Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers December 2016 Dear Lake Grapevine Our 20th Anniversary celebration is still going strong many of us attended the Main Street Wine Crawl on November 20, supported by Texas General Store, Grape Vine Springs Winery, Messina Hof Grapevine Winery, Sloan & Williams Winery, Umbra Winery and Wine Fusion Winery. All of the businesses welcomed our group and generously provided discounts on purchases. A big thank you goes out to Kathryn Gleghorn for working with all of the businesses to coordinate their participation in the event and to the entire 20th Anniversary Committee for planning and decorating each of the venues. And there's more exciting information yet to come! Stay tuned. Since the big holidays this year fall on Sunday, we'll hold our club runs as usual on those days. On Christmas Day, come out before your family wakes up or bring them along! Family members and friends are always welcome. We hold our Recovery Run on New Year's Day, so don't miss that, either. Bring a potluck breakfast dish if you'd like, and you may find some recovery drinks to help you along. We'll also be drawing a name to receive a $50 RunOn! or Luke's Locker gift card from our water duty volunteers throughout the 4th quarter. LGRAW's Bold In The Cold 5K & 15K is coming up on January 21, 2017, and registration is going strong! Register today to get your $5 LGRAW club discount for the race I mean literally today this is the last day! But even if you miss the club discount, you can still get a great price on a popular, wellrun race. We will be sending out information soon on how to volunteer, as well. Many of the volunteer positions will allow you to run the race, too. Thank you to everyone who came out to help with the "PseudoCentric" on November 19 at Silver Lake Marina. This wasn't a RAW event, but we were glad to set up an aid station for those folks who were signed up for the abruptly canceled UltraCentric (and some of us who took advantage of the opportunity to get a run in on a closed course with an incredibly supportive group of people). RAW member Suann Guthrie, Kay Scott, and Robert McElroy did such a wonderful job of putting it together at the last minute. See you at the lake! Flashback Guest Contributor: Elise Cerami As part of our 20th Anniversary, we are posting a Flashback article from a previous footprint each month. This month's Flashback article never made it into the Footprint though. It was written by the young 9year old daughter of a member. Elise Cerami volunteered at the Bold In The Cold in 2012 and wrote about her experience for school. Elise, an avid swimmer, died in June. 20 Fun & Fascinating Facts about RAW By Kelly "K2" Richards 1. From December 1997 through December 2013, the FOOTPRINT was a printed newsletter that was mailed to all member households. The digital newsletter, emailed to all members, made its debut in January 2014. 2. When the club was first formed in 1997, the Internet was pretty new, and very few people had personal email, so it was common for people who had work email to use it for personal emails, too. There was an entire club email distribution list back then, and when charter member Jeff Brown sent a picture of himself at the Great Wall of China sporting his spiffy RAWear, the file size of the picture was so large that it took one company's entire email system offline for over a day while the file downloaded. 3. In 1999, RAW held a race called You Can Run But You Can't Hide 2 Mile & 5 Mile. 4. In the early years of the club's existence, RAW parties were known to end with a Moonlight Mile run. The details are barely known. 5. From 2001 to 2008, RAW held an annual "Fun Run" and Social at the clubhouse called the Wine Chaser. Collective memories only recall one year that anyone ran, but the socials were always great fun! 6. The RAW aid station was named the Friendliest Aid Station at the 2004 and 2005 White Rock Marathons, now named the Dallas Marathon. 7. The storage shed at the clubhouse has gone through at least two complete remodels once in December 2005 and once in April 2013. By "complete" we mean every wall, but one was taken down, and then the whole thing was rebuilt from the ground up. All the work was done by our members who donated their time and talent. 8. In the summer of 2006, RAW member Sam Thompson set out to run 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days in what was called Run for Hope to raise funds for Hurricane Katrina victims. Along the way, Sam decided to add DC, so when he arrived back in Texas on August 17, he was running his 49 marathon in 48 days. A handful of RAW runners along with other runners and bikers from the DFWarea ran the Dallas White Rock Marathon course with Sam. Marcus Grunewald, the marathon race director, drove the course as the lead vehicle. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1126465032605&format=html&print=true

