Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers August 2016 Dear Lake Grapevine We had a wellattended kickoff for our RAW 20th Anniversary celebration at Wilhoites, and that is only the first of the series of events to take place on the 20th of each month through June 2017. RAW's founder, Richard Craft, even came out and shared stories of the club's early years. Come join us for all of the fun events that are planned. Registrations for our Double Trouble 5K & 10K are off to a great start. Stan Pollard, the race director, is doing an excellent job of leading the charge. Mark the date of Saturday, October 22 on your calendar to volunteer, run, or both. Our races are the best in the Metroplex because we have the most RAWsome volunteers to help us out every time. You'll also find lots of other "Off to the Races" events below. They are a great opportunity to race with your RAW friends. Along with a selection of races throughout DFW, there's the Palo Duro Trail Run 50 Mile, 50K, and 20K near Amarillo on Saturday, October 15. Registration for the 20K opens today (August 1), so don't delay, if you would like to run that distance, as the 300 slots will fill up quickly. In case that's not far enough to travel, you can join a group of us at the IMT Des Moines Marathon in Iowa on Sunday, October 16, where Kelly "K2" Richards will complete her quest to run a marathon in all 50 states. There will also be half marathon and 5K distances on Sunday. If you're really motivated, you can even make it to both Palo Duro AND Des Moines! Please welcome our new board members when you see them around the clubhouse. Erika Stickney is a brand new board member and is serving as treasurer. Dennis Novak and Stan Pollard return to the board as directors, and Diane Hernandez moves from membership director to vice president. Thank you to all of the board members for your service! See you at the lake! Chris Morris LGRAW President Please note that your LGRAW membership expires on LGRAW

David and Bridget Smith, Best Foot Forward Honorees, flanked by Belynda Warner and Chris Morris. Every year, the RAW 4th of July picnic with the annual meeting and election is popular and fun, and this year's event did not disappoint. Despite the crazy but predictable heat, the clubhouse lawn was full of RAW families and friends with their chairs and coolers enjoying some holiday R&R together. After a delicious BBQ and potluck dinner, RAW members voted for the new Board of Directors and celebrated with the winners of three awards. The first award of the evening, the Gunga Din Award, was presented by outgoing Vice President Staci Rivero. Dubravko and Sakina Vidacak were not present at the picnic, but they were awarded the Gunga Din Award for doing water duty the most times in 2015. Dubravko and Sakina, along with their chidren, picked up their certificate and canteen at the clubhouse following the next weekend's run. Second, Kelly "K2" Richards was awarded the long overdue RRCA 2000 Hours Outstanding Volunteer award. Belynda Warner presented the certificate to an unsuspecting Kelly on behalf of RAW and the RRCA, and highlighted some of the ways that Kelly serves the running community on a nearly daily basis. The Vidacak Family recognized for Last, but certainly not least, the Best Foot volunteering for water duty more than Forward award was presented by last year's anyone else in the club. winner, Belynda Warner. To great applause and lots of RAW love, David and Bridget Smith accepted RAW's highest honor for their longtime commitment to the club and to the running community in general. David and Bridget will receive custom jackets to commemorate their award. Following the award presentation, the ballots were counted, and new board members were https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1125207095811&format=html&print=true

announced. Diane Hernandez was elected Vice President, Erika Stickney was elected Treasurer, and Dennis Novak and Stan Pollard were both elected Directors. Thank you to outgoing officers Staci Rivero and Jeff Garber for several years of service. (Diane Hernandez was previously a director, and the other director position was vacant.) After the business meeting, club members and friends enjoyed the evening socializing in the shade. David Ball provided the American flag that was the centerpiece of the evening. David also took dozens of photographs, some of which were posted to the LGRAW Facebook page. The evening ended in a brilliant and booming fashion with the City of Grapevine's fireworks display. As always, RAW had the best seat in town for the show. What a way to celebrate Independence Day!

