Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers April 2016 Dear Lake Grapevine The RAW volunteers were out in full force this month! The parking crew helped out at the Shannon Brewery 5K, and our club staffed its usual aid station at the Grasslands Trail Run. To thank those folks and everyone else who has volunteered in the past year or so, we will be holding our Volunteer Appreciation Social Run on Thursday, April 28 at 6 p.m. at the clubhouse. More details will be forthcoming. We will definitely have food, drinks, and prize drawings for everyone who has donated their time to give back to the sport. Thank you for your contributions! Having the RRCA National Convention in Dallas this year made for a great opportunity for us to learn more about leading running clubs and organizing races. Jack Hase, Kelly "K2" Richards, and I attended the conference and learned about topics like club governance, building diversity in a club, event cancellation (which we hopefully won't have to do again for a long time), developing club training programs, social media and even insurance. It was a lot of information to take in over two days, and all of the attendees and facilitators were extremely friendly and helpful. LGRAW members Sandie Nathan, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Kathryn Gleghorn attended the RRCA Coaching Certification at the conference. They were able to attend some of the convention keynote events during the conference and were otherwise kept very busy for the entire three days. Thank you for working so hard to earn the certification to help LGRAW coach runners in the future! If you have been thinking about joining LGRAW's board of directors in July, please feel free to join us at the Monthly Board Meeting on Monday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at the clubhouse. Members are always welcome to attend, and it's a great way to learn about what we do. For any questions, please contact me or any other board member. See you at the lake! Chris Morris LGRAW President Please note that your LGRAW membership expires on LGRAW
New Membership Policy We're making the LGRAW membership renewal process easier. Starting in 2017, all memberships will expire on January 31. If your membership renewal is between January and April, you will be charged the full membership price in 2016 ($20 individual or $30 family), and the membership will expire on January 31, 2017. Those who renew May through October will be charged half price ($10 individual or $15 family), and membership will also expire on January 31, 2017. Memberships that renew in November or December will be charged for a full year, but membership won't expire until January 31, 2018. We will also transition the process for new LGRAW members. Those who join the club January through June will pay the full membership price and then renew in January of the next year. Anyone who joins in July through December will pay the full price and be paid until January of the following year. For example, a new membership initiated in May 2016 will expire in January 2017, and a new membership initiated in October 2016 will expire in January 2018. We will do our best to avoid confusion during this transition by communicating the change as memberships expire. Please watch your email and submit any questions to membership@lgraw.com.
LGRAW Board Meeting Don't forget to check out the April LGRAW Board Meeting! The meeting will take place on Monday, April 11, 7 p.m. at the Clubhouse. All members are welcome to attend. Do you have an agenda item you would like to add? Email the board secretary by Thursday, April 7. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1123979131773&format=html&print=true

Water Duty Volunteers Thank you to the volunteers who have set water and Gatorade out on the course EVERY Saturday and Sunday! Without your kindness, there would be a LOT of thirsty runners and walkers on the course. Many thanks to everyone that volunteered for Water Duty in March: Dubravko and Sakina Vidacak, Michelle "Drum" Blackard, Jeff Nicodemus, Imelda Douglas, Steve Olson, Debbie Yatko, Randy Wolf, Stacie Sauber, David DeFanti and John Studebaker. The LGRAW board of directors recognizes and appreciates the effort made to get water and Gatorade out for our runners and walkers. As an extra incentive to volunteer for water duty, everyone who volunteers for Water Duty will be put in a quarterly drawing for a $50 Gift Card! There are plenty of slots open for this quarter. Be sure to sign up!
Trail Clean Up Day The next Trail CleanUp Day is set for Saturday, April 2, from 9 a.m. noon, or immediately following the morning social run. Please consider giving back to the community by helping us pick up trash along the trail. This is especially important with all of the rain and flooding that has occurred in the area. Wear your purple RAW Volunteer shirt, over top of a long sleeve shirt, long pants, sturdy shoes and gloves. Receive your area assignment and pickup supplies at the clubhouse. Please document how much garbage you collect on the signin/out sheet, also at the clubhouse. Any time you can dedicate is appreciated.
Volunteer Appreciation Social Run
All RAW Volunteers The annual Volunteer Appreciation Social Run will be held on Thursday, April 28 at the clubhouse. Food and drinks will be served; numerous raffle prizes for volunteers will be given. More details to come soon with a special fun race theme and more.
Third Tuesday Social Run Third Tuesday of the Month Social Run at Grapevine Craft Brewery LGRAW will hold the next installment of our 5K social run/walk starting and ending at Grapevine Craft Brewery at 6 PM on Tuesday, April 19. Follow the event on Facebook and invite your friends. If you prefer a longer distance, two miles can easily be added to the route. Or cut it short, if you want to get to the "Social" part quicker. The event is open to everyone you do not have to be a member of LGRAW, so bring your friends! Relax in the taproom or beer garden after the run.
Shoe Rep at RAW The Mizuno shoe rep will be at LGRAW on Saturday, April 2. Try on a pair of Mizuno shoes, take them for a test run, and get your name put in the hat for a cool raffle prize. See you then!

