Giving Back to the Sport GBBTS | Giving Back to the Sport... Byron Benoit

You've seen him. He's everywhere. You can't miss that great big smile, bald head, and the Louisiana accent. Byron Benoit is always around when a runner needs him most. He's present at most races... even when he's not even running. Byron has a way of showing up just when runners are low on energy, electrolytes and confidence, and he's always got the anecdote. Maybe a runner needs some words of encouragement; maybe they need an extra boost of confidence, or maybe it's just a silly joke that will get them through the next few miles. Whatever it is, Byron has the knack for finding what it will take to help a runner to finish a race. Byron gives some of the best advice, and he will run with others just to see them achieve their goals. He has paced several RAW members to finish races and even PR. He selflessly gives up so much of his free time to help his fellow RAW members. Not only can he be seen at local races, but Byron is a regular on road trip races. He has run with Chris Barnwell during his Grand Slam finish; been a Sherpa for those competing in an Ironman; and been part of a support crew for several crazy runners running well into the night. Byron is always welcome whether at a far away race or right in our backyard at Double Trouble or Bold in the Cold. His "million-dollar" smile and goof-ball humor are just the things that can keep a runner moving forward. Thank you, Byron, for giving RAW your generous and up-beat spirit to help us be our best. Would you like to nominate someone to be featured for Giving Back or In Step With? Send us an email!

Thank You Thank you Wounded Warrior Aid Station Volunteers!

By Eileen Pontaoe A shout of praise and gratitude for the merry troop of LGRAW men and women who volunteered for the Wounded Warrior Half Marathon and 10k held on June 8, 2014. The group organized the best tasting water and the happiest aid station in the whole race under the gentle but firm guidance of the fearless captain Joe Luccioni. Impending storms which delayed the start of the race did not dampen the gang's energy, fueled I think, by the extra sweet sports drink they were serving (and drinking) and the hot and gooey breakfast burritos. Notably missing were the cold and strong mimosas, ah... maybe next time. As the race proceeded, our troops' excitement increased as runners gratefully took the drinks and were appreciative of us and our morning hours devoted to service of our fellow runners. We feel really good about that!

(L-R) Stacy Marchiori, Eileen Pontaoe, Steve Olson, Imelda Douglas, Jesse Daenz, and the Studebakerilla (John Studebaker) were just a few of the dozens of RAW volunteers serving runners!

RAW Around Town... and Beyond!

Andrew Waguespack and Robin Waguespack both placed in their age groups at the Colleyville Lions Club 17th Annual xSIGHTment Run 5K. RAW always does well at this local race, and these two celebrated family-style. Congratulations Andrew on another top notch performance, and Robin on her first age group award!

Many RAW runners participated in the "First ever T-Rex 10Mile Trail Run" on June 21 at Trophy Club Park. Here, Ray Harris, Kat Sparks, Bob Fowler, and Jack Hase listen to final instructions before setting off on this free, timed event. The reviews were great, and RAW performed well despite hot, humid, challenging conditions. Organizer Richard Senelly was pleased with the RAW turn-out and promises more free events to come.

Debby Eads placed third in her age group; Laurie Lukanich took Overall Grand Master Female. Not pictured, Jim Lukanich, who won Overall Grand Master Male.

RRCA Runnings

Suann Lundsberg, Kelly Richards, Paulette Odenthal, and Stacie Fey were just a few of the RAW runners at the Bighorn Mountain Wild and Scenic Trail Run. RAW was represented in every distance from the 30K to the 100 Mile at this tough Wyoming race.

By Kelly "K2" Richards, RRCA Director-at-Large This year, I've done more racing than is usual for me. I've raced distances from a road mile in Little Rock, AR to a mountain 50K in Big Horn, WY. Each was a unique experience but all reminded me of how fantastic it is when the running community comes together. I loved volunteering at the RRCA National One Mile Championship, the go! Running! go! Mile and the gathering of friends from around the country at the Dexter-Ann Arbor Run, the RRCA National HalfMarathon Championship on June 1. The next RRCA Texas State Championship race is local favorite FWRC Labor Day 15K. I encourage you to participate as a racer or volunteer. Whenever choosing a race, locally or across the nation, be sure to follow these buyer beware tips. Fourteen up-and-coming distance runners, who have recently graduated from colleges and universities throughout the country, have been selected to attend the 3rd RunPro Camp. The 2014 camp, hosted by the RRCA, will be held in Arlington, Virginia, July 17-19. RunPro Camp is designed specifically for athletes who are interested in pursuing a professional running career. September 19, 2014, the Road Runners Club of America will promote the 9th Annual RUN@WORK Day and the 3rd Annual RUN@School Day, nationwide fitness efforts. The goal of RUN@WORK Day and RUN@School Day is to encourage adults and children to get 30 minutes of exercise each day, in accordance with the  Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, either before work/school, during lunch, or immediately following work/school. It's not too early to start planning and promoting these efforts with your company, employer or local school. Connect with the RRCA on Facebook and Twitter.

Walk to End Alzheimer's By Honorary Chairperson Ray Harris In the May Footprint I introduced you to the upcoming "Walk to End Alzheimer's" event to be held at Meadowmere Park on Saturday, October 11. This noncompetitive walking event is a major fund raiser for the Alzheimer's Association North Central Texas Chapter. The revenue raised will be used to research a cure and to assist individuals already suffering with this disease and their caregivers. Many of you either have a loved one that is or has been afflicted or knows of someone that has. This is a nasty disease that robs a person of their memory, their mind, their dignity and eventually their life. Alzheimer's disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation's sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer's disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today's more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer's, two thirds of those are women. I am hoping that LGRAW will have a large team there to support this effort. To be clear, this is a fundraising event similar to "Team in Training". There is no registration fee to participate in the event but hope is that you can get pledges from others to support your participation. I have the honor of serving as the Honorary Chairperson for the event this year. When I was asked, it was an easy decision since my mother lost her battle with the disease in April 2011. I asked Christine Bassano to act as the LGRAW team captain and she has graciously accepted. We will have an LGRAW team registered on the Alzheimer's site. All you need to do is access the site (http://act.alz.org/Grapevine) and complete the registration for the LGRAW team. Then start harassing, I mean, asking your family, friends and neighbors to support you. Or, get them to register, too. Join us in the fight to end Alzheimer's by visiting www.alz.org/northcentraltexas or by contacting Ray Harris at rayharris00@yahoo.com or Christine Bassano at crobymbassano@hotmail.com. This is a great cause. Please join our RAW team; we could use your help.
