WEDDINGDAY 3

FROM THE EDITOR There is a special place in my heart for brides and grooms planning a wedding from a distance. My husband and I were living in Naples, Florida at the time we became engaged. It was the early ‘80’s – no Internet, no websites – only telephones to dial the day away. National magazines were there, but provided no local resource information. The only real true local resource was word of mouth from vendors and brides that have gone before you! Given the size of our families, we chose to get married in South Bend. There we were, 1,100 miles away. My lifeline was my mother, who like most mothers, had no wedding planning experience. She spent her day dialing the phone and talking with vendor after vendor. Now that I really think about it, I regret that I may never have thanked her for all her hard work – don’t make that same mistake! The Internet has turned the bridal industry upside down and inside out in the way couples plan today. Although testimonials and referrals still remain incredibly important, there are other important factors that millennials rely on before even contacting a vendor today. Trust in the source of information is incredibly important, as is the ability to personalize whatever it is they are purchasing, and adding originality is key!

FOLLOW US FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT:

What we’ve learned over the last five or so years is that this trend of distance planning continues to grow, and thanks to the Internet, we’ve discovered that we are the #1 source for wedding planning in the Midwest! We are now able to report on facts like website traffic source, social media followers and how our audience engages with us to substantiate that claim! We can inspire with beautiful photography and capture attention with features and relevant articles. And we can assist vendors in getting in front our very large audience of couples and wedding industry professionals throughout the Midwest region. And yes, a tangible magazine is still there for those who still want the touch and feel experience, and of course, phones are still with us for the personal voice communication experience. It is a whole new era in wedding planning. No matter where you reside or the destination in the Midwest that you choose, WeddingDay – your trusted and reliable brand – is here to assist! Happy Planning,

Earthy + Luxe FALL ELOPEMENT INSPIRATION

EMILY HARY PHOTOGRAPHY

12

WEDDINGDAY

E

mily Hary of Emily Hary Photography found herself inspired by her love of fall and creeks. “I planned and styled this elopement inspiration myself,” she says. “I wanted to create something totally unique. The idea that spawned this whole shoot was putting the table into a body of water—something I had never seen done until now.” The woodsy, outdoor space not only mirrored the type of venue Emily loves working in—the great outdoors—it provided the perfect, autumnal toned backdrop for all the natural elements used, including fur, brass, geodes and crystals. “Geometric details such as the hexagonal, marble coasters and gemstone place card holders added a modern edge,” says Emily. “I have always loved rocks and when natural elements are used for wedding décor because they are perfect for an understated elegance that allows the beauty of nature to speak for itself.” Emily carried the effortless, fall-inspired theme into the bridal look and florals as well. The flowy, vintageinspired gown was beautifully paired with a moody, wine-colored makeup palette, and the bride’s hair was accented with a raw crystal comb. Partnering with Leah Bayes of LB Floristry, florals in moody, fall tones such as crisp white, burgundy, and greenery were perfectly infused. Leah designed the stunning asymmetrical bouquet while perfecting the cake with pops of greenery and florals. The cake itself featured a modern, two-tier design finished with a salted caramel drip and sea salt flakes. Donuts, salted caramel and dark chocolate tarts and macarons completed the spread. Vintage rentals and a beautiful invitation suite rounded out the details. PHOTOGRAPHY: EMILY HARY PHOTOGRAPHY (EMILYHARY. FEATURED WEDDING

KATIE & NICHOLAS GALVIN

Katie met Nick on Match.com© within a few weeks of joining. He not only became her first date but certainly made her feel happy she had joined! When the time came to propose to Katie, Nick knew she wanted her friends and family around. After disguising the event as a birthday celebration for her mom, he surprised her with a romantic scene in her family’s horse barn, complete with candles, hanging wreaths, champagne and even a hidden photographer to capture the moment. Katie says, “Nick planned this special, private moment to be shared with only him, myself and our onlooking horses. He then took me up to my parents’ house where all of my closest friends and family were patiently hiding and waiting for us to walk through the door to surprise me again! I couldn’t have asked for a more thoughtful, romantic and amazing proposal.

