Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers February 2016 Dear Lake Grapevine Racing season is coming into full swing again with Cowtown Marathon, Half Marathon, and Ultra, as well as Haltom Stampede 5K coming up this month. And don't forget Grasslands Trail Run coming up in March. You may notice some changes around the clubhouse. There is some new gravel out front. Thanks to Jeff "Barney" Barnhart, Joe Luccioni, and Gary Howsam. Barney also laid down some interlocking flooring in the restroom to make it a bit easier to keep clean and provide a surface nicer than the concrete. The board of directors is considering the installation of the same flooring in the entire clubhouse. If you have feedback, please contact a board member. At the recommendation of the Bylaws Committee, the board has decided to streamline the membership process. Starting in 2017, we will be moving to having all memberships renew in January. This will make it unnecessary to keep track of your renewal date, as everyone's membership will expire on January 31. Details on the transition to the new process are below. Thank you to the members of the Bylaws Committee for their work in making this change. If you have a son or daughter graduating in 2016 and who has participated in track or cross country, be sure to encourage them to apply for the LGRAW College Scholarship. The deadline is March 1, so don't delay! See you at the lake! Chris Morris LGRAW President Please note that your LGRAW membership expires on LGRAW

New Membership Policy We're trying to make your LGRAW membership renewal process easier. Starting in 2017, all memberships will expire on January 31. There won't be a need to remember when your membership expires. We'll let everyone know at the same time that they need to renew in the month of January to avoid interruption in their membership. To transition to the new process for membership renewals, those people whose membership renews from January thru April will be charged the full membership price in 2016 ($20 individual or $30 family), and their membership will expire on January 31, 2017. Those who renew May thru October will be charged half price ($10 individual or $15 family), and their membership will also expire on January 31, 2017. Memberships that renew in November or December will be charged for a full year, but their membership won't expire until January 31, 2018. We will also transition the process for new LGRAW members. Those who join the club January thru June will pay the full membership price and then renew in January of the next year. Anyone who joins in July thru December will pay the full price and be paid until January of the following year. For example, a new membership initiated in May 2016 will expire in January 2017, and a new membership initiated in October 2016 will expire in January 2018. We will do our best to avoid confusion during this transition by communicating the change as memberships expire. Please watch your email and submit any questions to membership@lgraw.com.

LGRAW Board Meeting Don't forget to check out the February LGRAW Board Meeting! The meeting will take place on Monday, February 8, 7 PM at Nannette Poole's home, 919 Mockingbird Lane, Grapevine. Water Duty Volunteers Thank you to the volunteers who have set water and Gatorade out on the course EVERY Saturday and Sunday! Without your kindness, there would be a LOT of thirsty runners and walkers on the course. Many thanks to everyone that volunteered for Water Duty in January: Dale Mauger, Debbie Yatko, Mike Eccleston, Danyah ArafatJohnson, Jeff Nicodemus, Imelda Douglas, Steve Olson, Brad and Michelle Liles, Sakina and Dubravko Vidacak, Jeff "Barney" Barnhart, Stacie Sauber and Randy Wolf. Water duty has been a little less fun than usual. The rainy weekends and flooding have required an alternate second water stop location in an area closed to vehicular traffic roads. The RAW board of directors recognizes this hardship. As an extra incentive to volunteer for water duty, everyone who volunteers for Water Duty will be put in a quarterly drawing for a $50 Gift Card! There are plenty of slots open for the first quarter of 2016. Be sure to sign up!

Hoka Rep Coming to RAW The Hoka shoe rep will be at LGRAW on Saturday, February 6th during our usual morning run. This is a great opportunity to try on a pair of Hokas and talk to the rep about the different styles.

