Wait! You’re going the wrong way!

RAW Goes To the Races Thinking of running a local race? It’s lots more fun when you have a built-in crowd cheering you on. Or, if you prefer, come watch some of your fellow club members race, and do the cheering for them! Look for our table with the big RAW banner. We’ll have membership applications, race flyers, newletters, and club information to distribute. As the pictures attest, it’s great fun, and a wonderful way to get to know one another! We’ll be taking a break until January, but look for the “RAW Goes to the Races” update on the RAW website and in the next Footprint. Left: Dave Aungst strikes the classic “runner’s pose” at HEB

Left: Evey, DJ, and Evoni Darling wait for Dad (David) to finish the 10K at HEB. Evoni had just finished the 5K race.

Back row left: Mike, Scott, and Rick Sanford, Tom Zack, John Bush, Marty Metzger. Front: Tony Dominiec, Dave Aungst, Stacie Johnson. Ready to race at HEB. RAW runners and supporters turned out in numbers for these races. There were 12 racers and 5 supporters at the HEB 5K and 10K on 9/2/00; 16 racers and 3 supporters at the Fort Worth Runners Club Labor Day 5K and 15K on 9/4/00; and 15 racers and 3 supporters at the Southlake Stampede on 9/16/00. Good job, RAW!

A special thanks to those who came out to cheer on our racers, including: Gloria and Johanna Bush, Helen and Darcy Stewart, Marty Metzger, Ray Harris, Susan Barnett and Chris Banks. Unfortunately, space limited the number of runners we were able to picture, but also racing were David Ball, Walter Delaschmidt, Ann Jansen, Jennie Williams, Mary Ann Rogers, and Adam Pope.

How Fast Did You Go? Recently, I was fortunate enough to spend a Saturday morning attending the Team Texas Racing School at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. After a couple hours of classroom instruction and much anticipation, I was allowed to take 10 laps around the highbanked track in a real NASCAR racer. This was no ride along, either. I put on the racing jumpsuit, strapped on a crash helmet, climbed in the window, wedged myself into the drivers' seat, buckled the safety harness, fired up the engine and turned 10 laps as fast as I could. How fast did I go? I have no idea. You see, they put governors on the cars that limit their speeds to 150 mph. Did I get the car up to 150? I think so, but there's no way to know for sure since there was no speedometer in the car. I would love to tell everyone that I pushed the car to its limit and ran 10 laps flat out at 150, but I can't. What I can tell you is that I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I enjoyed the sights and sounds and smells. I

enjoyed the nervousness and anticipation and excitement. I enjoyed it all. I enjoyed just being able to do it. For me, it’s the same with running. I enjoy the ritual. I enjoy putting on my shoes and shorts and Cool Max T-shirt. I enjoy reading race calendars and standing at starting lines. I enjoy running by myself, but I enjoy weekend runs at the RAW clubhouse even more. I enjoy being outside and moving and working up a sweat. Honestly, I enjoy almost everything about running. I don't think I'll ever be able to impress anyone with my back of the pack speed, but that’s fine with me. Sure, it would be great to run at the front of the pack, but for now, I’m not too concerned with it. I’m enjoying myself too much to worry about speed. It’s not important how fast I go (unless I’m in a Nascar), just so long as I keep going. -Rick Sanford

Teams Stick Together at Duct Tape Duet Forty-six walkers and runners teamed up to participate in LGRAW’s first Duct Tape Duet Fun Run on September 23rd. Teams with such catchy names as “Too Slow to Know,” “Haden’s Heroes,” “Tom ’n Tom,” “Asleep on my Feet,” “Turtle and the Hare,” “Wonder Women,” “All in the Family,” and “Success,” formed up at the RAW clubhouse for instructions. One team member ran the 10K course while their partner walked the 5K, with everyone starting at the same time.

