On Thursday, August 13, Mr. W etherell, N.S.W. Minister for Education, announced a new religious syllabus for primary schools: • Religious instruction was to be removed from the social studies syllabus and so be­ com e unexam inable: “ the effect o f general religious teaching as defined is seen in the p u p il’s own conduct and is not properly measurable through written examinations.”

• Religious teaching was to become synonomous with the “ teaching o f ethical prin­ ciples” . Although the Bible was to be re­ garded as a “ rich source o f teaching ma­ terial” teachers were urged to seek additional material in the writings o f other religions.

• T h e weekly Scripture lessons, given by visiting clergymen, were to be retained.

T h e weekly Scripture class is still retained and most Sunday schools have plenty o f vacancies. # It represents a CH ANGE. This is the first, last and foremost reason for protesta­ tion.

For anyone who believes that minorities should not be trampled under­ foot by arrogant propagandists of the notion that there is always only ONE RIGHT WAY, the new N.S.W, syllabus is an important issue. For those who glibly descant on the abnegation of freedom in the U.S. and South Africa from the depths of their armchairs here is an opportunity to serve the cause on the home front.

This syllabus must not be retracted.

THE CULTURAL MERRYGURUUNU Harry was a failure. H e was also anti­ social. For a while he worked in a shop but he was sacked. Finally, Harry lost inter­ est: his hair grew long; his face was unshaven. Harry was ‘‘ a nonscientific reactionary” (Messel) and a “ C om ­ munist Stooge” (W entworth). Even more, he was no longer Harry Johnson but R. Baxter H uxley (H uxley hints o f a rich genetic back­ ground), author o f the great blank verse tragedy “ T h e Return o f G od ot” which was filmed with Richard Burton reading dirty poem s at the beginning— or as Harry would say: At the genesis o f my work.

It was banned in Victoria. Trucks rolled across the border by day and night. £3 a copy.

T h e ultimate: Harry went academic. R. Baxter H uxley, Ph.D., for his book o f essays: “ M idcult and the Bom b: Does Mankind Deserve Bertrand Russell?” T h is only sold 3 copies and M um and Dad d id n ’t under­ stand anyway but the N obel Prize and a chairmanship o f an ABC Critics Show really raked it in. Gerald Lyons asked his views on censorship (“ I haven’t heard o f Mary McCarthy but N oddy is one o f the few not to have fallen into the anti-hero category”); Sidney Nolan painted the cover for his “ Ned Kelly: Artist or Saint?” ; Bill D obell, the You Beaut Country Cultural Hero, painted him in the Archibald.

Social engagements were the next step in his Writers Progress. He presented the W in ­ ning Jockey with T h e Cup; kicked off for the Grand Final; placed the sash on Miss Australia with a lovable smile on those grand Aussie features; led the Anzac Day March; spoke out fearlessly against Com ­ munism. A nd retired to the English country­ side.

W itty and impish he began to Speak After Dinner. But by the time dinner was finished Harry was stoned. Staggering to the plat­ form, Harry fum bled the topic as (gasp: Yes) “ T h e Sex Life o f the Dario C op ” . . .

T h e Police Commissioner, sipping hot milk at his Ashfield home, said he was shocked and hum iliated. T h e Festival o f Arts Com ­ mittee did n 't send him an invitation.

A fearless critic proclaimed: “ a writer who betrayed the mainstream o f life o f his virile native soil” .

It should end. But: “ H u x” , just divorced for the third time,

L ord Robert was Prime Minister o f Aus­ tralia for two years up till 1941, during which he declared war, and for fifty years after 1949, during which he did nothing.

T e ll me, Lord Menzies, why was it you did n ’ t d o anything?

I wasn't in the m ood. Besides, 1 had my reputation to think of. And, at any rate, what you say is not entirely correct. It is true that I did nothing. It is not true that I d id n ’t do anything. T o not do anything is merely wasting time. It’s negative .T o do nothing, however, is positive, and can be done deliberately. It largely depends on the way you d o it. I did nothing with style.

But surely in all that time you sometimes had access to other people’s ideas — ideas you could have put into effect and claimed as your very own?

True. But, my dear chap, why bother?

I pu t it to you. T h e Mannix-Packer axis was on my side. I was assured o f office for as long, well, for as long as my youth pills sustained me. H arold H olt continued in a state o f eternal adolescence, Bert Evatt dribbled at the mouth and Cocky Calwell talked in that voice. On top o f that my electors were getting younger and younger, and couldn't remember a time when I wasn’t there. I was the mummy in the fam ily cupboard, omnipresent and im mov­ able. A nd so gradually I began taking credit for the Labor G overnm ent’s achievements— and they weren’t so very few, you know.

