Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers May 2017 Dear RAW members participated in several exciting and inspiring races this Easter month! The Run 4 Elise 5K and 1-mile Fun Run on April 8 raised over $60,000 to fund a scholarship in honor of Elise Cerami. Many RAW members turned out to support this meaningful cause. April 16 marked the 121st running of the Boston Marathon, and RAW was well represented! Members who made the trip include Ray Taylor, David Ball, Lorelai Cole, Anne and Chris Barnwell, Jack Hase, Jay Jones, Russ Wedemeyer and Jeff Bozarth. It was a first Boston Marathon for Chris Barnwell and Jeff Bozarth. If you ran Boston and your name wasn't listed, please accept my apologies for the oversight. On April 23, RAW members ran the Heels and Hills and Him 5K/10K/15K in Keller. On April 29, several RAW members participated in the Rachel's Challenge 5K in Colleyville, held in memory of a Columbine School shooting victim. The race's purpose is to challenge and encourage people to start "a chain reaction" of kindness and compassion. Many RAW members had great reviews to discuss after viewing "Boston: The Documentary" (the first ever feature-length documentary film about the world's most legendary running race - the Boston Marathon) on April 19 at the Cinemark Tinseltown in Grapevine. This month's 20th Anniversary celebration had an Earth Day theme, as members built and set planters and birdhouses to enhance our connection with nature. The two-day project concluded on Saturday, April 22 with a potluck breakfast, and with members planting flowers in the new planters. We invite you to walk behind the LGRAW clubhouse and enjoy our beautiful pergola! See the 20th Anniversary April Celebration article for details and pictures of the event. Come out and join us at the Cowboys Golf Club on May 20 for RAW's 20th Anniversary Gala. This will be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate friendships, to honor our history, and to look forward to our future. Buy your tickets soon, all sales close on May 9! Gala details can be found in the Footprint. This month we are accepting Best Foot Forward nominations. Please take the time to consider any member who has made significant contributions to our club through outstanding volunteer work, inspiring leadership and/or encouragement and mentoring of others, and nominate them for our Best Foot Forward Award. The Best Foot Forward Award will be presented on July 4 at our annual club meeting and family picnic. We also have volunteer opportunities to serve on the LGRAW board. See the Best Foot Forward section, and Volunteer Opportunities article. Take a break and ask friends and colleagues to join us for our monthly 5K social run on May 16 at the Grapevine Craft Brewery. We invite everyone, including family and friends, to join us for our weekend runs at 7 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday. Our water stops are recognized throughout the Grapevine community as great places to chat and get to know others! Look forward to seeing you on the trails! Diane Hernandez VP and Acting President

20th Anniversary Banquet

Since June 2016, RAW has celebrated our 20-year anniversary on the 20th of each month. On May 20, 2017, we will host the premiere event of the year, a special night celebrating friendships, honoring our history, and looking forward to the club's future. Saturday, May 20, 2017, 6-10pm Cowboys Golf Club 1600 Fairway Drive, Grapevine, TX 76051 Tickets include: Happy Hour with hors d'oeuvres from 6-7pm. Buffet dinner including beef, chicken, potatoes, vegetables, salad, bread, and dessert. Vegetarian and gluten-free plates are available and must be indicated at time of ticket purchase. Champagne toast. One drink ticket for house beer, wine, spirit, or soda. (Tea, coffee, and water will be included with your meal.) Cash bar and wine by the bottle also available. Special guest speaker Alexi Pappas, Greek Olympian and national record holder, writer, and film maker, will share her story. Alexi is also the co-writer, co-director and star of "Tracktown," a new running movie now getting great reviews. Read about the movie! RAW members will have the opportunity to look back and share how the club has impacted their lives as well. This is an adults-only event. Tickets are $35 per person for past and present RAW members. Members may purchase one additional $35 ticket for their guest. Tickets for nonmembers are available for $55 per person. All ticket sales will end on May 9. Members have inquired as to the appropriate level of dress for our Anniversary Gala. The short answer is ... wear whatever you like. We have it on good authority, though, that some people do plan on dressing up. Nice casual (whatever THAT means!) is perfectly fine, but you won't look or feel out of place if you decide to class up the joint with a touch of elegance ... or to rock the house with your scintillating sartorial statement! For the gentlemen: better than a speedo ... not quite a tuxedo (unless you're feeling particularly James Bond-ish!). Purchase Tickets Here

Graduating Seniors Each June, we highlight the sons and daughters of members (or members themselves) who are graduating from high school or college. If you have someone whom you would like to include, please send a photo, name, school, and brief outline of future plans to pr@lgraw.com. Please provide us your information no later than May 22, 2017.

