I

n case you haven’t heard, RAW is celebrating its 15-year anniversary this year.. In celebration of the anniversary, a special edition Sport Science ® tech shirt has been created and we are currently taking prepaid orders for them. The RAW 15th anniversary logo is on the front left pocket and all the names of the pre-order purchasers will be listed on the back. The T-shirts cost $20 each and are available in both men’s and women’s styles. Sample sizes are at the clubhouse along with an order form. To guarantee your name is added to the commerative anniversary T-shirt, place your order and have your pre-order payment in by May 31, 2012. To date, we’ve had a half marathon as part of our Bold in the Cold race, hosted a Friday afternoon happy hour and a Leap Day Run & Volunteer Appreciation Social, just to name a few. We’re not done yet, as we are still working on some fun ideas to take us through the summer and into 2013. Here are a few things to celebrate RAW’s 15th anniversary:

Make plans to join your RAW friends on Sunday, May 20 for an afternoon of fun as teams make their way around the Southlake/ Grapevine area chasing after “Route Envelopes” and completing “Roadblock” tasks to get to the Finish Line. Teams consisting of 2-3 players (RAW members only) will be selected at random from amongst all participants based on their RAW membership renewal date. Plan to arrive at the RAW clubhouse at 2:30 PM with the Amazing Race Starting Line Challenge beginning at 3:00 PM. Each team will designate a team car, have a timer (smart phone or watch) and should be prepared to run, walk, get wet, eat, drink and perform other simple tasks. Prizes awarded to the first place team and bragging rights too. Please RSVP on Facebook or signup at the clubhouse. A post-event celebration to follow at Baja’s in Grapevine.

President’s Message A perspective to the members from RAW President Kathryn Gleghorn “And, remember, it is not large accomplishments that makes success, it is the little things we do every day that over time turn into success.” – Catherine Pulsifier

A

t the beginning of the year I was contacted by fellow RAW member and White Rock Marathon Chairman of the Board, Kevin Snyder, to discuss what makes RAW such a successful running club. Kevin’s group is interested in helping start grassroots running clubs / programs around the state of Texas and thought our club was a good club to emulate. I believe the quote above speaks to what makes RAW so successful. As you know, 2012 is RAW’s 15-year anniversary and, in continuing our tradition of being a fun and social running and walking club, we are hoping to make this year a memorable one by hosting more socials to celebrate our anniversary. If you want a bit of the history of RAW and our early years, you need look no further than past issues of our award-winning newsletter the FOOTPRINT. The recognition RAW has received through the years for our newsletter is the collaborative effort of many members. Did you know our current FOOTPRINT editors Kevin and Lorraine Wessels have been overseeing our newsletter for more than six years? That’s a lot of dedication and work they selflessly volunteer to our club. I think they do an outstanding job with the content, artwork, layout and everything else that goes into putting together our bimonthly newsletter. Before the Wessels, there was Susan Barnett and her team that put together our newsletter family-style back in the early years. I was never a part of this effort, but I’ve heard tales about meetings at Susan’s house and people handlabeling the newsletters for mailing. And in true RAW tradition, the FOOTPRINT mailing gatherings often turned into mini-parties. Shocking, right? In addition to Susan’s stint as newsletter editor, Susan has also served time as a board member. No matter what legwork goes into getting the FOOTPRINT into each member’s mailbox, it has always been a wellreceived publication and has been a great tool to shine the spotlight on our members through our columns, “Giving Back to the Sport,” “In Step With,” “The President’s Message” and the many articles written by our members. I have been involved with the FOOTPRINT since 2008 writing articles, editing stories and proofing the final copy before the publication is sent to the printer. Tony Flesch has also volunteered many hours towards the publication of our newsletter (see his article on page 4 ) and his efforts have been a factor in the FOOTPRINT being recognized by the Road Runners Club of America as an outstanding publication.