At first the only way I could conceal the confusion in my own foreign policies was to blame Uncle Sam. So gradually it became convenient to d o whatever he did. That poor devil Goldwater had his little pleasures, too, while they lasted. So why shouldn’t I play along?

W hat were your relations with Queen Elizabeth II? She came on tours. I also wrote her son­ nets, but unfortunately she never under­ stood them.

After America was destroyed and you assumed the office o f Titular Head o f the United Nations, with head offices in K oo­ yong, from what source did you gain your admittedly enlightened policies?

G oin g back a bit, would you say you were elected in 1949 because you personally em bodied the Australian ideals o f non­ chalance, intemperance, and lassitude? its editorial staff and printer), Messrs. If need be, I would have spoken with the aid o f a ventriloquist. I have no pride.

Lord Menzies, I put it to you that you were the most unscrupulous, cowardly bou n ­ der ever to bloodsuck a gullible public, and you ought to be ashamed.

Ah, but you must remember there are bloodsuckers and bloodsuckers. It may well be true that my only achievements were those naturally accruing from the post-war upsurge o f prosperity. It may well be true that the country would have been better off if I ’d stayed a grocer’s assistant in Jeparit.

But I did n ’t tell many lies. I never said I ’d d o anything much, except drift along and play the schoolmasterly huckster and gerry­ mander a bit when things looked dangerous.

T h e people knew that and did n ’t care.

So why should I? the pnus was on the defencj^o^establish not only literary and 'artistic merit but also the justification o f publication.

T h e witnesses called to establish this merit, when pressed to elaborate, had been “ most unconvincing” .

He submitted that if the magistrate had any doubts in this matter at all he should find the defendants guilty.

T h e prosecutor said that the cover o f the February issue (three men standing in com ­ promising positions in front o f the P. & O. building) w ould lead most buyers to expect obscenities within the magazine.

They would not be disappointed. In fact, they would enjoy a bonus— there was not only emphasis on sexual matters but also on horror and crimes o f violence, he claimed.

T h e Court seemed well supplied with copies of the magazine, presumably from the 120 originally confiscated by the police from a King's Cross newsagent.

W itzig: W ould you explain what you mean by $aying the surfing movement is virtually asexual?

Thomas: W ithin the tradition o f a teenage cult, there has been a very blatant and very self-conscious sex-peddling.

In R ock 'n ’roll, for instance, Presley and Little Richard pushed sex in their presentation— in the body movements and so on. They were de­ liberately provocative.

T h e lyrics o f the songs emphasised sex all the time.

Surfie music is, for the most part, instru­ mental. It’s played by anolymous groups— there are no Presleys. T h e lyrics o f the songs concentrate on the sport— surf, sand, waves.

T h e actual dance is different from R ock ’n ’­ roll. T h e stomp is a mechanical thing. You dance it alone or girls dance with each other, Witzig: I’ve mixed with a lot o f different groups. Private school groups, University . . . there is more sexual activity among the surfing group than any other.

Thomas: Are you talking about Brenda-theBender type orgies: putting on a queue and thing? This is terrifically unromantic. Put­ ting on a queue so you can blow once a week— so you d on ’t have to worry about sex— so you can spend more time on the beach.

Witzig: Th at may go on but so does normal promiscuity. Surfing women are m ore sexual­ ly promiscuous. It starts younger and goes on further.

Y ou’re wrong when you say the movement is asexual.

Thomas: Still, the emphasis o f the surfie movement is not on sex as in previous fads.

Witzig: But in any sport— football, golf, cricket— is the emphasis ever on sport?

OZ: W hy is this lack o f emphasis unhealthy?

Thomas: This is not what I called un­ healthy.

T h e com plete subjection o f in­ dividuality to group values and group atti­ tudes is terribly unhealthy in a very big, young population.

Witzig: Very young people with a com mon interest are bound to develop group atti­ tudes and a group jargon. T h e whole thing you’re forgetting is that surfing is a sport.

Real surfing is something you can get ter­ ribly involved in. It is tremendously reward­ ing, physically and emotionally.

Thomas: This is something that amazes me when I talk to people like you. This fan­ tastic devotion . . .

deeply involved. Phil Edwards, a close fiiend o f mine, used to be utterly devoted to the sport. He did nothing but surf all day.

W hen he was out o f the water he wore gloves. He would not touch doorknobs or money.

He was afraid o f being contami nated by other people’s germs. T h a t’s deeply you can become involved in surfing.

If this devotion occurs naturally, how can you say it’s unhealthy?

Thomas: But some o f the people I inter­ viewed had an arrogant ignorance o f any­ thing outside surfing. “ B om ie” , for instance, lives o ff the dole, odd jobs and women. H e’s a full-time surfer. If it gets to the stage where that’s all there is in life then it’s terrifically bad.

