Scarin’ Up Some Fun with Double Trouble 2012 By Danyah Arafat-Johnson RAW’s signature autumn race, Double Trouble, held on Saturday, October 27, had some scary moments prior to race day. First, many of our regular, hard-working volunteers were whisked away on a mystery jet to Ireland. A couple of our sponsors were too scared of us and backed out at the last minute. We scrambled to find a lead bike for the 10K. Finally, our shirt artwork… well, let’s just say it got the date right. We were competing with two half marathons. Would runners show up? The weather was unpredictable. The Race Director got a little nervous. The Volunteer Coordinator got a little stressed. It was all for naught. Race day was fantastic. With 471 registered runners, this turned out to be the biggest Double Trouble of all. Runners were treated to a beautiful cool morning to run the 5K, 10K, or both. Those who ran both were awarded two interlocking medals that created a nifty 15K medal. Runners and volunteers were encouraged to dress in costume to both run and work the race. We had some crazy, creative surprises! Overall winners were treated to a jack-o-lantern of runners’ trick or treat delights and Gatorade® gift bags. We had repeat winners in both of the races. Talk about double the trouble! The overall men’s winner in both the 5K and 10K was David Strome of Colleyville. He showed up two minutes late to the start of the 5K and still managed to win with a time of 16:34, and then did it again in the 10K with a time of 34:54. Women’s overall winner in the 5K was Jessica Smith of Trophy Club, finishing in 18:49. In fact, she was the first runner to cross the finish line! She cruised right in front of Jeff Garber from Lewisville, who took the overall men’s Masters 5K win in
Start of the Double Trouble 5K, Saturday, October 27, 2012.
18:53. Garber also went on to repeat his victory in the 10K Men’s Masters with a time of 39:26. Laura Nelson of Grapevine won the Women’s Masters 5K in 21:52, Mark Kercho of Bedford took the men’s Grandmasters 5K in 19:39, and Vicky Smith of Bedford won Women’s Grandmasters 5K in 23:19. Smith also won the 10K Women’s Grandmasters in 39:54. Women’s Overall 10K winner was Laura Harlett of Grapevine in 44:11, and women’s Masters 10K winner was Jennifer Wilford from Flower Mound in 46:38. Rounding out the 10K winners was Men’s Grandmaster Robert Fowler in 41:02. The day was more exciting than a really good haunted house! Fun was had by both the runners and the fantastic RAW volunteers who made it happen. Extra special thanks to Staci Rivero - Volunteer Coordinator, Jeff Barnhart – RD advisor, and the RAW Board of Directors. We’re confident that DT 2013 will pull

President’s Message A perspective to the members from RAW President Kathryn Gleghorn “A Change Would Do You Good” ~ Sheryl Crow
W
e started off the year with two successful and well-attended social opportunities. In January, we had the Friday night Happy Hour at Esparza’s to kick off our Anniversary Year. I was out of the country for this event, but I heard lots of great stories that would indicate everyone had a fun time. To coincide with Leap Year, we held our first-ever “Volunteer Appreciation Social.” This was a great way to recognize all the outstanding volunteers for all the ways they contributed to RAW in 2011. Volunteer at one of our club races and you received a raffle ticket. Volunteer for weekend water duty? You received a raffle ticket. Volunteer as a board member? You got another raffle ticket. Volunteer for our White Rock Marathon (now known as Dallas Marathon) aid station? Get another raffle ticket. And what do all those raffle tickets get you? A chance to pick from assorted prizes ranging from area race entries, RAW logo’d Volunteer towels and assorted running gear. If you think these are the types of thing you’d like to see us continue doing from year to year, please let us know and we’ll look into it. The current board has also gotten away from the traditional RAWear and instead has done pre-orders for RAW beanies, running caps and the commemorative 15th Anniversary t-shirt. Each of these items sold very well and it’s always fun to see so many members proudly sporting their RAWear. To set up a group photo op of all the anniversary shirts, we planned a summer happy hour at Red Dog Right in Southlake. The folks at RDR have the coldest beer in town and are still welcoming RAW peeps back to the restaurant on a weekly basis. If there is a particular running item you’d like to see with the RAW logo, let us know and we can look into the possibility of doing a pre-order. This year’s luau had a couple of contests with Kat Sparks crowned the Hula Hoop Queen and the guest of a member crowned the Limbo Queen. These contests showcased hidden talent of several members while proving very entertaining too. This summer we finalized plans for our annual Holiday Party and the decision was made to rent a facility for the festivities. As more and more people call RAW their home running club and partake in the social activities, we can no longer accommodate 100-plus party goers

