Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers September 2015 Dear Lake Grapevine, With the receding flood waters, our East course is now completely open, and the West course is nearly there. The section near the 3/4 mile mark is now above water, and the part at Kimball and Lakeridge near the usual second water stop is getting closer every week. Of course that means the entire race course is now open, in plenty of time for LGRAW's 16th Annual Double Trouble on Saturday, October 24, 2015. We have now confirmed that Grapevine Craft Brewery will be serving beer after the race and providing 5K and 10K finishers with a commemorative glass. We have also partnered with Your Sporting Image to provide all participants with free downloads of their race photos. Of course we will need lots of volunteers to support the race. Many of these volunteer positions are available even to people who are running or walking the race. Whether you compete, volunteer, or both, don't miss it! As the roads have cleared, so have the trails on the West course. They are nearly 100% above water now. The Wednesday and Friday trail runs will now resume, starting at 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. Come out and enjoy a nice change of pace. There are plenty of events coming up this month, including the RAW Luau on Saturday, September 5th. Come out and enjoy food, beer, and drinks! The event is family friendly, so bring the whole crew along. Tuesday, September 15th will be our club's first "Third Tuesday of the Month Social Run," in conjunction with Grapevine Craft Brewery. Enjoy a run with the group, and hang out afterwards and relax in the taproom or beer garden. And don't forget RRCA's Run@Work Day and Run@School Day on Friday, September 18th. We will be hosting an event at the clubhouse for anyone who is retired, works at home, or just wants an excuse to go out. Details on all of these events are below. Of course fall racing season will be here before we know it. That means we will have lots of people putting in extra training miles for marathons and half marathons. There are often groups starting 30 minutes, one hour, and sometimes up to two hours before the regular 7 a.m. start time on the weekends. Feel free to put your own group together, or just ask, if you can tag along with others who show up. We want to extend a warm welcome to all of the new folks who have joined the club over the past few months. We're so happy to have you! See you at the lake! Chris Morris, LGRAW President

RAGBRAI Photos
Iowa bike ride is the perfect event for RAW food, beer, exercise and fun Kat Sparks RAGBRAI, (The Des Moines) Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, marked its 43rd year in July 2015. The ride always seems to attract a lot of RAW members, both former Iowans and those who are convinced to go along for the party. We started the ride by dipping our back tires in the Missouri River in Sioux City, Iowa, and rode seven days and 530 miles through a thunderstorm and two fights that almost caused us to break up. The ride was fueled by pork chops, ice cream, pancakes and beer. No shot blocks or GU were needed for this event. We finished by dipping our front tires in the Mississippi River in Davenport, Iowa.
An Iowa "Cornapotty." As you can see, the facilities were all lavish.

Walk to End Alzheimer's Saturday, October 10
Donate or walk to bring us closer to finding a cure for Alzheimer's Ray Harris Get involved! Your help is needed. Do you know how many Americans currently are suffering with Alzheimer's? 500,000? 1,000,000? 5,000,000? The answer is 5,000,000. I'm pretty sure you have a loved one or know of someone who is suffering with this awful disease. And currently, there is no cure. You might know that last year I was the honorary chairperson for the "Walk to End Alzheimer's" held in Grapevine at Meadowmere Park. This year another LGRAW member, Ed Folliard, is serving in that capacity. We're both so committed to finding a cure because our mothers suffered and passed away because of Alzheimer's. Ray Harris with his mother on her birthday in 2009 before she passed away as a result of Alzheimer's in 2011. We're asking that LGRAW members join us in this fight. On Saturday, October 10, we will be walking again to raise funds to provide dollars for research and for the programs that the Alzheimer's Association provides to those suffering and to the loved ones that care for them. Although these programs aren't free, there is no charge to the people receiving these services. There are a couple of ways you can participate: One, join the LGRAW team that will be walking on October 10, and raising funds. You can do that by going here to register. Two, go to my walk webpage and make a donation. Please give this some serious consideration. Your involvement would go a long way to finding a cure for Alzheimer's, and LGRAW members know how to go a long way. If you have any questions or need additional information, do not hesitate to contact me by email, at 9723425955 or when I'm at the clubhouse some weekend.
Race Director Assistants
Would you like to direct a race but not sure about taking the leap? If you have thought about volunteering to be a race director but are concerned that it's too hard or might take too much time, then worry no more and reconsider because now is your chance! The race director for Double Trouble and Bold in the Cold (both Chris Morris) has generously offered to mentor prospective race directors on what is required to put on a RAW race. You will have the opportunity to shadow the race director and assist throughout the race planning and execution process, so that you will feel comfortable and ready to take the reins the next time. The race director is responsible for creating a race budget, choosing giveaways and prizes, enlisting sponsors, administering race signups and promoting the race. The race director may delegate many of these tasks to others, but is ultimately responsible for the successful execution of the race. Our RAWsome and experienced volunteers are a great asset in making sure things go off according to plan. If you would prefer more formalized training in preparation for being a race director in the future, you can enroll in Road Runners Club of America's Race Director Certification Course. Partial reimbursement may be available from LGRAW, if you commit to directing a race after completing the course. If you are interested in learning more, please contact us.
