Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers May 2016 Dear Lake Grapevine It's getting to be that time of year again when we elect new members to our board of directors. This year we have two officer positions (vice president and treasurer) and two director positions up for election. The election will be held at our Annual Picnic and Membership Meeting on July 4th. If you are interested in becoming more involved in the club leadership, this is a great opportunity! The nomination form is on the LGRAW website. Please return via mail or email by Wednesday, June 1 at 5:00 p.m. CDT. On the topic of volunteering, we had an amazing selection of prizes available for the folks who gave back to the sport in the past year or so. Thanks to Belynda Warner, Kelly "K2" Richards and Kathryn Gleghorn for soliciting prizes from dozens of sponsors, race directors and other supporters. Also, thank you to all of the club members who donated prizes. I love to be able to reward the best volunteers in running for always being there when we need you! Our July 4th Picnic is also the time when we present the Best Foot Forward, the award for the member who best exhibits the "Spirit of RAW." They are the person who is always going out of their way to be a leader while they mentor and encourage others. Board members are not eligible, so this is for the person who always steps up on their own to get things done. Please see the article below to learn how you can submit a nomination. If you have been thinking about joining LGRAW's board of directors, members are always welcome to join us at the Monthly Board Meeting on Monday, May 9 at 7 p.m. at the clubhouse. If you have any questions, please contact me or any other board member. See you at the lake! Chris Morris LGRAW President Please note that your LGRAW membership expires on LGRAW
New Membership Policy We're making the LGRAW membership renewal process easier. Starting in 2017, all memberships will expire on January 31. Those who renew May through October will be charged half price ($10 individual or $15 family), and membership will also expire on January 31, 2017. Memberships that renew in November or December will be charged for a full year, but membership won't expire until January 31, 2018. We will also transition the process for new LGRAW members. Those who join the club January through June will pay the full membership price and then renew in January of the next year. Anyone who joins in July through December will pay the full price and be paid until January of the following year. For example, a new membership initiated in May 2016 will expire in January 2017, and a new membership initiated in October 2016 will expire in January 2018. We will do our best to avoid confusion during this transition by communicating the change as memberships expire. Please watch your email and submit any questions to membership@lgraw.com.
Membership System Transition
Memberships to be processed through TheDriven.net To provide added flexibility and to resolve issues that have impacted some of our members, we will be transitioning to TheDriven.net to track and collect payment for LGRAW memberships. We will begin to send renewal reminders from TheDriven in midMay, but if you submit your payment through RunSignUp, don't worry! We will make sure that you are properly credited and that your membership is extended appropriately during this transition period. If you do not receive your reminder email, you can find current membership renewal information at http://www.lgraw.com/membership. Fees for payments submitted through TheDriven are exactly the same as RunSignUp. We also intend to transition our race registrations to TheDriven this year. They work with many races in the DFW Metroplex and nationwide, as well as clubs like Dallas Running Club. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1124284109772&format=html&print=true

Water Duty Volunteers Thank you to the volunteers who have set water and Gatorade out on the course EVERY Saturday and Sunday! Without your kindness, there would be a LOT of thirsty runners and walkers on the course. Many thanks to everyone that volunteered for Water Duty in April: Jeff Nicodemus, Alan Sivakumaran, Russ and Liz Wedemeyer, Kris Ryan, Jack Hase, Mike and Terry Toce, Caleb and Shelly Pollock, Jeff Hillhouse, and Wilson Goode. The LGRAW board of directors recognizes and appreciates the effort made to get water and Gatorade out for our runners and walkers. As an extra incentive to volunteer for water duty, everyone who volunteers for Water Duty will be put in a quarterly drawing for a $50 Gift Card! Last quarter's winner was Danyah ArafatJohnson. There are plenty of slots open for this quarter. Be sure to sign up!
Third Tuesday Social Run Third Tuesday of the Month Social Run at Grapevine Craft Brewery LGRAW will hold the next installment of our 5K social run/walk starting and ending at Grapevine Craft Brewery at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17. Follow the event on Facebook and invite your friends. If you prefer a longer distance, two miles can easily be added to the route. Or cut it short, if you want to get to the "Social" part quicker. The event is open to everyone you do not have to be a member of LGRAW, so bring your friends! Relax in the taproom or beer garden after the run.
Volunteer Appreciation Social
RAW Volunteers Are the Best! All of our "RAWsome" volunteers were honoroed on Thursday, April 28. Just to remember the "W" in RAW, the evening started with a 5K Walking Race. The top two male and female finishers received Feetures socks. After everyone returned, pizza and salad were served during the drawing to determine who would get first choice of over 50 prizes for volunteers. And what celebration would be complete without cake! Thank you for another great year of volunteers helping with our races, setting water and Gatorade out on our course each week, staffing aid stations at area races, picking up trash on the trails, and cleaning up the clubhouse. And of course thanks to our board of directors, who put countless hours into helping make the club what it is. We couldn't do it without all of you!

Four Positions Available If you would like to help guide the club into its 20th year, please consider running for a Board position. The annual election will be held on July 4th at the Annual Picnic and Membership Meeting. We are looking for people to represent the membership as leaders of the club. Serving on the board is a great way to get involved with the mission, strategy, direction and responsibilities of the club as a notforprofit organization. It's more than just attending meetings it is an educational opportunity where you can find out what goes on behind the scenes and help shape the direction of RAW. Since you are representing the membership of the club, we would like to find people who participate in club events and workouts on a regular basis. The 11 positions on the RAW Board are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer and Director (six positions). The positions up for election in 2016 are Vice President, Treasurer and two director positions. For more information or to submit your nomination, contact Staci Rivero, the head of the Nomination Committee, or discuss with any current board member. You may access the nomination form here. The deadline is Wednesday, June 1 at 5 p.m. CDT.

