Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers November 2015 Dear Lake Grapevine, Our 16th Annual Double Trouble was endangered by the flooding of Lake Grapevine earlier in the year, but then the water receded and cleared the course for the race. Then came months of dry weather which brought the water down further. So the race was out of danger...or so we thought! Then on the week of the race, the weather forecast showed thunder, lightning and flooding conditions on race day. That caused a lot of worry for the race director, as well as probably lots of annoyance for anyone who would listen at packet pickup about all of the nightmare lightning scenarios. (Sorry about that, by the way.) Of course, it turned out to be a decent day for racing with just a little drizzle during the race. If you notice the race logo, you'll see the sun reflecting off of the flood waters. Maybe for next time, we'll know better than to tempt fate with our logo. Despite the weather worries, we had another recordbreaking turnout for the race we even had 10 people sign up at packetpickup and 19 on race day! The final tally was 686 participants, as compared to 664 last year. The best part was that despite all of the noshows for the race, all of the volunteers, vendors, and sponsors made it out to the race in the rainy conditions. Thank you to all of you for helping put on another incredibly successful race! If you have not already picked up your race shirt or a commemorative Double Trouble glass from Grapevine Craft Brewery, please stop by the clubhouse. There are lots of events coming up this month. There's the Rockledge Rumble on November 14, the Ultracentric Experience November 19 22 at Meadowmere Park, and then we go back to Rockledge Park for the AntiTurkey Trot on November 26. And don't forget to buy your tickets for the RAW Holiday Party on Friday, December 4, at the Palace Arts Theater. You should have received an email on the morning of Monday, October 26 with details on how to buy tickets. The deadline is Monday, November 30. By the way, you can find all of these events and many more on the LGRAW website's new Calendar of Events! This month also marked the Palo Duro Trail Run, a week before Double Trouble. Many RAW folks went out and ran or walked the 20K, 50K and 50mile races. Be sure to check out RAW Assistant Treasurer Belynda Warner's story below about her quest to set a new 50K PR at Palo Duro. As you read this, many of us will already be at the race site for the Dallas Running Club's 40th Annual DRC Half at Norbuck Park in Dallas. Yes, the website for the race is drchalf.com. That might also be the URL that a doctor with the last name Chalf would use, if there were such a person. (See my "testimonial" in last month's Footprint...or don't.) On that note, if you can do better than I can at humor (which is likely), please send your Footprint submissions along to pr@lgraw.com. Please note that this year marks the first time when we will not change our start time after Daylight Saving Time ends. We will keep our start time at 7:00 a.m. yearround. The RAW Board of Directors made this decision at our last meeting. If you would like to get more involved in the workings of the club, attending the 58th RRCA National Convention, just down the road in Dallas, is a great way to do it. If you commit to directing a club race or running for the RAW Board of Directors, the club will even consider reimbursing a portion of your convention fee. If you are interested, please contact me at president@lgraw.com, or we can discuss at the clubhouse. Don't miss In Step With below with Eileen Pontaoe. Not only does Eileen run and volunteer regularly with RAW, she also proofreads the Footprint each month. In fact, she probably read this paragraph before you did! It's nearly time for another RAW race! Registration is now open for the 18th Annual Bold in the Cold 5K & 15K. Hurry so you can get the best deal on registration!
Chris Morris, LGRAW President

Weekend workouts starting at 7 a.m. yearround Since RAW was founded, the start time for the weekend workouts has changed from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. in the weekend after Daylight Saving Time ends in the fall. Then it has changed back to 8:00 a.m. in the weekend after Daylight Saving Time begins in the spring. We noticed last spring that many of our members were starting their weekend workouts before our normal 8:00 a.m. group start. Due to race training and sometimes the desire to get finished earlier, fewer and fewer people were still around to start at the regular time. The club had changed the start time to 7:00 a.m. a little earlier than usual in the spring, and the RAW Board of Directors has also been discussing this issue for quite some time. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1122699895269&format=html&printFrame=true

The board again brought up the start time at our October meeting and the fact that many people are already running extra miles during the winter due to training requirements. We decided that we would change the start time to 7:00 a.m. yearround. Another added benefit is that the change typically allows members to socialize after the run for a longer period of time. We realize that the previous schedule had been in place for quite some time, and we did not take this decision lightly. If any members have questions about the change, please email any board member or catch them at the clubhouse. Board members' e mail addresses are on the LGRAW website here.
Giving Back to the Sport
Please help support Charleston memorial track meet David Ball Dear RAW Nation, I need your help! I have been called to help with the Sharonda Singleton Memorial Track Meet which originated from the murder of nine people at their Charleston, South Carolina, church in June. One victim, Sharonda Singleton, was a beloved, talented track coach at Goose Creek High School in Charleston who made a difference in hundreds of lives of young women through running. I have created the logo for the planned spring event, and the graphics and text for the GoFundMe page. Our challenge is updating this inner city school's equipment to state standards, resurfacing their track and acquiring a modern timing system. Recent floods in the South Carolina area also damaged the school. The track meet can't happen without this upgrade. Imagine the message it would send for TEXAS runners to reach out to Charleston, South Carolina, runners with love and support for their memorial track meet! Please consider donating even a small amount, as every dollar makes a statement of support! https://www.gofundme.com/pe62zx7y