Volunteers Make a Difference

Are you ready to take your club commitment to the next level? Engage more, meet new people, and make a difference in the running community by volunteering in one of many ways coming available now! Race Directors Runners appreciate a well-organized race, but these events are only made possible through the dedication of many volunteers: people whose efforts are coordinated and led by an amazing race director. We are recruiting volunteers who have an interest in being a race director for one of RAW's two annual races: the October 2017 Double Trouble, and the January 2018 Bold in the Cold. As a race director, you are responsible for creating a race budget, choosing giveaways and prizes, enlisting sponsors, administering race sign-ups, and promoting the race. You may delegate many of these tasks to others, but you are ultimately responsible for the execution of the race. Our RAWsome volunteers are also a great asset in making sure things go according to plan. If you're interested in learning more, contact Diane at vp@lgraw.com. If you've never directed a race before, or if you're new to RAW races, you won't have to re-invent the wheel. We'll connect you with one of our many experienced race directors. We also have a RAW-specific race directing manual. Nomination Committee The 2017 LGRAW Board election is coming up in July. Many positions will be open at that time. The nomination committee is tasked first and foremost with soliciting candidates who will serve on the board. Do you like to talk to people? If so, you're qualified for this committee! The committee will also coordinate posts for Facebook and the FOOTPRINT, update the application of interest and make it available to potential candidates, and eventually, create the ballot for the July 4 election. This committee's time involvement is approximately four months, mid-March through July 4. For more information, contact Monica at secretary@lgraw.com or Diane at vp@lgraw.com. RAW Board of Directors Do you have what it takes to be a leader at RAW? Don't worry, no resume is required, and you won't have to take an oath, raise funds, or go through an initiation. All you have to do to qualify is be a member and to step up. Open positions this year include President, Assistant Treasurer, Secretary, and several directorships. Curious about what serving on the RAW board is like? Feel free to ask any current board member, or attend one of our upcoming meetings on the second Monday of each month. RAW Goes to Boston By Anne Barnwell As runners, we are accustomed to our sport being a peripheral sport for most people. People cheer for football players, trade baseball cards, and watch ESPN for basketball. However, the average American spends very little time watching running events other than the sprinting races at the Olympics. Members of RAW are different. We follow the top marathoners on social media. We cheered, and even cried, when Meb won the Boston Marathon in 2014. We pull a large screen TV to the

clubhouse to watch the Olympic marathon. Yes, we are different from most Americans. Traveling to Boston for the marathon shows a different side of sports in our country. From the moment you step on a plane that points to Boston, you see other runnersBoston jackets, shirts from premiere races, old running shoes, and Garmin watches worn casually. Sit quietly and you will hear conversations about pace, time qualifications, races run, goals met, and goals still to conquer. Strangers wish you luck, knowing why you are there. Even more exciting is the response from Bostonians themselves. Everyone in the city is excited for the marathon. They might not know the qualifying times or the runners who are expected to win, but they are proud that their city is hosting this prestigious event. They care about the sport, and the athletes, even if only for the long weekend.

David Ball after the race - David penned "MARCOTT" on his right leg to honor his mentor and friend Several members of RAW ran Boston Marathon this year - some for their first time and some returning. The forecast predicted the weather to be in the low 60s, but the day brought much warmer conditions. Weather hit mid 70s and only dropped after most of our runners were done. RAW runners finished strong despite the high temperatures and some injuries. Congratulations to the following RAW members for qualifying for, and completing, this year's Boston Marathon: Steve Anderson 3:59:31 David Ball 3:54:32 Chris Barnwell 3:58:30 Jeff Bozarth 3:25:05 Lorelai Cole 3:45:10 Jack Hase 4:05:43 Jay Jones 3:24:55 BQ Dirk Reader 4:44:08 Jeriann Severson 4:12:58 Ray Taylor 3:30:44 Russ Wedemeyer 4:16:55

On April 19, about two dozen RAW members celebrated the spirit and rich history of the Boston Marathon by watching a one-night-only showing of "Boston: The Documentary" at the Grapevine Cinemark Tinseltown. Following the tragic events of 2013, the documentary records the preparations and eventual running of the 118th Boston Marathon one year later, when runners and community gather once again in support of one another for what will be the most meaningful race of all. The movie was an enjoyable and inspirational experience for everyone who attended ... the next best thing to joining our RAW friends in Boston!