THE VENUE The Joseph Decuis Wagyu Farm was the ideal choice for the outdoor wedding the couple dreamed of. “We chose the Joseph Decuis Farm as our venue because it was the perfect atmosphere we had envisioned and very close to my parents' house,” says Katie. “From the hops garden dance floor, beautiful horse barns and fresh vegetable gardens to a gazebo overlooking a pond, it was perfect."

THE DRESS With her mom and bridesmaids by her side, Katie discovered her lovely Eddy K. “Lucia” gown at Marie Gabriel Couture Bridal in Indianapolis. "I was looking for a long sleeved, lace dress and ended up getting a sequined, sleeveless dress! It was the third dress I tried on, and we cancelled our second appointment and called it a win!”

THE COLORS Katie says, “My color scheme was realized when I finally decided on my bridesmaids' dresses. The color was called ‘Morning Mist,’ a light sage green that I thought would look clean and crisp and go with most fall accent colors.” Inspired by a whimsical feel, lots of greenery, cream and white flowers and pops of plum, Katie envisioned the perfect fall palette.

WHIMSY AND GRACE // Featured Wedding

THE FLORALS The gorgeous florals, designed by Be Married, included bouquets composed of roses, dahlias, Scabiosa, snowberries, Lisianthus and seeded eucalyptus, while centerpieces featured Agonis, Protea, blackberries, hydrangeas, garden roses and Scabiosa.

ADVICE FROM THE bride

Katie says, “I would never have been able to plan the wedding of my dreams without the help of my mom, so make sure you have someone close to help you stay organized and on track, whether it be your wedding planner or close family member or friend.”

WEDDINGDAY 23

SPECIAL TOUCHES This couple loved that they were able to incorporate Katie’s cousin’s band into their wedding ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. “It was awesome that we were able to use them because they are amazing, and my cousin is family!” says Katie. “We also asked a different cousin’s husband to be our pastor for the ceremony and marry us, which was very special and personal.” The piece of reclaimed wood they used for their unity ceremony was also a meaningful part of their day and now hangs in their living room.

springtime love

A ROMANTIC WEDDING AT SOUTH BEND CENTURY CENTER

After meeting at a local South Bend bar, Terri and Steven were immediately drawn to one another. After only a couple of weeks of dating, Steven headed back to Florida to finish his degree in physical therapy, while Terri remained in South Bend to finish nursing school before returning home to Chicago. “I didn’t know where this relationship was going or if it was going to last outside of Indiana,” says Terri. “A few days before he left, I asked Steven if we could go to The Grotto at Notre Dame to light a candle. Lighting a candle in the Catholic faith is like giving a prayer and hoping it lasts forever.” The couple’s prayers held strong. Only two years later, the couple found themselves at The Grotto again except this time, Steven was down on one knee. “It was the perfect place to officially start forever,” says Terri.

THE VISION While much of Terri’s inspiration came from online resources and magazines, she was also inspired by the beautiful campus of her alma mater—the location of her ceremony—and all the good memories she had there. “I wanted a spring wedding with light colors and beautiful florals,” she says. “We are also from different cultures and I wanted to honor both sides by showcasing them. I dreamt of having a classic wedding ceremony and a party reception that would have people dancing throughout the night.” 32

WEDDINGDAY

THE VENUE

THE DRESS

Terri envisioned a classic wedding that spoke innocence and romance. She found the perfect backdrop with the Century Center in South Bend. Terri says, “I thought that their ballrooms were perfect canvases for me and for Laura (of MichaelAngelos Events) to create the perfect reception venue. The coordinator, Kimberly, was so kind and helpful during the process. It made planning a breeze. Inspired by the colors of blush and champagne, the venue’s décor featured white frilled tulips, white and blush sweet peas, Gem Spray Roses, Sahara Roses, peonies, clematis, willow and jasmine, giving Terri and Steven the classically romantic wedding of their dreams. “It was simply amazing, and I was so grateful I chose the vendors because they worked well together,” says Terri.

