Double Trouble Adds Training Run/Walk and Socials By Race Director Chris Morris

If you've been paying attention to the race landscape lately, you know that every race has to have a training run and walk to help engage its participants. This year, the LGRAW Double Trouble 5K and 10K is no exception.

FREE training sessions are scheduled for October 2 and 16 and will include informative programs by two of our generous sponsors. The run/walk will begin at 5:30 p.m., at the RAW clubhouse. The brief talk will follow.

A Luau Success By Diane Ferguson As one of our RAW members put it, "Who'd have thunk we were in little ole Grapevine?" The luau that took place at the beautiful home of Tom and Kim was the perfect place for a Hawaiian setting. The weather was tropical that night, the surroundings were beautiful, the food was spectacular and seeing so many new RAW members was the highlight of the evening. All and all, a good time was had by both longstanding, and new RAW members. The highlight of the evening was our very own

membership.

Thank you To all RAW water duty volunteers who take just a few minutes of their time to stock the course with cool water and Gatorade EVERY Saturday and Sunday! Without your kindness, there would be A LOT of thirsty RAW runners on the course! Lost & Found Left something at the clubhouse? Check to see if we found it. All unclaimed items are in the clear tote along the north wall of the clubhouse (just outside the bathroom).

Jay Jones being crowned as king by our hula dancer. Many participated in the lesson of how to hula to the Hawaiian story tradition. I would like to give a big shout out to fellow board member, Sakina Vidacak, and new member, Paula Brown, who assisted in creating the ambiance of being in Hawaii that evening.

Got Strava? By Greg Jesensky Most everyone is using some type of GPS watch or device. There is a new tool that all the kids are using nowadays Strava.

Strava is similar to Garmin Connect, however it also offers a club feature. The club feature could also be a useful communication tool amongst fellow RAW members who choose to use the Strava tool. I just started using it this week and from the social media side of things, it looks like it does that better than Garmin Connect. For those using Garmin watches, there is now an interface that syncs with Garmin Connect automatically every time you sync your device with your Garmin Connect account (takes less than a minute to show up). After you sign up for Strava, here are some easy steps to set it up the connection: http://runblogger.com/2014/08/howtoautosyncstravawithgarminconnect.html

Making A Change By Robin Waguespak After suffering through IT band issues and taking a break from running, I came back to running in the spring of 2013. In partnership with a friend I also began monitoring my food intake in hopes of dropping a few pounds. I was training for my first half marathon and dragging almost 200 pounds on my not quite 5 foot 4 inch frame. By early October, my friend posted a "before and after" picture of herself on Facebook and I was impressed by the results of her 20 pound weight loss. Although I was running consistently and had built up to a long run of eight plus miles, I had not lost a single pound. Motivated by my friend's progress, I decided I was going to lose 10 lbs. by November 17; the date of my first half marathon. I figured if I weighed a little less, the running would be easier on my body. When I toed the starting line, I was in fact, 10 lbs. lighter. How did I reach my goal? I had began tracking my calorie intake for all the food and beverages I

ate and drank. My Fitness Pal is a handy app and it's free! Hmmm...losing those first 10 lbs. was easy. I wanted to continue with this weight loss thing. Each month I set a weight loss goal and achieved it. Little by little, I kept losing a little more weight. My sister and fellow RAW member, Crisann Becker, refers to my weight loss as "shrinking". By midAugust 2014 I reached my goal of losing 53 pounds! Back in October when I first decided to seriously attack my weight loss shrinking, I had hoped a smaller version of myself would equate to a faster running version too. In the nine months from November to August I was able to improve my running pace from mid14 minutes per mile to a sub 11:30 minutes per mile half marathon and 10ish minutes per mile pace for runs under six miles. Not fast by most folks standards, but for me, running a sub 12 minutes per mile pace was a dream. Now I've crushed the dream and made new ones. When people say, "running is how you lost that weight", I correct them. Changing my eating habits and reducing my caloric intake is how I lost weight. Running has changed my life though. It has definitely made me stronger mentally and physically, and I've made some pretty wonderful and amazing friends along the way. God bless the fabulous ladies of RAW who took me under their wings and have helped me become a better runner. What a fabulous, supportive group! I'm also very blessed as my family supported my healthy changes and continues to support my running goals.