Best Foot Forward Nominations The Best Foot Forward Award is regarded as RAW's highest honor bestowed on a member. The Best Foot Forward recipient is celebrated as the person who best exhibits the "Spirit of RAW." Past recipients have been recognized for consistently demonstrating leadership, volunteering both

publicly and behind the scenes, encouraging and mentoring others, and serving as positive ambassadors for our club. Nominations for the Best Foot Forward award are being accepted until June 1. Click HERE for the nomination form. The nomination form lists criteria as well as names of all past recipients. Current board members are not eligible, and previous winners are not eligible until two years have passed from the year for which David and Bridget Smith, 2016 Best Foot they were last awarded the Best Foot Forward Honorees, flanked by Belynda Warner Forward. The Best Foot Forward will be awarded on July 4 at the RAW Annual Meeting and family picnic.

Run 4 Elise

Inaugural Run4Elise By Dr. Marybeth Crane The inaugural Run4Elise 5K and 1-mile Fun Run was held on April 8, 2017, at Dragon Stadium. It was an amazing, heart-warming community event with more than 40 sponsors and 950+ runners and walkers. The turnout was spectacular, and the best part was that people brought their whole families to participate. Times were relatively irrelevant, (unless you were my daughter Caitlin, who won her age group ha ha). Speaking of awesome athletic accomplishments, my mother Elizabeth Crane completed her very first 5K ... at the age of 76!

Elise Cerami and her mother Lori working a water stop at Bold in the Cold

Run4Elise was a time for the community to come together and celebrate the life of Elise who was taken from us at such a young age. The LGRAW family was out in force, and your support was greatly appreciated.

The event had a two-fold purpose: to raise money for the Swim4Elise memorial scholarship fund and to raise awareness that none of us are drown-proof. As many of you already know, Elise Cerami, a 13-year-old champion swimmer and the daughter of long-time LGRAW member, Lori Cerami, tragically drowned in the Carroll ISD pool on June 20, 2016. Her memorial scholarship fund awarded five college scholarships for high school seniors and five swim camp scholarships for 8 th graders at the race. Olympic gold medalist Katie Meili, a Colleyville native, presented the scholarships. Elise had a zest for life and wanted everyone to believe in him or herself. Her light in the world will never be extinguished, as long as we continue to uphold her legacy with the Swim4Elise Foundation. Her poem, "Believe in Yourself," written at the age of 9, can be read at www.swim4elise.com, and donations to the scholarship fund are still being accepted. The run raised over $60,000 for the scholarship fund and we hope to make this an annual event.

Lori Cerami, Katie Meili and Marybeth Crane Three Generations! Marybeth Crane with mother Betty and daughter Caitlin

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for helping to make this race such a success! Elise was an integral member of my family, and we miss her everyday. The outpouring of community support really helps all of us slowly heal and makes us realize that, even in our darkest moments, our running community is here for all of us. Thank you all for your support.

Save The Date! The final installment of RAW's yearlong 20th Anniversary Celebration is Tuesday, June 20. The date coincides with our regular Third Tuesday of the Month Social Run, but the special event following our run/walk (or you can make a purely social appearance!) will be anything but "regular!" Join us for an evening of fun, camaraderie and treats! The Grapevine Craft Brewery's outside seating area is kid (and dog!) friendly, so bring along the whole crew! For further details, keep an eye on the LGRAW Facebook page, our website, and the June Footprint.