Road Runners Club of America News 58th Annual Road Runners Club of America Convention was RAWesome! By Kelly "K2" Richards, RRCA AtLarge Director Hundreds of runners, a bunch of Texans, a handful of RAW members, a few celebrities and an Olympic Gold Medalist were the right mix for a good time at the Dallas Running Club hosted RRCA Convention March 1720. Before I go any further with the convention, allow me to elaborate on the relationship between RAW, North Texas and the RRCA. Many people associate the RRCA as an insurance provider. Others have no idea who the RRCA is, what the organization does or who is a part of it. Simply put, the RRCA is in the business of building the national running community. There is the National Awards Program. Members of RAW including Gary Howsam, Mark Miller and Kevin and Lorraine Wessels have won Marcus Grunewald wears lots of hats! various awards. There is the 2000 Hours Outstanding Executive Director of Dallas Marathon DRC Board of Director Volunteer Recognition Program. Ray Harris, Jack Hase RRCA North Texas State Rep and David Ball are a few of the RAW recipients of this RRCA Convention Director recognition. There is the national board of directors which I have served on since 2009, and former RAW member and past Treasurer Craig Minyard was elected effective April 1, 2016.
Convention schwag from Leslie Jordan, Ashworth Awards and Feetures!
There is the Kids Run the Nation Grant Fund which RAW donates to, and at least one Texas youth program has received a grant from it annually. There is the State Representatives Program. RAW member Kathryn Gleghorn and I have both volunteered for this position. Marcus Grunewald, Dallas Marathon Executive Director currently serves in this role. The community includes North Texas Striders, North Texas Trail Runners, Dallas Marathon and RAW just to name a few local clubs and events. RAW has a strong relationship with each of these organizations. We run and volunteer at each other's races. We work together to build better communities. The RRCA unifies the running community. For that reason, the annual national convention is the ultimate unification of runners, running leaders, coaches and volunteers.
At the convention, everyday runners with a heart for leadership, volunteerism, race directing and coaching come together to learn about governance, managing a club or event, to become certified as coaches, and to have fun. Through RAW's leadership and coaching scholarship programs, five members attended the convention and certified coaching cohort. Convention attendees went to educational sessions on governance, increasing diversity in clubs and events, event cancellation, social media best practices and more. Coaching cohort attendees joined the https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1123979131773&format=html&print=true

convention attendees for the general sessions such as the Insurance Program and Managing Risks for Clubs & Events and all social functions. Social activities included morning fun runs and yoga. Participants received sweat shirts and Dallasthemed medals. Friday's luncheon speaker, Ben Rosario, shared an enthusiastic message of how running changes lives, and that as runners we're in the business of inspiring people. Saturday's speaker, Gilbert Tuhaboyne, told his incredible story of survival and how running transformed him; allowing him to forgive those who tried to murder him and to live joyfully. The premier Texas dinner experience was at Eddie Deen's Ranch.

LGRAW at Grasslands Blue skies, cool temperatures, and fast trails awaited runners this year at the Grasslands Trail Run, held in the LBJ National Grasslands near Decatur, TX on March 19. LGRAW members returned once again to volunteer and race. As always, a group of dedicated volunteers, led by Joe Luccioni, took charge of the Outback Aid Station, helping runners of the 50mile, marathon, and half marathon. In addition to hosting the aid station, LGRAW members marked the course the day before, helped at packet pick up, the finish line, and cleaned up the trails the day after the race.
Joe Luccioni gives a warm Texas welcome to runners from Minnesota and Wisconsin
Several LGRAW members raced and placed at the run as well. Leana Sloan finished as 3rd place female with a time of 1:59:58 in the half marathon. John Winstead won in the half marathon men's masters category with at time of 1:36:31. Other members ran their first trail race and loved it.
In addition to all of the LGRAW volunteers and runners, the new Grasslands logo and shirt was designed by LGRAW member, David Ball. The race is directed by Chris Barnwell, another LGRAW member. Thank you to all of the members of LGRAW who have continued to support the Grasslands Trail Run for many years. Your support is greatly appreciated!
Shannon Brewery 5K
Members of LGRAW were once again out in full force to run or volunteer in the Shannon Brewery 5K. Everyone had a great time, and several of our members came home with prizes too. Laura Nelson was the overall first place female finisher with a time of 21:29. John Winstead won the men's Grand Master category and placed 12th overall with a time of 20:47. Both Mike and Christine Bassano placed in their age groups and even did it by running together for much of the race. Evelyn Luccioni, Mary Keeffe, and Michelle Liles all placed in their age groups.

Four Legged Training Friends For years, LGRAW hosted the Hound Dog Hustle each spring, allowing participants to run with their canine friends. Chance, the dog of Ray and Susan Harris, won the Hound Dog Hustle two years and is the course record holder. In the photo to the right, you see Matt Loewen, Kat Spark's son, running with Chance in 2006. Although we no longer hold the Hound Dog Hustle 5K event, many of our members still depend on the company of their fourlegged friends for running, walking, and more. In the past couple weeks, we have lost two of our canine members that were active participants in our races and weekly social runs. The first was Chance who just passed away at the age of 14. The second canine runner that we lost was Sheldon, one of the dogs that Steven "Dog Dude" Rush would run with at the club. "Dog Dude" used to run with three dogs, including Sheldon, along the RAW course for many years. He eventually joined the club and continued to run with our members, and his dogs. Eventually his dogs could no longer keep up with the runner but still continued to visit the club and take walks with Steve or his wife Sharon. We recognize that these special canine companions were well loved by many of our members and will be dearly missed. We offer our condolences to their families.
