Dean’s Note In nursing, science is interwoven with art.

Both must be present for our profession to continue impacting individuals, communities, and nations. At the Liberty University School of Nursing, we have a legacy of compassion and excellence.

This edition is dedicated to how nursepatient connections influence their outcomes. In the coming pages, you will read how pain management is impacted by the current opioid crisis and how nursing students are making a difference. The care of our patients should be holistic, tending to physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. As nurses, we are uniquely able to care for all aspects of our patient, and we should never look past their spiritual needs. Patients and their families are cared for by nurses who use both their science and their art at each encounter.

At LUSON, our legacy of excellence is supported through many endeavors. We are grateful for the blessings of both God and man as we continue to grow our legacy in the classroom, in the boardroom, and at the bedside. As students, alumni, and faculty, your part in our legacy — in His legacy — is invaluable. Your dedication to caring for patients, nurses, and each other truly represents His calling to love one another.

Faculty Achievements Our Liberty University School of Nursing faculty are making strides in their fields of study, publishing articles, furthering their education, and receiving recognition for their successes.

Dean Shanna Akers was recognized as an Outstanding Nurse by Our Health Virginia for her passion and service in the field. She was also selected by the AACN as one of 30 academic nursing leaders nationwide to participate in the 2018 AACN-Wharton Executive Leadership Program.

Assistant Professor Kat Rivera was nominated

by Our Health Virginia as an Outstanding Nurse for her work as an educator in pediatrics and her determination to complete her doctoral degree.

Dr. Kim Brown, Dr. Heather Humphreys, Dr. Diane Bridge, and Dr. Elizabeth Whorley published a research article in the Journal of Christian Nursing (JCN), “Do Baccalaureate Nursing Students from an Evangelical Christian University Perceive Themselves as Prepared to Deliver Spiritual Care as New Graduate Nurses?”

Elizabeth Whorley completed and graduated with her Ph.D. in Nursing Education, focusing

her dissertation on “The Implementation of the Essential Competencies for EvidenceBased Practice in Baccalaureate Nursing Education.”

Dr. Heather Humphreys passed her CNE exam.

Liberty University MSN professor Kristene Diggins published her article, “The Heart of Nursing: Good Listening,” in the Journal of Christian Nursing.

Brandi Rawlins, MSN, RN (online RN-BSN), was recognized for her podium presentations.

Tracey Turner, EdS, MSN, RNC-OB, defended her EdD credentials with her dissertation, “The Relationship Between Test of Essential Academic Skills and Nursing Final Course Grades for Sophomore Students in a Residential, Undergraduate, Pre-licensure Bachelor of Science Nursing Program.”

Christina Weaver, MSN, RNCMNN, CCE, graduated in 2016 from Liberty’s School of Nursing. She is currently a nurse educator for Women’s Services (maternal/newborn) and has been a member of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses and joined their first Educational Advisory Committee.

Michelle Barr, BSN, RN, was recognized by Danielle Englund of the American Red Cross for her outstanding volunteer service during Hurricane Harvey.

There are four levels of authority in the Red Cross’ Disaster Health Services positions — from lowest to highest: SA (Service Associate), SV (Supervisor), MN (Manager), and CH (Chief). Michelle began volunteering at the Red Cross as an SA and returned from her deployment as an SV. Englund iterates that her passion for service and leadership skills were a direct testament to the education and training she received as a Liberty University nursing student.

Jennifer Yates, BSN, graduated in May 2017 and currently works as a nurse in the CardioThoracic Intensive Care Unit at Lynchburg General Hospital.

However, Yates chose to return to Liberty part time by pursuing residential courses in American Sign Language and Interpreting (ASLI), with the goal of pursuing national certification as an interpreter and furthering her nursing career.

BSN Overview

by Tracey Turner EdS, MSN, RNC-OB The residential BSN program continues to address the national nursing shortage by training the next generation of nurses. In May 2018, 105 graduates received their BSN from Liberty University. These graduates continue the tradition of patient care excellence as they practice nursing from a biblical worldview.

Each of our 600-plus students in the BSN program are a treasure. Many students helped in the Red Cross relief to the Lynchburg, Va., area after a tornado destroyed local homes and businesses in April 2018. The BSN students led many campus and community events, such as influenza immunization clinics and blood drives. Our faculty and staff are blessed that students answer the call whenever a need arises to “bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2, ESV).

In Spring 2018, more than 20 students traveled to Kenya to complete their pediatric clinical rotation at the Jessie Kay Memorial Hospital. This trip was a special opportunity for LUSON students to use their education by healing those who are hurting while impacting several Kenyan communities with the Gospel.

