SABLE & MATT SHEW

Sable and Matt fell in love with surgery as medical students at Indiana University School of Medicine. They became friends and an important part of each other’s support system – through hard rotations, difficult exams, and the trials of learning to be a doctor. During the four years of intense training, the two realized their love went far beyond post-op.

just what the doctor ordered: AN URBAN, MODERN WEDDING

THE PROPOSAL Matt proposed to Sable at Iozzo’s Garden of Italy in Indianapolis in the courtyard where they had their first date two years earlier. This time, the patio was covered with snow, but that didn’t deter Matt. After the proposal, he had arranged for family members and close friends to celebrate with them at an intimate engagement dinner.

THEIR ADVICE TO brides

Spend time finding a photographer and videographer who work well together as these will be the people you spend most of your day with (aside from your spouse and bridal party) and you should be comfortable around them.

THE LOOK The couple wanted the aesthetic of the celebration to be based on “urban romance,” incorporating modernity with a timeless, romantic feel. Their planner said it was a “dream” to work with them because of Sable’s terrific style and their incredible love and support for each other and their families.

THE DRESS Sable was lucky enough to find the dress at the first place she looked. “I remember thinking, there’s no way that it’s this easy to find the perfect dress! So we put it back and continued looking, but my mind kept coming back to it.” With the accessories added, she said the Enzoani Finley was the perfect mix of “feminine and fashion forward.”

THE COLOR PALETTE Gray was the anchoring neutral tone and other colors were layered onto that. For instance, Sable’s bridesmaid found the gold dresses that brought romance and glamour to the occasion. Accent colors of blush and garnet were added to round out the palette and soften it a bit.

WHAT WE

FAVORITE MOMENT “We wrote our own vows for the ceremony and one of our favorite moments was hearing how much those vows meant to the people who had gathered to support us, as well as hearing them for the first time ourselves,” Sable said.

The “Jayhawk Down” Signature Drink to recognize their new medical residency in Kansas and personalized welcome kits presented to guests upon their arrival to the Circle City.

SPECIALISTS The two are both training at Kansas University Medical Center for the next five years. She is pursuing urology and he will be an Otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist).

THE CEREMONY Sable and Matt hoped to have a tried-and-true ceremony with some modern twists. It was based on a traditional format but featured contemporary music played on an acoustic guitar as well as the reading of poetry and Bible verses.

THE FLOWERS Sable’s bouquet popped with ivory and blush shades of pink and peach, and was filled with roses, hydrangeas, peonies, ranunculus, garden roses, freesia, hints of geranium leaf and some dusty miller. The white, low, modern ceramic vases on the reception tables were filled with roses, hydrangeas, peonies, lisianthus, a bit of lamb’s ear, seeded eucalyptus and dusty miller. The same colors used in the bride’s bouquet were utilized, adding garnet and gold votives for a sparkly, shimmery atmosphere.

ASHLEY & MARCUS JOHNS

When the bride’s business is called “Fierce Forward,” you know you’re going to get a wedding that’s like no other. In the case of Ashley and Marcus, the celebration exuded personality: a black and burnt orange color scheme as a nod to Halloween and fall; a few skulls interspersed to signify life and death, and a ceremony on the St. Joseph River at her mom and stepfather’s house.

SEPTEMBER 7, 2013 PHOTOGRAPHED BY JENNIFER VAN ELK PHOTOGRAPHY

on the edge: A FIERCE, NATURAL LOVE

THE MEET Ashley and Marcus met at The Linebacker near The University of Notre Dame and began dancing to some classic 80’s music. He immediately made her laugh because she apologized for sweating and he commented that it was nothing compared with the guy next to them. He randomly came into Bonefish Grill the next night, where she worked at the time, and they began dating.

THE PROPOSAL The two were walking around a pond in Kohler, Wisconsin in the fall (their favorite time of year). They got to the place they had started walking and she noticed that Marcus was acting nervous. He stopped and pulled out a little Frankenstein doll named Franky (from their annual Halloween party) and asked her if she would spend the rest of her life with him.

WHY THIS COUPLE WORKS Ashley describes Marcus as “a tall, handsome man who is the yin to my yang.”

WEDDING PHILOSOPHY Ashley’s business is one she built herself from the ground up. She calls it “Fierce Forward” because it is a movement empowering women to move fiercely towards the life they want to live, to create their purpose and to be a good person. Check it out at www.fierceforwardforlife.com or fierceforwardnation on facebook. You’ll find inspiration, clothing, jewelry, a book club, and lots of support. The tenets of her business also held true for her wedding. “My personal mission was to not worry about what others thought and to follow my heart for the day I would commit to my soul mate.”

JENNIFER VAN ELK PHOTOGRAPHY

34

WEDDING DAY

ADVICE FROM THE bride “You don’t have to go broke for one of the most memorable days of your life. It is one day and putting your own touch to it is important. And have fun! The day of the wedding, I gave myself permission to let go.”