9. On December 31, 2005, RAW's first set of Twins, Nick and Nate Eppelman, were born while both mom (Kelly) and dad (Scott) were active members of RAW. 10. The first New Year's Day Recovery Run was held on January 1, 2007. This annual fun run followed by a big potluck breakfast continues today. It is referred to as both the New Year's Day Recovery Run and Resolution Run. 11. In June 2007, a onetime printing of "10 Years Running" Tshirts were made to commemorate RAW's 10th anniversary. If you see anyone wearing one of these shirts then you know they've been a member for at least nine years. 12. The 2007 Double Trouble 10K was named the Road Runners Club of America Texas State 10K Championship. It was the first time a RAW race was awarded Championship status by the RRCA. 13. For the first 10 years, the Bold in the Cold 5K & 15K race participants received coffee mugs (rather than shirts). A Texassized, which is to say very large, coffee mug made a return for the 15th annual BITC. 14. RAW member Debbie Carpenter worked with RoadID™ to have an official RAW logo on their dogstyle IDs, so members could personalize their dog tag ID on one side and sport the RAW logo on the other. Of course, this wasn't just about looking good it was about being safe, too. 15. In 2012, RAW marched in Grapevine's Parade of Lights, the largest lighted Christmas parade in North Texas. The theme was Holiday Story Time. 16. Chiffon Okuda, a RAW member and kettle bell instructor, led a kettle bell demo and class at the clubhouse following a weekend run in March 2013. 17. In December 2013 and 2014, members went on an evening Holiday Lights Run/Walk through the neighborhoods of hosts Bruce and Kathryn Gleghorn ('13) and Carol and Zach Shumm ('14). The festivities continued with delicious holiday snacks and good cheer following the runs. 18. As a service to the Grapevine Police Department, for years, RAW has timed the 1.5 mile and 300 meter runs that all GPD applicants must do during their fitness testing phase of the application process. 19. In September 2016 RAW held its first "Backwards Mile" Fun Run. Participants ran backwards. Brad Liles was the first male and Michelle "Drum" Blackard was the first female. 20. RAW memberships have always run for one year and start and end the day a member joins. Beginning in 2017, all memberships will expire at the end of January.

Annual AntiTurkey Trot

RAW members enjoyed an early Thanksgiving run on the Northshore Trails for the annual AntiTurkey Trot. Members enjoyed a beautiful morning run or hike followed by food and fun.