Walkers and Their Running Partners: Suzi Cope & Dave Ford Paula Hayes & Dirk Hayes Joe Luccioni and Terry Marcott Melissa Shaw & Tina Covington Lee Miller & Brian Steidinger Jackie Lane & Ann Nerney Debbie Bishop & Rich Miller

Several prizes were awarded to recognize team achievement. Joe Luccioni and Terry Marcott finished on top with the lowest combined time of 1:19:20. Team “Tom ’n Tom” (Tom Zack and Tom Byno) won the 100 to 110-year combined age group with a time of 1:24:38. Suzi

Cope and Dave Ford won the over 110-year combined age group with a time of 1:43:40. Young participants included D.J. and Evoni Darling, and Haden Lapiska. Team Eccleston (Susan and Mike) finished within five seconds of each other. It was quite a sight to see Mike sprinting in his attempt to catch his wife who was leisurely walking to the finish line. (So Mike, who finished first?) Everyone worked up quite an appetite, so we all made a beeline to the pancake breakfast at the clubhouse. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausages, and delicious bread donated by the Wildflower Bread Company were served by our gourmet chefs Barb, Judy and Kandy. (Wish they had saved some pancakes for me!) We had a near catastrophe when volunteer coordinator Barbara Martin discovered the night before the race that we were short on griddles. A last minute plea on the bulletin board resulted in no less than 15 grills, skillets, and Coleman stoves. Now that’s what I call results! -John Bush

And When We’re Not Running and Walking… We Play! Our social event for August was a poolside party held in a tropical paradise (aka Judy and Tony Dominiec’s back yard). It was a miserably hot day (weren’t they all in August?) but it began to cool down, and the folks who came to enjoy the festivities were well rewarded. Candles illuminated the evening, and the aroma of pinion wood rose from the chiminea. The water was just right, and the swimmers especially enjoyed the floating fruit tray that kept circulating around the pool. Thank you, Judy and Tony, for opening your home and creating a backyard oasis for RAW. -Kandy Kobar

We are nothing if not a club that helps one another out in time of need. Here, Dave Aungst lends emotional support to Ray Harris the day after Ray’s knee surgery.

Membership Action Committee Is Kicked Off The newly formed Membership Action Committee is up and running. Marty Metzger, Tony Dominiec, and Mike Eccleston have volunteered to serve on this committee, whose goals are to increase participation of our existing members in club activities, to attract new members, and to make sure that visitors to RAW always feel welcome. The committee has come up with a number of ideas to help meet these goals. Improving RAW’s presence at local races is the first item on our agenda. Suggestions include: • • •

Targeting races to attend that precede our RAW races Developing a kit that is easily transported Mounting newsletters and the

running and walking logs for easy viewing Displaying photos of the trail, our social events, members, etc.

In addition, several ideas are being considered for member recognition, such as initiating a “club” for runners and walkers who achieve an annual mileage or number of workouts goal. The committee is eager to hear new ideas, and welcomes anyone who would like to join our group. Perhaps you have ideas about how to welcome visitors, how to reach out to inactive members, or how to increase our visibility using the kiosks. Just contact Marty Metzger at mmetz@ix.netcom.com, and you’ll soon be put to work!

Just for Fun….

I don’t exercise at all. If God had meant us to touch our toes, he would have put them further up our body. I joined a health club last year. Spent about 400 bucks. Haven’t lost a pound. Apparently you have to show up. I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them. The advantage of running every day is that you die healthier. I like long runs, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

ly i m a F d n a ! s y d a n D e k i l r F Wa Slow Down Take a break from the usual RAW run. Bring Mom & Dad, your husband or wife, your kids, Aunt Maude, and all your friends to the clubhouse for a walking workout, followed by one of RAW’s famous Grillmaster’s Breakfasts. (The men will be doing the cooking.)

RAW Marathon Report What an Experience! The Pike’s Peak Marathon is quite an experience. It starts at 6,300 feet, climbs 7,800 feet over the next 13 miles (to a peak of 14,110 feet) and then comes back down the same trail. It’s quite a challenge to navigate over the rocks and roots. The race is extremely well organized, and of course the scenery is spectacular. What an amazing sight to look up the mountain, having reached the tree line, and see the line of runners zigzagging their way to the top of the mountain. At that point, my best friend Mariela and I still had 3 miles, 2600 feet, and an hour and a half to reach the turnaround point. The trip down the mountain was a blast. We were fortunate not to have any falls, although there were some

scary moments. After 7 hours and 47 minutes of running, we crossed the finish line hand in hand.

274th out of 1000 overall. Lee says it was a great time, and he’s ready to do it again.

It was a great experience, and while I’ll never forget it, I’m not in any hurry to do it again!

Also running the event was Terry Marcott, who teamed up with some of his old friends—oops, I mean close friends—in the masters division. “Team Hazbin’s” goal was to maintain a 6:00 pace, but they missed their mark, averaging 6:02. (Terry, you need to work on that pacing.) Their total time of 19:33:38 was spectacular, and put them in the winner’s circle. Congratulations!