FAVORITE DÉCOR DETAILS “The décor was special because my family had a hand in it,” Ashley said. She and her father made a bar together, her mom helped with the centerpiece boxes and her brother created a “Fierce Love” sign made from pennies. Words and intentions mean a lot to her and important ones were strewn throughout the celebration.

THE DRESS This very self-assured bride made a trip to Chicago to look at dresses, but when she had an allergy attack that day, decided to look closer to home. She went to her favorite antique store and found the perfect dress in a newly created vintage bridal section.

MELISSA JORDAN PHOTOGRAPHY 40 WEDDING DAY

The vibrant, colorful, provocative

Mexican artist Frida Kahlo served as the inspiration for our luscious photo shoot. Photographer Melissa Jordan said the Mexican surrealist artist intrigued her and when she shared her vision with Grace from Whalen Creative Group, the response was enthusiastic. “When it came to designing a wedding inspired by Frida Kahlo and her art, I wanted to make sure I captured both her bold colors as well as the natural and earthy elements of her paintings,” Grace said. “I knew I wanted it to be bold and colorful, but not over the top.”

A BRIGHT MODERN FIESTA: A PHOTO SHOOT CHANNELING AN ICONIC ARTIST PHOTOS BY MELISSA JORDAN PHOTOGRAPHY //

A l i t t le a b o u t F r ida Kahlo, considered one of Mexico’s greatest artists, is best known for her self portraits displaying strong, brutally honest and colorful images. She died at the age of 47 in 1954 after suffering from injuries sustained in a bus-trolley accident when she was only 19. She was married to the legendary Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera. She also was a fashion icon, causing a sensation wherever she traveled. Beyoncé dressed up as Frida the past two Halloweens, reflecting her impact on today’s culture.

WEDDING DAY

41

The V enue Willow Harbor Vineyards became the backdrop for the shoot. The vibrant and abundant green grapes and grapevines reflect the passion and sensuousness of Kahlo and this particular wedding vision.

The DĂŠcor Det ai l s Accents were designed to bring out the pops of color that emerge in the florals. Subtle and natural linen colors were complemented with wood accents in the chargers and vases. Colorfully dipped mini-churros were the favors; Mexican sodas, tequila shots and a cigar were offered to guests. A painted canvas was the guestbook.

The B ri dal B ouq ue t A mixture of brightly-colored traditional flowers comprised the bride’s bouquet to keep a simple, bright color the main focus, with just a few special blooms added to make it stand out even more.

The Gow n The Lazarro 3308 gown was the perfect fit for this shoot with a sheer lace bodice and a flamenco-style bottom layered with ruffle after ruffle, not unlike an exquisite dancer.

Th e Je w e lr y Team members chose a coral jade necklace with sterling silver ornate bead accents; a coral jade bead bracelet with white druzy quartz; a Turquoise bead bracelet; a sand-colored druzy gold vermeil pendant on a sterling black oxidized chain and sterling sand druzy pear shaped drop earrings. The jewelers’ private collection provided a 14 carat white gold diamond engagement ring (two carats) for the shoot.

WEDDING DAY

43

The Styl e Our model mirrored Frida Kahlo’s incredible style with a beautifully bold but clean look. We couldn’t resist the crimson lips and Frida’s trademark brow. The hair was swept into a simple side ponytail and flowers were woven into her braid. Other flowers were tucked behind the ear for color and style.

The Groom and T ux A sophisticated charcoal tuxedo – very structured and very classy – worked perfectly with the bride’s ruffles. A single succulent became the groom’s boutonniere.

Wedding Décor:

The Hottest Rental Trends If you’ve been to a wedding in the last couple of years, you know that the décor can rival a Broadway musical: lighting resembling a winter wonderland or a reception that revolves around a turn-of-the-century carousel. But there are plenty of brides more comfortable in a barn wearing cowboy boots and sitting on vintage chairs. Today, about anything is possible, so the entire process can be a little overwhelming. We talked with some of our expert vendors to look at the latest in décor trends so you can plan a wedding that reflects your personality and stays within the budget.

Farm to Table The rustic barn wedding that has been so popular the past several years is not going away, despite predictions that it would run its course. Mason jars and burlap might be waning, but the trend itself is more popular than ever. In 2015, it is morphing into the “farmto- table” movement, emphasizing locally sourced food and a more comfy, relaxed atmosphere. The farm-to-table movement is the hottest trend going in restaurants so it only makes sense that it has permeated the wedding industry. “The trend is not dying down,” according to Molly Davidson, special events specialist at Burns Rent-Alls of Mishawaka. “The brides want a more casual feel. They want a party rather than an extravaganza.” The green movement is going gangbusters, too, and Davidson said that renting décor items is actually a way of honoring the environment. “Why buy 20 centerpieces and then never use them again? It doesn’t make sense.” Repurposed whiskey barrels are being used as tables and bars.

“They want a party rather than an extravaganza.” Molly Davidson, Burns Rent-Alls of Mishawaka

Farm tables have become chic, whether they are used for reception tables, the dessert table, or for the actual bar. Davidson said their versatility is appealing because they can be used in more formal settings, such as a country club, or the laid back appeal of the backyard. Mike Wiggins, from A Classic Party Rental in Indianapolis, said the farm-to-table movement is manifesting itself in varnished wood chairs, mahogany Chiavari chairs and farm tables. He said the four by eight-foot tables are being mixed with round tables to add some contrast in terms of centerpieces.