Some of the other columns that enjoyed a good run in the pages of our FOOTPRINT include “Ask Spareribs,” “RAW Zone Race Results” by Thomas “T.O.” Okazaki and some occasional cartoons by our talented artist, Noreen “Diva” Henry. Thankfully, we’re still enjoying our nationallyrecognized club writer Mark Miller’s “On Your Mark!” column. I know there are many others who have contributed to the success of our newsletter and I am not intentionally leaving anyone out, so please know you are appreciated even if you didn’t get mentioned here. So while the bimonthly mailing of our newsletter may not seem like a “big” deal, it takes a bunch of “little” things to get the final award-winning publication to our members’ mailboxes. Speaking of “the little things we do every day,” where would this club be without our dedicated board members? I have no idea what the exact headcount is of people who have served on the RAW board, but I know it takes a special person to commit their time on a monthly basis to volunteer to lead the club. In RAW’s 15 years, we’ve had eight club presidents, with Kelly “K2” Richards leading the group with the most years served – five consecutive years as president. We’ve also had several board members who have served more than one term on the board. And if you’d like to serve your club by serving as a board member, please consider getting your name on the ballot for our 2012 elections (see page 13 for more details). I’ll say it again, the volunteer position that I personally see as one of the most important roles is that of WATER DUTY VOLUNTEER. I give it all caps because it’s that important to me. What would our weekend runs be like without water and Gatorade® out on the course? In my six years of being a RAW member, I can only recall one weekend when I was surprised to find no water out on the west course. I guess the always-reliable water duty volunteer Gary Howsam must have been at Northshore walking the trails and thus, unavailable. Needless to say, that February run in 2009 was an under-hydrated one for me. So that’s what I told Kevin. It’s the little things RAW does that attributes to our success. We are a running and walking club that likes to have fun, celebrate our members’ achievements and incorporate social events as a part of our monthly activities. We are successful because our members step up to make us that way. Thank you RAW for all you do for your fellow club members!

In a Flash! RAW Reflections By Tony “Flash” Flesch

W

ith the upcoming elections at our annual 4th of July meeting, my term as Vice President will come to an end. It will also mark the conclusion of seven years as a RAW Board Member in various capacities, including five years as the FOOTPRINT Coordinator. As the club commemorates our 15th year, (It seems like only yesterday that we celebrated our 10th anniversary – I still have the shirt!) let’s take a stroll down memory lane and see how RAW has matured over the years. RAW has continued to grow and thrive and has a reputation for excellence. We have many “old-timers” still up and running, but a recent look at some RAW statistics shows that 70% of our current membership joined after we celebrated that 10th birthday. RAW was founded in May 1997 by a small group, often referred to as our Charter Members. Most are still active in the club. The club originally met in the parking lot by the softball field and secured the first (in a string of many) sixmonth lease on our current clubhouse in December of 1997. By June 2008, our membership reached 150. The first issue of the FOOTPRINT made its debut in the fall of 1997. RAW began the tradition of supporting the White Rock Marathon with an aid station in 1999. Remarkably, membership dues have never increased during our history, thanks to the efforts of our RAW-some race directors and volunteers. RAW has had an amazing history of popular and successful races that have helped fund and support the club’s rent and operating expenses, social events and fun runs. RAW has also been able to donate a significant amount to various charities. Our two current races have been around for many years. Bold in the Cold made its inaugural start in 1999 and Double Trouble debuted in 2000. Ironically, one of most popular annual races is one that “never” happens. The Anti-Turkey Trot made its debut on Thanksgiving morning in 2000 and has been (or “not” been) running strong ever since. All of our races continue to grow and evolve. RAW is well-known throughout the Metroplex for its ability to put on a quality event. The 2010 Bold in the Cold showcased the debut of our new IPICO timing system.

prestigious award that a member can receive. It exemplifies the spirit of RAW and was first handed-out in 2001. There is a plaque on the clubhouse wall that lists all of the previous recipients. There is also an ad in this FOOTPRINT requesting nominations for the 2012 BFF award that will be presented in July at the annual meeting. Our first President was Richard Craft (Founder), followed by Eileen Fontaine, Ray Harris, Kelly Richards (multiple terms), Joe Luccioni, Thomas Okazaki, Ray Harris (again), and Kathryn Gleghorn. In addition to the original weekend group runs, the weekday morning trail runs began in 2003. After several attempts to get an evening group started in the mid 2000s, Troy Pruett got the Trackies and Hillbillies off and running in circles in 2009. When our RAW members go off to the races, the “left foot” RAW logo is recognized throughout the Metroplex. Although we are all celebrities, some notable visitors stopped in and joined our weekend runs, including Jeff Galloway (2002), Bart Yasso (2006), and Major Rick Nealis (2007), a former Marine who has been the Marine Corps Marathon race director for the past 18 years. After that brief historical recap, let’s see where we are today. RAW currently has approximately 430 households and over 700 members! 70% of our current membership joined since 2007 and 50% since 2010. Our membership resides in over 40 cities within the Metroplex, with our top five cities being: Grapevine, Southlake, Keller, Colleyville and Coppell. Several members also dwell in Flower Mound, Euless, Lewisville, Irving and Bedford. And to paraphrase a famous Eagles song, “some people leave but can never check out,” we also have active members from coast (Jacksonville, Florida) to coast (Temecula, California). If you are interested in more history, the esteemed BFF award, or serving on the RAW Board (see other articles in this issue) let me know. Serving on the RAW Board has been a very rewarding and fulfilling experience and I can honestly say that I got back as much as I gave. Although my board term expires in July, I plan to stay very active in RAW. In fact, I recently moved a half-mile from the clubhouse!

