Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers October 2016 Dear Lake Grapevine This is the month for lots of excitement at LGRAW! We have a double header of RAW Off to the Races events on October 15 and 16, with Palo Duro Trail Run on Saturday and the IMT Des Moines Marathon on Sunday. Kelly "K2" Richards says it's weird to get all this attention for completing her 50th state marathon in Des Moines, so I won't mention it. October is also the month for LGRAW's Double Trouble 5K & 10K on Saturday the 22nd. You can register to run or walk the RRCA State Championship 5K, the 10K, or both, and/or you can sign up to volunteer. There are plenty of volunteer positions which also allow you to compete in the races. Our RAWsome volunteers are the reason that LGRAW races are among the most fun in the Metroplex! Big thanks go to Tom and Kim Shetina for hosting the RAW Luau, "Jersey" Mike Bassano for suggesting and coordinating the Backwards Mile, Imelda Douglas for serving as the yogi at ROGA, and the RAW 20th Anniversary Committee for all of their wellattended events! There's another one on Thursday, October 20 to give Double Trouble volunteers a chance to have a social run of their own. Details are below. We're in the home stretch now on training for fall races, and lots of people are already getting in their long runs on the weekends. There are folks starting at 5:00 or 6:00 a.m. before the regular club run at 7:00 a.m. nearly every Saturday and Sunday, so if you want some company for your high mileage days, come on out there's bound to be someone to join you. See you at the lake! Chris Morris LGRAW President president@lgraw.com
In Memory
Peggy Reyher RAW members remember Peggy, wife of charter member, Chris Reyher, who together with her husband, has given a great deal to the club throughout the years. After her passing, Chris shared the following on Facebook: The sweet lady that I have loved since we were 17 years old has passed away. Double Trouble is Almost Here!
It is hard to believe that our 17th Annual Double Trouble race is this month on Saturday, October 22. We still need to do more in promoting the race to make it the best one yet, so please take some flyers and give them to your friends. Of course, no race is complete without the awesome volunteers, and our club has the best volunteers around. Please sign up for your spot on the RunSignUp page or through the captains for each position. All volunteers will get a race day tshirt, so please make sure that you provide your shirt size on RunSignUp, email to dt@lgraw.com, or give them to your captains, so that they can pass them along to me. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1125761269518&format=html&print=true

20th Anniversary Celebration in October
Fun Run The October installment of our yearlong 20th anniversary celebration will be a fun run starting and ending at the clubhouse. Run whatever distance you want. We will even have maps of the Double Trouble course available. Either get a preview for your race or get your run in on Thursday night and instead volunteer on race day. The event will take place on the 20th of the month, just like every month throughout the year. Snacks will be provided. BYOB. RSVP on the Facebook event. The event will begin at 6 p.m.
Third Tuesday of the Month Social Run Social Run at Grapevine Craft Brewery LGRAW will hold the next installment of our 5K social run/walk starting and ending at Grapevine Craft Brewery at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18. Grapevine Craft Brewery hosts a Trivia Night that starts after most have finished the run, and a food truck will be on site to purchase food. The event is open to everyone you do not have to be a member of LGRAW, and is a great opportunity to invite friends to meet your fellow RAW members. Let us know you're coming and RSVP through the Facebook event.
