It was spectacular! We Guy McCracken's garden. RAW Board and Committees President Ray Harris President@RunnersAndWalkers.com First Vice President John Bush VP1@RunnersAndWalkers.com

Major Mike's whistle was used numerous times to quiet the crowd. We introduced the slate of candidates, passed out ballots, cast our votes, and John Bush and Marty Metzger retired to the back picnic table to tally the results. While they were at work, Kat Loewen gave her last recap as Treasurer on the financial health of the club. Not only were we able to pay the 1st six months rent on the clubhouse and distribute $2300 to the rescue groups that participated in the Hound Dog Hustle, but we still have a positive cash flow! I then took a few moments to thank everyone for the past two years, but my voice was giving out so I cut it short and introduced Ray Harris, RAW’s new

The fireworks that followed were awesome, especially when accompanied by the patriotic songs coming from the radio. The most fitting was Louis Armstrong singing “What A Wonderful Word.” It just doesn’t get any better than this. –Eileen Fontaine

The Prez Says…. As the new club President, I thought it would be a good idea to deliver some kind of “State of the Club” message through the Footprint. I can only hope that my writing is better than my running…. In the past two years, LGRAW has enjoyed tremendous success. The Board, led by Eileen Fontaine, has done a remarkable job of bringing about growth and stability. We now have three annual races in which the club can take great pride. The Hound Dog Hustle has the potential to become not only our signature event, but also one that is a “must do” for area runners. None of this could have been accomplished without the dedication and hard work of club members who are too numerous to mention. But, there is more that needs to be done. And that is going to require getting more of the membership involved. Too much of the work in the past has been undertaken by a relatively small, core group of people. We need to get more of the general membership involved in the operation of the club, as well as in our races--whether in the planning stages, as volunteers on race day, or competing in the race itself. If you don’t think you have any skills that would contribute to the betterment of the club, look to me as your role model. I have no skills whatsoever, but you still elected me to lead this club! If I can pull this off, then anything is possible for you. My goals for the next year are simple but important: • Continue to operate a club that is financially stable and viable • Increase the involvement of club members in the operations of the club • Improve our three annual races • Cultivate additional sponsors for our races in order to provide more for the charities that we support • Continue to work closely with the Parks & Recreation Department and expand that to other city agencies • Ensure that we are member friendly. This last point is one that really concerns me right now. As I look at the membership list, I see that there are a large number of members that are past due with their annual dues. If you are one of these, I have to assume that the club isn’t meeting your needs, or you would have renewed your membership. In order to have a strong, viable running club, we need to have a solid membership base. I would like to hear from any and all of you about your thoughts concerning the club. What are your ideas for making LGRAW the premiere running club in the metroplex? You can e-mail me at rayharris00@yahoo.com. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to work for you as club president. I’m excited about the possibilities for RAW, and I look forward to building on our past success. I’ll be waiting to hear from you!

CW: Breaking 20 minutes in the 5K.

K2 (Kelly Richards): How long have you been running? CW (Curtis Woodard): About 3 years.

K2: What do you do when you're not running? CW: I do my best to help my wife Katie raise our two children, Joe and Tessa. I also travel WAY too much selling Biotech products.

K2: How long have you been a RAW member? CW: Since April 2000. K2: What’s your favorite race? CW: The Bolder Boulder 10K.

K2: Where is the most unique or unusual place you've ever run? CW: Through the red light district in Amsterdam.

K2: What about your non-running life would surprise the Club members? CW: I used to be a member of Mensa.

K2: What’s your favorite running memory? CW: At mile 25 of the 2000 White Rock Marathon, two of Dallas' less fortunate citizens (bums) were having the time of their life cheering for all of us runners. It lifted my spirits and made me smile as I passed by their corner and heard them say "get your ass moving."

K2: What else would you like to add... CW: I want to thank the club for making me a more disciplined runner. Before joining RAW, I dabbled in running. I would run 15 - 20 miles a week for a month or two, then take two months off. I never really enjoyed running but it was the best way for me to keep the pounds off. Since joining RAW, I have come to enjoy running and I look forward to K2: What do you consider to be your every weekend I spend at the biggest running accomplishment? clubhouse.

So you think you’re a real runner? Take this self-assessment to find out for sure! You know you’re a REAL runner when… You get up at 4:30 am for a run to beat the heat. You know the nickname of every local runner, but have no clue as to their last name. You don’t recognize the people you run with every weekend when they “have their clothes on”. You forget your mother’s birthday, but you know the dates of the Chicago, NY, and Boston Marathons off the top of your head. Your travel with more running outfits than real ones. You notice someone’s new running shoes, but you didn’t notice their new hair color. You have more cold compresses in the freezer than ice cubes. You buy ibuprofen in the super-economy size bottle. You receive a Christmas gift from your podiatrist.

Test Your Exercise and Nutrition IQ ! The following is provided to clear up any confusion regarding the role of nutrition and exercise in a healthy lifestyle.

is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true? A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: At the gym, a guy asked me to "spot" for him while he did the bench press. What did he mean? A: "Spotting" for someone means you stand over him while he blows air up your shorts. It's an accepted practice at health clubs; though if you find that it becomes the ONLY reason why you're going in, you probably ought to re-evaluate your exercise program.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables? A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetables.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program? A: Sorry, can't think of a single one. My philosophy is: No Pain — Good.

Q: Is beer or wine bad for me? A: Look, it goes to the earlier point about fruits and vegetables. As we all know, scientists divide everything in the world into three categories: animal, mineral, and vegetable. We all know that beer and wine are not animal, and they are not on the periodic table of elements; so that only leaves one thing, right? My advice: have a burger and a beer and enjoy your liquid vegetables.

Q: What's the secret to healthy eating? A: Thicker gravy.

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio? A: Well, if you have a body, and you have body fat, your ratio

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you? A: You're not listening. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle? A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach. I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had.

It Runs In the Family

Andrew showing great running form (and looking pretty cool too!)

Andrew Ball represents a new generation of RAW. He is David Ball’s nineyear-old son who announced one day that he’d “like to run like Dad”. After joining the Grapevine Gazelles, a city summer track club for kids/teens, Andrew worked on his technique in the 800 and 1600 meters, and improved enough to qualify for State track meets in San Antonio and Houston. He topped off the summer with a Dad helps with those tremendous 5K victory at pesky safety pins the Trophy Club 4th of July Race, with a time of 23:10. Not only did this put him first in the 9-11 age group, but it also would have been good enough for first in the 12-14 age group! Congratulations, Andrew! 7