All That Glitters Mirrors, mirrors everywhere is a trend that wedding expert Colin Cowie has called hot this year. Lucite is also a material that adds shine and sophistication.

SARA ACKERMANN PHOTOGRAPHY

“The use of reflective surfaces has not hit our area too much,” Wiggins said. “But we have done weddings with mirrors over the tops of the tables that broadcast the light throughout the space with the use of candles and specialty lighting.” Cheryl Brockman of A Party Apart in Fort Wayne said they have done several weddings using silver and gold mercury glass. Using a mixture of various elements and other types of glass is also popular. While some brides have ended up with hanging mirror curtains (replacing the former sparkle of mirror balls), she said brides didn’t come in looking for a “reflective look.”

Move to the Head of the Table Laura Magliozzi of MichaelAngelos The Event Company, South Bend, said the head table is getting an overhaul from a multitude of different setups and arrangements to the floral details. She said more floral and lighting is finding its way to the all-important head table along with specialty linens and upgraded seating arrangements. Nate Hochstetler, owner of Grand Rental Station in Middlebury, said LED lighting combined with different linen colors and textures adds a completely customized experience that wasn’t available just a few years ago. In fact, sites like Pinterest help them understand the bride’s vision. But, he said, scale needs to be considered. Ideas conveyed on Pinterest may look great and are easy to recreate for a party of 50 guests. That same look “is quite often more challenging for a wedding with 350 guests.”

Lounge Lizards and Photo Booths Magliozzi said that lounge furniture is being moved from the perimeter of the event into the very epicenter of the party, making it possible for more mingling among guests. Photo booths are changing too. Not only has the technology improved, but new backdrop designs allow the guests to remember the look and feel of the day, Magliozzi added.

Linen Lux If you’ve ever experimented with a tablecloth prior to a party, you understand how difficult it is to have it look just right. Linens are an underrated art form best handled by professionals. And, the look of linens changes and improves all the time.

JENNIFER MAYO STUDIOS

Wiggins said linens are always evolving at A Classic Party Rental. “We research the colors that are hot for the season and buy in these colors in several textures to give our clients a range of choices.” He said brides are not always looking for solid, poly blends but want textures in pintuck, crush or satin to modernize and change up the look of the event. “Brides need help with linens,” said Davidson at Burns. “They’re key to the look but most people don’t understand the art of layering, using different colors, folding, etc.” While most people think of white linens at weddings, she said colors don’t cost more and give weddings more of a “pop.” “Napkin folding is an art and takes time and we know how to do it efficiently,” Davidson said. “No bride wants to do that on her wedding day.”

THE HAIR The stylist wanted to create a dramatic but sophisticated look. She made that happen by draping the hair to one side and curling the model’s tresses in the same direction. The look was enhanced with just the right earrings and hair comb.

THE MAKEUP Enhancing the model’s natural beauty was key to the makeup. Our makeup artist used soft contouring to enrich her natural bone structure. Satin shades of taupe and earth tones resulted in a soft, iridescent glow. Foundation was airbrushed to ensure an even, medium coverage finish that would last for hours. The look was completed with a rose-toned blush.

THE GOWN This lovely fit and flare gown, designed by Casablanca Bridal (#2141), features a satin skirt, a sheer illusion neckline with pearls and Swarovski crystals and rhinestones. We’re still swooning over the beaded embellishment on the train.

INDIANA MEMORIAL UNION COVER SHOOT The visionaries for this fabulous cover shoot at the Indiana Memorial Union captured that one glorious moment in time that a bride and groom will recall forever. It doesn’t matter the season or the latest trend; all that matters is that one eternal moment.

KLM Photography

WEDDING DAY

69

THE VENUE While the union is a beloved and well-known spot on the Indiana University campus, for the purposes of the shoot, this wedding is shot from unusual vantage points that extol the possibilities of the renovated space and the timeless architecture. Think you know every inch of it? Think again. This is not your mother’s student union.

THE FLORAL PALETTE Shades of green and ivory with accents of gold were the inspiration for the plentiful flowers used throughout the various locations. The ceremony spot worked with natural elements such as moss, curly willow and succulents.

THE BOUQUET We tried to keep this one “elemental” using a square bouquet holder, air plants, particularly tillandsia, green tick dianthus, orchids, mini callas, succulents and Kermit mums.

THE GROOM A rugged groom wearing a classic black tux – it’s a combo we couldn’t resist.

THE TABLETOP Fresh from a European floral symposium, our team was eager to incorporate an architectural component to the table setting to add both detail and height. Using sleek designs with clean and modern patterns and colors, the result was dramatic!

THE CEREMONY The ceremony took place on the garden terrace amid old stones and statuary. The gold chiavari chairs are capped with rustic linen chair backs and placed beside a moss runner and moss balls. A giant silk organza flower wraps around the chair back to add charm and sophistication to the garden setting.