Third Tuesday Social Run Third Tuesday of the Month Social Run at Grapevine Craft Brewery LGRAW will hold the next installment of our 5K social run/walk starting and ending at Grapevine Craft Brewery at 6 PM on Tuesday, February 16. Follow the event on Facebook and invite your friends. If you prefer a longer distance, two miles can easily be added to the route. Or cut it short, if you want to get to the "Social" part quicker. The event is open to everyone you do not have to be a member of LGRAW, so bring your friends! Relax in the taproom or beer garden after the run.

LGRAW Members Honored by Grapevine Chamber

Joe was awarded the Chamber's Award for his work on the 911 Memorial.

Virtual Maui 5K Break out your grass skirts, coconut bras, and leis, because RAW is going Hawaiian! The Maui 5K is held annually in Maui, and as a virtual race, to raise badly needed funds for the schools on the island. Kat Sparks and Jay Jones ran the actual race in Maui and loved it. Since then, several RAW members have participated in the virtual Race. This year we decided to take it to the next level and invite all of RAW to join us. We will hold an informal 5K run on the same day as the 2016 Maui 5K,Sunday, March 20, starting right after club announcements. Following the run or walk, join us for Hawaiian themed snacks. You DO NOT need to register for the Maui 5K virtual race in order to participate in the RAW run, but if you would like to register to receive a Maui 5K tshirt and goodies by mail after the race, information can be found at http://maui5k.org/ . Click through the link on that page to register, or go here: https://www.flpregister.com/144 . Again, registration is not required to run with RAW.

The race was started by Suzi and Michael Cope, LGRAW members, and has been supported by the club through participants and volunteers since 1999. Chris Barnwell is now the Grasslands Race Director and active member of LGRAW. If you are interested in volunteering this year, contact Joe Luccioni at bronx300@verizon.net. If you are interested in running, visit www.nttr.org/grasslands/ to register. Members of LGRAW get a $10 discount (GL16LGRAW) but must register by February 15 to use the code. After that, registration rates increase, and discount codes will expire. Grasslands Trail Run supports the nonprofit organization, Friends of the Grasslands, a group that maintains many of the trails within the Grasslands.

In Step With

Jennifer Van Vlack How long have you been running competitively? I started running February 2013, after my daughter was born. I wasn't fast, but I was competing against the old me, so it counts. FOOTPRINT February 2016

started getting more competitive in the summer of 2014, when I won my first age group award. Tell us about your first Boston Marathon. What did you learn? I haven't ran Boston, but I have toyed with trying to qualify. I'm about 25 minutes off. I can't decide if I want to focus on getting faster or going farther. I just signed up for a 100 miler, so Boston is on the back burner for now. What do you enjoy about running? I enjoy the tranquility of early morning runs, when the world is still sleeping. It's like you own the streets. I also enjoy the friends I've made. I tell people running with my friends is like how other people go for coffee or happy hour. What's your favorite place to run? Central Park. Or Lake Grapevine. Same thing, right? But seriously, I love both of those places. When races get hard, I focus on the lake. I just picture the 8 mile route at the end of the race and I know I can do it. What do you think is most important about your training for a race? Consistency. It doesn't matter what training plan you use, but consistency is key to success. Also back to back long runs. I think that helped my racing more than any one thing I can point to. Do you have any running advice or insight for others? There comes a point where it hurts, but it won't hurt anymore. That's what I tell myself in the later miles. I take some weird comfort in knowing it won't get worse. What is your favorite running memory? NYC was one of my favorite races, but I think the first time I broke 4 hours is my favorite memory. It was Las Vegas, and I ran with a girl I met in at the start. We both had the same goal, and it felt great to see all the months of training pay off. I took almost an hour and a half off my previous marathon time. (Consistency) What do you do in your life outside the club? I have a 3 year old. She keeps me busy. I used to read a lot, but I don't have time for that as much. I work in fraud prevention. I love my job, too. But I definitely need to run to keep sane. What's something about you that would surprise us? I used to teach college English. That was my job when I first moved to DFW. Now I just have a running blog. I like writing still even if I don't do it for a living.