20 Fun & Fascinating Facts about RAW By Kelly "K2" Richards 1. RAW's first Half Marathon was held in June 1998. It was the Grace Race June 5K & HalfMarathon. In 1999, the name changed to Lake Grapevine Half Marathon & 5K. In 2000, the race was discontinued. 2. The Best Foot Forward (BFF), considered RAW's highest honor, was created in 2000 by thenpresident Eileen Fontaine and awarded to Tom Byno. For years,Tom was a club mainstay, and many members remember him as the first person they met at RAW. Note: Tom spends most of his time in FL now. The run was Terry Marcott's idea, and the first year it snowed big giant flakes. People were making snow angels and throwing snow balls. Everyone laughed harder than they ran. 4. RAW member Dana Bullard was the female winner of the 2001 Dallas White Rock Marathon in 2:59:00. Dana had intended to drop out at mile 20. She felt so good she continued to run and left her husband to scramble to the finish line from the corner where he was waiting to pick her up after the long "training" run. 5. The 2004 Bold in the Cold Coffee Mug won the Gold Award for Best Finisher's Item from Runner Triathlete News. 6. RAW's first budget committee was formed in 2004 for the 2005 fiscal year. Prior to 2009 when the club purchased an IPICO Sports Race Timing System, stop watches with little printers (picture a calculator tape) were used to capture times that were then matched up to bib tags that had been pulled off racer's bibs and strung on finishing line. Really! Jeff "Barney" Barnhart, Mike Evans, and K2 served on a research committee to source the timing system. A generous donation from Kathryn and Bruce Gleghorn was used to partially fund the timing system. 11. The FOOTPRINT previously featured a column called RAW for Life Fitness Careers, Heath Issues and Training Tips for the 60+ Athlete. It was penned by member Pat Noell. 12. RAW Yogi Eileen Pontaoe
Certified yoga instructor and RAW Member, Imelda Douglas
Downward facing dog, rag doll, side plank, chaturanga...these are just a few of the yoga poses, Mel Douglas led the RAW yogis through last month. RAW's first foray into ROGA, or Post run/walk yoga, was a well attended event. Mel, a certified yoga instructor and club member, showcased yoga poses beneficial to runners. Other than a few postworkout calf and toe cramps, the RAW yogis enjoyed their time on the mat and experienced the benefits of yoga. ROGA was originally scheduled as part of our yearlong 20th anniversary celebration, but had to be rescheduled due to stormy weather in August. RAW@GCB: 20th Anniversary Celebration
No Celebration is complete without cake Member Erin McCarthy wins big! It was a hot and muggy night, but that didn't keep RAW members from showing up to our monthly 20th Anniversary celebration. The September installment of our yearlong celebration was held in conjunction with the popular Third Tuesday of the Month Social Run at Grapevine Craft Brewery. As usual, some members and friends showed up for the social run, while others came for just the social. Either way, we had a blast. Charter members, new members, soontobe members, and friends enjoyed snacks and beer while playing our RAW Getting to Know You BINGO game. Each player had a game card with 20 criteria such as "Has run an ultra," "Has won a race," and "Is a member of another running club." By talking with others, players filled in their card and got to know each other. Playing the game, we learned that we are a talented bunch. Several players have won races! Contestants struggled to find other players that have never raced before, but we did find many who were coerced, tricked or bribed into racing. We also learned that Jack Hase qualified for almost all of the criteria. Following the game, we enjoyed celebration cake and door prizes. Five BINGO winners won free beer tokens, and Erin McCarthy won $20 for being the 20th member to arrive to the celebration. Will you be at the October celebration? If so, you just may go home $20 richer, and you will certainly have a good time!

This was LGRAW's first attempt at a Backwards Mile, but it turned out to be a fun time. And no one got hurt, so it was an added bonus! Unless you count the soreness in the muscles that people don't usually use to run. It's hard to do this event justice with photos, so be sure to check out the videos on the Facebook Event page, especially the winning performances by Brad Liles and Michelle "Drum" Blackard. Thanks to everyone who came out for what will surely become an LGRAW tradition!