Faculty Spotlight — Dr. Harvey

Psalm 19:14 guides Dr. Harvey’s interactions, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and redeemer.” Dr. Harvey’s passion for his students radiates. His three favorite things about teaching at LUSON are the freedom to share the Gospel and pray with his students, the focus of the faculty on loving the students and glorifying the Lord, and the gift of watching his students grow into compassionate nurses.

Dr. Harvey has worked in the undergraduate BSN program at LUSON since 2007. He serves as lead faculty for Medical/Surgical Nursing I, Medical/Surgical Nursing II, and Preceptorship and has a rich history in cardiac, intensive care, and nursing leadership.

Before joining LUSON, Dr. Harvey served in the United States Air Force, where he met his wife, Carol, as they both served as lieutenants. Dr. and Mrs. Harvey have

been married for 29 years and have two daughters, Elizabeth and Rachel.

For the past two summers, Dr. and Mrs. Harvey have served on mission trips with Ambassador International University (AIU) to Zambia. They’ve taught a college course for theology/pastor students, focusing on health and nutrition, to provide knowledge and tools necessary to advise people on good healthcare practices. The course not only provides beneficial health practice information, but it also teaches individuals what to do when a doctor is not present. The course includes practical information, such as how to perform CPR (with practice) and conduct basic lab tests, such as malarial testing, HIV testing, and pregnancy testing. When teaching concludes, Dr. Harvey works in the Chifundo Clinic with patients, where he and the AIU students share the Gospel with the patients.

HIS Calling – His Hands and Feet

“When He had washed their feet and put on His outer garments and resumed His place, He said to them, ‘Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.’” (John 13:12-14, ESV).

In Spring 2015, the School of Nursing was called to do just as Jesus commanded: we were called to wash the feet of others.

The LUSON Hands and Feet Clinic came into existence after our former dean, Dr. Deanna Britt, completed a site visit at a nursing school in Nebraska. She shared details about an inner-city foot clinic run by nursing students and requested that we consider a similar clinic for the greater Lynchburg area. Considering the mission of the School of Nursing — to be the hands and feet of Jesus and to serve the least of these — we were spurred to action.

The School of Nursing partnered with the local Salvation Army to bring the clinic to fruition. Our Hands and Feet Clinic is supported by sophomore and senior nursing students who provide hands and feet hygiene, supervised by faculty.

During this service learning experience, students gain a better understanding of the importance of foot care, assessment skills for various disease processes, and nursing communication skills.

The Hands and Feet clinic has served more than 500 people in the last three years and has been replicated at community-based events around the city. Additionally, the clinic received the LU Illuminate Grant and was able to provide shoes to participants in the 2016-17 academic year.

Far more than a clinical experience, the Hands and Feet clinic is a calling that we hope to answer for many years.

Psi Delta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International

The annual business meeting held on April 4 featured guest speaker Dr. Cynthia Goodrich, who spoke about her experience attending the Fall 2017 Sigma Theta Tau International Annual Conference in Indiana. She discussed recent changes in Sigma’s branding as well as a history of our own chapter.

New board members and committee leaders were also inducted, including Dr. Cindy Goodrich, president elect, Dr. Dottie Murphey, secretary, and Dr. Lynne Sanders, committee member.

The Spring 2018 semester brought growth to our chapter! On May 18, Psi Delta inducted 92 new members — we now have over 260 active members making a difference locally and nationally. If your membership has expired and you would like to rejoin, please visit the Sigma website (SigmaNursing.org).

The Simulation Center

by Kathryn Miller DNP, RN, CNE, CHSE The School of Nursing Simulation Center earned full accreditation for teaching and education by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) this spring. It is the third simulation center in Virginia to be accredited by SSH. With a documented average of 32,000 scheduled learner contact hours per year, the LUSON Simulation Center is recognized for its excellence in simulation design, implementation, and evaluation.

The goal of the LUSON Simulation Center is to provide evidence through measurable outcomes with the increased confidence, competence, and critical thinking skills associated with the nursing process and to translate student acquired knowledge to bedside wisdom, leadership, and teamwork — all this while allowing students to minister through nursing.

This is accomplished through scheduled simulation events and open lab, deliberate practice with high fidelity simulators, standardized patients, and skill trainers.

“The LUSON Simulation Center programs collaborate with other disciplines at Liberty University, including the College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM), School of Aeronautics, and Sign Language and Interpretation.

