www.rrca.org/programs/national-running-awards/. If you'd like to serve on an award selection committee, contact Andy Smith at Programs@RRCA.org. Registration is opening for The 58 th Annual RRCA National Convention. The convention is March 17-19, 2016, and hosted by the Dallas Running Club. RAW is subsidizing the registration costs for those meeting specific criteria. See the article in this month's Footprint for more information. Stay connected to the RRCA by liking them on Facebook and following them on Twitter and Instagram. *The donation from the 2014 DT was made in 2015.
Grapevine Craft Brewery Third Tuesday Social Run
Kelly "K2 Richards The first three 'Third Tuesday of the Month Social Runs' *starting and ending at Grapevine Craft Brewery have been a fun success. One of the reasons the social runs were created was for outreach, especially to those people RAW wasn't reaching with our weekend runs. This is perhaps where we've been most successful with the social runs, as around 50% of the participants had never been to RAW, are brand new to running, are coworkers, friends or family of RAW members, or are members of other area running clubs (namely Denton Area Running Club and Irving Running Club). The social runs have also engaged some inactive RAW members who we're thrilled to see again or for the first time. A nice-sized walking group has materialized, too. The run/walk is a nice start to the evening, but the socializing is the most fun! Following the run, the beer garden fills up quickly as the veteran members and newbies become fast friends and trivia teammates. Tuesday is Trivia Night at the brewery, so everyone gets to exercise their minds in addition to their legs. It turns out runners aren't just competitive when it comes to racing, so don't think they are sharing their answers, if you're not on their team. Beer might be the preferred carbo-loading method for many, but don't worry, you can refuel with food, too. Each day a different food truck is on-site, and several local restaurants deliver food to the brewery, as well. When it's all fun and games, it must be the Third Tuesday of the Month. To get in a run, beer, dinner, trivia and social time with your run-buds, join the next Third Tuesday of the Month Social Run on December 15 at 6:00 PM. The Taproom and Beer Garden are open until 10:00 PM, and people show up all throughout the evening to socialize but the run starts promptly at 6:00 PM. See you at the brewery. It's where the good times are. *The route is a 5K that can easily be made into a 5-miler for those who want to go longer. A map with written instruction is posted in the event page on Facebook, and others will show you the way.
Anti-Turkey Trot
The weather was on our side for the event that did not happen, the annual Anti-Turkey Trot. Nearly 50 runners (including those of the 4-legged variety) enjoyed food and fellowship after running and walking custom distances on the Northshore Trail Thanksgiving morning.

Every Christmas season, the Grapevine Police Department collects toys to give to underprivileged children in the area. This year, as always, LGRAW has a toy collection bin in the clubhouse, now through Dec. 13. Please join us in donating new, unwrapped toys appropriate for ages 0-17. If you would like more information about the toy program on when you can "shop" for gifts and wrap them for the children or how you can further volunteer with the program, check the Santa Cops website.