Running mentor John Studebaker and Drum by Michelle "Drum" Blackard When I joined RAW in 2008, I had done a few marathons and triathlons and thought I was pretty darn awesome. I had no idea what pace I ran and I had no dreams of being faster. I certainly didn't have my eye on qualifying for the Boston Marathon. During a Monday night BikeRunAndWalk (BRaW) bike ride, Alan Walker convinced me to come out and run with the Trackies. The following night I meet a big group of runners including Troy "Wussie Judge" Pruett, Jon "Polar Bear" Korte, and "Papa" Joe Luccioni. Troy quickly became my mentor and good friend. He taught me how to run intervals, how to keep pace, and how to run enough times at a fast enough pace around the track that I finally stopped smiling. The Trackies are the reason I learned about Boston. They told me about Colleen Casey and how she had qualified for the Olympic Trials. I couldn't believe it! Here I was sharing the track with real athletes, fast athletes. I had to qualify for Boston. I was a consistent 10 minute mile back then. My fastest marathon was 4:34:26. None of that mattered, I knew with their help and expertise, I could do it. Fast forward eight years to April 18, 2016. My first Boston Marathon. Troy was the first runner whose faith in my ability I trusted more than my own. John Studebaker was the second. John paced me to two Boston qualifying marathons in a row, the second one finally being fast enough to get me into the race. Race day went south for me right away, I didn't start until 11:00 a.m., and it was 72 degrees without a cloud in the sky. My body shut down in the heat and hot sun, and I had to let my time goal melt away. But my goodness, it took me eight years to get there. Multiple marathons, Ironman triathlons, Trail Ultras, Stage Races, the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race, so many things happened in those eight years. Getting to Boston took me longer and more work than any other athletic achievement. There was no way I was going to let a "bad" clock time affect my experience. So I didn't. John and I had the most fun out on the course! We stopped for every photo opportunity we could. People dressed as bananas?! PHOTO!! Sexy police officers?!? PHOTO! Turning onto famous Hereford Street?!? PHOTO!! Miles and miles of high fives to the Wellesley girls and Boston College students. Pictures and hugs with my husband and parents. My face hurt at one point because I had been smiling so big for so long. RAW is full of amazing mentors and incredibly experienced Boston runners. Almost every single one of them told me to not race Boston, to just have fun and soak it up. But I was insistent on racing. My training was almost flawless. My weekly miles were higher than ever before and there wasn't a workout when I didn't hit my paces. I never got sick, I didn't get injured. I was ready. But that's the story, right? There's only so much you can control on race day, and weather is certainly not one of those things. But you can control your attitude. I thought of all those people from RAW who inspire me and helped me get to that starting line. I savored every high five. Every interaction with another runner. Every cramp and hobble and shuffling step. The journey is why we do it. The daily commitment to our dreams. The constant desire to be better than we were yesterday. To always knowing...tomorrow, we will try again.

Road Runners Club of America News By Kelly "K2" Richards, RRCA AtLarge Director Local RRCA clubs Plano Pacers and Rockwall Running Club competed in the Boston Marathon Team Titles at the 120th running of the Boston Marathon on April 18. Several RAW members joined one of the two local teams for the chance to be named fastest RRCA Team. Some team results can be found here. It's that time of year where RAW is seeking members to run for a board of directors position. To learn more about the responsibilities associated with being on the board of a running club, read "Managing a Running Club" in the Winter 2015/2016 issue of Inside Track. Fireman Ken finds a New Firehouse
A Fond Farewell Long time charter member "Fireman" Ken McInnes will be departing the DFW area on May 16 for Livingston, Montana, to start as fire chief June 1. Ken, a Canadian, has been yearning for colder climes for quite some time, and it appears as though he got his wish. The hard stuff is done, his home in Grapevine drew eight offers above asking price and sold in 38 hours. Among Ken's fondest RAW memories is sharing a van with some of RAWs very diverse personalities at two Hood to Coast races. Ken feels RAW enabled him to stay consistent as an athlete and has inspired him to stay active to the point of feeling guilty if he is not out there running or walking. His final thoughts: keep running and as country star Dan Seales sang "meet me in Montana." Ken, we'll miss you!
LGRAW Scholarship Madison Schumm, a RAW member since 2012, is the recipient of RAW's inaugural scholarship. The $2,000 scholarship was awarded to Madison through a selection process which reviewed her academic record, high school athletic performance, extracurricular activities, volunteer hours, two letters of recommendation, and a written essay. Madison is the daughter of club members Zach and Carol Schumm. In her short time as a club member, she has volunteered at aid stations, participated in trail clean ups, and has won an age group award at Double Trouble. Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers is proud to be investing in Madison's future. Please join us at the May Board Meeting on Monday, May 9, at the clubhouse, when we congratulate Madison on her achievements and present her with our scholarship award. Thank you to the RAW members who served on the Scholarship Selection Committee: Anne Barnwell, Kathryn Gleghorn, Doug Keeffe, Chris Morris, and Kat Sparks.
Trail Clean Up Thank you to all of the volunteers who picked up trash on the Horseshoe Trails on April 2. Altogether, 21 volunteers worked a total of 47 hours and collected 37 bags of trash. In addition to carrying out bags of garbage, the group also found larger pieces of lumber, Styrofoam, and other pieces even too large for volunteers to move. Thank you to everyone who gave their time to Keep Grapevine Beautiful.
