Nature Activities w/ Greg Meyer
Kayak Fee (where applicable): $60 to instructor on first day of trip.
SOUTH BAY WILDFLOWERS California has an interesting and unusual geologic history and as a result, our hillsides bloom with rare and endemic wildflowers in Spring. This will be a slow hike uphill through the serpentine soils at the base of the Santa Cruz mountains, near Calero County Park. We will hike for about 5 miles and look for rare plants and interesting landscapes.
WILDFLOWERS OF FORT ORD The oak woodlands and vernal pools of this National Monument are the largest stretches of undeveloped coastal land along Monterey Bay and it is a great spot for Spring wildflowers. We will take an easy walk through the trees, along sandy trails, stopping to look at the many species of unusual plants and flowers that thrive here. We will hike for about 4 miles and discuss the history, ecology and future of these beautiful public lands.
ESTERO AMERICANO KAYAK Estero Americano is a State Marine Area on the northern edge of Marin County. This pristine estuary offers protected paddling with beautiful scenery, wildlife and interesting history. The only way to access the slough is by small boat and the meandering water enters a fjord-like landscape before it reaches the beach. Spend the night in nearby Bodega Bay or Sebastopol and make a weekend out of it.
ELKHORN SLOUGH SUNSET KAYAK Elkhorn Slough is one of the best places on the west coast to paddle and watch wildlife during the sunset hour. Otters, seals, sea lions and many species of birds live here and allow close approach by kayak without being disturbed. The calm waters of this protected inlet make for a perfect summer outing as the sun goes down.
PILLAR POINT HIKE Near the charming town of Princeton in Half Moon Bay, lies a beautiful headland looking out over the Pacific Ocean. We will walk uphill to take in the view and then descend slowly to the beach. At the water, we will look for an exposed reef famous for its tide pools and seashore creatures. After lunch, we hike back over the headland to our cars and complete our day, walking about 5 miles total.
