Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers January 2016 Dear Lake Grapevine December started out with a festive and wellattended Holiday Party at Lancaster Theatre in downtown Grapevine. Nannette Poole and Monica Waite teamed up to make sure everything was taken care of and went off without a hitch. They put a lot of work into planning and I heard nothing but glowing compliments about the party. Thank you to them, as well as everyone else who helped make the party a success! The Dallas Marathon aid station was another roaring success, headed up by Joe Luccioni and staffed by dozens of LGRAW volunteers. It was great to see everyone on a warm, rainy day, and the conditions didn't deter any of the volunteers. I think I know how Meb must feelas I ran my half marathon through the aid station and heard everyone yelling my name. It was a great feeling! Unfortunately, the Bold in the Cold was cancelled due to flooding conditions on the course and the parking area. However, our Board of Directors came up with a fair resolution for people who had already registered. Identifying the problem early meant that limited expenses were incurred and we offer deferrals to future LGRAW races in 2016 or 2017 (or refunds, if they preferred). Thank you to the officers and directors of the board for all they have accomplished. Also, thank you to all who have joined the various committees. The board also made the decision to leave the director position vacated by Kathryn Gleghorn open until our next board election in July. We are grateful to have had three people express an interest in the position, and we look forward to having more people involved in the governance of the club. As always, club members are welcome to attend our board meetings, and guests are typically encouraged to contribute their opinions during meetings. You may notice that the Footprint is in a slightly different format as we have shifted to a mobilefriendly format. This should not affect desktop users adversely. Please let us know what you think by emailing pr@lgraw.com. Also, please welcome Anne Barnwell to the Footprint team this month. She is taking care of layout duties, starting with this issue. Thank you, Anne! We've been talking a lot about the upcoming RRCA Convention in Dallas. We have a great opportunity for more members to attend without the necessity of air travel. The club will reimburse up to nine LGRAW members to attend the convention or become an RRCAcertified coach. Convention attendees can learn about a variety of topics related to running clubs and races. If you'd like to get more involved with the club, don't miss it. See details below about how to apply for full or partial reimbursement for the convention or coaching program. The application deadline is January 15. Chris Morris, LGRAW President Please note that your LGRAW membership expires on LGRAW
Scholarship Available for RRCA Convention: Due January 15 As a commitment to our club and the development of current and future board members, race directors and our Couch to 5K program, the board of directors has agreed to grant nine convention scholarships in total. Five full scholarships are available to the convention and four partial scholarships are available to the coaching certification cohort. The RRCA National Convention will be held March 17 19 in Dallas. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1123253437790&format=html&print=true

If you are considering joining the leadership of the club or directing a club race in the future, you may find the educational sessions interesting. They cover many topics, including First Steps for New Board Members, Strategic and Tactical Planning and Effective Behavior for All Board Members. You can also complete the RRCA Coaching Certification at the convention. The registration price includes convention attendance and can be partially reimbursed by LGRAW if you commit to training a "Couch to 5K" or other training course at the club. You may also coach outside the club after receiving the certification. The application to request reimbursement for the coaching certification program is here, and the form for convention fee reimbursement is here. The deadline to return the applications is January 15. Grantees will be selected by committee and notified by February 1.
LGRAW Board Meeting Don't forget to check out the January LGRAW Board Meeting! The meeting will take place on Monday, January 11, 7 PM at Nannette Poole's home, 919 Mockingbird Lane, Grapevine. All members are welcome to attend. Do you have an agenda item you would like to add? Email the board secretary by Thursday, January 7.
LGRAW Volunteers Make Dallas Marathon Great! Thank you to Joe Luccioni, Water Stop Captain, and all of the volunteers that worked the Mile 7 Water Stop at the Dallas Marathon. Thousands of runners appreciated the water, Gatorade and words of encouragement.
Jesse Saenz shows great skills with the Gatorade.
All in the family. Katie and Robin Pearson, Gloria Bush and her Grandson Caleb volunteer together.
Left to Right: Rick Sanford, John Bush, Steve "Dog Dude" Rush.
"Jersey Mike" Bassano and Alan Sivakumaran take care of the runners.
Water Duty Volunteers Thank you to the volunteers who have set water and Gatorade out on the course EVERY Saturday and Sunday! Without your kindness, there would be a LOT of thirsty runners and walkers on the course. Many thanks to the following people who have done water duty in the past month: Jeff Nicodemus, Jeff "Barney" Barnhart, Mary Malley, Russ and Liz Wedemeyer, Terry Marcott, Jay Jones (two times) and Kat Sparks (two times). Water duty has been a little less fun than usual. The rainy weekends and flooding has required an alternate second water stop location in an area closed to vehicular traffic roads. The RAW board of directors recognizes this and as an extra incentive to volunteer for water duty, everyone who volunteers for Water Duty will be put in a quarterly drawing for a $50 Gift Card! Because we're extra thankful for everyone who has already volunteered, the first drawing will be on January 1st at the Recovery Run and Potluck Breakfast. All Water Duty volunteers from October, November, and December will have a chance to win the first gift card. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1123253437790&format=html&print=true

