FINAL MAJOR PROJECT STATEMENT OF INTENT Name: Liam Hine

Blog Address: l-hine0811fmp.blogspot.com Rationale 'Minimalist & conceptually driven typographic design focusing on high-end print production and distribution technologies.’ In conjunction with this I intend to work with both design led and client led briefs - although the emphasis will be on the design led due to my experience of client led briefs last module. In addition, my design will be geared toward the production of promotional & publication based materials. This will include editorial design. Within this module I want to: 01. Develop a design practice geared toward print process and print based media. 02. Engage with screen-printing, publishing and layout. 03. Approach each brief conceptually and enjoy the process through selecting subject matter that interests me. 04. Collaborate with other designers on the course and potentially individuals within the industry. 05. Position myself so that after this year I can work in an agency and develop freelance work alongside a job. 06. Significantly increase my knowledge in typography and typographic theory. 07. Have a structured and more efficient routine. This was my downfall last module.

Subjects / Themes DESIGN & THEORETICAL 01. Sustainability: can high-end print processes be sustainable? 02. Sustainability: can print distribution technologies be sustainable? 03. The role of typography in identity: can a typeface convey human emotion? 04. Language theory: do regional dialects help to establish our identity? 05. Minimalism: to what extent can legibility, readability and clarity be achieved through this? 06. Swiss design: an investigation into how effective Swiss design is in communicating a message / solving a problem. 07. Experimental format (publication): form follows function, or does it? What is more important within publication and editorial design - the physical interaction or visual interaction? Why? 08. Scale: how does this impact upon the clarity of the intended message and what is appropriate for any given scale? LEISURELY 09. Music genres: subcultures within the music industry and how we convey our identity through them. 10. Male fashion: to what extent do we identify with people through the things that we wear? 11. Annoyances: a day-by-day investigation into what things I consider annoying. 12. Do computer games really impact on a child’s thought process / behavioural patterns?

Design Disciplines / Creative Development 01. Typography: using typography as a means to convey human emotion for identity. Also as a vehicle to deliver an idea or communicate a message in a minimal, legible and concise manner. 02. High-end print: exploring design in preparation for high-end print processes. How do these processes add value to a product/piece of design and how do they help to achieve the communication of an idea / message. How do people interact with the tactile qualities of high-end print finish? 03. Screen-printing: The limitations of design for manual print. Exploring how people interact with the tactile qualities print, especially within limited edition. 04. Grid systems: Implementing different grid systems and grid theories in order to‌ 05. Layout: Explore how experimental layout can maintain clarity and a clear delivery of message. 06. Experimental publication: The physical interaction of a publication against the visual interaction. Exploring which is more important and how they can work together to deliver a clear message or solve a problem.

Practical Skills / Workshops – what, why and when? 01. Advanced workshops on: InDesign and Quark Express in order become more competent in experimental layout and design for comprehensive publication. 02. Screen-printing: workshops to explore and improve techniques in manual print processes. This will improve quality and work rate / efficiency. My interests also sit within limited edition and peoples desire for it. 03. Grid systems: an understanding of fundamental and complex grid systems will allow for a comprehensive investigation into experimental layout for publication design. 04. Print finish: preparing design for print process within the industry and understanding how this is done effectively and efficiently. Also, how can high-end print finish be sustainable and a viable option considering the current climate we are in both ethically and financially. 05. Delivery/Distribution: what are the most effective methods of distribution for print based design. How are they sustainable and affordable? What methods are actually available and most appropriate given different contexts?
