To tell these stories—and evolve as storytellers—we are seeking and applying best practices, feedback, and advice. One of our principle mentor’s many well-founded edicts is that every story should be told from the perspective of a victim, villain, or hero. With acknowledgement to Dr. Suess, each story ought to have a “WHO.” However, no matter how much sage advice we get or how mighty our Veteran crew, we cannot possibly track down the innumerable stories and valuable information that will enhance living the Liberty Life. That’s where you come in. You share the story and we’ll tell The Liberty Coast. Here’s how: Visit LibertyLifeMedia.com/Submissions and submit:

hat is a “Boomer”? Many of our Liberty Life readers know a “Boomer” is the nickname of a nuclear-powered submarine capable of launching intercontinental ballistic missiles. Did you know that the Sailors who crew those submarines also share the same name? The Boomer’s mission is to deter a nuclear missile attack on the U.S. by other nations. Ballistic Missile Submarines (SSBN’s) are the sea-based leg of the nuclear triad of deterrence supporting the land-based and air-launched missile legs. The U. S. Navy has 14 Ohio class SSBN’s which accomplish their deterrence mission through their stealth and the threat of their Trident II weapon system. The Ohio class is incredibly quiet; they operate submerged and undetected. Each SSBN can carry 24 Trident II missiles. Each missile can carry eight warheads that can hit separate targets between 4,000 and 7,400 miles away. The math will show 192 warheads—some of them nuclear—coming from each undetected submarine. Deterrence, indeed! A Boomer’s mission is one of vigilance, typically keeping them at sea for extended periods. As such, each Boomer is staffed with rotating, double crews—Blue and Gold—allowing the vessel to continuously pursue its objective while providing crew rest and training. So, where do Boomers live? While the Navy will tell you that Boomers live undetected at sea, six of the SSBNs and their crews are based at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay during their periods of maintenance and modernization. Kings Bay, KBay, or “NSB” is just north of the Florida state line near historic St Mary’s, Georgia. Kings Bay is a one-stop-shop for all things related to covertness underwater with an entire community of maintenance, repair, training, and family support entities to keep the Boomer fleet operating, subs stocked with Trident missiles and crews. While the base is nearby, the only submarine you will see is at the front gate: the retired USS George Bancroft (SSBN 643). There are many layers of barriers—to include an exceptionally large Marine security force and the northern hemisphere’s largest covered dry dock—preventing access to and unauthorized prying eyes from this national security asset.

T How to Find Your Old Military Buddies After You Get Out edited by Stephanie Thompson

L

ooking for an old military buddy or service mate? In today’s connected society, it’s easier than ever to locate someone, no matter how many years have gone by. Recently Jim Absher of Military.com shared several ways to conduct your search. You can reconnect with others, or just catch up on the lives of people you may have served with. Government Organizations A good starting point is the government and military branches. You can inquire about upcoming reunions and people who served at various commands. •The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA.gov/FAQ) can forward a message to a Veteran, providing the Veteran has filed a claim with VA and their current address is on record. •The Army’s SoldierForLife program (SoldierForLife.army.mil) offers a lot of helpful information for both retired and Veteran soldiers, including access to the magazine “Echoes.” •Navy Retired Activities (Public.navy.mil) offers a wealth of information for retirees and Veterans, as well as a link to reunions and access to the “Shift Colors” magazine. •Air Force Retiree Services (retirees.af.mil) has a website that provides several helpful links, including information about reunions as well as access to the “Afterburner” magazine for Air Force retirees. •The Marine Corps’ “Leatherneck” magazine (mca-marines.org/leatherneck) has links to unit reunions, as well as helpful information for retirees and Veterans. •The Coast Guard, United States Public Health Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have an official retiree magazine, the “Long Blue Line” (longblueline.org), for all three. It lists reunions, as well as more information for retirees. Veterans Directories and Locators from Other Organizations •The Interactive Vietnam War Memorial from Footnote.com enables visitors to search the Wall for people they know and pay tribute by adding photos, comments and stories of those who lost their lives during the Vietnam conflict. •The Directory of Veterans Service Organizations (va.gov) is a short list of service organizations that may offer reunion listings or locator services. The American Legion (legion.org) and Veterans of Foreign Wars (vfw.org) both have magazines that contain lists of reunions and more. Facebook Facebook may well be the quickest way to look up your old military buddies. You can search for anyone by name and send them a message directly, or search Facebook groups. There are Facebook groups for current and former military bases, units and ships, commands, tenant commands and even groups of people just looking to reminisce. If you’ve been thinking about your old service mates, they may be thinking of you, too. Take a few moments to do a search and reach out. You just might make their day!

he usage of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly called drones, has risen in recent years. In the past year alone, more than 1.7 million drones have been registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The total hobbyist fleet is expected to reach 4 million drone operators by 2021. As a result, drone operators must be aware of the changing restrictions on the use of drones in public places and on federal lands. To ensure the safety and security of Naval Air Station Jacksonville (NAS Jax) assets and personnel, drone operations within a five-mile radius of the base and a three-mile radius of Outlying Landing Field Whitehouse must be coordinated with the base’s air operations department and FAA. In order to operate a UAS on a Navy installation, authorization from the commanding officer is required. Flying drones for recreational purposes can be a lot of fun, but it can also be dangerous. All drone pilots must thoroughly understand the rules and safety precautions where they fly. First, check with base operations and FAA. Never fly near ships or other aircraft, always ensure you know the latest policies and rules, and never fly over groups of people. Other rules for recreation flyers include: * Register and mark drone * Fly drone only for recreational purposes * Fly at or below 400 feet above ground level * Obtain authorization before flying in controlled airspace * Keep drone within visual line-of-sight (LOS) * Do not fly at night unless lighting allows for maintaining LOS * Give way and do not interfere with manned aircraft * Never fly over any person or moving vehicle * Never interfere with emergency response activities * Never fly under the influence * Do not operate drone in a careless/reckless manner