Long before texting became popular, RAW had its own BFF. The Best Foot Forward is the club’s highest and most Tony is a RRCA Road Runners Club of America Certified Running Coach and writes a running column for www.CoppellToday.com.

RAW Shooting Stars Terry Marcott By Kelly “K2” Richards

T

erry Marcott is a charter RAW member who has run hundreds of races, winning over 100 of them in distances ranging from 5K to 50 miles. His marathon personal record (PR) is faster than any other RAW member in our club’s 15-year history. His time that October day placed him ahead of America’s sweetheart Olympic Marathon gold medalist. He is one of the fiercest competitors I’ve ever known, yet you won’t hear him bragging. He doesn’t need to because his accomplishments stand on their own. Just make sure you know his marathon PR before you give him advice. You’ve won over 100 road races in distances from 5K to 50 Miles. Does one win stand out as being especially memorable? I believe that each win at the longer distances brought both relief and extreme satisfaction. My only marathon win, the 1996 Louisville Marathon, was especially rewarding. I spent the last mile looking back and wondering if this was really happening. The marathon always brings talented runners and on this particular day I was able to stand on the middle podium, what a nice feeling. Tell us about your high school running experience. I ran cross country and track in high school. My first trophy is still my favorite, when I placed 5th overall in our conference that year. I went on to finish 2nd a couple of years later, only to beat the winner the next week. Cross country was always much more challenging for me because the runners were always thinking and calculating a next move. What are your PRs? • 5K: 15:29 • 10K: 32:50 • Half: 1:13:35 • Marathon: 2:36:58 • 50K: 3:33:00 • 50 Mile: 7:10:20 What do you consider your biggest running achievement? While most would want a time and mile, I actually consider that I won a road race each year for twenty years in a row a good lifetime achievement. During your marathon PR race at Chicago in ’94, you ended up running

with Joan Benoit Samuelson, who is the first ever women’s marathon Olympic Gold Medalist and former world record holder in the marathon. Tell us about it. It began near the 20- or 21-mile mark. There was a short out-and-back and you could see those in front of you. It was then I realized that I was near the world record holder. This inspiration helped me pick up the pace and ultimately catch Joan near the 22-mile mark. While I usually had a strong finish in most marathons, this day was special. A very focused, but friendly Joan, had words of encouragement which helped me close this day with a personal record and break a barrier which stands for me today. My time was 2:36:58. I am more impressed with the finish I had that day, one with lifelong memories. But finishing near an Olympic Gold Medalist, former women’s world record holder, and just an overall great ambassador to our sport, was enough for me. (Interviewer’s note: Terry beat Joan Benoit Samuelson by 10 seconds that day! The information that had to be pried out of him!) Have you ever met, run with or been inspired by a famous runner (beside Joanie at Chicago)? I have met and shaken hands with a few great ones, but my inspiration always came from my training buddies. Bill Deckard, Norman Bluebaum, Jeff Roth, Larry Moffatt, Don Nelson, Stan Ujka, Craig Minyard and Byron Benoit, to name a few, gave inspiration continuously. Here were guys ready to work their hearts out in order to improve. I have always felt that I received energy from those around me. You’re a retired Command Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army. While serving in Iraq you participated in a race. Tell us what it was like to run in those conditions. It was the 2007 AT&T Austin Marathon and Half Marathon mirror run simply named the Baghdad Marathon and Half Marathon. I ran the half in 1:33:50. Stretches of the race course included roads that a year before were considered the most dangerous in the world, yet that day I was running down them. During the run, I reflected on my initial fears of all the unknowns of those first weeks upon arrival. I was much more comfortable with my surroundings now, but still vigilant. Approximately 160 runners