in a club member’s home. The board made the decision to host this year’s party at Cross Timbers Winery in Grapevine. This is a BIG change on many levels. Members must purchase a ticket to attend the event and tickets must be purchased in advance via our fancy new website. For me, the biggest change for RAW has been over a year in the making and I’d say the wait was well worth it. I hope by now everyone has had the chance to familiarize themselves with our website redesign. I think if users keep in mind the lyrics posted above, they will come to see that change does in fact do you good. With the redesign of the website we moved from an antiquated web design to bring the RAW site up to date with the latest web design trends and functionality. All of the same content is on the website, but we hope you see the redesign as more menu driven and easier to navigate. The new web design has so much more information at your fingertips from RAW history to the latest FOOTPRINT and other links. We’ve had some positive feedback about the website redesign, but I’ve heard a few grumblings about the Forum and the difficulty in posting a new topic. If you are having difficulty with posting a comment on the Forum, please email me directly and I’ll be happy to walk you through it. In my six years as a RAW member I’ve made a few observations about RAW…we like to run, drink beer, socialize, eat and have a good time…and not necessarily in that order. So fear not, RAW will always be the same fun–loving running club you come to love, but heed Sheryl’s words, “Change will do you good.”

RAW Endurance – Profile of Courage: Ray and Letha Cruthirds By Kelly “K2” Richards
S
he is a RAW member. You know she’s fun. She celebrated turning 50 by running the Grand Slam (four 100-mile races in 10 weeks) followed by a fifth sub-24 hour finish 100-mile race four weeks later. You know she is persistent, tenacious and determined. Her nickname is Lethal. You know she’s tough. He served his country for more than 20 years in the Air Force. You know he’s brave. He became a commercial pilot following his military career. You know he loves being in the sky and in control. He bought a sailboat and built a farm back home in Mississippi. You know he was ready for retirement. At 8:30 in the morning on Sunday, December 11, 2011, Ray and Letha Cruthirds’ life changed in an instant. An intoxicated driver, going 80 MPH went through a red light slamming into the truck Ray was driving. The truck spun around three times and caught fire. A Good Samaritan pulled Ray from the destroyed burning truck. Ray spent almost a month in intensive care in Mobile, Alabama, two months in an Atlanta hospital and four months in the Houston VA hospital. Ray has a C6
Complete ASIA A spinal cord injury. Even though only his shoulders, biceps and wrists move normally, he spent months getting stronger and learned to transfer himself with a slide board to and from his hospital bed and various wheelchairs. Letha fought and won battles with insurance companies and learned how to care for Ray. Nurses loved Letha; she did all the work. Finally, more than six months after walking out the door, they returned home on June 29, 2012. Ray cannot move his fingers or hands and has no movement or feeling from his armpits down. Letha cares for all of Ray’s needs without outside or professional help. Ray’s siblings help as much as they can. His two brothers live on the Mississippi Coast, one sister is in Jackson, Mississippi, and one sister is in Chicago. Letha’s cousin is also helping when he is able. Life is very different and difficult for Ray and Letha. Gone are their dreams of a retirement filled with carefree days sailing the Gulf Coast and lazy nights on their little farm in Mississippi. Yet they’ve maintained incredible composure, a sense of humor, and gratitude for friends and family. Letha has managed to hang onto her hobbies, gardening, sewing, reading, and finally,
Letha and Ray Cruthirds
after many months, is again running. Ray continues to be courageous, focused and dedicated to his health.
Remember Your First Time? By Troy Pruett
I
’m a few days from my first triathlon. From knowing whether I trained too much or not enough. Knowing and not knowing, all at the same time, what I can expect and what I can accomplish. The anticipation of something new makes me think back on my first race. I ran track for two weeks my freshman year in high school. Oh, I’d like that opportunity again. Not all the other crap, but the opportunity to replay running as a 13-year old athlete. My school had one distance runner on the track team – a junior named Paul. Like many schools in my area, the track team was a way for football coaches to keep their players fit in the off-season. Runners were an unnecessary distraction. Paul was not a football player, he was a runner. I didn’t know this for a long time,
but during Paul’s sophomore year he ran under well under 5-minute miles and was truly feared by area distance runners. My first day of track, the football coach spotted this tall, 130-pound-when-wet, scrawny-ass punk hanging around. I’m sure he rapidly deduced I was not football material. He didn’t ask my name or why I was there. He said, “Go with Paul.” In less than 30 seconds, I had become the Number 2 man on the “Distance Team.” What did I do on Day One with Paul? We ran 10 miles. Paul took it easy on me. He never said a word, but I ran the distance. No watches, no cares, no worries. Just Paul, me, and my black high top Converse® shoes. Paul and I repeated this run over the next four days. During Week Two, we had two track meets.