Eileen Pontaoe: The plan to run into her 70s Are you a native Texan, or did you get here as soon as you could? No. Our family has been bouncing around the nation. Our most recent stop four years ago was New Jersey before we settled here at the Lonestar State. How long have you been running competitively? I have been running seriously since 2005, at least that was the year when I ran my first marathon. Running competitively? I shy away from that kind of running. That kind is just too hard. Tell us about your first Boston Marathon. I have not yet run the Boston Marathon. However, I made a special pact with a best friend, Belynda, that we will qualify for it when we That's Eileen flying high and obliging her new friend's are in our 70's when the field clears a little. On that glorious day, prerace warmup routine. we plan to wear the most girlie girl costumes and be insanely happy for each and every second of the race. We are even splurging by hiring our chiropractors and massage therapists (if they outlive us) to follow us along the course and fix us when necessary. Yes, we have planned that far ahead. What do you enjoy about running? I enjoy running when I am running with a friend or with a bunch of them. Running solo is mentally grueling as I get older. What's your favorite place to run? West side at Lake Grapevine and Central Park when we were still Northeasterners. What do you think is most important about your training for a race? Flexibility and willingness to adopt a training plan in response to unexpected events, commitments, illnesses, injuries or plain old daily challenges. In the past, I struggled with this a lot as in learning to just let go of those .314th of a mile or miles or "phantom miles" (missed workouts) that the Garmin didn't seem to record. I've been learning to shift blame on the GPS. Do you have any running advice or insight for others? I've been told many times that the marathon starts at Mile 20. Over the years, I have experienced this and realized that by Mile 20 (or even way before that for me), that a marathon is supposed to be difficult. For every marathon, I have to convince my brain to fully accept the fact that it is supposed to hurt, to move on and not give up. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1122699895269&format=html&printFrame=true

FOOTPRINT November 2015
What is your favorite running memory? The first time I met the runner who holds the Guinness Book of World Records for the most marathons run in one year. I think he holds this title for three different years. In one of the years, he ran between 3540 marathons. As of July of this year, he had run a total of 1500 marathons. He is 70 years old. What I remembered most from meeting him was that he is kind, humble and so normal. I hope to be so lucky to live as long and with the same tenacity and grace. What do you do in your life outside the club? I have my two kiddos, ages 14 and 12, demanding me to "DO" a lot for them. Professionally? Well, for my second career, I love being a parttime pastry chef for this cute little French bakery in Dallas. Come visit. What's something about you that would surprise us? Not really sure about this question. Is it surprising that over the past couple of months, I've developed a serious addiction to sparkling water? Or that I'm learning how to quilt? My best friend Carol who is an artisan extraordinaire and prizewinning quilter has been patiently teaching me different quilting styles while constantly watching that I do not get my fingers stuck in the sewing machine. Any other comments? Tell your friends to join RAW. It's a fun group. I wouldn't be running as much, if I didn't have them.
Race Recommendations
A runner's list of races: Classic, popular races you must do or at least consider Kathryn Gleghorn A friend who has the end in sight for her 50 States Marathon quest, recently asked me what "big" races she should do around the country that are not marathon distance. She's a planner, and although she won't complete her 50 States until 2018, I love that she's already looking ahead to having more fun with her running. I'm a lifelong runner who subscribed to "The Runner" before it became "Runner's World" in 1987, and it's in these magazines where I've read about these classic races and have kept them on my radar as "races I'd like to run." So let's take a look at these destination races I'd like to do, and maybe we'll toe the starting line together in the future. "Bay to Breakers" in San Francisco, is an obvious choice. I ran this in 2002. It's no wonder so many people leave their hearts in San Francisco, as this city is so much fun! There's so much going on during the race from the salmon runners who run the Bay to Breakers course running/swimming upstream, the occasional naked runner, and tiki bars offering beverages on the course, that the hilly streets of San Fran don't even bother you! Atlanta's Fourth of July Peachtree 10K is another memorable run. I ran it in 1998, the year Khalid Khannouchi won it 27:47, and I finished somewhere amongst the other 55,000 participants. I haven't run the Capital 10K in Austin in almost 20 years, but when I lived in the Hill Country, it was a perennial springtime favorite race, and the one every Texas runner should do at least once. For a couple of years, one of my running partners was a friend who had relocated from North Carolina, and their local running club had a group that traveled down to Charleston, South Carolina for the Cooper River Bridge Run. I was fortunate enough to run this race three times once in the pouring rain! And one time the comedian Bill Murray was the "Starter." It's another 10K with a great party atmosphere...rain or shine! There are two "mustdo" races that were founded by former Olympians. I've run the Lilac Bloomsday Run in Spokane, Washington. It's a challenging 12K race that was founded by Olympian Don Kardong and has about 50,000 participants. I hope to run Joan Benoit Samuelson's beloved Beach to Beacon in Maine next August. This race is capped at 6,000, so wish me luck on getting registered! Of course, you'll want to run the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in D.C. in April! A trip to our nation's capital and the opportunity to see the cherry trees in bloom could only make for another memorable race! I was in DC back in 2013 and had already picked up my race packet, but I came down with a case food poisoning, so sadly, I need a Cherry Blossom DoOver! While I've been fortunate to run several of the "big" races, there are still several more I'd like to do. The races mentioned above and others on my short, but growing list are included here: http://www.atlantatrackclub.org/2015peachtree http://www.bolderboulder.com/mobile/index.html http://www.cap10k.com/ http://zapposbaytobreakers.com/ http://www.beach2beacon.org/ http://www.boilermaker.com/ http://bridgerun.com/ http://www.ccc10k.com/ http://www.falmouthroadrace.com/ http://www.bloomsdayrun.org/ http://www.cherryblossom.org https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1122699895269&format=html&printFrame=true

