Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers March 2017 Dear It has been an interesting month for running with unseasonably warm weather. February has always been the month of transitioning from cold winter runs to slightly warmer spring weather. However, this month's warm weather has made deciding what to wear a challenge. Runner's World recently published the ultimate tip sheet that gave me a few reminders for a safe and healthy weather transition. First, always have water on hand both before and after your run. Invest in a pair of running shoes that fit well and remember, shoes have a mileage life. When training, go for distance rather than time and don't worry about your pace. Include rest days and build mileage gradually while setting small achievable goals. These things help your body adjust as the weather gets warmer. I must admit, even though I have been running regularly for years, I like to revert back to the basics to prevent injury and reach goals. This past month has been an exciting month for RAW members. Nearly 30 guests came out and enjoyed our 20th Anniversary President's Day Happy Hour in February. Everyone enjoyed the happy hour with other RAW members over pizza and drinks while honoring all of RAW's past presidents. Along with Cowtown, RAW runners have participated in races both at home and away. We had a group of runners from RAW that ran the half or full marathon in New Orleans this past month. RAW members enjoyed both the race and some good Cajun food during their visit. Closer to home, several RAW members participated in the the 31st Annual Haltom Stampede. See Helene Walker's article below to find out just how well our club was represented at the race. This club is full of volunteers, and we have a number of volunteer opportunities for those who are interested. These opportunities include joining our board of directors, being part of the nominating committee, and working on this FOOTPRINT. Read the article in this FOOTPRINT that outlines volunteer opportunities in more detail. We have a lot of exciting activities for RAW members planned this spring. Upcoming events include our regular Newbie Sunday Breakfast at the clubhouse on Sunday, March 5. Come out as we welcome new members to our club. On that same day, we are hosting a CPR class for RAW members at the Grapevine REC. See the notice below for more details. See you at the lake. Diane Hernandez VP and Acting President
Support to Terry Marcott and Family RAW sends our warmest thoughts and prayers to Terry Marcott and his family during his difficult fight against stomach cancer. The Marcott family appreciates the generosity of RAW members who have been providing them with meals over the last few weeks. The family has been at Terry's bedside throughout this ordeal. Your meals relieve a tremendous burden from them having to leave the hospital,
and provide them loving sustenance through a very difficult time. If you would like to volunteer to provide a meal, please call or text David Ball at (817) 343-5579 to learn specific dietary needs/preferences and to schedule. At this time, the family is not seeing visitors. Those providing meals will make arrangements with the family to drop food off but will not be able to stay and visit. Thank you for understanding.

20th Anniversary February--President's Day Event On Monday, February 20, RAW hosted the eighth in our series of 20th Anniversary celebration events. Since the 20th of the month happened to fall on President's Day, what better opportunity was there to honor RAW's presidents? We invited all of RAW's past presidents and the membership to join us at Wise Guy's Pizza for happy hour. Kat Sparks raised a toast to all presidents, and to all of those in attendance were cheered: Ray Harris, Joe Luccioni, Kathryn
Gleghorn, and Chris Morris. Other presidents were unable to attend, but were celebrated as well: Richard Craft, Eileen Fontaine, Thomas Okazaki, and Kelly Richards. Four events remain in our yearlong 20th Anniversary celebration. We hope you will continue to join us on the 20th of every month through June 20, 2017!

RAW Trail Clean Up Day The annual RAW Horseshoe Trail Clean Up day was held on Saturday, February 11. Several members came out for the Saturday run and then stayed to clean up our trails and green areas around the route and lake shoreline. Thank you to all of the members that joined us! All together, 39 volunteers worked 68 hours and picked up 49 bags of garbage. Thank you to Gary Howsam for coordinating the clean up event.
Robin Pearson and her kids were just three of the volunteers picking up trash.
20th Anniversary RAWear Store If you missed the 20 th Anniversary RAWear pre-sale
back in November and December, here is how you can still get your hands on a shirt. The same shirts that were sold at the clubhouse are available online at lgraw.logosoftwear.com. There, you will also find sweats, hoodies, tanks, and other items you can order as designed, or customize to your liking. To customize any item, click on that item and then click "customize" in the size/ordering box on the right. You can move, re-size, change, or add logos, change the color, or pick a different product altogether from that screen. Before you order, make sure to check the top of the page for a banner with a coupon code that will reduce the cost of your selections a little more. This LogoSoftWear store will remain active until the end of the year-long 20 th Anniversary celebration. LGRAW receives no commissions or income of any kind from sales on this site.