Terri had dreamt about her wedding since she was five, so finding the perfect gown for the big day that had finally arrived was important. Spying her dream gown online, she was happy to learn that the only bridal salon in the Midwest that carried the Galia Lahav “Loretta” gown was in Chicago. “I made an appointment as soon as I could,” Terri recalls. “My mom and I were met with excellent service with women who knew the bridal industry and never once made me feel pressured. I told my bridal consultant about the Galia Lahav dress and how I found it on Pinterest. When she brought it out, I knew it was the one.”

WHAT WE

love

Terri says, “I saw your magazine in Bethza’s studio during my trial hair and makeup! I followed you on Facebook and Instagram and loved everything you posted about weddings!”

et against charming architecture and beauty only Mother Nature could offer, this romantic shoot began as a vision for an enchanting, springtime concept. Inspired by slate blue paired with the warmth of rosy champagne, Alyssa of Fleurology Designs imagined a palette of lavenders, periwinkles, French blue and gray tones. Photographer Samantha James and Alyssa’s collaboration resulted in an intoxicating vision complete with a koi pond, gorgeous willow tree and gardens in bloom. “I wanted to create this romantic, European look and feel that was simple and organic yet complex and beautiful,” says Alyssa. Infusing florals grown in Michigan and California, just some of the gorgeous varieties Alyssa selected included hellebores, lilacs, Nigella pods and blooms, dusty miller, peony tulips and Agapanthus. 38

FEATURED WEDDING

THERESA & MIKE ARNOLD

Ingeniously disguising his proposal plan as the result of winning a work competition, Mike whisked Theresa away on a lovely September weekend trip to New Buffalo, Michigan, complete with a wine tour. “We drove up and hopped on the wine tour, and after a few stressful hours for me and a couple of glasses of wine for her, we ended at Round Barn,” says Mike. “I led her out between the vines and got down on one knee! It was such a great weekend in New Buffalo that we decided to come back a year later to tie the knot!”

in love

A LUSH, OUTDOOR SOIRÉE AT FERNWOOD BOTANICAL GARDEN

For the couple, the planning process started immediately. “Before we even left New Buffalo that weekend, we stopped at a couple places to scope out a venue,” says Theresa. “I spent hours searching Instagram for vendors in the Indiana and Michigan area through hashtags and location tags. I’ve never Instagram stalked so much in my life, but it worked, and I found almost all of my vendors through social media.”

THE DRESS

In terms of aesthetics, the pair wanted something classic and semi-traditional but not formal or stuffy. “We wanted a few unique details that would set our day apart,” says Theresa. “We chose copper and gray velvet accents, green and white floral arrangements and all white bridesmaid dresses. Mike even wore a green suit! We loved our cake table full of eight different cakes and black and white dance floor!”

Theresa knew that finding the dress would be one of the most challenging parts for her. “My grandma is a designer and I grew up sewing with her, so finding the right dress was daunting,” says Theresa. “After several stops at various Chicago bridal boutiques with no luck, we made our way to Mira Couture for the Atelier Pronovias trunk show.” When her bridal consultant added her favorite dress, the "Estela," to her batch to try on, the vision for her wedding suddenly became clear. “It was the first dress I had put on that I could see myself walking down the aisle in,” Theresa says.

FRESHLY IN LOVE // Featured Wedding

THE VENUE “We searched high and low for our venue, and after really honing in on having an outdoor wedding, we found Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve in Niles, Michigan. The gardens at Fernwood are beautiful no matter the season. Even though it was December, the grounds still got our imagination going. It was within 30 minutes of New Buffalo where our guests were staying and our other wedding activities were being held, so it allowed us to have both a summer beach theme and a lush garden backdrop all in one. We incorporated the many areas of the venue, with supplying our guests with a map of the garden and candy stations at certain landmarks, encouraging our guests to explore and use different areas for the ceremony and cocktail hour.”

