Dean’s Note Spring 2018 has been a semester of reflection. I’ve been contemplating where we have been and where we are going, both in our profession and in our school.

The legacy of our profession is as rich and diverse as nurses are today. Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing, would be honored by the road we have taken. Her understanding of both the art of caring and the science of research is the core of what nursing has become.

Though the field may have started in the dark corridors of an army hospital riddled with rodents and insects, nursing education has brought to light the impact a single nurse can have on the health of one person, one community, or an entire nation.

Over the past 30 years, the legacy of the Liberty University School of Nursing (LUSON) has grown to be rich and diverse as well. We have been led by great faculty like Dr. Linda Miller, whose vision gave birth to the nursing program; Mrs. Barbara Knuckles, who helped build our simulation labs; Dr. Hila Spear, who started the MSN program; and Dr. Deanna Britt,

who kept us centered on the heart of God and served as dean during our transition from a department to a school of nursing.

Today, Liberty graduates are serving as medical missionaries, working in highly ranked hospitals across the nation, and leading around the world. Our students seek opportunities to care for those in Africa and South America as well as domestically. They do both small things that impact patients and research that influences health care on a large scale.

We decide today what our legacy will be 30 years from now. I believe our legacy will be to carry on with Nightingale’s lamp securely in our hands. Our light will be seen through our service to each other, to our profession and patients, and to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Psi Delta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International

by Shanna Akers, EdD, MSN/ MBA-HC, RN, CNE In October 2016, after several years of hard work, the Liberty University Nursing Honor Society officially became the Psi Delta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau with over 200 active members!

Since launching, the chapter has participated in the university’s Research Week, hosted multiple events encouraging research, and celebrated life while learning resiliency skills. Additionally, Psi Delta partnered with the School of Education, School of Behavioral Sciences, and Helms School of Government to support local foster children during the holiday season.

At the Fall 2017 induction ceremony, 79 students from our bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs became members.

Due to the high levels of interest from our online students, we will add a second induction ceremony coinciding with graduation.

HIS Voice — Speaking Up for Poverty

God speaks often of the poor and needy in the Bible. He commands us to speak up on their behalf. Proverbs 31:8-9 says, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the right of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

His voice has become our call to action.

He tells us to come alongside others. In the coming months, that’s exactly what our faculty will do as we complete the

“Bridges Out of Poverty” training. This training provides social, health, and legal professionals with tools to understand poverty by studying the following topics:

by Sharon Kopis, EdD, MS, RN, FNP-C, CNE The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program continues to grow and produce nurse leaders and advanced practice clinicians who are prepared to lead innovative change, translate evidence into practice, and improve safety and quality for health care systems, patients, and communities.

Faculty Spotlight — Dr. Dorothy L. Murphy

For Dr. Dorothy Murphy, God’s work through Esther serves as a constant and compelling truth — that the Lord positions His children for “such a time as this” (Esther 4:14). The account recorded in Esther inspires Dr. Murphy to “maintain a vigilance and eagerness to serve where the Lord calls.”

Dr. Murphy serves as an associate professor of nursing in the Family Nurse Practitioner/ Doctor of Nursing Practice program. She is certain of the Lord’s purpose for her at LUSON, “I can think of no greater mission than to serve at LUSON training the next generation of nurse practitioners. I find great joy inspiring these young men and women to be the hands and feet of Christ.”

Prior to joining the inaugural faculty of the DNP program in 2013, Dr. Murphy held clinical and academic positions at Georgetown University Hospital Division of Cardiology and the Georgetown University School of Nursing.

Dr. Murphy has 10 years of cardiac experience and enjoys working one-onone with patients to improve their heart health by discovering “what matters most to the patient.”

She shares her knowledge and experience in cardiology with advanced practice nurses, students, and patients. She coauthored “The Advanced Practice Nurse Cardiovascular Clinician,” a textbook to help clinicians manage common cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, ischemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, and heart failure.

An associate member of the American College of Cardiology and actively involved on the cardiac care team, Dr. Murphy serves as a content advisor for CardioSmart, an interactive web-based platform that provides education and patient self-management technologies.

The 2017 Post-BSN-DNP/FNP graduates have a 100 percent first-time pass rate for the FNP certification exam and had a 100 percent employment rate upon graduation. Nine of the 2018 Post-BSNDNP/FNP students have tested, and they also earned a 100 percent first-time pass rate on the exam.

In Fall 2018, LUSON will offer two new DNP programs — an online Post-MSNDNP with Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and an online one-year postgraduate PMHNP certificate program.

The degree program will enroll MSNprepared, licensed, and nationally certified nurse practitioners who are seeking to add the PMHNP training, and the certificate program is designed for postgraduate nurse practitioners who wish to add the PMHNP skill set. Both programs meet the educational requirements for PMHNP national certification.

Currently, the DNP program, which is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, offers two pathways — a blended post-BSN to DNP with Family Nurse Practitioner program and an online post-MSN to DNP program for clinical or administrative nurse leaders.