Flashback: RAW Shooting Stars, Terry Marcott Editor's Note: As part of the 20th Anniversary, we are posting past articles each month. This article, written by Kelly "K2" Richards, was originally posted in the May 2012 Footprint issue. It was part of a series, highlighting some of our most elite runners within RAW. Terry Marcott is a charter RAW member who has run hundreds of races, winning over 100 of them in distances ranging from 5K to 50 miles. His marathon personal record (PR) is faster than any other RAW member in our club's 15year history. His time that October day placed him ahead of America's sweetheart Olympic Marathon gold medalist. He is one of the fiercest competitors I've ever known, yet you won't hear him bragging. He doesn't need to because his accomplishments stand on their own. Just make sure you know his marathon PR before you give him advice. You've won over 100 road races in distances from 5K to 50 Miles. Does one win stand out as being especially memorable? I believe that each win at the longer distances brought both relief and extreme satisfaction. My only marathon win, the 1996 Louisville Marathon, was especially rewarding. I spent https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1125761269518&format=html&print=true

the last mile looking back and wondering if this was really happening. The marathon always brings talented runners and on this particular day I was able to stand on the middle podium, what a nice feeling. Tell us about your high school running experience. I ran cross country and track in high school. My first trophy is still my favorite, when I placed 5th overall in our conference that year. I went on to finish 2nd a couple of years later, only to beat the winner the next week. Cross country was always much more challenging for me because the runners were always thinking and calculating a next move. What are your PRs? * 5K: 15:29 * 10K: 32:50 * Half: 1:13:35 * Marathon: 2:36:58 * 50K: 3:33:00 * 50 Mile: 7:10:20 What do you consider your biggest running achievement? While most would want a time and mile, I actually consider that I won a road race each year for twenty years in a row a good lifetime achievement. During your marathon PR race at Chicago in '94, you ended up running with Joan Benoit Samuelson, who is the first ever women's marathon Olympic Gold Medalist and former world record holder in the marathon. Tell us about it. It began near the 20 or 21mile mark. There was a short outandback and you could see those in front of you. It was then I realized that I was near the world record holder. This inspiration helped me pick up the pace and ultimately catch Joan near the 22mile mark. While I usually had a strong finish in most marathons, this day was special. A very focused, but friendly Joan, had words of encouragement which helped me close this day with a personal record and break a barrier which stands for me today. My time was 2:36:58. I am more impressed with the finish I had that day, one with lifelong memories. But finishing near an Olympic Gold Medalist, former women's world record holder, and just an overall great ambassador to our sport, was enough for me. (Interviewer's note: Terry beat Joan Benoit Samuelson by 10 seconds that day! The information that had to be pried out of him!) Have you ever met, run with or been inspired by a famous runner (beside Joanie at Chicago)? I have met and shaken hands with a few great ones, but my inspiration always came from my training buddies. Bill Deckard, Norman Bluebaum, Jeff Roth, Larry Moffatt, Don Nelson, Stan Ujka, Craig Minyard and Byron Benoit, to name a few, gave inspiration continuously. Here were guys ready to work their hearts out in order to improve. I have always felt that I received energy from those around me. You're a retired Command Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army. While serving in Iraq you participated in a race. Tell us what it was like to run in those conditions. It was the 2007 AT&T Austin Marathon and Half Marathon mirror run simply named the Baghdad Marathon and Half Marathon. I ran the half in 1:33:50. Stretches of the race course included roads that a year before were considered the most dangerous in the world, yet that day I was running down them. During the run, I reflected on my initial fears of all the unknowns of those first weeks upon arrival. I was much more comfortable with my surroundings now, but still vigilant. Approximately 160 runners participated in the two distances. My time was slower, but spirit high, as American and Iraqis alike ran side by side. As a selfproclaimed "old school" runner, what do you miss about the old days of https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1125761269518&format=html&print=true

running / racing and what do you like most about today's running scene? I truly miss the old days where I would go out and hammer sixminute miles in twentymile training runs. But I most miss racing and the fellowship that followed. Today, my running scene is more relaxed and far less demanding. I enjoy watching younger runners emerge who will be leaders in the future. You're a Charter RAW member, past board member, race director and you've served on multiple RAW committees. Regardless of where I live, I would like to remain involved in running or walking. I especially enjoy sharing that passion with others. This helps me to remain engaged and keeps others involved as well. Just last week I was in Nashville, Tennessee, for a trade show. While there, I met a runner from Grapevine who was not involved with RAW. Obviously, I saw this as an opportunity to bring more to our club. We all get the chance to ambassador; I can only hope that I can do it justice. Do you have a RAW / running nickname? Uh oh, maybe