LGRAW Holiday Party
The Annual LGRAW Holiday Party shows once again that our club members clean up very nicely. Club members, spouses, and significant others had a great time celebrating the holiday season at a new location, the Lancaster Theatre. Thank you to Nannette Poole and Monica Waite for their hard work planning and preparing for the Holiday party.
In Step With
Kris "Ryan" Batol: The Pursuit of Each New PR 1. Are you a native Texan, or did you get here as soon as you could? No, I'd like to believe myself one; I grew up in Houston from ages 412 before moving East. Now back in the Lone Star State after completing university and getting a job offer in DFW. 2. How long have you been running competitively? Define competitively? I'm not very fast, but I'd hope that every time I lace up my shoes, I'm racing against myself and always trying to shave a few seconds off my PR. 3. Tell us about your first Boston Marathon. What did you learn? Not Applicable!! But hopefully I'll be fast enough to qualify soon. 4. What do you enjoy about running? https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1123253437790&format=html&print=true

I enjoy running with a friend or with a bunch of them. Running solo is mentally grueling as I get older. 5. What's your favorite place to run? I love the West Loop by Lake Grapevine. But my favorite place I've run was through Midtown Atlanta on Peachtree Street doing a loop around Piedmont Park. 6. What do you think is most important about your training for a race? I find that Discipline and Determination to push through the really crummy runs is incredibly important, and you'll find that if you push through those bad runs, you can push through a race. 7. What is your favorite running memory? Finishing my first half marathon on Thanksgiving Day 2010. The feeling was inexplicable and opened the door to so many running opportunities. 8. What do you do in your life outside the club? I'm a full time R&D Systems Integration Engineer. Work, baking for fun, (and running) sum up most of my days! 9. What's something about you that would surprise us? I'm not the youngest person at the club!! (I'm probably the 2nd youngest.)
A Return to Running: Oncor Mayor's 5K
Posing with The Grinch, LGRAW members had a blast celebrating a return to running and racing for two of our members. Mary Keeffe returned after suffering a broken humerus from a bicycle crash last July at RAGBRAI (Registers Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa). Marty Metzger had an almost two year hiatus from running. His time off included hip resurfacing in November 2014. Early December was the first time he was able to run a full mile without pain. Mary and Marty were both flattered that 12 LGRAW friends not only joined for their race but the group completed their 5K togethera runwalk pace of just under 13 minutes/mile. Dennis Dixon took this opportunity to complete his 2nd 5K way to go Dennis! Marty's employer, Oncor, sponsored the kid focused event, provided complimentary registrations, and invited guests to a delicious postrace breakfast buffet at the Hyatt. Safety Reminder: Crossing Railroad Tracks Recently a runner in Tacoma, Washington was killed when crossing a railroad track. The runner waited for one train to pass but was then hit by a second train that he did not anticipate or see. Remember when crossing the tracks to look both ways before crossing. The following are a few safety tips from Union Pacific: Cross only at designated public crossing with either a crossbuck, flashing red lights or gate. It can take a mile or more to stop a train. Trains overhang the tracks by at least 3 feet. You can be hit if you are right next to the tracks. Do not cross tracks immediately after train passes. A second train might be blocked by the first. Flashing red lights indicate a train is approaching from either direction. You can be fined for failure to obey these signals. Turn off music and remove earphones at all rail crossings. Wet train tracks can be slippery. Step over the tracks, not on them, to avoid slipping. Be aware trains do not follow set schedules.