participated in the two distances. My time was slower, but spirit high, as American and Iraqis alike ran side by side. As a self-proclaimed “old school” runner, what do you miss about the old days of running / racing and what do you like most about today’s running scene? I truly miss the old days where I would go out and hammer six-minute miles in twenty-mile training runs. But I most miss racing and the fellowship that followed. Today, my running scene is more relaxed and far less demanding. I enjoy watching younger runners emerge who will be leaders in the future. You’re a Charter RAW member, past board member, race director and you’ve served on multiple RAW committees. Regardless of where I live, I would like to remain involved in running or walking. I especially enjoy sharing that passion with others. This helps me to remain engaged and keeps others involved as well. Just last week I was in Nashville, Tennessee, for a trade show. While there, I met a runner from Grapevine who was not involved with RAW. Obviously, I saw this as an opportunity to bring more to our club. We all get the chance to ambassador; I can only hope that I can do it justice. Do you have a RAW / running nickname? Uh oh, maybe it can be shared with me. I don’t know that I have one. One day at the clubhouse, someone who clearly didn’t know your running history was giving you some advice. Your response has become legendary and is often jokingly used around the clubhouse as good ol’ smack talk when someone can’t “win”vthe topic he/she is discussing. What did you say? Let me finally get my side of this story told. A well-meaning runner was engaging me with advice on how to improve. I don’t know at this point if it was before or after my workout, but it was early in the morning. I always worked very hard and knew all the diet, sleep and caloric intake information. This guy did not deserve the question, but my patience gave up and I interrupted him to ask the question, “What is your marathon PR?” Then word spread quickly due to my good friend Byron and the rest is history.


Six Chicks, a Gary...and another Guy By Kathryn Gleghorn

To the best of our knowledge, you have the best marathon time for any RAW member – ever. In your opinion what will it take for someone to improve on your time? I cannot verify whether my PR is a club PR as well, but it certainly would be top five for sure. What it takes requires a healthy dose of genetics, good combination of muscle fibers, VO2 max of 68, proper training and much confidence in yourself. As many of us know, the marathon begins at 20 miles and you must face the demons with counter-attacks. These counterattacks include past experiences which lift you through the exhaustive fight and help you travel through the fear door. Someone who can do that will confidently execute a well-prepared training plan. Would you consider yourself to be (or have been) a mentor to anyone specific? This list is long which stretches to the late 80s when I began to coach younger high school kids in Indiana. I saw myself more of an extension to their coaches at school. Two kids from a town of three thousand where I lived went to state in the mile and two mile. It is an amazing feeling to take fearless kids and provide them with structure and help them believe that they can do things unreachable by themselves. One day I would like to return to high school coaching and develop abilities, but, more importantly, launch young adults into society with the confidence and maturity to make a difference.

F

or the second year in a row, the RAW Chicks “manned” an aid station at the popular Grasslands Trail Run in Decatur, Texas. Although this race is put on by our sister club, the North Texas Trail Runners, RAW has been very supportive of this spring race with many RAW members running one of the three races or volunteering. In fact, prior to this year, all of the previous Grasslands races were directed by RAW members Suzi Cope (10 years) and Kevin and Stacie Boudreaux (3 years). It may be an NTTR event, but it definitely has RAW’s “footprint” on it. This year’s RAW Chicks included Karen Bosworth, Kathryn Gleghorn, Evelyn Luccioni, Barbara Martin, Tia Metzger and Melissa Schlenker. Gary Howsam decided to take a break from weekend water duty back at the clubhouse and joined the Chicks as the lone male at the Outback aid station. Jack Hase also volunteered at another Grasslands aid station. It was a long day for the group. We headed to Grasslands at 5:45 AM and returned home about 12 hours later. All the Chicks looked great in their new “RAW Chicks” volunteer shirts that sported purple, hot pink and white instead of the traditional RAW colors. Don’t worry, we still kept RAW’s signature left foot footprint.

What do you consider your biggest running achievement? I did the Walt Disney World ® Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge. It’s a half marathon on Saturday and a marathon on Sunday. I finished, but it ruined my whole weekend. What was your least favorite run? My least favorite was probably a marathon in Wyoming. There were very few participants, very few water stops, no time splits, and at times you couldn’t see anyone else. I just followed the markings on the street.