Committing to 26.2 By Evelyn Luccioni

Why am I doing this again after I decided not to EVER run another marathon? Well, after last year at the Palo Duro Trail Race, my dearest friends and fellow RAW members Belynda Warner, Eileen Pontaoe and Kat Sparks decided to return to Palo Duro in 2014 to run the 50K. So early this year, after thinking about it on a day I was very sick and had been unable to run for a few days, I told them I would train with them on the long runs for the company, I was feeling down and needed a race goal (not just to train for fun). Kelly "K2" Richards was at my house and we were talking about a marathon she had done that weekend. Knowing my running friends were going to train for a fall 50K and hearing "K2" talk about her marathon, I was motivated to register for a goal race of my own. So I registered for the Marine Corp Marathon lottery! To my surprise, my Marine Corp Marathon registration was accepted! Long story short, I decided to give away my running number and register to run the very popular BCS Marathon in College Station. The BCS Marathon would be a good way to visit our daughter Nicole at Texas A&M; plus she can cheer me on with her daddy! I don't enjoy training in this Texas heat, but with the RAW group that joins me at 6 a.m. each weekend, it makes the miles a lot easier. I just HOPE and pray the day of the race is 40 degrees or less and sunny. After this marathon, it will be my last one......never say never or else.....

Getting Started By Christine Bassano The difficulty of 'getting started' on anything that involves a bit of a challenge and is where I find myself right now thinking about writing this piece. By now one would think we should all be experts at 'getting started'. After all, we certainly remember the first time we decided it was going to be 'good for us' to start running (or jogging, let's say). Getting our head into that first trip around the track or the block

Evelyn running trails at the 2013 Palo Duro race!

was not easy but we did it and continued on to the second block, the second mile etc... Then the first race; the first award to get you addicted to the newly gained self esteem, and the pride you felt in the hard earned achievement. For some it was a speedy 5 or 10K, for some it shouted out "let's keep this thing going" so we headed for the long one the 26.2 miles and then for some, the need went beyond into the long...the long ultradistance! I can't talk about that needwe'll leave that to the 'crazies". (I can say that because even some of the ultrarunner spouses call them crazy so I think it's okay!) Pictured LR Christine and So for me, there came a point where I felt the need to get started swimming. After friend Diane Shubert all, I had met the 5 and 10K challenge just about every week for several years. Ran a few marathons, biked a few long ones...Now I noticed folks were doing the tri's I could run, I could bike, I could swim. I grew up 10 minutes from the Long Island shoreline, body surfing the Atlantic ocean waves every summer. Diving off he high board at the local public pool, water skiing when the family went on our summer vacation further east on Long Island in the beautiful Sag Harbor area. So the question became, why in the world did I not learn to swim properly? Brother surfed and lifeguarded....me? 25 meters across the pool and the breathing was shot. I knew this was going to be just another 'getting started' routine. So I got started at the Lifetime Fitness Masters' Swim2x/week and then off to the lake to have to swim in water OVER MY HEAD and trust my own abilities...I did it thanks to Marty and Tia Metzger calling me out to the buoy in Lake Grapevine making it look so easy, so inviting. Riiiight! Oh yes, and thanks to Gary Howsam for tootling alongside me in his kayak, just him and me, so if I failed to do the distance it would have been our secret. It all led to the first sprint tri (pool swim) and then of course to the longer course, the Olympic tri or sometimes called International distance....that's a 1500 meter swim, generally a 26 meter bike ride and a 10K run. I did it and found myself qualifying for the Nationals. I had not a clue what that all really meant except that I was invited to the Nationals being held in Milwaukee Wisconsin on August 9, 2014. I had no real intention of going until I learned that my old galpal and training partner, Diane Shubert, from back east WAS going. What a great place and way to share some quality time with an old friend whom I admire very much. She is also much more experienced at all this triathlon business, having competed in several 70.3 tri's and lots and lots of Olympic distance tri's. So register I did. I trained for several months "with a purpose"; always more meaningful. I headed off to Milwaukee with my Sherpa husband, "Jersey Mike". And a fine job he did, I might add. Qualifying for the Nationals means lots of people there are going to have lots of fancy equipment and a BIG desire to then qualify for Worlds to be held in Chicago, September 2015. Okay, I did not realize any of this until I was there at Nationals. And yes, there were lots of fancy bikes and helmets and kits however, that's' not what it was about for me. For me it was a validation that participating in sporting events such as this, does not have to end at my age (going into it I was convinced I was getting a bit past my prime for this stuff and that this would probably be my exityou know, move on to more important things in life). Well, when I entered my geographical area for the bike racking (which by the way, left no more than a sliver of space between each bikethis was the big league) I was surrounded by all these women my age, with all their fancy bikes and kits, and darn, I wasn't alone any more. Suffice it to say, I was inspired by some of their resoluteness. Not only was my age group not the oldest, we were several groups back from the oldest. Wow, I realized I had at least two more decades of this stuff if I wanted to stay in the game. That's a question for another day. There are so many more things I aspire to as I journey through this life we share, so I try to stay balanced (hence yoga back on the schedule and lots of doggie love and kisses through the Humane Society of Flower Mound and more Bible time, getting to know my Master more intimately!). I actually enjoy the 'getting started part' even though it really is the most difficult part. Milwaukee was beautiful, Lake Michigan was lovely; even has sand with volleyball going on like a real SOCAL (that's Southern California) beach.....it has a river walk and lots of great watering holes.....loved every minute of the weekend glad I got started met amazing people who at 80 plus years are still going strong! Did I qualify for Worlds in Chicago next year? Well, that is still to be determined. It's all good (and way too expensive)!