20 Fun & Fascinating Facts about RAW By Kelly "K2" Richards 1. On 8/8/98, RAW put on an 8-mile race benefiting GRACE. 2. To the best of our knowledge, the fastest marathon time run by a male and female RAW member is 2:36 by Terry Marcott (Chicago 1994) and 2:46 by Colleen Casey (St. George 2007). 3. The 20 th Anniversary Gala will be the fifth banquet the club has held. The other banquets were in the spring of 2000, 2001, 2006 and 2007. 4. In 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006, RAW had large teams participate in 24 hour Relay for Life walks. This relay is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. 5. El Scorcho 50K and 25K debuted in July 2007. The race started at midnight Saturday night/Sunday morning and was run on a 5K loop course in Fort Worth. It was held annually through July 2016. RAW was represented by several racers each year, often accompanied by a large contingent of spectators. 6. In 2007 and 2008 (or there about) RAW conducted a Bloody Mary Sunday challenge. The idea originated after reading an article in Runner's World magazine claiming that a Bloody Mary is the "best" alcoholic drink to imbibe after running. Because we're a competitive bunch, there was a contest to see who made the best Bloody Mary. 7. For approximately the past 10 years, the clubhouse has maintained a small library. All books have been donated by members and are available to be checked out at any time. 8. From 2007 to 2016, members of RAW were on RRCA National Award Selection Committees. 9. In 2008, RAW's Hound Dog Hustle won the Gold Award for Best Entry form from Runner Triathlete News (now Texas Runner and Triathlete). For you youngsters and racing newbies, back in the day, you registered for a race by filling out a form and snail-mailing it in along with a check. 10. Since sometime around 2010, the RRCA's "Join a club" campaign materials have featured a picture of RAW members taken at the 2008 RRCA Texas Running Clubs Challenge, held at the Mayor's Race 5K in Dallas. 11. The RAW Trackies held track meets in May and October 2010, and then again in May 2012. Each meet was held at the Grapevine Middle School track. 12. RAW manned an aid station at the Dallas Athlete's Wounded Warrior Half Marathon & 10K each year from 2010-2015.

13. On May 22, 2011, RAW hosted our largest event to date, the Weight Watchers Walk !T 5K. RAW was one of 50 RRCA clubs nationwide to hold an event. RAW's event was the second largest in the country with 1,200 participants. Kathryn Gleghorn was the event director. NOTE: Three years after losing 100 pounds and being featured in the January 2011 Runner's World magazine, current Assistant Treasurer Belynda Warner was recruited to join RAW. It turned out Belynda was already a member, silently chipping in for Gatorade, but not active with the club. She quickly got involved with RAW's Weight Watchers Walk !T 5K and has been a key member ever since. 14. In 2011, RAW sponsored the Coppell Nature Center's Deck the Trails 5K. 15. The second annual Volunteer Appreciation event, held on April 2, 2013 at Trawick Pavilion, included an age-graded fun run, pizza, and even more and bigger prizes than the Inaugural Volunteer Appreciation event. 16. The RRCA has used multiple designs created by RAW member David Ball for their program logos, including the 2000-Hours Outstanding Volunteer program, Championship Race Series and Runner-Friendly Community Logo. 17. Every RAW president has also been a race director for a RAW race. 18. Past FOOTPRINT feature columns included a "RAW Student Spotlight" and "In Step With..." both columns were designed to get to know members through Q & A articles. 19. On November 20, 2016, the 20 th Anniversary Celebration event was a Main Street Wine Crawl. Approximately 50 people participated. 20. Mark Lehrmann and I are the first and only (known) RAW members to run a marathon or farther in all 50 U.S. states and Washington D.C. Mark had a goal to run 50 by 50 - 50 states before turning 50, which he accomplished by completing his 50th state in the fall of 2015. In March 2017, he added Washington D.C. to the list. I completed the states and D.C. in the fall of 2016. A handful of members are currently working their way through the states, and some should begin completing their own lists in 2018.

Water Duty Volunteers

Waterboy Reporter Our incoming newsletter editor has assigned me to make some waves in this traditional Footprint segment by incorporating topical interviews with RAW members who volunteer. My first subject insisted on anonymity, so he (or she) will be identified only as Hydration Facilitator (HF). HF: I remember my first time volunteering for water duty like it was yesterday. Waterboy Reporter: When was that? HF: Yesterday. WR: You've been a RAW member for about 18 months. By now, almost everyone has seen the gross manner in which you frequently wring rivers of sweat from your fashionable headband (well, it may have been fashionable in 1977!).