Witzig: I think it’s bloody brilliant. You can get to the stage where you can surf all day long and you d on ’t want to talk to anyone, just go to sleep, get up next m orn­ ing and surf again. You can get sexual ful­ filment; you can get emotional fulfilment.

It’s tremendously satisfying.

Thomas: But how escapist for Chrissake.

It's 100 per cent escapist.

Witzig: You might say it’s escaping from something.

I might say it’s finding some­ thing. Especially if you can find complete satisfaction.

An individual exists only to satisfy himself.

How can you call it un­ healthy? It can be a great fulfilm ent. Take a musician who spends his life in a cave com posing music. W ou ld you can this un­ healthy?

Thomas: No. H e’s writing for other people.

tive. It is terribly insignificant in anything but a narcissistic sense. Unproductive people are unhealthy. Take someone like Salinger, he has withdrawn. But he is offering some­ thing to the world. Or even a man who goes away and invents seamless nylons.

H e’s * contributing something. Or even the beat|nik. H e’s withdrawn. He's rebellious.

But what he’s not doing has some relevance to |what he was once doing. This mute form / o f protest is in some way significant. T o spend your life riding a wave is terribly in­ significant.

Witzig: It’s wrong for you to say that one kind o f human activity is w orthwhile and another is not. You are not in a position to judge this. You say surfing is not contri­ butory. But the musician is only contribut­ ing because he has a receptive audience. A surfer who perfects a technique is contribut­ ing something to those w ho love the sport.

Thomas: I think I am entitled to make some judgm ent of human behaviour.

I think the person who goes away and makes a study o f masturbation is not doing very much.

He has the right to do it.

But I d on ’t think he is doing anything w orth­ while. 1 d o n ’t think surfing is worthwhile.

Witzig: That is because you haven’t ex­ perienced it. You haven’ t got involved enough to understand what it can mean. I maintain it can be extremely significant.

Thomas: I'm amazed.

Witzig: If I spend weeks away surfing, I do nothing but eat and sleep. I d o n ’t need to drink, smoke or have any sex.

Linguistic studies have show n that “ news” is an abbreviation fo r north, east, south and west. It is therefore suggested that it w as som ething hung up to see w hich w ay the wind blew . T h is inspiration came from an Australian copywriter from Greenlys, the agency that handles Australia.

But unfortunately he went hom e when it was still in production.

T h is left no one around who knew very much about surfboards, and the stages the ad. went through before it reached the great English pu blic were ludicrous.

First it was demanded that the man, and even the props, should be genuine.

So, from Australia came an expensive photo of a very odd model standing on a very m otion­ less surfboard in very shallow water. This was thrown out. T h en came a clever piece o f faking, which w ould have been all right except that the man in question was wear­ ing a quaint English bathing cap. T h is too was thrown out. It was at this stage that some genius suggested that a kangaroo w ould look better than a man, but repeated experiments showed that a man in a kangaroo suit could not stay upright on a surfboard, even when the tail was nailed dow n. Prime Ministers’ Conference in the hope that he might come across something useful for the forthcom ing elections, Sir Alec Douglas-Home was pleased to stumble over our Prime Minister in exile, Sir R obert of the thistle.

Not, admittedly, in person (though even that would have been n o sur­ prise; many bets were lost round Australia House when he visited hom e before the end of the Test series) but as one o f the few remaining pillars o f the Great Conservative Dream o f a Com monwealth in which W hite men lead the others towards a vague, but definitely God-Queen-and-Country-fearing, Utopia Bloody good stuff, thought Sir Alec. W e can use that.

But other T ory supporters were not so sure. Unquestionably Sir R obert had the right attitudes, but was he quite a nice person?

W ith pain and gloom they reminded Sir A lec o f Sir R ob ert’s overnight stay at Chequers, which the other P M ’s had left shortly after dinner. Was it true, some­ one asked, that the only reason Sir R obert left at all was that lackeys poured black coffee into him and gently but firmly carried him towards the door?

And then there was that embarrassing business o f Sir R obert blow ing the gaff on Southern Rhodesia. After all the trouble Sir Alec and his advisers had been to in draft­ ing a resolution that seem ed to com mit Britain to some course o f action, but in fact (by the judicious use o f phrases like "the opinion was expressed . . .” or “ some m em­ bers also felt . . .”) com mitted no one to anything at all, Sir R obert had to go and admit that it com mitted no one to anything at all. A nd this the very day that Jomo Kenyatta had publicly stated that what he had meant, and in fact what 90% o f the delegates had meant, was that Britain actu­ ally had to do something at last.