Are you a native Texan? No, I was born and raised in Chicago. How did you start running or walking? In what seems like a prior life, I was a police officer and my partner was a marathon runner. I was a smoker. Every time I would light a cigarette, my partner would go nuts. Eventually he got me to quit smoking by getting me into running and after my first marathon… I was hooked! How long have you been running or walking? Over 25 years. How did you get involved in RAW? I’m new to Grapevine and my daughter found this group while searching online about Grapevine. I thought about not joining since I am a walker now and not a runner. I realize that would have been a huge mistake. There is something special about this group. I didn’t know anyone, but I came to the RAW clubhouse on a Saturday morning. Tony Flesch was the first to welcome me. That, in itself, should have scared me off, but it didn’t. “Flash” walked with me, even though he is a runner. He talked about the club and all of the activities it has to offer. I couldn’t have been treated better. It far exceeded my expectations and I have always been thankful to Tony for that. You are a walker. When you walk, are you bothered by the people passing you when they are running? They are missing our conversations. It’s their loss and I feel sorry for them.

Do you have a real job? No, I was a police officer who switched to firefighting. I specialized in fire and arson investigations. I worked my way up to Fire Chief. I retired and I work part time now. How fast do the walkers walk? You can walk at any speed. Some enjoy a fast-paced walk, like Nannette Poole, who is a very fast walker. Some enjoy a brisk pace and some groups walk just to “take in the scenery.” We want more walkers in the club. It’s a personal decision; everyone enjoys different things. Art that is beautiful to me might not be beautiful to you. Most walkers enjoy the conversation while walking. It’s a visit, an experience, it’s social and healthy. Some walkers walk / jog the route. The beauty of RAW is partnering with people who share a similar pace. Walkers and runners are very similar people. Some want challenges, while some just want a shared experience. If someone is not a runner, why would that person join RAW? My brother Jack visited Grapevine last month for the first time. He jogs, so he came to the club with me on a Saturday morning. After meeting members and pairing up with some RAW characters, he told me that he went farther and faster than he planned. He thought it was a very positive experience. With the walkers, I’ve found that I’m more apt to show up and walk more readily because of the group. You tend to “blow it off” less frequently because of the group. There are no minimums or maximums. Whether you are new to Grapevine, or have lived here for years, RAW has something to offer. It’s a healthy thing to do with people of similar interest. RAW has cool routes with water and sports drink on the route. RAW needs more walkers.

How are the RAW social events? The events that I attended were very entertaining. Runners and walkers have a lot in common. Any social group (that drinks) that has a common bond and interest would obviously be fun. But what I found are there are other interests, other conversations, unexpected interests that made the social event so interesting. The diversity of RAW enticed me. I expected race stories, personal goal achievement stories, and, of course, the training program comparison stories. You will get that, but what I didn’t expect was the diverse professional exchange, interesting conversations, and outside interests that were freely discussed among the members. I’m new, but that didn’t matter. New people are welcome and desired. This club isn’t hurting for members, it is about friendships. It’s my best move since coming to Grapevine. Is it true that the Runners and Walkers drink? It’s an old cliché that running and walking clubs are drinking clubs with a running problem. I will neither confirm nor deny the truth of this when compared to RAW. I will just say that they recycle…a lot, and that is good. Do you have any last comments? RAW is lopsided with runners. That’s pretty understandable. If you know someone who is not into running, let her or him know that there is a place in RAW. It’s beyond the running and walking – it is so much more: the motivation, the social bonds, and the healthy lifestyle.


My Fastest Ultra-Marathon: According to My Garmin® By Jeff “Barney” Barnhart

T

wo years ago, I wrote a story for the May / June 2010 FOOTPRINT on a run where, according to my Garmin, I ran my fastest marathon. I encourage you to dig through your old issues and rehash the thrilling adventure. A couple of weeks ago my Garmin again displayed for me a new PR (personal record), but this time the distance was 50K (31 miles). Now, I need to point out that I revere all of our members who have completed runs of the ultra distance, so I don’t take this accomplishment lightly. I completed the 50K in 1:42:59. Yes, that is correct, according to my Garmin it was 1:42:59. If you’re familiar with Patrick Makau’s marathon world record time of 2:03:38 that he set last fall in Berlin, you may be thinking, “How can this be?” I mean, when you see me running at the club, I’m well in front of my running buds, but surely running a 50K faster than the marathon world record probably raises a level of incertitude. Well, if you remember my story two years ago, the catch of this is I was running on a cruise ship in the middle of the Caribbean and, with the movement of the ship, my Garmin watch indicated I had covered the distance of 50K, but in reality had only run 10.5 miles. This is a really good math and physics problem with the speed of the ship and the runner being combined for half of the lap with the runner going in the opposite direction during the other half. I just keep thinking if I had run like some of the faster runners in the club, I might have, according to my Garmin, gone a lot farther.