-Kelly Sizelove (K1)

St. George Marathon Kelly and friend Mariela Botella: Proud Marathon Finishers

Hood to Coast RAW had two teams competing in the grueling Hood to Coast adventure run. The largest relay race in North America, it stretches 195 miles from the top of Oregon's Mt. Hood, down to the Pacific Ocean, in Seaside, Oregon.

Near the top. Kelly and Mariela are right in the middle of the picture (Oh yeah, I see them.)

Lee Miller competed with his brother and friends, with Lee running four legs. They finished in 25 hours, 36 minutes, which was good for 75th place out of 267 in their division, and

Gabe Pugliese ran the St. George Marathon, which is included as one of Runner's World 10 Most Scenic and Fastest Marathons. It begins at over 5200 ft. in the Pine Valley mountains and descends nearly 2600 ft., through scenic southwest Utah. Gabe reports that while it is a fast race, he was a little disappointed in the mostly desert scenery, and scant spectator support. However, it was still a good experience, as the granite-like finisher medal is so unique, and “I’ve never seen such short lines for the port-ajohns!” Despite his recent injuries, Gabe finished in an amazing 3:56:29. Way to go, Gabe!

And in Other Marathon News… ⇒ Dan Cole completed the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. with a chip time of 3:34:04.

This was Dan’s 43rd marathon! ⇒ Kelly Richards (K2) ran a terrific race at the Twin Cities Marathon, and felt great at the end. Several

friends and experienced marathoners helped K2 with excellent advice in the ever-present tights vs. shorts dilemma (the shorts won). She reiterates that Twin Cities is a MUST DO marathon, with outstanding scenery, organization, and crowd support. ⇒ Chris Banks, Duncan Stewart, and Lee Miller ran the Chicago Marathon, with K2 there to cheer them on. It was an especially big day for Lee, who PR’ed by over 37 minutes! It seemed that everything went his way, and although he encountered some cramps at mile 23, advice from his pals kept him running. Lee needed at 3:11 to qualify for Boston, and he finished with a 3:01. Way to go, Lee! 12

Weekend Workouts We continue to have great turnout at the clubhouse for our Saturday and Sunday morning workouts. Despite being in the racing season, we are averaging 29 runners and walkers each day. The percentage of those who walk has risen to 21%, while the number of people running longer than 10 miles has also grown to 24%. It sure is fun to be sitting, relaxing, and having a second cup of coffee as one of those runners stops in for a power gel before heading back out for another 8 miles. The bottom line is that there is always someone to run or walk your pace and distance. So come on out and join the fun!

RAW Rocks!!! The White Rock Marathon is only 5 weeks away, and for the fourth year in a row RAW will be manning an aid station at mile 17. We serve up water, sports drink and a lot of energy for the runners who at that point in their race are in need of some inspiration (or at the very least something to take their mind off the pain that is beginning to set in). RAW has won the $250 cash prize for “Most Enthusiastic” water station two years in a row… let’s make this a three-peat!

Wow, Is That Clubhouse Sparklin’ ! Thanks to a crew of 20 who stayed after their run/walk one Saturday, the clubhouse is now spotless, and free of all creatures with more than two legs! In record time, the workers emptied everything out of the clubhouse and storage shed, washed and disinfected it, and put it all back.

Josh Lowen does an awesome job of sorting our Easter eggs Thanks to our entire maintenance crew: Chris Reyher, Kandy Kobar, Barbara Martin, Joe Luccioni, Duncan Stewart, Mike Eccleston, Marty and Tia Metzger, Kat, Josh, and Matt Loewen, Don Shannon, Guy McCracken, Ken Macinnes, Jack Hase, Rick Sanford, Gary Howsam, Tim Brennan, Terry Marcott, and Eileen Fontaine. A special thank you to Duncan Stewart, who had the foresight to drive his vintage ‘57 Ford pickup (in pristine condition) to the clubhouse. We were able to take a load of trash to the closest dumpster. Great job by all!

Chris Reyher cheerfully taking direction from Barb Martin

If you know some “naugas” who would like to give their “hydes” for the benefit of the club, we sure could use a couple of chairs for our sweaty bodies! Are you SURE all this stuff came out of there???? 14
