SHANGHAI NINE TREES ART CENTER - Competition with STUDIOS Architecture

Tucked into a forested area outside of Shanghai, the Nine Trees Art Center competition was for a new cultural desitination for the district of Fengxian, offering mainstream and experimental theater, musical performances, art exhibitions, fashion shows, and other events.

The Shanghai Forest Theater is envisioned as the hub of the Nanqiao New Town. Nanqiao is being planned as the political, economic and cultural center of the Shanghai Fengxian District, an important southern gateway to the Shanghai Yangtze River Delta and Pudong.

DE+ was invited to enter the competition for the new Shanghai Forest Theater complex with partner firms STUDIOS Architecture and Team 7 International. The program for the site includes a 1200-seat main theater, a 500-seat multi-purpose theater and a 300-seat theme theater, as well as administrative, logistical and other ancillary buildings. In addition, the complex will contain numerous art facilities, including an art exchange center for youth support services, art studios and a Shanghai opera culture research center.

Studios Architecture received award to design the interiors of the project, but did not receive award of the architecture.