THE DÉCOR Theresa was thrilled when a picture of an al fresco, open air, draped tent wedding she had seen years before on Pinterest suddenly became a reality for her. And the finishing touches? Slate gray, copper accents and acrylic signs. Theresa says, “We brought a huge trailer up from Chicago filled with décor (and alcohol!). My mom spray painted tea light holders in copper and we used big, white drum lights from Ikea to hang along the frame of tent. We brought all the cake stands, slates for charcuterie boards, pillows, linens, acrylic and wood table numbers—even the gray velvet W H A T W E love loveseat we sat in! My whole family pitched in to make the wedding Theresa says of WeddingDay, what it was.” “It was a great source for local

vendors that we otherwise would have had trouble finding. Every time we went up to Michigan, we grabbed a copy and still have them in our wedding folders!”

WEDDINGDAY 47

SPECIAL TOUCHES FEATURED WEDDING

Because the couple and their families ended up doing a lot of the work themselves, Theresa and Mike were thankful for everything that was done to make their weekend so special. Their wedding date of September 9th also marked Theresa’s grandfather’s 95th birthday, so they brought in a special cake for him to help celebrate. Other memorable details included a string quartet for the ceremony and Theresa’s mother, a professionally trained singer, performing the “Song of Ruth.”

ADVICE FROM THE bride

“As most wedding sites will tell you, figure out what is important to you and your fiancé and prioritize and plan around that,” Theresa says. “That can be very difficult since the pieces are mostly planned separately, but there were a few things that we really loved and wanted. Also, figure out how much work you want to do for your big day. We saved a lot of money doing so many D.I.Y. projects, but we were exhausted!”

Leave Your Inhibitions at the Door AN INTERVIEW WITH LESS IS MORE BOUDOIR

B

oudoir photography can mean more to a bride than simply gifting sexy photos to her groom or groom-to-be (which, by the way, we can assure you he will appreciate!). It can be a chance to celebrate and embrace self-love and acceptance. It can mean capturing certain health and fitness results you might be very proud of achieving. It can be a fun, self-esteem boosting opportunity to highlight your personal beauty or certain assets that are all a part of making you, you!

Livia Villanueva, the photographer behind Less is More Boudoir, prides herself on not only capturing, but discovering exactly how a bride-to-be wants to be portrayed. The result is an artful celebration of that woman as well as the special place in life she’s in. We decided to pose some questions to Livia to reveal more about the process behind her magic, and to do the ever-important job of highlighting the things that make this genre of photography so great—especially for brides!

THE POINT OF THE SHOOT ISN’T TO MAKE IT COOKIE-CUTTER, BUT TO MAKE IT CUSTOMIZED TO EACH PERSON.” - LIVIA VILLANUEVA, OWNER OF LESS IS MORE BOUDOIR

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER // Livia Villanueva, Less is More Boudoir

54

WEDDINGDAY

Livia Villanueva of Less is More Boudoir was born in New York City to Dominican parents. Eventually, she ended up living in the Dominican Republic with her grandparents and moving back and forth between both households. She clearly remembers her first camera, a Kodak 110, and capturing pictures of her Barbies. After moving to the Dominican Republic to attend a university, she transferred to USF in St. Petersburg, Florida where she finished her degree. Calling Dallas, Texas home for a couple years, she now lives in Bloomington, Indiana where she has resided for 20 years. As a mom of two wonderful children, she has enjoyed capturing all of their special moments growing up and credits the motivation behind her photography to them.

CAN YOU FILL US IN ON WHY YOU GOT INTO BOUDOIR PHOTOGRAPHY AND WHAT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK?