And let us not forget that nasty affair of Sir R obert leaving in the m iddle o f Jomo Kenyatta’s opening speech; and not being there at all for Albert Margai’s speech on South Africa; and then attacking Mr. Margai outside the conference, a gross and boorish breach o f courtesy. In fact, about the only good thing that happened to Sir R obert was being made an honorary member o f the Imperial Institute o f Builders, and then most people thought the adjective was in the wrong place.

It was hinted that Sir R obert had become rather a bad joke, and not at all the sort of person to be linked with during a general election. But only T im e (and of course the “ Daily T elegraph ’’) will tell whether Sir A lec decides to take a flyer on our Bob.

t)R O A D L Y speaking, m odern Japanese are o f three types.

Firstly, there are the Pro-japanese Japa­ nese, by which I mean the ultra-nationalists or, in modern parlance, ultra-rightists, w ho think, act and want everything Japanese.

T h ey hate all aliens whether they are from the East or West. I w ould call them, with all apologies to General T o jo (who, after all, wasn’t as bad as he was made ou t to be or not even bad at all), the “ T o jo T rib e ."

And, believe it or not, there are still too many o f them hiding in the most unexpect­ ed places and among the most unexpected people.

They are still writhing and w riggling under the hum iliation and defeat o f the last war which they have neither for­ gotten nor forgiven.

Secondly, there are Anti-japanese Japanese.

You may not believe this but there are quite a few w ho hate everything Japanese and would emigrate to any other country if they had the means and opportunity to do so.

Most o f them you will find am ong the younger generation, who have taken to the Way o f the West and are fast join in g the ranks o f the Beatnik.

And thirdly, there are those w ho are too confused to know where they stand o r what they believe or want.

Before the war, the Japanese, like their Chinese brothers, used to look upon all foreigners as barbarians. Despite the knowl­ edge and understanding o f the foreigner gained after the war, there are many Japan­ ese who still hold this view and sometimes do not hesitate to pronounce it in various ways.

T h ey still consider themselves superior to any other race on earth and the T o jo Spirit has never really died out. This is, I believe, mainly due to their long isolation from the rest o f the world and an uninterrupted his­ tory o f national independence until a de­ cade or two ago.

In fact, their minds are still m oulded in almost every respect by Big Brother China.

T h is is only natural. In the past everything has com e here by way o f China to which they were closely bound, being the nearest mass o f land to their country.

Th ere is hardly anything— whether in art, science or language— which can claim its origin in this country.

T h at was until the end o f the war. T h e crushing defeat turned the tables after that and now it’s America they are looking to in almost everything. This is the case o f the vanquished follow ing and imitating the vic­ tors. It is particularly true in the case of

the younger generation born after the war.

However, the greatest change has been among the young Japanese women w ho have found themselves absolutely free from the past bondage and traditions and are deter­ mined to enjoy that freedom fully. Th at is why they admire foreigners m ore than the boys and some o f them even yearn to marry them.

And were it not for the language barrier one does not know what w ould have happened.

T h e bitter lesson o f the last war had hum iliated and hum bled them and cured them o f their past arrogance, it was be­ lieved. But if people have short memories then Japanese perhaps have even shorter memories. Only one decade o f econom ic prosperity, thanks to American aid and

benevolence, com bined with the Korean war, has already turned their heads once again and the old spirit has returned even more vigorously.

T od a y ’s Japanese suffer from many com ­ plexes o f superiority as well as inferiority.

He is jealous o f the foreigner, particularly the American. He wants to vie with him in almost every field and even surpass him, if possible, though basically he has nothing with which to compete. Unfortunately, he knows this too well and hence feels extrem e­ ly frustrated. T h is has given birth to the inferiority com plex which he can’t over­ come.

On the other hand, partly perhaps as a result o f this, he wants and claims the leadership o f Asia and Africa.

T o jo tried to establish this claim by force o f arms but failed. But the claim has never been abandoned and is again being pressed forward, this time with the backing o f America and some other Western nations.

It is based on the econom ic boom at home and a trickle o f financial aid advanced to these countries, mostly as loans with interest.

Isn’t this enough to claim the right o f leadership? they ask. However, the under­ developed countries have different ideas.

T h ey ask for better qualifications for leader­ ship than financial aid.

Anyway, the Japanese have a superiority com plex toward their backward Asian and African brothers, who n o doubt are terribly hurt when they are snubbed.

However, the Japanese know their depend­ ence on the outside world and their help­ lessness. T h ey know that their prosperity is precarious. T h ey can’ t dispense with the foreigner and his trade without the entire econom y collapsing.

Thus many o f them hate the foreigner, but fear him at the same time. Even if he is an evil, it’s necessary evil they think, which they must tolerate.

Th at is the reason why there is such double talk and double dealing in almost everything.