Interprofessional education with simulation enhances the educational process of all disciplines involved, as evidenced through student evaluations, increased communication, and teamwork. The simulation program supports university events and goals with participation in College For A Weekend and open house tours to promote public relations. The LUSON Simulation Center is an American Heart Association (AHA, 2017) authorized training center, offering AHA, Heartcode© BLS courses to promote safety” (LUSON Simulation Center, 2017).

The LUSON Simulation Center continues to promote simulation internationally with donated equipment and simulation training to schools of nursing in both Togo and Zambia.

MSN Overview

by Diane Bridge, EdD, MSN, RN Carrying on the tradition of Training Champions for Christ, our online graduate nursing programs continue to provide degree options for the post-licensure nurse to obtain a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree to become an expert in clinical practice, teaching, and research. The MSN program continues to offer three concentrations: Nurse Educator, Nurse Administration, and Nursing Informatics.

We also boast several dual degree options, including an MSN/MBA (Master of Business Administration) and the MSN/MS (Master of Science in Healthcare Administration).

The MSN degree at Liberty University is offered 100% online and is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing.

DNP Overview Destined to become a nurse, Dodrill started her journey as a nursing student in Liberty University’s residential program in 2006.

After graduating, she began working on the pulmonary floor at Lynchburg General Hospital. However, the Lord had given her a passion and desire to serve women in another realm — as a labor and delivery nurse. So, Dodrill changed her course path and relocated to Nashville, Tenn., to attend graduate school at Vanderbilt University.

Upon receiving certifications as both a Nurse-Midwife and a Family Nurse Practitioner, the Lord, in His sovereignty, moved her to Morgantown, W.Va. As a recent graduate living in a new state, the Lord used this time to not only grow her as a nurse but also as His follower. It was a beautiful time to see His plan — and that ultimately isn’t about nursing, but it’s about spreading the Gospel. Nursing is just a humbling avenue that the Lord allows certain individuals to travel to advance His kingdom. During this time, Dodrill

began teaching with Liberty University as an online adjunct professor in 2013.

Along with all of these opportunities to share the Gospel and deliver babies, the Lord brought along her husband, Stephen, and she took on the role of a pastor’s wife.

They now have two boys — Titus and Silas — and a third boy due in November.

She has taken time off from midwifery for this season of raising toddlers but is excited for the opportunity to return part time as soon as the Lord leads.

Dodrill considers her position at Liberty’s School of Nursing to be a great privilege. Not only does it allow her to work alongside other believers in the field of nursing, but it also gives her the opportunity to share the Gospel with students all over the world. There is nothing more encouraging than having students grow in their love for the Lord.

As Romans 11:36 states, “For from Him and to Him and for Him are all things.

To Him be the glory forever!”

by Sharon Kopis, Ed.D., MS, RN, FNP-C, CNE The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program will offer two new pathways starting Fall 2018, and one in Spring 2019. The DNP will add an online version of the current Post-BSN-DNP/FNP program for Virginia residents. In addition, the program will add two pathways for nurse practitioners to specialize in the mental health nurse field: a Post-MSN-DNP/PMHNP program and a Post Graduate PMHNP Certificate program (to be released Spring 2019). Both lead to eligibility for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification examination.

Our second class of Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs), a concentration within our DNP program, will soon graduate, and all FNP students in that class passed the FNP certification examination on the first attempt.

This is only the second class of our FNPs to take the examination, with both classes receiving a 100% first time pass rate! Our DNP Program also welcomes two new faculty: Stephanie Sherwood, DNP, MSN, RN, and Patricia Perryman, DNP, PhD, MSN, MRE, RN. Liberty Nursing Fall 2018

Summer Nursing Camp

by Tracey Milton Turner EdS, MSN, RNS-OB LUSON hosted a Nurse Camp from July 16-18 for students in grades 9-12 who were interested in exploring a degree in nursing. The camp had more than 30 male and female students from all over the United States.

Faculty from the undergraduate BSN, RN-BSN, MSN, and DNP programs came together to teach students about the art and science of nursing. Community organizations also partnered with LUSON to share their nursing experiences. While at camp, students participated in CPR certification, splinting, taking vital signs, team building, metacognition learning strategies, and evidence-based nursing practice. Campers learned about nursing within various avenues, including emergency room nursing, medical/surgical nursing, maternal/child nursing, psychiatric nursing, and research-based nursing.

Alumna Spotlight — Patricia (Pat) Perryman, DNP, RN, CNE

Pat Perryman’s decades-long healthcare career continues to thrive today. While a part-time paramedic, she earned her Associate of Science in Nursing from Midwestern State University. After graduating, Pat worked in the emergency department at Wichita General Hospital in Wichita Falls, Texas, and at St. Mary of the Plains Hospital, Texas, where she taught basic life support and advanced cardiac life support — all while completing her BSN at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing.

teaching career. Pat completed her Master of Religious Education and her PhD in Religious Education, all while serving alongside her husband in various pastoral roles.

