Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers January 2017 Dear Lake Grapevine This past month, RAW members have volunteered, celebrated, and made history. First, many of our RAW members danced into the night at our Annual RAW Holiday Party at the Lancaster Theatre in historic downtown Grapevine. One week later, a large group of our members also volunteered at another annual tradition, manning an aid station at the Dallas Marathon for the 20th year in a row (except of course the year the race was cancelled). Registration is going strong for LGRAW's Bold in The Cold 5K and 15K coming up on January 21, 2017! You can still register for this popular, wellrun race. If you are interested in volunteering, we can use your help. Please send an email to sakinayl@gmail.com, text 817.714.2757 or sign up at the RAW clubhouse. All volunteers will be given a special volunteer shirt. Our 20th anniversary celebration continues with another great event planned on January 20. More details are below. If you haven't joined us for a 20th Anniversary event yet, I encourage you to join us soon. Each month is a new and unique event and is part of our yearlong celebration. The LGRAW board sent a special announcement to all members two weeks ago, sharing that Chris Morris has resigned as the LGRAW President as of December 12, 2016. Our next board meeting is January 9, and at that time, the board will appoint the next president who will serve until the next election on July 4, 2017. On behalf of the Board, thank you to Chris for his hard work and dedication to our club. If you have any questions about the club's next steps, please attend the board meeting on January 9 or send your questions to me at VP@lgraw.com and your email will be shared with the board. All members are welcome to attend board meetings. I am proud to be part of RAW a unique club filled with people who are passionate about running and giving back to their community. When people ask what makes RAW different from other clubs, the answer is simple. It is our members. The following is an excerpt of an article I wrote for the October issue of Texas Runner and Triathlete, titled "Celebrating RAW's 20th Anniversary." "We may have come a long way from a 20 member club. Today we bear a unique logo, hold comical social events and fun runs, and participate in an AntiTurkey Trot each Thanksgiving. Our group offers runners and walkers beautiful, majestic lake views with trails alongside Lake Grapevine and a unique clubhouse to meet after runs to socialize and meet others. We are proud to state that our club has never increased membership dues over the years and proudly hosts two annual club races each year: Double Trouble 5K and 10K in October and Bold in the Cold 5K and 15K in January. With twenty years of memories to cherish, we look forward to making new ones and invite runners and walkers to join us." I look forward to this coming year, celebrating RAW's 20th year, and creating new and exciting memories with the members of RAW. Sincerely,

The goal was to do one pushup on January 1, two on January 2 adding another pushup every day of the year with 365 push ups scheduled for December 31. There was also a SitUp Challenge with the same rules. A dozen members completed one or both of the challenges completing 66,795 pushups and or situps in 2010. Several of those who completed the challenge did the last 25 pushups together in Fort Worth at the finish line of a race on New Year's Eve. Road Runners Club of America News By Kelly "K2" Richards, RRCA AtLarge Director Kids Run the Nation Grants Fortyseven youth running programs throughout the U.S., serving more than 28,000 children, received a total of $40,000 in grants from the RRCA. This amount signifies a 100% increase in funding for 2016 due to strong support from RRCA members clubs such as RAW, events, and sponsors, including FEETURES! In addition, the RRCA will donate copies of the Kids Run the Nation: A Running Guide for Kids booklet to be given to program participants in 18 different programs, an inkind donation valued at over $10,000. One of this year's awardees is Kids Run SARR in San Antonio, TX. Started as a summer program by San Antonio Road Runners member Gabriella Hernandez, Kids Run SARR plans to expand into a yearround program utilizing the Kids Run the Nation curriculum. USA Track & Field Election Vin Lananna, endorsed by the RRCA, was named president of USA Track & Field, the governing federation of the sport. Lananna won the election by acclamation after his only opponent, Olympian Jackie JoynerKersee, withdrew her bid for the position days before the election. RRCA Event Member BMW Dallas Marathon Expo Thank you to RAW members Tina Rust, Jack Hase and Chris Morris for joining RRCA Programs Coordinator Andy Smith and me in volunteering at the RRCA booth at the Dallas

Dallas Marathon Water Stop

Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped at the Dallas Marathon RAW Mile7 Aid Station! It was truly a team effort. Approximately 20,000 runners came through the aid station. Volunteers gave highfives, smiles, cheers of encouragement, a few hugs, some selfies, and tons of water and Gatorade. Perhaps the mostimpressive feat was the cleanup job! Handing out water is fun. Picking up tens of thousands of cups not so much! A special thanks to Joe Luccioni for being the aid station captain again this year!