To help drone users safely operate their aircraft, the FAA has published guidelines regarding recreational drone use at https://www.faa.gov/uas/ and https://udds-faa.opendata.arcgis.com. They have also created the B4UFLY app to help pilots safely operate their drones by providing no drone zones around your GPS location. It also provides a flight planning function so drone users can ensure a safe and successful flight. The Department of Defense (DoD) supports civilian law enforcement investigations and the prosecution of unauthorized UAS operations over military installations. Operators who do not comply with FAA guidelines can be charged by the U.S. Government with criminal violations, civil penalties, and have FAA certificates or authorizations revoked to operate unmanned aircraft. The DoD may also take security actions that result in the interference, disruption, seizure, damaging, or destruction of unmanned aircraft considered to pose a safety or security threat to protected DoD assets. For more information on drone operations aboard the installation, contact Lt. Greg West at Gregory.T.West@navy.mil. To report suspicious activities, contact the NAS Jax watch commander at (904) 542-3222. LIBERTYLIFEMEDIA.COM | AUGUST 12, 2020 VOL. 1 / ISSUE 3

Calling military community members who have recovered from the coronavirus; the Defense Department is asking you to roll up your sleeves and donate your blood to help in the fight against COVID-19. It’s part of the department’s effort to collect 10,000 units of convalescent plasma that will be used to treat critically ill patients, to support the development of an effective treatment against the virus, and to increase operational readiness of our combat forces. When a person contracts SARS-CoV-2—the virus that causes COVID-19—their immune system creates antibodies to fight the virus. These antibodies are found in the plasma, the liquid part of the blood. Through the blood donation process, this plasma is collected from a donor who has recovered from COVID-19 and may be transfused into a sick patient who is still fighting the respiratory infection. The FDA authorized the use of convalescent plasma as an investigational treatment for patients with moderate or severe COVID-19 infections. Patients fully recovered from COVID-19 are the only ones who qualify to be a convalescent plasma donor. Department of Defense personnel and their families, as well as non-DoD civilians with access to collection facilities on installations, are welcome to donate. To help with this mission, the Armed Services Blood Program is conducting a blood drive at Dewey’s aboard NAS Jacksonville on August 19th and 20th, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. From this drive, the blood collected will be separated into two components: the donor’s red blood cells and their plasma. The plasma will be used for the convalescent plasma program and the red blood cells will go towards the Armed Services Blood Program’s ongoing mission of providing lifesaving blood for forward deployed troops and patients in military hospitals worldwide. Donors should make an appointment and can register online at militarydonor. com, search code NASJAX. For more info, you can call 706-787-1014 / 3234. To be eligible to donate you must: Be at least 17 years old Weigh more than 116 pounds Must be symptom-free for 14 days

SPEED SHOPPING

simple steps trim time on your commissary trip by Kathy Milley

DeCA Corporate Communications

G

rocery shopping can be a time-consuming task to squeeze into an already busy schedule. But going in armed with a game plan and an understanding of how to efficiently navigate your commissary will make your experience quicker, easier, and much more enjoyable. And it might save you a little money, too. “Often taking some time to explore your commissary can be beneficial— to see what new products are on the shelves or taking time to talk to department managers,” said Army Command Sgt. Maj. Tomeka N. O’Neal, DeCA’s senior enlisted advisor to the agency director. “But other times you really need to get in and get out quickly. Using these tips will help you efficiently whiz around the store and get all your weekly shopping done in no time at all.” 1. Create a master plan The most effective way to cut time from your shopping trip is to plan. Choose what meals you plan to make during the week and jot down needed ingredients. Then check your pantry, refrigerator and cabinets, crossing out the items you already have on hand. Sort the remaining items on a shopping list by category. When you get to the store, you’ll know exactly what to buy and where everything is located. Use [our downloadable] Weekly Meal Plan Worksheet to make it even easier, [found on commissaries.com by searching for “Speed Shopping”]. As you are shopping, you might see an item that sparks an idea for an additional dinner that may need several ingredients. Once the inspiration hits, place the item in the child’s seat of the cart as a reminder that you need to pick up the other ingredients or, if you have a pen, jot them down on your list under the appropriate department. 2. Look up Sales and Recipes Ahead of Time Before going to the commissary, look at the sales flyer on commissaries. com to find savings on the items on your list. If a specific brand is on sale, make sure to jot that down beside the item on your shopping list. It will save you time in the store if you know exactly what brand is on sale. Commissaries.com also offers many recipes that will help with your weekly meal plan.

director. Be sure to check your store website for any COVID-19 operational updates. 5. Don’t Shop Hungry This is a fundamental rule to help you save money when grocery shopping, but it is just as effective when trying to save time. Hunger can be a distraction when you are trying to get in and out of the store as quickly as possible. 6. Consider CLICK2GO CLICK2GO, the online shopping and curbside pickup service, available at select locations is an easy way to save time. Shop from the comfort of your own home and schedule a pick up time. The commissary staff will do all your shopping and have it ready to load in your car when you drive up to the pick-up location.