MSN Program

by Diane Bridge, EdD, MSN, RN Since its inception in 2001, the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program has continued to grow.

In Fall 2017, we started our MSN in Nursing Informatics and partnered with the School of Business to offer two new dual degree programs: • The MSN/MBA pairs the MSN in Nursing Administration with the Master of Business Administration.

• The MSN/MSHA combines the MSN in Nursing Administration with the Master of Science in Healthcare Administration.

Alumnus Spotlight — Josh Fish

Student Highlight MSN students Tiffany Mayhorn and Cathy Hayes presented posters in The Virginia Henderson Research Symposium at Centra.

Their posters highlighted research from PACU at Centra.

Faculty Highlights Dr. Tonia Kennedy recently completed a Post-Master Certificate in Nursing Informatics at Chamberlain University.

Dr. Kennedy is the lead faculty for NURS 521 Issues & Informatics course and is developing the new capstone course for the informatics concentration.

Dr. Kim Brown recently became certified as a nurse educator through the National League for Nursing. Dr. Brown serves as an instructional mentor for MSN faculty and is lead faculty for several MSN courses.

Raised in West Africa where his parents served as missionaries, Josh Fish became interested in a medical career while in the Coast Guard. “Through prayer and seeking the Lord’s wisdom, He showed me that nursing was what He had for me. … Not only do I love the diversity in specialties that nursing offers, but I also love being at the bedside,” Fish explained.

Fish’s search for nursing schools originally led in other directions, but good friends introduced him to Liberty University. “The more I began to learn about LUSON, the more I realized how they truly used nursing as a way to minister to others ... [and] I saw how much the faculty, staff, and students truly care about people. These factors, along with LUSON’s dedication to academics and clinical proficiency, made the decision for my nursing education easy,” he said.

Throughout his time in LUSON, Fish became engrained in the school’s culture.

He explained, “In every aspect, the culture of LUSON is based on Christ’s example and instruction to love others. Faculty, staff, and students within LUSON have truly formed an environment that is committed to supporting and encouraging one another.”

“From the first time I interacted with Josh, it was obvious that he was a man of character. Josh serves from his heart.

I have been blessed by Josh throughout his time in LUSON,” said Tracey Turner, BSN program chair.

While at Liberty, Fish earned his Critical Care Certificate, completing 144 clinical hours in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Duke University Hospital. He now uses those skills in the PICU at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Va. Turner affirmed, “The PICU patients and parents will truly be blessed by his quality care and compassion.”

Simulation Center Seeks Accreditation

The LUSON Simulation Center is seeking accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). The 14,000-square-foot center provides baccalaureate- through doctoral-level nursing students space, equipment, and personal guidance to increase skill performance through hands-on practice in a safe environment.

Through the simulation center, nursing students collaborate with peers from the Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM), the American Sign Language & Interpretation program, and the School of Aeronautics to work through real-world scenarios.

Additionally, LUSON students participate in deliberate practice, skill days, and simulation events with high-fidelity manikins, standardized patients, and task trainers to promote competent, safe nursing care. Simulation activities provide hands-on experience to correlate classroom knowledge to the clinical setting and encourage critical thinking at the patient bedside.

SSH is the largest health care simulation accrediting body in the world and has certified over 100 programs in 10 countries. The School of Nursing Simulation Center processes and frameworks are based on SSH standards and comply with the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) standards of practice. Full accreditation is anticipated.

Student Nursing Association Update

In Fall 2017, LUSON administration made a landmark investment by purchasing state and national student nursing association memberships for all juniors and seniors. These memberships offer students benefits such as scholarships, career planning assistance, leadership development, and community outreach opportunities.

With over 400 members from Liberty, our Nursing Student Association (NSA) has an opportunity to see multiple students placed in leadership positions at the state and national levels and share their vision for the future of the profession.

In addition to participating in state and

national forums, we are also revamping the NSA to offer students at every level more opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. During the fall semester, our chapter had a change in leadership, set new goals, identified ways to offer more student support, and hosted several events, including an Afternoon Snack Shack, Connection Fair, Milk and Cookies Event, and a Merry Movie Night. We also participated in many community outreach events, including the Homecoming parade (LUSON won the Homecoming float contest!), the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Teddy Bear Clinic, holiday philanthropy, and Healthy U (Mindful Mondays, Wellness Wednesdays, and Thankful Thursdays).

Mission Moments — Notes from Africa

Kenya School of Nursing pediatric faculty and students traveled to the Jesse Kay Children’s Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where they spent 10 days over Spring Break volunteering and setting up pediatric clinics in neighboring villages. The hospital, part of the Happy Life Children’s Home

ministry, is a Christian-based health service to underserved children in the Nairobi area. Liberty University nursing students in their sophomore, junior, and senior years prepared for these cross-cultural trips using intense self-examination and exercises to improve their cultural intelligence.