Race Report
A little help is all it takes to get it done Belynda Warner They say you get by with a little help from your friends, and where is that more true than in running? If you are reading this, you are probably a member of RAW, and you are probably a member because you have discovered the value of having running friends. Or else you like beer in the morning, but that's a topic for a different article. Anyway, who other than a running buddy is going to hold you accountable for your 5:00AM wakeup call, slog through the hard miles of a hot and humid training run, or hold your stuff while you dash to a porta potty? Who else is going to convince you that yes, you can and should sign up for that dream race that you think is out of your league? And who, for goodness sake, is going to tell you your shorts are a little too threadbare, or the elastic in your running bra is no longer doing its job? Only a run bud. I have incredible running friends. They've done all of the above for me. They've listened to my fears, ponderings, and poop stories, and shared theirs with me. They've celebrated my successes and allowed me to be part of their own. And they've put up with me through my highs and lows, while fully expecting me to reciprocate and I am happy to do so. And that brings me to the story I want to tell you about my experience at the Palo Duro Trail Run. In 2014, I ran the 50K with (who else) my running friends Kat Sparks and Eileen Pontaoe. I had so much fun and finished so happily, that I decided to do it again. I entered the 2015 50K and trained as best I could with minimal access to trails, thanks to Grapevine's Great Flood of 2015. As I prepared for the race, I realized I was pretty much alone in my endeavor even though about 40 RAW folks participated in Palo Duro events this year, only a handful of us ran the 50K. Jon Korte and Russ Wedemeyer are runners so far out of my league, I may as well have been on my own. But I had a goal of bettering my 2014 finish time, and I had friends who believed in me, so when the 50K and 50 mile races began at 7:00AM, I was off. I ran the first sixmile loop just below my goal pace and felt great. I ran the second loop (12.5 miles) right on target and entered the RAW campsite feeling confident that I would blow my PR out of the water. My RAW running friends jumped up to help me get back out there for loop three filled my water bottle, rubbed down my hamstrings, toweled me off, drenched me in sunscreen, restocked my belt with Gu and handed me snacks. Then they cheered me as they pushed me back to the course. While I made a quick portapotty stop, Kat got me what I needed from the aid station and then walked me a good quarter mile into the third loop. She promised to meet me on the course for my final few miles, and we set a meeting time that I was certain I would meet. As she turned to head back to camp, I jogged away, happy and confident. A friend I'd made on the course caught up to me and then passed me, and I didn't mind. I picked off one runner ahead, and then another, and then set my eyes on the guy in the kilt. But all of a sudden, it was very hot. My watch beeped, signaling a mile marker and my pace was way off. And I ran out of water with two miles to the next aid station. My throat was dry, my body was hot, and the guy in the kilt was nowhere to be seen. My confidence waned and my spirits fell, and I plodded along disheartened to the aid station that seemed to have been moved further and further away as my miles were getting slower and slower. Somehow I caught my new friend just before the aid station, and we both had a Thank You Jesus moment before refilling and heading back out. He'd been playing music with the plan of relying on 80's rock to get him through the last 10 miles. Those miles were upon us, so I asked how it was working, and he said not well. That worried me, but off I went without him, up the hill that wouldn't end, my miles still slow. I couldn't get back on pace. I had only three thoughts in my head for the next 6 miles: "Oh my God I am going to die," "What the actual f*ck," and "Just make it to Kat." It took hours and hours and hours, days, weeks, months, and years to make it to Kat. And when I finally saw her and her sweet sister Tina twenty minutes later than I'd planned, did I run and hug her? Smile with joy at her? Thank her for coming out for me? No. I asked her what would happen if I didn't get a PR. I must have confused her because her smile disappeared, but she matter of factly assured me that nothing would happen, I'd still finish my second ultra, and that would be enough. I asked if she thought she could get me to the finish line with a PR, and she said she thought she could. So I happily trusted her and took off behind her, cheerily floating along on cloud nine. For about four seconds. Then I decided I didn't care about a PR. Then I did. Then I hated everyone and everything. Then I cussed. Then I walked. Then I ran (sort of). Then I hyperventilated. I pushed back tears. I yelled and whined and complained with everything I had in me. And Kat took everything I dished out in stride. How she came up with responses to my nonsense, I have no idea. I loved and hated her wit and wisdom at the same time. I imagine Tina behind me was quietly questioning her sister's choice of friends as Kat gave me clear, concise, easy to follow instructions like "take a deep breath and run three steps." And so we went, for the next half hour, Kat calmly encouraging the exhausted, beat up, overheated, raging bull headed runner I had become, all the way to the finish. As I rounded the corner to pass the RAW camp on the way to the finish, Kat quietly stepped aside to let me have my moment of glory, but never stopped urging me to the finish until I was safely on the other side of the line with my new personal record secured. After the finish, I soaked up all the love and attention from the race director, volunteers, and my RAW friends who waited for me for hours (literally, hours) after their finishes, but I knew I would not have succeeded without Kat. And therein lies the value of a running friend, willing to suffer through the trenches with you and then let you have the glory. I hope one day I get the opportunity to pay it forward.