After completing her BSN, Pat worked with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center HealthNet as a speaker and consultant, eventually serving as Senior Director of Education Services.

While working as a chief nursing officer at a local healthcare facility, she completed her MSN at Lubbock Christian University but felt led to expand her

In 2007, Pat began working as a chief quality officer for a local hospital, an adjunct in clinical teaching at a prelicense nursing school, and an evening nursing instructor. God used all of this to prepare her for the pursuit of her DNP at the Liberty University School of Nursing.

She continued to follow God’s calling to a life of service by enlisting as a major in the Texas State Guard. She was honorably discharged in 2011 as a reputed member of the Military Order of Foreign Wars and Junior Vice Commander General — the first woman to ever hold a commander position since the program’s inception.

Pat’s educational journey at Liberty provided doctoral level nursing education,

networking with a strong cohort of colleagues, inspiring faculty, and Christians with a global perspective. She is not only a dedicated student, employee, and church member but is also actively committed to several organizations, such as the Daughters of the American Revolution in the Rock Wall chapter, the Military Order of St. John, the Mayflower Society, and the Sigma Theta Tau chapters at both Lubbock and Liberty University.

She also established a nursing scholarship at Midwestern State University.

Currently Pat is a dean of nursing in an associate degree nursing program in Mesquite, Texas. After receiving her Certified Nurse Educator status in February, she began the orientation process to become an adjunct faculty member for Liberty University’s online DNP program.

Three Essential Elements of Spiritual Care

At LUSON, we teach students to view nursing as a ministry and to be “the hands and feet of Jesus.” In practice, how can a nurse provide spiritual care to patients with diverse beliefs?

The nurse is in the perfect position to provide spiritual counsel and comfort to patients when they are most vulnerable.

Throughout all phases of care, the nurse is a constant and reliable presence.

But how can we teach students to provide spiritual care? Providing spiritual care will look different for each patient and will vary for the same patient at different points of care. It is a complex process which involves God, the patient, and the nurse.

For Christian nurses, spiritual care begins with prayer to obtain God’s wisdom and guidance. It is only through submission

to Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives that we can be guided to provide spiritual care. We work in secular settings, and our patients may not even believe in God. A Christian nurse should depend on God to guide his or her care of a patient, no matter the circumstances.

We also need to engage with the patient, remembering that each is a spiritual being, made in the image of God, and worthy of respect. Truly listening to the patient, along with guidance of the Holy Spirit, will help us offer proper spiritual care, such as praying with a patient, listening to hymns, reading the Bible, or arranging for the patient’s clergy to visit. Some patients may have no interest in God or formal religion but want someone to care for them by listening and affirming their concerns. Even if we

can’t pray with a patient, we can always pray for them.

When providing spiritual care, we must also consider the nurse. The nurse is a spiritual being, made in the image of God and worthy of respect, including respect for their beliefs. They should never be put in a position that conflicts with their beliefs.

Spiritual care is a complex process, not a checklist. As nurses, we must provide spiritual care with respect for the patient’s beliefs. It’s our job to care for people in their most vulnerable moments and meeting them where they are in their own spiritual journey. It involves the Godhead, the patient, and the nurse.

Through seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can share Christ’s love with our patients in a way that will bring comfort and hope.

The Heart of a Pain Warrior

The opioid crisis is growing exponentially, garnering attention from the press and the U.S. healthcare system. Patients absorbed in this epidemic are at risk for not being consistently assessed or adequately treated for pain, a reality preceding the current crisis. This is due to a variety of reasons, including a lack of knowledge of providers and caregivers, personal biases, and myths and misconceptions about managing pain.

Unfortunately, the opioid crisis may further influence effective intervention, particularly for those in chronic pain. The tendency is to minimize or eliminate the use of opioids altogether — creating a crisis within a crisis. Health professionals, now more than ever, need to have an evidencebased foundation for understanding pain

science and use the crisis as an opportunity to explore options other than opioids to adequately address pain.

Several years ago, Liberty’s School of Nursing introduced an elective course on pain management. Since the inception of the course, many graduates have gone forward preparing to confront the challenges of those in the practice setting who have not had the benefit of studying pain science and may be skeptical to believe a patient’s report of pain. As part of the course, students develop a reflection assignment. One student captured the sense of care and responsibility felt by nurses.