it can be shared with me. I don't know that I have one. One day at the clubhouse, someone who clearly didn't know your running history was giving you some advice. Your response has become legendary and is often jokingly used around the clubhouse as good ol' smack talk when someone can't "win" the topic he/she is discussing. What did you say? Let me finally get my side of this story told. A wellmeaning runner was engaging me with advice on how to improve. I don't know at this point if it was before or after my workout, but it was early in the morning. I always worked very hard and knew all the diet, sleep and caloric intake information. This guy did not deserve the question, but my patience gave up and I interrupted him to ask the question, "What is your marathon PR?" Then word spread quickly due to my good friend Byron and the rest is history. To the best of our knowledge, you have the best marathon time for any RAW member ever. In your opinion what will it take for someone to improve on your time? I cannot verify whether my PR is a club PR as well, but it certainly would be top five for sure. What it takes requires a healthy dose of genetics, good combination of muscle fibers, VO2 max of 68, proper training and much confidence in yourself. As many of us know, the marathon begins at 20 miles and you must face the demons with counterattacks. These counterattacks include past experiences which lift you through the exhaustive fight and help you travel through the fear door. Someone who can do that will confidently execute a wellprepared training plan. Would you consider yourself to be (or have been) a mentor to anyone specific? This list is long which stretches to the late 80s when I began to coach younger high school kids in Indiana. I saw myself more of an extension to their coaches at school. Two kids from a town of three thousand where I lived went to state in the mile and two mile. It is an amazing feeling to take fearless kids and provide them with structure and help them believe that they can do things unreachable by themselves. One day I would like to return to high school coaching and develop abilities, but, more importantly, launch young adults into society with the confidence and maturity to make a difference.
Idaho/Montana Double Marathon Weekend by Thomas "T.O." Okazaki The Salmon/Bozeman marathons have been scheduled on the same weekend for quite some time now. I discovered this fact many years ago in the 50 State Club newsletter. If the drive was 5 hours or less between marathons, usually these popular double combos would be recommended and listed there. https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1125761269518&format=html&print=true

Because I needed both Idaho and Montana for my quest to run a marathon in all 50 states, Pamela, my wife, suggested we try doing these two races together on the same weekend and then visit Yellowstone National Park on the way back. So we flew into Salt Lake City and used a rental car to travel to Salmon, Idaho first and then Bozeman, Montana. We were blessed with cool weather for both events with the low of 40F at the start. The snow only started once we got to Yellowstone National Park on Monday. Salmon Marathon: A Little Marathon That Did All The Small Things Right Packet pick up was inside a small town library. Runners were bussed to the start which was located at a tiny rural elementary school. We were given our timing chips there. This is the first time I have seen one ever attached to a wrist band. I was very impressed by all the different outofstate marathon racing shirts that I saw runners wearing at the start. The course was on a wide, scenic, gravel road, with little vehicular traffic, winding thru a scenic valley, surrounded by mountains, passing thru farmlands, pastures and sparkling brooks. Each aid station had Gu available, and there was a porta potty every 2 miles. The finish was at a small park near the center part of town, not far away from the shuttle bus parking, with a nice permanent bathroom for those who wanted to change. Great food at the finish included chocolate milk; especially important to start refueling right away for the marathon the next day! All finishers were given a salmon medal, and both my wife and I really loved the long sleeve tech race shirt that was included in the race packet. Bozeman Marathon: A Scenic Tour of "The Big Sky Country" Bozeman is a quiet small college town home to Montana State. Our drive to Bozeman took us across the rugged and scenic Continental Divide not far from Lewis and Clark's Lost Trail. We were able to do a race morning packet pickup at the Bozemen Running Store, conveniently located near the shuttle bus pickup. This time, runners were dropped off at the side of a mountain road. The race director was kind enough to order one bus be kept parked at the start to help keep runners warm and protected from the wind. We saw many familiar faces from the Salmon Marathon. The course zigged and zagged back to Bozeman thru some rolling hills, covered with small forests and farms. Even though some of the country roads had traffic cones, it was still helpful to wear something bright, so that drivers could better see you. It was a nice downhill finish into downtown Bozeman. There were plenty of small cafes and restaurants nearby to refuel along with small shops to buy souvenirs. We really liked the sharp looking race shirt and cattle finisher medal for all the marathoners. Although we enjoyed both marathons very much, my wife and I would have to give the Salmon Marathon a slight edge. It really was a little gem of a race with a small town appeal . If you have never traveled to the great northwest, put these races on your calendar! It would be well worth your while.