20th Anniversary Celebration: LGRAW's Main Street Wine Crawl November's 20th Anniversary event, "LGRAW's Main Street Wine Crawl" brought out 50 wine crawlers to enjoy downtown Grapevine's Main Street wineries on a beautiful fall day. The 20th Anniversary Committee put together a fun social event that allowed the club to partner with six Main Street businesses. The Texas General Store hosted our check in and offered RAW's wine crawlers a 20% discount on any purchases made that day. From the Texas General Store, participants headed a few blocks down the street to Wine Fusion Winery and then back up Main Belynda Warner and Heather Yamane toast good times Street to enjoy wine stops at Umbra, Grape Vine Springs, Sloan & Williams, and Messina Hof wineries. A Day at the PseudoRace by Helene "LN" Walker What started as horrible news resulted in a community of runners working together to create their own memorable event. I was excited and proud to be a part of this day. PseudoCentric ... Formerly known as the Ultracentric 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 Hours races was cancelled ten days prior to race day. What I loved the most about the PseudoCentric event was to see how our running community came PseudoRunners Suann Guthrie, Chris Morris, and Tabitha together. As a friend told me: "When life gives you lemons, Hedrick make lemonade!" And we made plenty of sweet lemonade! If our lemons were the race cancellation, our lemonade was to organize a fat ass* run. And receive donations for the makeshift aid station. And have runners show up, ready to run, volunteer and cheer us on! The first glass of lemonade was made when Suann Guthrie and I decided to still go run for six hours, despite the race being cancelled. We invited some friends to join the fun. She then created a Facebook event with the help of two other runners, and the PseudoCentric event was born! On PseudoRace day, about twenty runners showed up early, ready to run! Of course, the gate leading to the location of the PseudoCentric event was locked (another lemon!), and the loop was about 0.17 mi away from the gate, according to Garmin. And yes, you guessed it, this was our 3rd lemon, as we now had to carry all the gear each of us had brought for this event, as it was selfsupported. Plus all the stuff that Chris Morris, President of RAW, had in his car for the RAW aid station: folding tables, chairs, food, two containers filled with water, and two with Gatorade. This is when all the runners present helped make more lemonade, as they all grabbed something and walked all the way to the loop. We must have looked like mules under our heavy burden. The lemonade pitcher kept filling up when some runners showed up to volunteer and cheer us on. During my early laps, I saw Greg Jesensky waiting for us at the aid station. He jumped in, and ran a few laps with us. A few more laps, and there was Heather Yamane, Belynda Warner, Byron Benoit, John Studebaker, Martin Guthrie and Suann's son, Marshall. And Chris and Anne Barnwell, the Grasslands and Rockledge Rumble race directors, who not only donated stuff for the aid station, they also brought more food! More donations were made by Jason Constantino, the El Scorcho race director. And RunOn! in Coppell donated gels and sports drinks and some cute key chains as finisher's awards! Another cheering volunteer, Melissa Linan, took many photos of us running in circles, and she also "volunteered" her son Max and his friend Reid to man the aid station. And they did a good https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1126465032605&format=html&print=true

job of manning the table and cheering us! An ultrarunner friend of mine, Tabitha Hedrick, also "volunteered" her daughter Rebekah, while she ran many laps with me. My personal glass of lemonade was running some laps with my friends: Suann Guthrie, Eileen Pontaoe, Jennifer van Vlack, Tabitha Hedrick, Greg Jesensky and Chris Morris. And making new friends as the laps went by. I did reach my goal of running 28 miles, despite some knee issues. And I was elated when I finished the 6 hours with 29.25 miles! But I think the sweetest lemonade was made when our own RAW president, Chris Morris, thought he was going to run a halfmarathon, PseudoVolunteers Max and Reid man the RAW aid and ended up running not only a full station marathon (26.2 miles) but an ultra! (26.7 miles). Did I mention it was his very first full marathon? And ultra too? In his own words: "When I was thinking about coming out to run, I thought I might do some speed work on the flat halfmile course. But when I saw how beautiful the weather would be, I planned to try for a half marathon instead since I struggled with my last two. Fortunately, I talked to Jered Mansell out on the course, and he informed me that since this was an ultramarathon event, I wouldn't be allowed to stop at a half. I was thankful to get that advice from a seasoned ultra runner glad he saved me from a DQ!" So, despite the disappointment caused by the lastminute cancellation of the Ultracentric races, we ended up having a great time at the PseudoCentric event. Who knows? It might even become a running tradition, where we run for as long as we want? Stay tuned! *FAT ASS is the name given to a series of low key runs that are frequented by experienced runners and walkers and characterized by the phrase No Fees, No Awards, No Aid, No Wimps.

FOOTPRINT December 2016

Footprint Submissions We are always looking for content to include in the FOOTPRINT. Share your race or training experiences with RAW! If you have a running/walking related story or photo you'd like to share with the club, consider submitting it for the FOOTPRINT. If writing is not a strength you possess, no problem. Just send us some notes and photos, and our happy articlewriting elves will write it up and send it back for your approval. The deadline for submitting to the Footprint is the 22nd of each month. Provide more time if you need assistance with writing. Email pr@lgraw.com.