Police Memorial dedicated at 9/11 Memorial Plaza Belynda Warner On Thursday, October 22, representatives from the City of Grapevine Police Department, Fire Department, City Council, and several other agencies were on hand at the 9/11 Memorial Plaza for the dedication of the Law Enforcement Memorial. The Law Enforcement Memorial is the third and final sculpture honoring flight crew, firefighters, and law enforcement officers lost in the line of duty at the World Trade Center attack in New York City on 9/11/01. During the dedication ceremony, RAW members Chris Reyher and Joe Luccioni spoke alongside Mayor William D Tate and Police Chief Eddie Salame. Mayor Tate related biblical scripture to the heroism displayed on 9/11, while Chief Salame commemorated the lives of the 71 law enforcement officers lost that day. Joe Luccioni thanked various agencies, donors, and Mona Q. Burk photo supporters of the project, which he has been leading for the past 12 years. Other RAW members who served with Joe and Chris on the 9/11 Memorial board include Michael Bassano, John Bush, and Jon Korte. Several RAW members have contributed individually to the fundraising efforts led by the 9/11 foundation, and a few were on hand for the moving dedication, including David Ball, who sang the national anthem.

FOOTPRINT November 2015
have the the most unique run: The Anti Turkey Trot. It's a tradition just like every year, it will not be run on Thursday, November 26 at 7 AM at Rockledge Park, and no distance will be specified because there isn't really a race.
Every Christmas season, the Grapevine Police Department collects toys to give to underprivileged children in the area. This year, as always, LGRAW will have a toy collection bin in the clubhouse starting on November 1. There will also be a collection bin at the Anti Turkey Trot. Please join us in donating new, unwrapped toys appropriate for ages 017 during the month of November. If you would like more information about the toy program on when you can "shop" for gifts and wrap them for the children or how you can further volunteer with the program, check the Santa Cops website. It's a lot of fun, and a great way to give back to the police department for looking out for us all year long.
Volunteer Opportunity
There will be no entry fee nor awards since there isn't a race! Even though no one will be there to partake, you'll want to bring goodies to share. If the event was happening, you'd find a Santa Cops donation bin, so you'll want to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to the Santa Cops program. Hope not to to see you there, running or walking any distance you choose on the beautiful, reopened North Shore Trail, and/or socializing with your friends before your Thanksgiving Day plans begin.
