Welcome

Final Year Projects

+ Post University CAD

The cove gets the name from its oval-like shape, grainy texture and sand-like colouring. This minor project aimed to explore the home office work trends alongside the rise and use of tablet technology. The definitive outcome of this project was to analyse the material choice and performance of current tablet stands and their functions in order to improve on a very saturated market. The result of this is a luxury tablet desk accessory which promotes organisation and tablet work flow efficiency.

Provenance celebrates the former life and history of reclaimed wood products. Showcasing their character and defects whilst using both modern and traditional manufacturing methods to create a unique and aesthetic piece of furniture. This desk features reclaimed parquet flooring and timber joists recovered from a Oxford University College beside other various hardwoods. Giving these characterful pieces a new purpose past their original application.

Concept Development Journeyy

Using both AutoCAD and Solidworks I modelled my four concepts before laser cutting them onto 5mm grey board. I then selected the 4th concept (Desk, last on the right) as i believed it could include a larger variation of reclaimed wood products. The bottom four images are the final developed concept. To save space and knees I switched the leg joints to their final position as seen in the final two solidworks renders.

Manufacturing Provenance

Having spent my year in industry working with a wood waste social enterprise in Oxfordshire I visited many sites where wood rich in history needed to be carefully collected. This included the recovery of oak parquet tiles and pitch pine hardwoods from Baliol College of Oxford University. Having sourced this during my placement year, I returned to Oxford Wood Recycling in Januar 2019 to begin to production and manufacture of my final year major project. Provenance.

Part Two

Post Uni CAD Projects

The Wooden Spatula

For this first Keyshot render I followed a YouTube tutorial by Will Gibbons (@willgibbonsdesign) on creating a realistic procedural wood material for a wooden spatula model. The right-hand page shows the material graph created in order to produce this unique wooden texture and outcome.

The Wooden Spatula

iPhone 11 & Plastic Case

For this next Keyshot render I followed a YouTube tutorial by Esben Oxholm (@esbenoxholm) whereby he assisted me in developing my knowledge of creating stained plastics. I used this tutorial to create this textured iPhone 11 case and the following page features the material graph and all the chosen nodes.

Classic Formula One

A friend from my time at university, a certain NTU CAD tutor, Liam Martin (@ldmartin) who my class and I had a number of tutorials with helped me out with this render. Following his “falling rain tutorial on YouTube I followed the steps he took to produce this render of a classic F1 car within a cube of falling rain whilst sitting ready on wet tarmac.

Classic Formula One

There was no material graph but, all the settings and steps that I took feature within Liam’s tutorial. The image above shows the rain only falling within the cube whilst the puddles on the floor were a texture map added to the bump of the ground plane.

Provenance

Provenance

For this next render I used my major project CAD model as the main prop. The project was named “Provenance and the project brief was set to celebrate the character of historical reclaimed wood products. It also features in the previous section of this portfolio. I followed two YouTube tutorials to create this Keyshot scene. The first was by Chris Rams (@chrisrams_) who I followed to create this awesome wood floor material and Sam Gwilt (@samdoesdesign) whose tutorial along with his Victorian wood panel texture (right) helped me produce this unique and awesome wall detail.

Fuzzy Chair

Fuzzy Chair

This render was part of a render weekly Instagram challenge whereby we had to texture a model of our own choice with the new fuzz feature within Keyshot, and then post what we were able to produce. Included above it the material graph and label of the model in my Keyshot render.

Heineken Bottle

Heineken Bottle

The final Keyshot render of this 2020 portfolio features a fresh and ice cool Heineken bottle of beer. Following another of Liam Martin’s tutorials (@ldmartin) I was able to replicate and produce my own ice cool steam and condensation texture on the surface of the glass.

Profile Name – Liam Garay Design motivation and inspiration – I am a considerate designer. As seen in my two final year projects I am deeply interested in user ability and interaction and believe that all products should consider every potential user. I am also incredibly interested about sustainable materials and manufacture and again believe every product can and should be manufactured in a clean and considerate manner.
