Lake Grapevine Runners & Walkers | June 2014 Dear Lake Grapevine, Dads, grads, and summer sun... it's that time of year again! Things are heating up in Grapevine, literally! Be sure to take steps to keep yourself safe on the run as the temperatures climb. Everyone knows of the need to hydrate and use sunscreen, but don't forget to pay extra attention to the roadways around our courses as boaters, swimmers, and sunbathers increase the traffic to the lake. Summer also marks the season of change at RAW. The annual 4th of July Barbecue is Election Day for the club's board. You are qualified to run if you are a current member, so be sure to read below for details on how to run for an open position. You'll also find the details about the barbecue itself, and about nominating a member for the club's highest honors: the Best Foot Forward award. You won't want to miss these opportunities. Welcome to summer, folks! We'll see you on the course!

TOUGHIES
By Troy Pruett
Do you have ideas that could improve the club? Skills that would benefit the membership? RAW need YOU! The following four positions will be up for election this year: Vice President Treasurer Membership Director Footprint Coordinator/PR Co-Director Elections will be held at the annual July 4th Picnic. For more information about what is involved and/or how to run, contact RAW president Joe Luccioni.
did you know? RAW is an all-volunteer organization. If you are new, you may not know that no one is appointed to put out water and Gatorade every weekend. As the temperature outside increases, so does the need for water duty volunteers! It's not difficult. See the water duty instruction link in this newsletter, or simply ask around at the clubhouse. It's usually not hard to find someone to help teach you the steps.

Staci Rivero
What's the history of your running "habit" - when did you start? How did you progress? I was running very casually as exercise around 2000-2002, but when I had a seizure and brain surgery following... everything changed. I wanted to run a race with my dad to "prove" I was healed after my surgery. I chose the Half Marathon at Disney World... my dad talked me into the Marathon (he liked the Mickey medal more than the Donald medal). We trained by reading a book! Ha! Disney's 2003 Marathon was my first race... ever... and I've been hooked ever since! What does running do for you now? Now running is my identity, my stress relief, my "feel-good" time, my social life. So much of my life is connected with running... maybe I'm addicted? I guess there could be worse things? What's your favorite place to run - local? - anywhere? I've run in some pretty cool places since now most of my vacations revolve around running... Canada, Alaska, Chattanooga, Boston.... But really, the best place to run is around Grapevine Lake and my RAW family. I like the trails a bit more these days, but home is where I love to run! What day in your running career would you like to live over again? If I could live another day over, it would be the 2006 Austin "Freeze Scale" race. I qualified for Boston on that bitterly cold day, but I felt like that was my easiest run to date. Nothing was difficult. Everything fell into place. I wish every race could feel as good as it did that day. There were many training runs leading up to that day that were so much fun, and the post race party was a blast! Even the day I ran Boston in 2007 wasn't even as perfect as that day! What's your best advice for a newbie, or any runner for that matter? I really don't have much advice to a newbie. I don't know much! I love to run, so I would tell someone run because you want to, not because your friend wants you to, not to lose weight, not because your doctor told you get off the couch, and certainly not to get faster! Running should be fun, something you look forward to. If it's a chore, it's not for you. Would you like to nominate someone to be featured for Giving Back or In Step With? Send us an email!

RRCA Runnings Kelly "K2" Richards, RRCA Director-at-Large The 56th Annual Road Runners Club of America National Convention held in Spokane was a smashing success in every sense. There was fantastic running weather and routes, entertaining speakers, increased attendance (it was rumored that more attendees came from Texas than any other state) a sold-out certified coaching course, record-high fundraising through the silent and live auctions, the debut of RRCA Wear at Bloomsday, the RRCA National Championship, and exciting news for the Lone Star State . The Dallas Running Club was awarded the 58 th annual convention, which will be held in March 2016. It will be the first time north Texas is host of an RRCA Convention. The Houston Striders hosted the 2006 convention. Also announced, Detroit will be the 2017 host city. The next convention will be in Des Moines, IA April 22-26, 2015, in conjunction with the Drake Relays. Save a much sooner date: September 19, 2014, the Road Runners Club of America will promote the 9th Annual RUN@WORK Day and the 3rd Annual RUN@School Day, nationwide fitness efforts. The goal of RUN@WORK Day and RUN@School Day is to encourage adults and children to get 30 minutes of exercise each day, in accordance with the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, either before work/school, during lunch, or immediately following work/school. It's not too early to start planning and promoting these efforts with your company, employer or local school. I'm excited at the opportunity to participate in my third RRCA National Championship in 2014. For this race, RRCA North Texas State Rep Kathryn Gleghorn and I will be headed to Michigan for the Dexter-Ann Arbor Run, the RRCA National Half-Marathon Championship on June 1. If you're looking for a championship race a little closer to home the next Texas State Championship is The San Angelo Road Lizard'sRun in the Sun 8K, Texas' longest running 8K, on June 7. Connect with the RRCA on Facebook and Twitter.
Volunteer Appreciation
On May 15, RAW showed appreciation to the many volunteers who step up time and again to support the club. In addition to a pizza dinner and gifts for the volunteers, attendees participated in a walking-only 5K. No running was allowed, which proved to be a challenge for some! In the end, Chris Morris, Beth Brueggen, and Tia Metzger proved victorious in the race. Volunteers, once again, thanks for going the EXTRA mile!
RAW President Joe Luccioni and Directors Diane Ferguson and Stan Pollard hosted the event.
RAW volunteers take off at the start of the Walking-only 5K.
DBall Runs Japanese Half Marathon
By David Ball "Gahn bahreh! Dahrasu! Gahn bahreh!" I heard this cheer throughout my running of the Sendai, Japan International Half Marathon on Sunday, May 11th. "Gahn bahreh" is an expression that means "Go for it; be strong!" in Japanese. "Dahrasu" is roughly how they pronounce "Dallas", written in Japanese on my race shirt. Still hard for me to believe I was actually there, running THIS Half in my mother's home town which became internationally known by the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. City officials allowed me to run the race even though the deadline had passed weeks before. Their kindness stems from my tsunami-relief fundraising campaign prior to the Boston Marathon 2011. You can only imagine my excitement when a dozen members of my Japanese family and my dad came out to cheer me on. To my Takahashi family, I am this freaky American relative who runs distance races and were thrilled to see run. Race Day was sunny, mid-60 degrees and windy at 10 a.m. start. I was in C corral (went all the way to F corral) but had to weave a lot in Miles1 & 2. The course was hilly, but had pockets of shade under giant trees in the downtown avenues ("Sendai" is known as the 'City of Holy Trees'). Japan sporting events are quite formal. Elaborate starting line ceremony; National Anthem by military band; long moment of silence. Along the race course were traditional Japanese kimono dancers and ancient Taiko drummers wearing big Gahn bahreh headbands! Dramatic finish is in Sendai Stadium; sprinting on the oval track! Exhausted, I dash the final meters with my arms raised, yelling "Takahashi!" to show respect for my family who are cheering wildly with handmade American flags, "Dehbeed! Dehbeed!" (David!) So overcome with pride, I walk to the edge of the track; wave to them; then give the traditional Japanese bow. Unforgettable moment. That night, I am an honored guest at the International Sister Cities post race party where Dallas and several other sister cities celebrate, sing, dance, eat, drink 'beeru' and exchange gifts. My Japanese relatives got to come, and it was a wonderful night.