Flashback: Ask Spareribs, Special Edition As part of the 20th Anniversary, we have reposted articles from past Footprints. This month however, we share a special edition from the infamous Spareribs. The "Ask Spareribs" column graced the back cover of the Footprint from January 2006 August 2011. Throughout the years, Ribs amused and even offended with his famous dry humor. Enjoy! Dear Spareribs: What time do runners have to show up on weekend mornings to get a parking space in the limited area across from the Clubhouse? Don't mean to sound like a wuss or anything, but often it's dark or I have stuff to carry. Would be nice to park across the street and not have to walk the quarter mile or so before the run. Many thanks. Lazy chick from Coppell

Dear Lazy: Funny you should ask about this just now, as our forwardthinking Board has just voted yes to a brand new initiative to improve parking near the Clubhouse due to our increasing membership and the demand for better parking. Without getting into too much detail, the general plan is to set fire to and level the entire wooded area across the street from the Clubhouse, extending all the way to the soccer fields. Once the woods are eliminated, which we believe we can achieve solely through volunteer effort from Club members (and a lot of gasoline!), the plan is for a modest expenditure from our accumulated treasury to completely pave the razed area with asphalt. I've been privy to the planners' drawings and I must say the new parking lot looks beautiful, overlaid with a lovely crushed sandcolored gravel to give it a breathtaking natural look and complemented with three trees from a local nursery to give it a "woodsy" feel. Of course no great idea comes to fruition without volunteer support from the membership so we're planning an "allcall" help request from members to volunteer, especially those who have chainsaws, pickup trucks for tree and stump removal and of course shotguns to put a merciful end to fleeing wildlife. The Board has also planned a neighborhood initiative in which members will distribute flyers to the doorsteps of homeowners who live near the existing woods, outlining the benefits of the new lot and asking for their support, similar to the way the Gaylord was able to gain the trust and confidence of those whose homes abutted their new property. I'm sure the surrounding neighbors will be really energized once they learn of our improvements! Plans are being discussed right now to unveil the new lot with a big RAW picnic, to which the local community will be invited to celebrate with us. Hope to see you there, and happy parking! A History of Lake Grapevine By Beth Brueggen The Lake Grapevine dam is one of five dams (along with Benbrook, Garza [Lake Lewisville], Lavon, and Ray Roberts) that was constructed to minimize flooding along the Trinity river, particularly in downtown Dallas. It is managed and maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Work began on the earthfill dam in 1948, and the lake began filling in July 1952. The creek elevation at the base of the dam was 451 ft above sea level at the time of construction. The maintenance level of the lake (i.e., the water level above which the Corps may release water, contingent on downstream conditions) is 535 ft, the spillway is at 560 ft, and the top of the dam is at 588 ft. In addition to flood control, the City of Grapevine uses water from the lake to supplement water purchased from the Trinity River Authority. The City of Dallas and the Dallas County Park Cities also own water rights for the lake. The record low lake level of 520.67 ft was recorded on February 23, 1979. The record high lake level of 563.29 ft was recorded on November 1, 1981. Since the inception of LGRAW, twelve flood events have closed off portions of the west course for a total of 825 days. In 2007, the course was closed for 106 days with a peak water level of 555.13 ft. As a result, a 10k race held to recognize the 10th anniversary of the club had to be relocated. Until the 2015 flooding, the highwater mark from this flooding was visible on trees along Horseshoe Trail. In the last 3 years, we have seen both nearrecord low and nearrecord high lake levels. The Lake reached a low of 522.31 ft on December 31, 2014 before beginning a slow, and then

rapid, filling. It peaked on June 19, 2015, at 562.91 ft (2.9 ft above the spillway). Water flowed over the spillway continuously from May 30 to July 3, and then again from July 7 to 9. The lake was let down to maintenance levels by October 2015, but a second period of flooding began in November 2015, which led to the cancellation of the 2016 Bold in the Cold. Typically, lake levels increased 1 to 2 feet per day, although on November 27, 2015, the lake level increased over 5 feet. At its minimum in 2014, the lake impounded approximately 92,000 acrefeet of water, and it extended over approximately 4,900 acres. At its maximum in 2015, the lake impounded approximately 444,000 acrefeet of water, and it extended over approximately 13,500 acres, including a portion of Dove Road. At the maintenance level, the lake impounds approximately 163,000 acrefeet of water, and it extends over approximately 6,500 acres. Since May 8, 2015, the lake level has been below 535 ft only 22 days. It has been above 538 ftthe approximate level of the first flooding on the west course, just past the second water stopa total of 357 days. While under normal conditions, the RAW west course is absolutely fixed and not to be modified for any reasonincluding snakes, pretty yards, or inspection of free furniture left by the curbthe flood course, big flood course, and really big flood course were subject to interpretation and daily modifications to check out new scenery.