20th Anniversary SubCommittee Do you want to be a big part of making our 20th Anniversary Celebration special, but are not able to commit to working on every monthly event? Have I got the opportunity for you! RAW is looking for a few good men and women to form the 20th Anniversary Banquet Sub committee. This subcommittee will plan and run the grand finale banquet, currently planned for May 20, 2017. The group will need to meet soon to get started, but can then plan from there how the work will be done and allocated and how often to meet. Currently we have four volunteers committed, so don't worry, because with a few more subcommittee members, the banquet planning will be fun and rewarding as everyone shares in the work. Please join and play a role in creating RAW history! Email Belynda at astr@lgraw.com with questions and to sign up.

20 Fun & Fascinating Facts about RAW By Kelly "K2" Richards 1. When the club was first officially formed in June 1997, it was called Grapevine Runners Club. By August of 1997, the name already changed to Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers. "We wanted to extend our membership to Southlake, Colleyville, Keller, Flower Mound and the surround area", said Craft, "and we wanted to include walkers". 2. The original board of directors had a director of common sense. This position was held by Gary Howsam. 3. The clubhouse, secured on a six month trial basis in December 1997 after efforts to secure a Grapevine Parks and Rec building fell through, was originally furnished with a couch and color TV. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1125207095811&format=html&print=true

4. RAW manned an aid station at the Dallas White Rock Marathon (dubbed the Wet Rock due to the rainy conditions) for the first time in December 1997. RAW chartered a luxury motor coach from Wilhoites to "the Rock". Willhoite's provided coffee, bagels and fruit to anyone who rode the bus. Following the race there was an allyoucaneat buffet at Wilhoite's. Race entry fee was $50 before race day and $60 on race day. 5. The first Bold in the Cold 5K and 15K was held on an unusually warm day in January 1999. 6. The Luau, held at various members' homes annually since 2000, is one of the mostloved and bestattended RAW social events each year. 7. In October 2001, nearly 30 RAW members covered 135 miles of the AAmericans United Flag Across America run following the September 11th attacks. 8. The 2002 FOOTPRINT (Editor Susan Barnett) was awarded the Jerry Little Memorial Journalism Award (medium club) National Outstanding Newsletter of the year by the RRCA. 9. The 2004 Double Trouble 5K and 10K race shirt won Runners Triathlete News Silver Award for Best Race Tshirt. The race logo was designed by RAW member David Ball. 10. The east/west section of Dove Loop referred to as the Dove Loop extension didn't exist before 2004. Before it existed, the East loop was five miles. The route came out of Oak Grove Park and ran behind the gas station then went north on Dove, which became Dove Loop at the light, back towards the clubhouse for approximately ¼ mile to the 2.5 mile mark where you turned around and ran back the way you had come. 11. The club's official unofficial policy regarding supplies is never run out of toilet paper, coffee or freeze pops. In that order. 12. The RAW Navy was formed in 2006 and until 2014 RAW members met Monday mornings from Memorial Day to Labor Day to paddle. Steven "Dog Dude" Rush and Debbie Carpenter provided most of the kayaks and organized the paddles. 13. On Independence Day 2007, RAW held a 10th Anniversary 10K Fun Run. The event was $10 for nonmembers and $5 for members. It featured freeze pop and adultstyle aid stations. Finishers received a commemorative Tshirt and a 10th Anniversary Amber Ale named RAW Ambit10n homebrewed by Kevin Wessels. Label was designed by Lorraine Wessels. RAW Ambit10n won the silver award for best finisher's item from Runners Triathlete News. K2 was the race director. 14. In 2009 board of director terms went from one year to two years. For 2009 only four positions remained a one year term, so that elections would still be held annually but only for some positions each year. This way the whole board cannot turn over at once. 15. In 2009 RAW made its biggest purchase to date, an IPICO timing system. The same system is still used today to time our races. 16. A Social Media committee, consisting of Kathryn Gleghorn, Rick Sanford and Kelly "K2" Richards, was formed in 2011 to determine if the world was ready for RAW to officially https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1125207095811&format=html&print=true

