To t h e e ast of th e coastal hills lies the broa d floodpla in of the Waikato Ri ver, a l an d sc ap e o f larg el y p asto ra l farmlan d created by Europe a n se ttlers through the dra i n in g o f exten sive n at u ral swamp s.