I Feel Like It Is Thanksgiving All Over Again: Sweet Reflections, or is that “confections”? By Marty “Buster” Metzger

O

ne of the things that makes our club great is that so many members make such fine contributions, from volunteering for water duty and the many club events to hosting parties and serving on the board. I have so much to be thankful for again today, March 18th, 2012. Thanks go out to Dennis Dixon for volunteering his weekend morning to get his kayak back and forth to the lake for our first open water wetsuit swim workout of the season. I’m also grateful that Troy Pruett survived his first open water swim preparing for Ironman® Arizona this November. After expressing a little apprehension on Facebook, he got out of

the 60° water feeling good enough to get on the bike for a couple of hours. Many would certainly testify that I haven’t met a cupcake I didn’t like, but I just tasted my first Chocolate GUINNESS® Stout cupcake and it was truly exceptional. Chris Morris, please pass along my expression of gratitude to your wife. To any newbies in the club, one of the many advantages here is that there are so many terrific dessert chefs to motivate us back out on another workout so we can burn off that last temptation. I have considered opening a dessert boutique featuring Evelyn Luccioni’s

RRCA Runnings Road Runners Club of America

Road Runners Club of America – Still leading the way in fun, safety, leadership and all that jazz! By Kelly “K2” Richards, RRCA Director-At-Large

There is much going on with the RRCA across the nation and right here in Texas. The 54th annual National Convention in Memphis was a smashing success. There was a perfect blend of BBQ, blues on Beale Street, state rep training and educational seminars for all attendees. Olympic gold-medalist Dave Wottle, author Christopher McDougall, and of course Elvis (looking fit and trim as a runner) participated in events throughout the weekend. The vendor expo was abuzz with excitement over new technologies, special offers, the latest, greatest and biggest race medals as well as the annual race shirt contest. RAW’s Double Trouble shirt made it to the final round of the contest with Avenue of the Giants (marathon) winning. The convention concluded with the Germantown Half the RRCA National Half Marathon Championship race. The 2013 convention is scheduled for May 2-5 in Albuquerque. The theme, a reference to chili peppers, is red, green or Christmas. Come join the fun! The board of directors is proud to have adopted the Race Director Code of Ethics, a standard by which all RRCA events must comply. Complying will help to keep RRCA events safe, ethical, and fun for everyone. By committing to the code of ethics clubs and event members might receive

greater support from their community when trying to obtain sponsors, race permits, volunteers and of course racers. Congratulations are in order for Kathryn Gleghorn who was recently appointed as the RRCA North Texas State Rep. At least four different people expressed interest in the position, a sign the RRCA is thriving in Texas. I’m confident Kathryn will serve all the North Texas clubs will the same enthusiasm she has brought to RAW and the local running / walking community. Thank you to Libby Jones who served as the State Rep the past few years. After over half a century of serving the running community fun, safety, leadership and all that jazz is still the RRCA way.

On Your Mark! A Winter Escape By Mark Miller

N

o sandy beaches. No palm trees or balmy breezes. Not a seagull in sight. This February getaway offered not on a paradise island, but in a non-descript local suburb. Yet my trip to the 26th annual Haltom Stampede was just the one-day vacation I needed. The weather was anything but tropical. Temperatures in the upper 20s and strong winds made for a bone-chilling Saturday morning. Thankfully, the elements of friendly competition, genuine fellowship and fun provided a welcome winter warm-up for my chilled soul. I admit it – the cold winter weather had left me grumpy. By mid-February, the vibrant colors and warm days of spring seemed distant, replaced by the dingy, dreary gray of winter. February means training alone on dark, cold mornings. On top of this, my job focuses more on numbers than people. This largely fits the loner that I am, as I thrive on the solitude of training and credit analysis that makes up my weekdays. Also, I am not a traveler. The jet-setting that some people love, I loathe. I rarely leave the State of Texas, my immobility attributable to parsimony and a desire for familiar routines and places. This made the Haltom Stampede a perfect escape. It was local, familiar, and welcoming. I was making a return trip, 21 years after my first visit. I’ve returned many times since, a familiar winter destination. The race itself was nothing unusual; I’ve run scores of other races just like it. In the 5K, I moved up from 5th to 3rd overall in the final mile. After more than two decades of running, I still love the challenge of the chase, of trying to catch the guy just ahead of me. I crossed the finish line with an exhausted satisfaction that never gets old. The postrace glow added excitement to an otherwise dull winter day.

