Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers June 2016 Dear Lake Grapevine We are only one month away from one of the best events of the yearthe July 4th picnic. This LGRAW tradition is the perfect event to attend with family, to socialize with fellow members and to enjoy the best seat in town for the Grapevine fireworks display. Be sure to save the date and look for more details coming soon. Dinner begins around 5:30 p.m. The picnic is also the day for our Annual Membership Meeting. Following dinner, we will hold our annual meeting and board election at 7 p.m. The winner of RAW's prestigious "Best Foot Forward Award" will also be announced during the meeting. We hope that each of you can attend, but if you must miss it, details are below on how you can cast your vote in the board election by email or postal mail. Don't forget to sign up for our summer "RAW Off to the Races" events. The xSIGHTment 5K in Colleyville on Saturday, June 4, is always a popular event for our club. Be sure to sign up under our "Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers" team. It's not too hilly, and there will be pancakes served afterwards. You may also pick up one of the "eye" trophies, if you place in your age group. Also, save some money by signing up for the Rise Above the Flood Grapevine Lake 5K with the code "RAW16." The race will be held Saturday, July 30, at Grapevine Craft Brewery, and all proceeds go to help restore the lake parks to their preflood condition. See you at the lake! Chris Morris LGRAW President Please note that your LGRAW membership expires on LGRAW

New Membership Policy We're making the LGRAW membership renewal process easier. Starting in 2017, all memberships will expire on January 31. Those who renew through October will be charged half price ($10 individual or $15 family), and membership will also expire on January 31, 2017. Memberships that renew in November or December will be charged for a full year, but membership won't expire until January 31, 2018. We will also transition the process for new LGRAW members. Those who join the club January through June will pay the full membership price and then renew in January of the next year. Anyone who joins in July through December will pay the full price and be paid until January of the following year. For example, a new membership initiated in May 2016 will expire in January 2017, and a new membership initiated in October 2016 will expire in January 2018. We will do our best to avoid confusion during this transition by communicating the change as memberships expire. Please watch your email and submit any questions to membership@lgraw.com.

Membership System Transition

Memberships to be processed through TheDriven.net To provide added flexibility and to resolve issues that have impacted some of our members, we will be transitioning to TheDriven.net to track and collect payment for LGRAW memberships. We will soon begin to send renewal reminders from TheDriven, but if you submit your payment through RunSignUp, don't worry! We will make sure that you are properly credited, and that your membership is extended appropriately during this transition period. If you do not receive your reminder email, you can find current membership renewal information at http://www.lgraw.com/membership. Fees for payments submitted through TheDriven are exactly the same as RunSignUp. We also intend to transition our race registrations to TheDriven this year. TheDriven works with many races in the DFW Metroplex and nationwide, as well as with clubs like Dallas Running Club. If you have any questions about your membership, email membership@lgraw.com. For any other questions about the transition to TheDriven, please email president@lgraw.com.

The LGRAW board of directors recognizes and appreciates the effort made to get water and Gatorade out for our runners and walkers. As an extra incentive to volunteer for water duty, everyone who volunteers for Water Duty will be put in a quarterly drawing for a $50 Gift Card! There are plenty of slots open in June. Taking the "T" out of CAN'T

By Jessica Tondre It was the first day of my second year volunteer coaching one of the Trophy Club Roanoke Track & Field Kindergarten 1st grade girls' teams. "I can't," one of my track athletes said to me in reference to the 200m dash. Her reasoning wasn't medical (they sign a waiver before participating). It was mental. She informed me that it was too far, and that she only wanted to jump and do shot put. Another athlete said that she couldn't shot put because she was told she wasn't strong. CAN'T. It's a powerful word. And just as powerful, if not more, is the subtraction of the apostrophe and the "t." As their coach, it's my goal to show these girls that they CAN, and they WILL accomplish all they set their minds to in this track and field season. The organization began in the 201415 school year under the direction of NISD Athletics, and the season lasts from late March to early May. My daughter Carleigh's interest in running is what brought me to volunteer. Kids, even between 57 years old, can be very competitive and judgmental of themselves. My RRCA Coaching Certification helped me teach them the RRCA guidelines for youth running according to Training for Young Distance Runners by Larry Greene: * Make running fun * Emphasize good technique * Focus on participation and selfimprovement * Consider individual differences * Limit systematic training and competition before puberty * Increase running workload gradually * Participate in age appropriate running events Most, if not all of the girls and parents had "competing" on their minds upon signing up. By explaining to them that the focus was on beating their previous times, I hoped to instill a sense of pride and determination in each girl no matter her ability or age. This age group participated in the 200m, 100m, 50m hurdles, 50m shuttle relay, shot put, and long jump. They are required to participate in all events, so that they are exposed to it all (more events as they become age appropriate) which I think it's fabulous for later running programs. During our once a week, onehour workouts, we work on dynamic stretching, running form, agility work, and speed, along with field event practice. We conclude each practice with a game of their choice. My girls named their team the "Pink Princess Puppies". Over the season, they all showed improvement from their first meet. I am not a "natural" runner. It's my passion, but I have to work at it. As a mom, I like to show my kids that they CAN do anything they set their mind to, even if it doesn't come easy. When I saw the opportunity to coach these 710 girls each season, I jumped at it. It was a chance for me to influence them on the track and off and to show them that they may have been told CAN'T in the past, but there is no apostrophe "T" in Pink Princess Puppies!