get on Facebook. We still aren't sure if it is! 17. In 2012, based on RAW's submission (including this video) with the support of the city council, Parks & Rec and local businesses, Grapevine was designated an RRCA Runner Friendly Community. The designation is good through 2017 when we'll have to reapply for the designation. 18. For years, an unidentified RAW member has (presumably) run the Bare as your Dare 5K and Skinny Dipper Sun Run. An assumed to be notneeded rac e shirt is usually on the ceiling at the clubhouse by the day after the race. We bet you check out the shirts a little more closely now! 19. Ray Harris and Joe Luccioni are the only two (of eight) presidents to have served multiple but non consecutive terms as President. 20. In 2015 RAW established a College Scholarship for a graduating high school student. The first $2,000 scholarship was awarded in spring 2016 to Madison Schumm.

K2 Conquers the Madison Marathon! Editor's Note: K2's race report first appeared in the "Footprint" in June 2000. The Madison Marathon was her third marathon/state and it was run a year before her 50 States quest began. See RAW Off to the Races for details on how you can join Kelly "K2" Richards in celebrating her 50 States (plus D.C.) Finish Line in October.

I did it! I beat my 3:50 goal time! My official time at the Madison Marathon was 3:47:45. I beat my (10/99) Chicago time by 16 minutes and 17 seconds! I was the 40th female overall! (Okay, so it was a small race 759 runners.) I came in 248th overall. Saturday was an insane day of travel. It took 11+ hours to get from Dallas to Madison. That would be over four hours of plane delays, one canceled flight and then a nearly twohour drive in the rain from Milwaukee to Madison. We arrived in Madison so late, that we missed the race expo. Luckily, while sitting at the airport in St. Louis I was able to talk a kind woman working at the hotel where the race expo was being held, into going to the expo and getting my race number and timing chip. I was beginning to think I would have to personally hunt down the race director because I was NOT going to run the race "unofficially". Race morning was nice and chilly (48 degrees). It rained right up until the start of the race. The skies were overcast, and the temp never went over 50 degrees. In other words it was PERFECT marathon weather. The only weather burden was some intense winds around miles 2325. The course was awesome. We ran by a few lakes, through lots of treelined bike paths, alongside a golf course, and through some ritzy neighborhoods. We even passed the Governor's mansion. This was my first marathon with hills. They weren't so bad, but I still think my next one will be (in a long time) on a flat course. For most of the first 13 miles, I ran a little recklessly. I was waving to any spectators that were out there and thanking every traffic cop I saw. I even ended up running with a guy named Greg for most of the first 13 miles. We were just chatting away and running too fast for early miles. The second half I got more serious but slowed down a bit (okay, I slowed down by about 25 seconds a mile). By mile 20, I was physically hurting. Despite running two other marathons, this was the first time I ever hurt while running. My quads were sore, and I could feel my second toes swelling. I only have eight toenails as I write this. Stacie Johnson joined me at the halfway mark. Her enthusiasm and energy were a constant source of motivation and comfort. A change in my breathing pattern was all it took to receive a barrage of encouragement. Near the end, my breathing resembled moaning more than anything, but she didn't allow me to ease up. Instead I receive her philosophy lessons; "...I know this sounds crazy but...just try it! Run faster, you can do it. You'll feel better. You'll use different muscles. Just try it." I can't tell you how many times she said that. Finally, I did think she was crazy. She selected my "pickoff" female. I was thinking, "I pick off at 5 k'snot marathons!" Whispering, she told me to take her, and somehow I did. We went through the scenario again with two more females. My final sprint came against a male in the final 385 yards. I was running behind a man near the finish and a group of rowdy male spectators shouting, "Catch him! Go! Go! You can beat him." They were right. In order to qualify for Boston, I need to trim another 7 minutes off my timesomething I cannot imagine doing...yet! I'll be sure to keep you posted though!