“It was so special to see the mothers’ faces as we showed them their babies’ heartbeat and pointed out the little hands and feet. … Life in its purest form was shown repeatedly, and every time I was in awe of God’s creation.”

Rwanda Over Spring Break, students from the School of Nursing and the College of Osteopathic Medicine traveled to Cyangugu, Rwanda, to serve in the Mont Cyangugu Health Center. This trip marks the sixth year of a partnership between LUSON and the health center, and this year, the students focused on women’s health, specifically, prenatal care. Thanks to a partnership between the School of Nursing, Office of Academic Affairs, and Office of Spiritual Life, the team delivered a stateof-the-art portable ultrasound machine to the center.

Students traveling with Drs. Kathryn Miller and Tonia Kennedy and a local health care team canoed across Lake Kivu to bring ultrasound technology to the Gihaya Island health post. During the first day of clinics, 105 adults and 85 children were seen in addition to the prenatal clinic patients. Health education sessions, as well as HIV, glucose, and hemoglobin screenings, were conducted for adults.

Children were assessed by the nursing students for malnutrition. Expectant mothers were examined and shown the ultrasound picture of their baby’s heartbeat.

Liberty University Provost and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Ron Hawkins stated, “Liberty has enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the Rwandan people for a number of years now. We have sent

faculty to train counselors to minister to the people of Rwanda, and we have sent nurses and doctors to serve their physical needs. It is now our great privilege to donate an ultrasound machine to the Mont Cyangugu Health Center. We do so with the heartfelt prayer that it will improve the health of many mothers and their newborns in the years ahead. As provost of Liberty, I am grateful to our nursing faculty for engaging in this opportunity and for the privilege I have of assisting them with this wonderful achievement.”

Students from the School of Nursing travel annually to villages surrounding the Cyangugu Health Center at the invitation of the Anglican Church Diocese. Student nurses work sideby-side with local health care teams, experiencing the challenges of rebuilding a health care system in a post-genocidal culture. While interacting in the country, nursing students and faculty immerse themselves in the community health care system, comparing and contrasting perspectives on global health. Nursing students are afforded the opportunity to assess and interact with disease processes less common in the United States. Sixteen undergraduate students in their sophomore, junior, and senior years participate in this global service learning.

BSN Overview

by Tracey Turner, EdS, MSN, RNC-OB The residential BSN program has experienced a period of growth over the past several years. Currently, the program has over 600 students and, for the first time in program history, has offered spring admission to 50 students.

One thing that sets LUSON apart from other nursing schools is the number of clinical hours that its students complete. Liberty offers about 300 more hours per student than the state minimum requirement, and students have opportunities to do clinical rotations regionally in Roanoke and Richmond as well as internationally in Haiti, Kenya, and Rwanda. The Lord has greatly blessed LUSON students with opportunities to serve those most in need around the world!

In October, LUSON welcomed the current sophomore class during the Dedication Ceremony in the new Center for Music and the Worship Arts, Concert Hall. The students circled the stage, holding their lit Nightingale lamps, singing “The Healing One.” The December 2017 graduation was also held in the concert hall for 69 future nurses.

Please pray for them as they complete their preparation for the NCLEX-RN exam and transition into the nursing workforce.

Over the past five years, LUSON graduates have averaged better than a 92 percent pass rate on the NCLEX. In 2017, the pass rate was 93.4 percent, and the BSN program has a 98 percent job placement upon graduation.

RN to BSN Program

Shannon Miles — registered nurse, 2013 LUSON graduate — is perinatal nurse navigator for Centra Health in Lynchburg, Va. She recently shared about her journey into nursing and helping expectant women and their unborn children.

by Diane Bridge, EdD, MSN, RN Since 2005, the RN to BSN program has provided licensed, practicing nurses the opportunity to earn their BSN degree completely online in as little as two years. The program has grown to over 1,000 students, and we’ve continued to improve our program to meet the needs of our students.

This fall, we developed two new areas of study — an RN-BSN-MSN track and a global studies concentration.

The RN-BSN-MSN allows nurses to earn their BSN and MSN degrees in as little as 36 months. Partnering with the MSN program offers less coursework and an overall cost savings. RNs who select this option have three MSN tracks to select from: education, administration, and informatics.

The global studies program will be offered to our RN-BSN students starting in Spring 2019. This concentration emphasizes incorporating foreign and domestic missions into a nursing practice

Faculty Highlight RN-BSN Professor Brandi Rawlins recently developed a New Grad Mentor Program. Professor Rawlins presented her poster at Centura’s 10th Annual Evidence-Based Practice, Research, and Innovation Conference and was awarded first place. Professor Rawlins has submitted her abstract to the 2018 ANCC Magnet Conference.

When Shannon began as a nurse navigator, a need to address opioid abuse during pregnancy surfaced. Her passion for this population inspired her to found the Oak Lane Recovery Home, a local peer recovery group (Roads to Recovery), and, most recently, the NEST (Newborn Extended Stay and Treatment).