Road Runners Club of America News By Kelly "K2" Richards, RRCA AtLarge Director The success of the RRCA and its clubs and events is based on volunteerism. Since its inception in 1958, the RRCA has relied on the spirit of volunteers to carry out programs, find sponsors, hand out water, work finish lines, and many other important tasks. It is in recognition of these volunteers that the RRCA developed the National 2000 Hours Outstanding Volunteer Recognition Program. Like the RRCA, RAW has also relied on volunteers since the club was founded in 1997. I'm happy to share that Joe Luccioni and Kathryn Gleghorn, two past RAW presidents and invaluable volunteers, are the latest RAW members to be recognized by the RRCA for their 2000 hours of volunteering to the sport of running! Thank you, Joe and Kathryn. RAW wouldn't be the great club it is without the two of you. The first edition of Ready to Run, the new email newsletter dedicated to youth running, was released in early May. This quarterly email will highlight important topics in the sport, provide updates on Kids Run the Nation youth running curriculum and grant fund, and offer tips and recommendations to make your youth running program a success. RRCA Grants First Round of 2016 Runner Friendly Community® Designations to Albuquerque, New Mexico; Helena, Montana; Traverse City, Michigan and Tuscaloosa, Alabama have the "right stuff" of community infrastructure and support plus local government involvement for designation as an RRCA Runner Friendly Community ®. RUN@WORK Day and RUN@School Day®, a nationwide movement to inspire a culture of fitness at work and schools, is on September 16. To help you plan your event, the RRCA has created the RUN@WORK Day and RUN@School Day Planning Kit and Fact Sheets. Free promotional items are available, too. The RRCA has a newly launched website. It has the same great, informative content, and now easy to read information on any mobile device. Want to find your next race? Easily search for races on your phone using the RRCA Calendar. The RRCA invites you to explore and learn about everything the RRCA has to offer to the running community on RRCA.org. Look closely, and you might even see yourself or one of your RAW buds picture on the website. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1124592315735&format=html&print=true

In Step With

Stacey Simonek 1. Are you a native Texan, or did you get here as soon as you could? I was born in Ohio, moved to South Florida when I was 2, and then my husband was transferred for his job to Texas, 9 years ago. 2. How long have you been running competitively? I ran crosscountry and track in Middle and High School. We were state champions in my senior year of high school, I was district champion in long jump, and our relay team, the 4x800, was second in the state and held the school record for a few years. Not sure if it has been broken yet or not.Probably.... 3. What do you enjoy about running? Running is my "me" time. I think, listen to my music, and just like being outside. I pretty much love everything about running. It is the one thing that I don't suck at. 4. What's your favorite place to run? I love running at Parr Park, the beach, or exploring areas around my neighborhood. I also like trail running in the summer months, so I am looking for some good ones. 5. What do you think is most important about your training for a race? Motivation. I work 1012 hours a day and have a 3year old daughter at home with whom I spend every moment of my free time. So I am often physically tired, and getting up for a run is difficult because my alarm goes off at 5:15 for work. 6. Do you have running advice or insight for others? Don't buy new shoes the day before a race. Honestly, I do not. Everyone is different, and I am no expert. 7. What is your favorite running memory? Winning the state championship in high school or running my first half almost 20 years later. I felt like I could still do this even though my body looked and felt way different than in high school. 8. What do you do in your life outside the club? I am an English Language Arts Curriculum Coordinator for Mansfield ISD. So, basically I write curriculum, train teachers and advise them, and work with assessments and state mandates for grades 712 in my district. 9. What's something about you that would surprise us? I am a super nerd. I love reading and watching zombie shows. I am really into Scifi and fantasy. 10. Any other comments? I am relatively new to the club and want to thank the people who have kept me accountable and have been gracious toward me. I am grateful to have this new experience in my life and hope to make some friends at the club.

Club Audit Complete by Jeff Garber, Club Treasurer and Kelly "K2" Richards The club recently went through a formal audit of our 2014 financial records and practices. The audit began in 2015, concluded in 2016, and was conducted by Schnaufer & Walker, P.C. Certified Public Accountants in Dallas. The auditors' opinion was that the club's financial statements were presented fairly and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. We are waiting for the auditors' management letter for recommendations on any deficiencies in internal control. Based on recommendations received during the process of the audit, some procedural practices and responsibilities of the treasurer position changes have already been implemented. A copy of the auditors' report can be found at the clubhouse.

Have you noticed that every Saturday morning the bathroom is sparkly clean and stocked with all the necessary supplies? Then you've noticed the handiwork of Steve Olson and not the RAW fairies that you might've thought were sweeping, mopping and scrubbing the place clean. Steve goes to the clubhouse on most Fridays to clean the bathroom. Since the first of the year, Steve has also kept the clubhouse stocked with a variety of flavored creams for the freshly brewed coffee that is available following every weekend run/walk. Thank you, Steve O, for making the coffee taste great and keeping the biffy spiffy!