6 FOOTPRINT | November - December 2012
When the mile event came up during the first meet, the coach told me to, “Go with Paul.” So, I ran with Paul – like always, not knowing Paul was a running superstar. Either I hung with Paul for two laps or he was taunting me. I still don’t know. I do know I worked on my “fading with grace” techniques for the final two laps. My high tops and I ran a 5:04 on a dirt track that day. I gave up running that week. No one ever said if I did well or sucked. The football coach was really pissed when I didn’t show for Week Three of track. I was more determined than ever to not run because of the football ass. It was years before I realized that I had missed what may have very well been a golden opportunity. It’s funny and a little sad how we look at opportunity when revealed.

where are they now Jeff Brown
By Kelly “K2” Richards You’re a Charter member that we haven’t seen in years. Where did the infamous Jeff Brown go? We relocated to eastern Tennessee to be close to wife Melanie’s family. We really love it there, but miss our RAW family. Your daughter Caroline was one of the original “RAW Kids.” Please tell us how she’s doing. She’s about 10 or 12 now, right? If she was, I would be a lot younger! Yes, Cara was largely raised by some of the RAW members, and she is actually living in Tennessee now, attending the (real) UT Veterinarian school (second year). I also legally adopted Emily, Mel’s daughter, who has recently blessed us with our first grandkid. A few marriages have formed from relationships that started at the club in the past few years but, yours and Melanie’s was the first. Actually, while I burned through a series of relationships back in those days, I actually met Mel running in circles at the Rec Center – she kicked my butt! On the day we got engaged (in Scotland) she cranked out 7 miles on a treadmill in 41 minutes! I do think that RAW is an amazing place for folks to connect, due to a shared passion for both running and having a great time. These days, not everyone realizes there is a K1 but I vividly remember the day she and I were running and you gave us the nicknames K1 and K2. You have a great memory, better than mine…that is what happens when you get old, I guess. There was even a K3 at one point but for the life of me I can’t remember who it was. We had a few Kellys at that point and this just happened on one of the runs…by the time we were finished that morning, the nicknames had stuck! RAW Around the World originally referred to a photograph of a RAW member somewhere famous in their RAW singlet. You were the original and most frequent photographed member. How did you come up with the idea and tell us some places your RAWear has seen. I guess it was a logical offshoot from all of the exotic runner’s T’s that we used to have hanging on the walls at the clubhouse. I remember hanging one from the first race run anywhere in the world in 2000 (given to me by the Balikpapen Borneo Hashers) – the race sponsor was a local whorehouse. As I recall the graphics on the shirt were rather…graphic. It did not last long on the wall – K2, was it you who tore it down? I have proudly worn my RAW charter member shirt in countries spanning more than 1.5 million miles – every continent except Antarctica-but the Borneo jungle run is still the most memorable. You’re still traveling a lot. What causes you to go so far away regularly? Geologic whore, will go anywhere to consult for money – gotta put a roof over our head. Actually, I am answering these questions from a hotel in Perth, Australia. Just passed 2.5 million miles in the air (not bragging, not complaining – just a fact). Over a dozen years ago your garage was the site of frequent RAW soirees, a mean game of ping pong and darts. What do you guys do for fun now? I will have to get back to you on that one…. Actually, since leaving
8 FOOTPRINT | November - December 2012
Jeff Brown’s charter member singlet has literally been around the world and through the mud.