Photograph of HF taken by WR or, possibly, vice versa. Editor's Note: replace with a less hideous photo prior to publication, and then delete my note!

HF: Perspiration scientists have studied me for decades, baffled at how someone who runs so slowly could possibly sweat so much! WR: As a Dehydrated-American, and over the course of many weekend runs, you've obviously taken full advantage of those thirst-quenching containers of water and Gatorade. What kept you

from volunteering for water duty earlier? HF: I was under the impression that magical mermaids and mermen swam life-enhancing liquids from Lake Grapevine's enchanted depths, out to those two west-loop oasis. Oases? Oasii? Anyway, last month I accidentally paid attention once during 7 a.m. announcements, discovering that RAW members were signing up to arrive at the clubhouse early ... preparing the containers, driving the containers out to the water stops, and then picking the containers up again a few hours later. Crazy, amiright?! But I knew I had to become a part of that world! WR: Were you required to participate in official RAW Water Duty training sessions? Did you receive your Orange Jug Certification (OJC)? HF: I was mentored by a living legend in this YouTube Video. There have been a few minor changes over the five years since this epic was produced (pro tip: don't tear up the clubhouse looking for sports drink powder, the club uses a liquid concentrate now!), but success is guaranteed if you walk in the wisdom of those procedures ... and if you follow the instructions in this document (which is also posted on the clubhouse refrigerator). WR: Anything else you'd like tell our RAW readership? HF: Continue reading past this interview to join in celebrating April's water duty volunteers. Consider becoming a member of the elite RAW water duty team. And check back in this box next month, when your intrepid Waterboy Reporter will interview a RAW water duty volunteer who's guaranteed to be much more interesting than yours truly. WR: I couldn't have said it better myself! Thank you to the volunteers who have set water and Gatorade out on the course EVERY Saturday and Sunday! Without your kindness, there would be a LOT of thirsty runners and walkers on the course. Many thanks to everyone who volunteered for Water Duty in April including Ken Merte, Kelly "K2" Richards, Wilson Goode, Will Tien, Ritesh Kapil, Michelle and Brad Liles, Imelda Douglas, Jesse Saenz, Jon "Polar Bear" Korte, Gordon Kippola, Kirsten Bush-Mast (2 times), John Bush, and Jenna Wooley. The LGRAW board of directors recognizes and appreciates the effort made to get water and Gatorade out for our runners and walkers. There are plenty of slots open for this quarter. Be sure to sign up before they're all taken!

20th Anniversary April Celebration By Belynda Warner The tenth event in our yearlong 20th Anniversary celebration, our Earth Day Project, took place on April 20 and April 22. The two-part project started Thursday night, with a group of handy members coming together to install planters, birdhouses, and a bat house around the pergola behind the clubhouse. The planters had been designed and built by members Jay Jones, Kat Sparks and Russ Wedemeyer. The birdhouses and bat house were pre-assembled by member Dave Aungst.

Project leader Kat Sparks with planter builder Jay Jones

Following the instructions of Kat and Jay, other RAW members partially disassembled the planters, installed them around the pergola posts, and then reassembled them, adding support beams and protective aluminum panels. Members also filled the planters with soil in preparation for Earth Day planting. Meanwhile, Dave installed the birdhouses and bat house with the help of members holding his ladder and "approving" placement and alignment on each pergola post.

Thursday evening RAW installation crew Following the Saturday morning club run, members celebrated Earth Day by completing the project. Plants had been carefully and thoughtfully selected by Kat Sparks and Liz Wedemeyer. Again under Kat's direction, members planted rosemary, mint, and various flowers into the planters, added more soil, and watered the plants. Members also enjoyed a casual potluck breakfast and hot coffee on the surprisingly chilly morning.

Saturday morning RAW planting platoon While all the 20th Anniversary events have all been fun opportunities to socialize and get to know members both new and old, committee members felt it was important to include one service project that would leave a lasting impression. The committee was pleased to see some of our

younger and older members come together on Earth Day to give back in a way that members can enjoy on an ongoing basis. In all, more than 30 RAW members took part in the installation, planting, or both. If you missed out, make sure to take a look out back the next time you visit the clubhouse, and if the plants look thirsty, feel free to give them a drink!