Volunteers Make a Difference
Are you ready to take your club commitment to the next level? Engage more, meet new people, and make a difference in the running community by volunteering in one of many ways coming available now! FOOTPRINT Editor Our current FOOTPRINT editor's time in the position is coming to an end. We need a new editor or team of editors to take over for Anne Barnwell beginning in September 2017. Don't worry, you won't be dumped into a task for which you are not prepared. Anne will provide training over the summer, so you'll be ready to start in September. In addition, the editor position is backed up by an experienced team of proofreaders and contributors to make sure you don't have to do it all on your own. For more information, contact Anne at pr@lgraw.com. Nomination Committee The 2017 LGRAW Board election is coming up in July. Many positions will be open at that time. The nomination committee is tasked first and foremost with soliciting candidates who will serve on the board. Do you like to talk to people? If so, you're qualified for this committee! The committee will also coordinate posts for Facebook and the FOOTPRINT, update the application of interest and make it available to potential candidates, and eventually, create the ballot for the July 4 election. This committee's time involvement is approximately four months, mid-March through July 4. For more information, contact Monica at secretary@lgraw.com or Diane at vp@lgraw.com. RAW Board of Directors Do you have what it takes to be a leader at RAW? Don't worry, no resume is required, and you
don't have to take an oath, raise funds, or go through an initiation. All you have to do to qualify is be a member and to step up. Open positions this year include President, Assistant Treasurer, Secretary, and several directorships. Curious about what serving on the RAW board is like? Feel free to ask any current board member, or attend one of our upcoming meetings on the second Monday of each month. Interested in running for office? Watch Facebook and the FOOTPRINT for an application.
Team Maddie recognized in Texas Legislature
Team Maddie in the Texas Capital Have you seen the Team Maddie shirts on many of our RAW runners? Those shirts are more than just colorful tank tops. They are worn to bring awareness to the importance of organ donation registration. The Maddie referenced is the 14-year-old daughter of Jessica O'Neil Smith, a RAW member. Last summer, Maddie received a lifesaving double organ transplant. Now the entire family and many RAW members have become advocates for the organ donation registry in order to save the lives of countless other children and adults who are waiting for an organ. On Monday, February 13, Team Maddie was recognized in the Texas Capitol House of Representatives. Maddie was joined by her family on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives and recognized for their efforts to encourage people to register. If you haven't registered, please consider visiting the site today: https://www.donatelifetexas.org/register/ Learn more about Team Maddie by following her Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/ MadelineAveryFoundation/ If you are interested in spreading awareness by wearing a Team Maddie tank, let Jessica know through the Facebook page. She will be reordering them soon.
20 Fun & Fascinating Facts about RAW
By Kelly "K2" Richards 1. Now in its 19th year, every Grasslands Trail Run race director has been a RAW member. 2. Vintage RAWear shorts had the RAW logo on the back (right) so that when a RAW member was racing and passed someone, the other racer would know they were passed by someone from RAW. 3. Terry Marcott directed or co-directed Double Trouble six times including the inaugural race in 2000 when he co-directed with Tony Domenic; 2003 when the "double" represented a road and cross country combo course; the 10th running dubbed "A Decade of Double Trouble" in 2009 when he co-directed with K2; and as part of a committee in 2010. 4. For many years, the FOOTPRINT was assembled by hand, stapled, sorted and bundled by zip code and mailed from the Grapevine post office. For a few years, a group of 4-8 people would gather at Susan Barnett's home to complete this task. Those gatherings might have been called FOOTPRINT parties. 5. In 2002, 2003 and 2004, RAW held a race called Protectors of Freedom 5K. Joe Luccioni and Tony Dominiec were co-race directors for all three races. The race was held at the Texas Motor Speedway in 2002 and 2003. In 2004, it was held at the Gaylord Texan. 6. In 2005, Mark Miller was selected as the RRCA Southern Region Runner of the Year. After receiving that recognition, Mark was asked by K2 to consider giving back to the sport by writing a column for the FOOTPRINT. Many would agree that this was one of K2's best suggestions ever! For several years, Mark's "On Your Mark" column graced the FOOTPRINT with great insights, strategies, humor, and of course, humility. In 2010, Mark received national recognition for his writing skills when he was named the 2010 RRCA Club Writer of the Year. 7. Around the summer of 2006, the Trackies were formed. The Trackies were a group of RAW members who ran track on Tuesdays and hills on Thursdays. They trained hard and raced well. The Trackies traveled to races in large groups to Arizona, California, Louisiana and Colorado, to name just a few states. They played hard, too, organizing paintball fights, games of kickball, roller skating, and many post-run dinners - even having pizza delivered to the clubhouse regularly. 8. In 2008, 2009 and 2011, Fun Runs called "Trail Mixers" were held. The Trail Mixers were a low-key, no-pressure fun way to introduce "roadies" to the joys of trail running. Each run was followed by a unique awards ceremony - e.g. dark colored socks for whomever whined the most about their white socks getting dirty, a first aid kit for someone who fell, etc. and a potluck breakfast. Rick Sanford directed all three runs, K2 co-directed in 2008 and 2009. 9. On November 7, 2010, RAW held a "Finish before You Start" run. The run, a brainchild of Ray Harris, started at 1:59 AM. At 2:00 AM, the time changed from Daylight Savings to Standard time. So, the runners finished before they started. Chris Rehyer, John Bush, Joe Luccioni, Alan Engish, Mike Eccelston and Ray participated. 10. In 2010, the FOOTPRINT won a third national award when it was named the RRCA Outstanding E- Newsletter of the Year. Twice previously, the FOOTPRINT had won Outstanding Newsletter of the Year in the print category. 11. Current Assistant Treasurer, Belynda Warner, was recruited to join RAW after appearing in the January 2011 issue of Runner's World Magazine. (Watch for more on this in a future Twenty Fun and Fascinating Facts About RAW column.)