A Chance Interaction By David Ball You never know who you will "run" into at RAW. While I was at the clubhouse on a recent Saturday a man comes running in from the Gaylord hotel where he was staying. Never seen him before, but he's a distance runner from OKC. Randy Thurman is his name. He looked through our bookshelf saying he wishes HIS book was up there. Randy explained he wrote "One More Step" and it was published recently; available on Amazon. The book is a collection over 600 of runners' quotes. Randy went on to tell me one day his weight reached 200 lbs. when he had his wake up call.

He took action and decided to train for and complete a marathon. Randy began writing down the quotes he heard to encourage his running. He was grateful for the water and the chat at our very own RAW clubhouse!

Honoring Our Heroes By Joe Luccioni As many of you know I have been involved with events that honor the heroes of 9/11/2001. On August 31, 2002, the club honored me by allowing me to sponsor a 5K race which was held at Texas Motor Speedway. The express purpose was to raise funds for the Michael Lynch Memorial Foundation. Michael was one of the brave 343 firefighters that gave his life saving others and at the time of his death, he was engaged to my daughter. The event had a great turnout and the club donated $11,500.00, with this donation kicking off the fundraising efforts of the foundation. The following paragraph was in the 9/7/2014 Parade magazine. Please see what the foundation has raised over the last 12 years to benefit 9/11 victims' children. Our club should be proud of the fact that we have played a small part in their efforts. The Michael Lynch Memorial Foundation This charity has granted $4.6 million in scholarships in honor of Lynch, a New York firefighter who died in the South Tower. The scholarships are geared toward collegebound children who are children of 9/11 victims, as well as "children of active, retired, and deceased New York City firefighters." For more information visit the Michael Lynch Memorial Foundation.

Thank You Wondering who takes the time in marking the pavement with mile markers to and from the clubhouse? We know who you can thank for making this possible! A big Thank You to Jeff Barnhart! Jeff took time out of his busy day to refinish the mile markers you see along the path during your run or walk. Jeff has made our tracking of miles a lot easier and reminds us of our friendly club with a footprint stamped on each marker. Be sure to thank Jeff for his time and keeping us on our mark! Look for the fresh mile markers on your next run or walk from RAW!

Walk To End Alzheimer's Update By Ray Harris, Honorary Chairperson

Saturday, October 11, is only a few days away. There is still time to join Team LGRAW and make a difference in finding a cure for this disease. Currently 5 million people are afflicted and that number is expected to grow as the population ages. If you haven't already signed up to join the team, please consider doing so. if you can't join that morning, please donate. Go to www.alz.org/northcentraltexas and click on "Find a Walk". From there you can search for the team and make your donation. The event will kick off with a short ceremony and a few words about the disease and the cause; if you want to see me cry, this is your best chance. Talking about my Mother usually causes the water to flow. I'll do my best to get through it with a minimum of interruptions. If you have any questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact either Christine Bassano (crobymbassano@gmail.com) or me (rayharris00@yahoo.com). I hope to see many of you at Meadowmere Park on the 11th.