– the familiar faces. Pre-race greetings inside the gloriously heated Haltom Recreation Center had the feeling of a reunion. Old friends shook hands and told stories. Warm souls heated cold bodies. The camaraderie continued post-race. New acquaintances and old friends compared post-race notes, complained about the strong winds, and rejoiced or lamented over times, places and trophies. Oh yeah, the trophies. The Haltom Stampede is well known for its ceramic buffalo trophies. It seems that almost every runner in the Metroplex either has one or wants one. I was fortunate to add to my collection with a 2nd place 30-34 age group placing, even while my competitive side wished for 1st place and loathed my finish time. As buffalos were presented, pictures were snapped, jokes were exchanged, and encouragement was shared. Such exchanges are common at awards presentations. I think I needed it more this day than usual. With buffalos collected, I joined a group of friends for post-race breakfast. The scrambled eggs and pancakes hit the spot, almost as much as time spent with running friends. It was just a low key local race, yet it was a very fun day. A frigid February 5K was just the break, and the warm-up, that I needed. Who needs a beach when you can go to Haltom City? As I finish writing this, it is now an 80-degree spring day. The dreariness of winter has been replaced with the bright warmth of spring, and shorts have replaced long pants and gloves. The change of seasons is a welcome reminder. When trapped in a winter frost (or summer furnace) of problems, doubts and fears, know that a springtime of renewal is on the way. Just hold on for a few more miles, and count on friends to encourage you and brighten the road in the meantime.

Giving Back to the Sport Henry Galpin Henry Galpin is a Charter RAW member who quietly gives back to the sport in many ways, from little things like taking the recycling home after the weekend, to handling the logistics for his Hood to Coast team, to offering advice to aspiring runners since he is one accomplished runner himself. For more on Henry’s amazing running career, check out the March / April 2012 FOOTPRINT. This was Henry’s third year of helping his lovely wife Emily direct the “Bird on the Run,” a 4-ish mile trail race at the Bob Jones Nature Center in Southlake, on March 31st. It was another successful effort and everyone who either ran or volunteered had a great time, especially the kids who ran the mile fun run.

To Henry, this is just another gift to the sport. He said, “All we’re trying to do is introduce the Nature Center to folks who might otherwise not be aware it exists.” What a worthy thing to do, bring nature lovers to running and running to nature lovers. The members of the Board at the Nature Center got involved with the race and it’s slowly becoming more popular. Each year Henry makes some change to the course or the logistics to make it better. Henry has no trouble getting volunteers to help because his friends know what a big heart he has and they enjoy working with him. After the race, they get to savor his volunteer barbecue. Run for the Board By Kathryn Gleghorn

I

t takes more than just paid memberships to make Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers the outstanding club it is. It takes members who are willing to actively give their time and talents to the sport and members of the club by serving in a leadership position on the board of directors. The annual elections will be held on July 4th and now is the time to consider running for a board position. Serving on the board is a great way to be involved with the mission, strategy, direction and responsibilities of the club as a not-for-profit organization. The 12 positions on the RAW Board are President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer and Director (seven positions). All positions are two-year terms with the President, Secretary, Assistant Treasurer and four Director positions elected in the same year and the remaining offices elected in the following or preceding year. The positions up for election in 2012 are VicePresident, Treasurer and three Directors. The Vice-President is second-in-command for the club and works closely with the President to be sure they are both informed about the activities of the club and the concerns of the membership. The main responsibility is to act as the liaison between the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) and RAW by being the point of contact for communications, keeping the club insurance up to date and submitting all RRCA nominations on behalf of RAW. The Vice-President will also be a member of any committees that are formed at the request of the board. The Treasurer is responsible for maintaining all financial records for the club which includes the following, but is not limited to these items: • collecting deposits and disbursing funds in a timely manner • maintaining financial records in a complete and accurate method • preparing periodic (monthly, quarterly and annual) financial reports The responsibilities of the three Director positions up for election include: • FOOTPRINT Director – solicits articles, photographs and other timesensitive information for our newsletter, the FOOTPRINT. Assists the editors as needed. • M embership Director – maintains the membership database and reports the membership numbers to the board, President and FOOTPRINT editors on a monthly basis. This Director is also

responsible for posting notices to the members when their membership is up for renewal or past due. • V olunteer Coordinator – maintains a volunteer list of all members who are willing to volunteer for our races, aid stations and other volunteer opportunities in the community. This person will work with our race directors to ensure there is a volunteer coordinator for their event and will assist in recruiting more volunteers. This is a new and important Director designation.