12. In May 2012, Grapevine Cross Fit offered six free introductory workout sessions to RAW members. Dozens joined in, and many still do cross fit regularly today. Click here for pictures from the first session. 13. In celebration of RAW's 15th anniversary, a well-attended Happy Hour was held at Red Dog Right (since closed). Almost all participants wore their special 15th anniversary shirt. and five RAW presidents, Richard Craft, Ray Harris, K2, Joe Luccioni and Kathryn Gleghorn were present. 14. In 2012, the city of Grapevine presented RAW with a plaque in recognition of the donated funds used to add a water fountain on Horseshoe Trails at the trail split near our first water stop. The plaque is at the clubhouse. 15. In 2013, past Race Directors Kathryn Gleghorn and K2 created a RAW Race Director's Manual. The manual has 38 chapters and covers every subject from setting a race date to determining number of porta-potties needed and to deciding what to do with any leftover supplies. 16. In 2013, Chris Barnwell became the first male member of RAW to complete The Grand Slam of Ultrarunning™, four 100-mile races in one summer. This was 10 years after Letha Cruthirds completed the Slam. Letha, known as "Lethal" in the running community, did the Slam to celebrate turning 50. Chris's slam is particularly impressive because Western States 100 Endurance Run, the first race of the series, was his first ever 100. RAW member Suzi Cope was the first woman (ever!) to complete the slam in 1989. (Watch for more information on Suzi in a future Twenty Fun and Fascinating Facts About RAW column.) 17. In October 2014, RAW had its first team participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer's benefiting the Alzheimer's Association - North Central Texas Chapter. Ray Harris was the Honorary Chairperson of the event. Christine Bassano was the RAW Team Captain. 18. In June 2015, OneFourteen Magazine featured the club in an article called Leaving Footprints on DFW written by Kathryn Gleghorn. 19. The second event of the yearlong 20 th anniversary was ROGA - a run followed by yoga at the clubhouse. The originally scheduled date was rained out, and the event was rescheduled for a few weeks later. 20. Luke's Locker in Colleyville (then later in Southlake after the store relocated) hosted several exclusive events for RAW members. The events included ladies night, board meetings, and social runs, all followed by discounted shopping. Luke's was also the site for Bold in the Cold and Double Trouble packet pick-up for several years. Luke's Southlake closed its doors on January 20, 2017.
RAW to the Races: Haltom Stampede
L to R: Frances Mckissick, Cathy Buchanan, Laura Nelson, Elizabeth Lawrence, Helene Walker, Mark Miller, Jeff "Barney" Barnhart, Greg Jesensky. By Helene "LN" Walker The last time I ran the Haltom Stampede was a decade ago when the race was located at the Birdsville Stadium about 2 miles away from the location of the current race, the Haltom Recreation Center. I had won a bison - they were white at the time - and I wanted to give him a companion, so I decided "Let's go race!" And I am glad I did as I saw many friendly faces from our running community. After parking, I got registered, chatted with some volunteers and other runners and met my run buds for an easy warm up. We then proceeded to the start. The announcer asked us all to sing "Happy Birthday" to the town mayor, and we complied, even if a little off-key. After thanking us for such a beautiful rendition, Mr. Mayor gave us the count down, blew the air horn and off we went! My run buds took off, as I knew they would, and I settled into my own pace. A young boy fell into step with me, and we ran side by side for a while, but we somehow got separated during the race. Mile two had a naughty surprise: a long, somewhat steep hill! It was 61 feet of elevation gain according to my Garmin. Now, if you know me, you know I truly hate hills. But I survived! I then had just one more mile to the finish! One last corner and there was the finish line. Yay! My RAW buds were already finished, of course, and we high-fived each other. Another race done! I really loved the course. It was more or less a rectangle and no weird zigzags slowing us down. But I guess that naughty hill made up for the lack of zigzags. There were many school kids racing that day, and many were quite fast despite their young ages. The overall winners were both 14: Martin Chavez with a time of 18:13 and Veronica Rios with a time of 22:16. The 9-year old boy who won the 1-mile ran the 5K too! It looks like the next generation of runners is assured. As a plus, all the RAW runners who raced the Stampede placed and were awarded bisons at the awards ceremony, making this race complete. My white bison now has a companion! Until the next race! RAW Winners Female Masters winner: Laura Nelson Male Grand Masters winner: Greg Jesensky First place age group winners: Elizabeth Lawrence, Mark Miller
Third place age group winners: Jeff "Barney" Barnhart, Chris Morris

Memorial Track Meet to Honor Track Coach
Logo by David Ball On March 1, 2017, the inaugural Sharonda Singleton Track Classic was held at Goose Creek High School in Charlotte, South Carolina. Coach Sharonda was one the nine shot and killed at her African American Emanuel AME Church in June of 2015. The State track meet was always Singleton's dream for Goose Creek High School.