Sun Damage from Outdoor Activities by Dr. Charles Kennard, MD (aka, Doctor Chuck) If you're reading this, there is a very good chance that you enjoy pursuing activities that enhance your health. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1125207095811&format=html&print=true

You may run, walk, cycle, paddle, etc. and your activity is probably outdoors. This is where the danger of sunlightinduced damage to the skin and skin cancer comes in. Ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun breaks down the structure of the skin, producing thinned, weakened tissue with altered pigmentation. UV is also the main cause of all the major types of skin cancer. Herewith are some facts and suggestions to keep you active and reduce your risk of damage from the sun. Approximately 4 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the US. Most are nonmelanoma Scott Jurek protects himself from the skin cancer (NMSC) of which basal cell carcinoma sun while running Badwater. accounts for 80% and squamous cell carcinoma the remainder. Basal cell Carcinoma (BCC) is a slowgrowing bump that often resembles a pimple, or a scaly pink patch. BCC almost never spreads to other locations, but will become destructive with progressive growth. The other form of NMSC is squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is often a tender, crusty bump. SCC metastasizes to lymph nodes or other organs in about 1020% of cases. In all, NMSC causes about 5,000 deaths each year in the US. Treatments include curettage (scraping), freezing, topical chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical excision, including the microscopicallydirected MOHs surgery. Melanoma is the most concerning of the common skin cancers. This is due to the much higher likelihood of metastasis and death. Nearly 10,000 deaths in the US from melanoma are predicted for 2016. New medications for advanced melanoma have recently become available, but early diagnosis gives the best chance of cure by surgery before the melanoma has spread. Melanomas can often be recognized by applying the ABCDE rule: melanomas often exhibit Asymmetrical growth; Borders that are irregular or indistinct; Colors that are strange like blue, dark black or red; Diameter of more than a quarter of an inch; and, Evolution of the lesion such as growing, getting darker, itching or scaling. The trend of more skin cancer cases in younger people can definitely be traced to greater intentional exposure to natural sunlight and the use of tanning beds. Melanoma has become a leading cause of cancer and death in those younger than 30 years; it is imperative that those desiring a long, healthy life reduce their exposure to UV whether the source is natural or artificial. Steps that are recommended (in the order I recommend them): limit exposure to UV, no tanning bed use is safe and outdoor activity unprotected from the sun should be limited to the time required for the task. Protect your skin with clothing appropriate to the task/activityhats that have a real brim, long sleeve tops and other articles of clothing. Running and active wear can be protective, functional and attractive. Many high quality sources are available. Runners in the Badwater ultra marathon can be spotted wearing full length tops, pants and caps with a neck drape, so sun protection definitely trumps the "cooling effect" presumed with the bare arms and legs for those competitors. Look for a label designating a high UPF protection rating, or approval by the Skin Cancer Foundation. Lastly, we hear all the time about sunscreen. Sunscreen is for everyday use on areas not protected by clothing. Use at least an SPF of 30 labeled as "broad spectrum" and water resistant, if you're going in the water or will be working or exercising. Remember to apply the sunscreen 1530 minutes before heading out. Don't forget lip balm with UV protection. In my practice of skin cancer surgery, I have had many patients who are avid athletes. I have never told any of them to stop doing what they love and which gives them a healthful, positive experience just because they have had a skin cancer. I recommend that they use their new knowledge and experience with skin cancer treatment to reduce their risks going forward. Studies are clear. There is a significant reduction in risk of future skin cancer when the above listed precautions are taken. And, besides, who wants to spend a day in my office listening to my bad jokes AND having skin cancer surgery when they could be out on the road or trail? Just sayin".

don't think I'll find a running club as warm and welcoming as LGRAW. Every Saturday & Sunday before the sun reaches right above the horizon, I always had the funniest thought that this wonderful, tiny, little shack is truly a slice of heaven and maybe the closest thing to home. I do hope to keep running strong and being a part of the greater running community in Atlanta. If you ever get a chance, come out and visit me in Atlanta. Please watch your email and submit any questions to membership@lgraw.com.