Directors are not solely responsibly for the execution of the task or duties for which they oversee, but are responsible for ensuring the task or duty has been assigned to a responsible party. As an example, the Volunteer Coordinator does not need to be the Volunteer Coordinator for every RAW event, but will recruit a club member to be the lead. Serving on the board has a monthly time commitment of approximately 90 minutes to two hours on a date and time determined by each individual board for the their board meeting. Additional time will be spent on other responsibilities as determined by each area of responsibility. It is expected that RAW board email communications sent out in between monthly board meetings will be answered in a timely manner by all board members.

Remembering Cleveland Ray By David Ball

O

ur club has enjoyed so many great new members in the last few years. On this 15th anniversary of RAW, some long-time members thought it’d be nice to talk about the club’s earlier days. Friendship is a huge part of our RAW life, supporting each other in our running and our individual lives. Each member brings value to the whole group. Many of us remember “Cleveland” Ray Paschal and the friendship he brought all the way from Cleveland – thus, his club nickname. Although he was not the fastest runner or the most skilled athlete, Cleveland Ray’s genuine heart and kindness exemplified the true spirit of running. He was a blessed asset to our club. Ray was a simple man so loved because he always had a word of encouragement, a funny joke or an uplifting story to tell. Ray’s friendship was contagious to all who knew him. His optimism was an endearing trait – even after the news of his brain tumor and the medical treatments he endured.

Best Foot Forward Award

Although he eventually lost his race against brain cancer in October 2006, his spirit lives on in our hearts. We continue to celebrate Cleveland Ray Paschal’s life by having a special award in his memory for the RAW member who carries on an exceptional spirit, friendship and optimism through the sport of running.

Regarded as RAW’s highest honor, the Best Foot Forward recipient is deemed to be the person who best exhibits the “spirit of RAW.” Past recipients have been recognized for consistently demonstrating leadership, volunteering both publicly and behind the scenes, encouraging and mentoring others and serving as a positive ambassador for our club. Past winners include Susan Barnett, Rick Sanford, Tony Flesch, Gary Howsam, Kelly Richards and Kathryn Gleghorn. Nominations are now open for the 2011 Best Foot Forward Award. To nominate a RAW member, send an email by June 10th to Tony Flesch at tonyf@runnersandwalkers.com with a paragraph describing why you believe your nominee is deserving. Please note that current RAW Board members are not eligible. The winner will be announced at the Fourth of July Annual Meeting.

RAW funded and planted a memorial tree through the city of Grapevine near the West Loop’s 3.75-mile mark. Five years ago, on Sunday, March 27, 2007, the club held a “memorial run” from the clubhouse to the tree site bearing yellow ribbons which each runner tied onto Ray’s tree. Before heading back, there was a short, touching ceremony. His family attended the commemoration and was deeply moved. A marker stone at the base of the tree reads, “’The Lord is my Shepherd.’ Cleveland Ray Paschal.” In addition, a Ray Paschal Memorial Fund was begun through the Taussig Cancer Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Today, Josie “Sweets” Paschal (Ray’s widow) told us that their middle daughter Rachel is about to be married later this year in September to a NASA engineer. Their son Joe is in graduate school and teaching physics at Northern Illinois University. The oldest daughter Desiree is a counselor at Marymount Hospital. The youngest daughter Sarah is in 11th grade in high school. Josie sent along a photo of the memorial bench for Ray in their beloved park where Ray used to run when he was back home in Cleveland. She thanked us for remembering her Ray.

Sunday, May 20 at 3:00 pm, at the clubhouse Teams will complete a scavenger hunt in the Southlake/Grapevine area chasing after “Route Envelopes” and completing “Roadblock” tasks to get to the Finish Line. Teams will be selected at random based on each participants RAW membership date. Each team will designate a team car, have a timer and should be prepared to run, walk, get wet, eat, drink and perform other simple tasks. Prizes awarded to the first place team and bragging rights too. A post-event celebration to follow at Baja’s in Grapevine. Please RSVP on Facebook or sign up at the clubhouse.