RAW I will confess that we have a lot less fun. I miss you guys! What connections do you still have with RAW? We keep up with some of our close friends largely through social media, and live vicariously through the RAW website. We wish more of our friends would come see how beautiful it is in Tennessee. Is there something fun/unique about RAW back in the day that you want to share now? I still have my Vista Grande Nudist Camp T-shirt (why do you need a T-shirt in a nudist colony anyway?). Interestingly, “back in the day” those who raced in the RAW weren’t particularly shy about it. In fact, there is a photograph at the clubhouse of Richard Craft, Fireman Ken MacInnes and you by a car with the trunk open, makes me wonder if the term “junk in the trunk” got started that day. These days someone is regularly running nude 5Ks and seems to agree with you that a shirt isn’t necessary because the race shirt appears on the club ceiling within 24-hours of the race. Assuming it’s not you do you care to guess who it is? One thing I DO remember from those days is that it was generally the case that the participants looked better with clothes on – I guess God invented clothes for a reason! Though I barely had the chance to get to know him, if I were to guess, I’d say Spareribs. Did you join a running club in Tennessee? We joined the local run club but it is largely nonfunctional. Generally run by ourselves-there are some nice trails along the waterways. My biggest accomplishment is that I am the defending champ (2 yrs running) in the senior division of the Marine Corps Mud Run – gives you an idea how slow the runners are up here! What do you want everyone to know about Jeff Brown today? Nothing about me – I would like to acknowledge how important my years in RAW were to me – had some of the best times in my life with my friends there, and will never forget the memories – or my friends.

Giving Back to the Sport Steve Rush OK, we know that RAW stands for “Runners and Walkers,” but there’s no denying that there’s another important club activity doesn’t happen on the roads or trails, but on the briny deep. OK, so Lake Grapevine is a freshwater lake, just work with me here. That’s why we salute Admiral Steve Rush of the RAW Navy, also known as “Dog Dude” to most of us. When it comes to RAW ruling the Grapevine Sea (OK - Lake), Steve is the guy who makes it happen, Monday mornings, bright and early. He’s the one notifying all the RAW “able seamen” of the week’s port of embarkation. He’s the one who loads the loaner kayaks, brings ‘em down to the lake (in the dark) and lugs ‘em back again (to their home with Debbie Carpenter and Reba Becker). And I’m sure that if any pirates show up on the lake, he’ll “give ‘em a broadside.” Club members hesitant to risk the “high seas” can still see Steve in action, working the finish line at any RAW race or pitching in with the RAW White Rock crew. He’s also done his turn as a member of the RAW Board.
(third from the right) Steve Rush with his Navy crew.
But, come next summer, when the Navy leaves port, we’ll once again give Steve his proper salute. “Aye Aye, Sir.”
Dennis Dixon If you’ve had the pleasure of seeing one of RAW’s videos, then you have seen the outstanding work of RAW member, Dennis Dixon. Although Dennis isn’t a regular around the clubhouse, he can always be counted on to assist when he is called upon. When the club was working on getting the city of Grapevine’s application as a Road Runners Club of Dennis & Janet Dixon America (RRCA) Runner Friendly Community ® and an optional video submission was part of the application process, Dennis was the go-to guy for filmography. Dennis spent three hours of his Saturday morning recording footage for the video and then came up with the awesome idea to set the video to the iconic song, “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” How apropos, right? And in that genius way that Dennis thinks, he rewrote the words to the Marvin Gaye classic to showcase what we RAW members love about running out at the lake. Never mind that Dennis isn’t a regular out at the lake, he was still able to capture the right tone for the video. In addition to the time spent recording footage,
10 FOOTPRINT | November - December 2012
he was so willing to make edits and was open to suggestions to give RAW’s video the best presentation possible. We were even lucky enough to find a very talented singer to sing Dennis’s version of the song, “Runnin’ all through Grapevine.” When the idea came up to make a short video showing just how easy it is to do weekend water duty out at RAW, Dennis was once again, our go-to guy for the RAW video. When he was contacted about shooting footage for another RAW video, he was more than willing to help out in any way. He never even balked at the fact that he would need to be at the clubhouse about 5:45 AM on a Sunday. He arrived brighteyed and bushy-tailed in the bleak, pre-dawn darkness with our two water duty volunteers-in-training, mother-daughter team, Belynda and Tory Warner. If you’ve seen the video you know, Spareribs plays a key role in the video too, as the Water Duty Trainer. In addition to innocently becoming RAW’s videographer, Dennis has also become a perennial race day volunteer. Along with his wife Janet (our club secretary), Dennis is a great contributor to the club. So next time Dennis does make an appearance at a RAW event or you see him shooting video around the clubhouse, be sure and thank him for helping make RAW look good in pictures. You never know, you just might be starring in his next RAW video! Send your GBTTS nomination to media@lgraw.com