Couch To 5K Steps Into Action By Tony Flesch

LGRAW kickedoff the fall C25K program on September 20 with an eager group of runners and walkers. Our C25K (Couch to 5K) is a program to get people off the couch and into a healthy lifestyle through running and walking, and introduce them to LGRAW and the benefits of running with a group. Our C25K program will ease participants into running with a walk/run combo. The fall C25K program will meet each Saturday morning at the clubhouse for our group run, so if you see the C25K'ers out on the trail, or at the clubhouse, please offer them a smile, a wave, or a few words of encouragement. The C25K program will culminate with participation in LGRAW's Double Trouble 5K on October 25. Watch for the November issue of the Footprint for an update on the progress of our group. Spread the word, if you know someone that might be interested in beginning, or with a New Year's resolution, our next C25K will begin in December with a target to complete the LGRAW Bold in the Cold in January. "The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start." (John Bingham)

In Step With.... In Step With....Jay Jones What's the history of your running "habit" when did you start? How did you progress? I began running in November of 2008 after watching my daughterinlaw run a 5K. The next week I went out and ran my first 5K. Having done one training run of 2 miles, I was ready, or I thought I was. After nearly passing out at the aide station, I realized there may be more to this running than what I thought. I ran a few races after that, and made small strides toward improving as a runner. It wasn't until I joined RAW in December of 2009 that I really started to see some improvement. What does running do for you now? Running just makes me feel good, period. Being outdoors enjoying nature, while getting a workout is very relaxing. I enjoy running alone for the most part. I joke about not liking to talk when I run, and I dislike listening even more. Okay, maybe it isn't a joke.

How did you find RAW and when did you join? I found RAW on the internet in December 2009. Walked in the back door of the club on a Saturday, saw all the people standing in a circle doing announcements or singing Kumbaya, turned my butt around and went home. Came back the next day and joined immediately. What's your favorite place to run local? Anywhere? I really like the east course from the RAW clubhouse. I consider it to be the training grounds of sorts for the club. If you are on the east course, you are most likely training for something long. If forced to run on trails, I prefer Palo Duro Canyon. What day in your running career would you like to live over again? Well since training for a race is my favorite part of running, I would have to say any day on the road training. Race day is really just a crap shoot. If it's a bad day, you still have all that good training to hang your shoes on. What's your best advice for a newbie, or any runner for that matter? Try to run a notch above what you think your potential is. Leave the music at home, unless you are forced to run on a dread mill. When training for a marathon, do at least one long run of 21 miles or longer, by yourself. Make an attempt to smile at, acknowledge, and encourage fellow runners when you pass or meet them on a run.

"Try to run a notch above what you think your potential is." Jay Jones

RRCA Kelly "K2" Richards, RRCA DirectoratLarge

The 9th Annual Run@Work Day and 3rd Annual Run@School Day was held on Friday, September 19. Once again RRCA North Texas State Rep Kathryn Gleghorn and I hosted a run/walk for those who work from home, are retired or just found it easier (and probably more fun!) to run from the clubhouse. We had twodozen participants who were treated to bagels and coffee after their unusually sticky for September run/walk. Other RAW members including Suann Guthrie and Kirstin Girard ran at work with their coworkers. All six classes at Townley Elementary School in Irving, a Kids Run the Nation grant recipient and where RAW member Mindi Rice is a teacher ran at school. Mark the third Friday of September 2015, for the 10th annual Run@Work day! The RRCA thanks all 2014 donors. This list includes individual members of RAW and the club as a whole. A donation was made to the Kids Run The Nation Fund from Bold in the Cold 5K & 15K race proceeds. The KRN Fund is also the beneficiary of Double Trouble 5K & 10K and Kids K & 2K being held on October 25. April probably seems a long way off but it's only sixmonths away and not too soon to start thinking about attending the 57th Annual RRCA Convention being held in conjunction with the Drake Relays. This kicks off the Dseries of conventions: Des Moines ('15), Dallas ('16) and Detroit ('17).
