Lake Grapevine Runners & Walkers May 2015 Dear Lake Grapevine, April brought not only warmer temperatures, but some more rain. Even the Boston Marathon wasn't immune, as several RAW members put up impressive times under cold, rainy conditions. Kelly "K2" Richards and Ray Harris made the trip to Des Moines for the national RRCA Convention. They have returned and will be sharing some of the things that they learned and the fun times they had in this issue and in the June FOOTPRINT. Time is running out for you to run for one of the open positions on the RAW Board of Directors. If you're interested, please contact Staci "Tini" Rivero, the head of the Nominations Committee. If you have any questions about what the board entails, talk to any current board member. The deadline for nominations is June 1st. Also, don't forgot to submit your nominations for the RAW Best Foot Forward, the club's most prestigious award. If you have someone in mind, please contact board secretary Monica Waite.

Road Runners Club of America News 57th Annual RRCA National Convention

Bling, Blue, Swag and Stars but not a Single Stalk of Corn! Kelly "K2" Richards The 57th Annual RRCA National Convention was held in Des Moines, Iowa, in conjunction with the 106th Drake Relays April 2226. Like all RRCA conventions, it was a great time! Bling: New this year, everyone who joined the morning group runs and ran around the 2012 Outstanding Runner Friendly Community was given Des Moinesthemed medals after both morning runs courtesy of Ashworth Awards. Blue: The track at Drake Stadium is nicknamed the Blue Oval. During the Relays, Kirani James ran a 44.22 in the 400 meters, taking down Michael Johnson's 19yearold Drake Relays record , a world's best was set in the women's 400 shuttle hurdle relay, 2012 US Olympic Silver medalist Leo Manzano won the track mile in 4:00:05, Heather Kampf won the Grand Blue Mile (road race) in 4:35. Paralympians competed for the first time ever at Drake Stadium. The last events of the weekend were the HyVee Road Races. The 5K served as the RRCA National Championship. Each of the races finished on the Drake track, allowing elites and everyday runners alike to experience the thrill of running on the famous Blue Oval. I opted to run both the half marathon and the 5K, so I had the opportunity to run on the track twice. Swag: 57th Annual RRCA Convention logoed zip up hoodie, beanie cap, gloves and shirt all provided by Leslie Jordan, Inc. Plus whatever other goodies one picked up from the other vendors and RRCA supporters. Stars: Fellow Texan Leo Manzano, fellow Minnesotan (hey, I can claim dual citizenship!) Heather Kampf, Maggie Vessey, sports agent Merhawi Keflezighi, RRCA Distance Running Hall of Fame Inductees Sara Mae Berman and Phil

Stewart. RAW's own Gary Howsam wasn't there, but I did get to pick up his Outstanding Volunteer of the Year award. Corn: Never saw any. Yes, the convention also included a coaching certification course, interesting, informative and fun education sessions, an annual meeting, and elections. Ray Harris will tell you more about those in next month's FOOTPRINT. If all this sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, mark your calendar now because the 58th Annual RRCA National Convention will be right here in Dallas, Texas, March 1719, 2016!

Thank you To all RAW water duty volunteers who take just a few minutes of their time to stock the course with cool water and Gatorade EVERY Saturday and Sunday! Without your kindness, there would be A LOT of thirsty RAW runners on the course. Many thanks to the following people who did water duty in the past month: Nick Kannady, Brandon Couvillion, Imelda Douglas, Christine Stevens, Steve Olson, Jack Hase, Mike Eccleston, Russ and Liz Wedemeyer, Mary Stoner, Gary Howsam, Joe Luccioni and John Bush. RAW Gives Back to the Sport

Thank you volunteers for Run2Rebuild The members of YEP and Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas, would like to extend our sincerest gratitude for your help and guidance through our first 5K, Run2Rebuild. Thank you for bringing us in to your community and giving us advice and direction every step of the way. We are happy to say that the event was a complete success, and we were able to raise $3,170! We are absolutely thrilled with this accomplishment, and it would not have been possible without your help. We cannot emphasize your impact enough. We all greatly appreciate your support. Sincerely, Tia LaFavor President, Young Executive Program Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas Roy Robertson Race Director

Annual Board Election

Eight RAW Board of Directors positions up for election in July Have you ever wanted to be more involved in the club? Now is the time to consider running for a Board position. The annual election will be held on July 4th at the Annual Picnic. We are looking for people to represent the membership as leaders of the club. Serving on the Board is a great way to get involved with the mission, strategy, direction and responsibilities of the club as a notforprofit organization. It's more than just attending meetings it is an educational opportunity where you can find out what goes on behind the scenes and help shape the direction of RAW. Since you are representing the membership of the club, we would like to find people who participate in club events and workouts on a regular basis. The 11 positions on the RAW Board are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer and Director (six positions). The positions up for election in 2015 are President, Secretary, Assistant Treasurer and five director positions. Four director positions are twoyear terms, and one is for one year to complete the term of a board member who resigned. For more information or to submit your nomination,

Footnotes: Want to give a shout out to your running buddy in the Footnotes section? You can send congratulations, condolences, get well, speedy recovery wishes, or wishes of good luck. Submissions should be received by the 25th of the month for the next issue. Send all submissions to the editor.

Couch to 5K Coaches Needed We are planning to offer our Couch to 5K program again this year as a part of the Double Trouble 5K/10K in October. The C25K program would begin about six weeks prior to the race, meeting once a week for group workouts. It is a great way to help motivate and train new and prospective runners, so that they are ready for their first 5K race. If you are interested in helping to coordinate the program for those six weeks, and especially if you are an RRCAcertified coach, please email dt@lgraw.com.

RAW Social Event

Putting the 'W' in RAW for National Public Health Week During the first full week of April each year, The American Public Health Association (APHA) brings together communities across the United States to observe National Public Health Week (NPHW) as a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving our nation. RAW held a casual evening walk on Monday, April 6, to kickoff NPHW. Close to threedozen walkers, kids in strollers, on bikes and scooters participated in the RAW and Healthy (Walk!) on the newly resurfaced trail. The walk was followed by light and healthy refreshments. Thank you to Kathryn Gleghorn and Kelly "K2" Richards for putting the event together. See more pictures from the event here.

Walkers in the RAW and Healthy (Walk!) cross the bridge just before the 5K turnaround.

Sandie Nathan and her sons enjoy the walk (and ride) as a family.

RAW Weddings

RAW member Kat Sparks and her son Matthew Loewen, who was married to Courtney May on April 11 in Sperry, Okla.

Stacie Sauber and Randy Wolf, who are both longtime RAW members, were married on April 4.