WE UNDERSTAND THERE ARE MANY BENEFITS TO A BOUDOIR SESSION. CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT THESE ARE?

HOW DO YOU HELP A WOMAN TO FEEL AT EASE? WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL APPROACH DURING YOUR SESSIONS?

I know this will sound a little odd, but I feel that photography came to me. In my early years, I grew up in the Dominican Republic with my grandparents. There wasn’t much in the way of TV back then, so I spent a great deal of time drawing. My grandfather had a pretty decent Playboy collection, and considering that where I grew up nudity wasn't a taboo, I just picked up a magazine and started drawing. I remember focusing on things like the proportions, the curves, the collar bones...completely oblivious to the fact that my subject was nude. Then years later, I was living with my mom and step-dad in upstate New York, home of Kodak, where he was studying photography. I eventually became his little assistant. I'd be in the dark room helping him develop film by agitating the tanks, sifting the papers in the developing trays or even being his portrait model for his new lenses and such. Fast forward many years later to when a great (photography) mentor of mine put a camera in my hands, and it was kismet. I was skeptical that it would amount to anything, but honestly, the very first images were really pretty good. Every once in a while, I go back to that catalogue of photos and I'm like, 'That was beginner’s luck.' Since then, I've been fortunate to have access to an immense source of information about photography, as well as attend many workshops and conferences such as WPPI. All of these opportunities have paved the way for me to do what I love—which is to photograph people. I’m just more inclined to photograph women because I feel in every one of us there is a Venus Anadyomene or Marilyn Monroe, and I can draw her out.

There are so many benefits to a boudoir shoot. I mean, the women come away with such a great experience that many are repeat customers. The shoot is meant to pamper them like a celebrity. They have their own personal makeup artist and hair stylist. There are snacks and music. Everything is catered to them. There’s tons of laughter, too, so the shoots are intended to make them feel beautiful and appreciate themselves more, so they walk away feeling sexier and more empowered than ever. They are more confident in their own skin, and that’s what matters.

This is why I put so much time into meeting and talking to my clients beforehand—to get a good sense of who they are, what they’d like to do and not do, what they’re self-conscious about. I need to know them well enough to know how to direct them, too. You can’t treat all your clients the same. You have to handle with care. But once I get to know them and they are comfortable with me, then it’s smooth sailing from there. We laugh, we dance a little and sometimes even tell dirty jokes during the shoot to get some amazing laughs and smiles on camera.

Q

A

Q

WHAT ARE SOME KEY DIFFERENTIATORS YOU BRING TO THE TABLE AS A PHOTOGRAPHER THAT SPECIALIZES IN BOUDOIR PHOTOGRAPHY? I feel that what sets me apart is my willingness to spend time with my clients before I even pick up the camera. I need to get to know them so I can understand what they are looking for in a boudoir photoshoot. I usually have a few telephone calls and many texts, for starters, to get acquainted and find out a little about them—as well as give them the opportunity to get to know me. I also encourage a meeting in a coffee shop or in a little cafe. Face-to-face is crucial. After all, my clients need to be comfortable with being scantily-clad around me, so I need to establish trust and confidence in the relationship.

A

Q

A

Q

A

WHERE DO YOU FEEL THE HESITATION IN BOOKING A BOUDOIR SESSION COMES FROM WITH WOMEN? CAN YOU DISPEL SOME OF THE STEREOTYPES SURROUNDING THIS?

Q

There are so many, but the main ones I continually run into are: weight, no special someone, not sexy enough, can’t pose and finances. I can dispel them all and more. But let’s start with the weight issue. Please ladies, please just stop obsessing over your weight and look at what God made! Our bodies are always changing, and we have to accept and adapt to those changes, and the best way is to embrace your curves, the dimples and the folds of skin. Love yourself as you are now. You’d be surprised to know that my most confident clients were actually a little curvier, and they love their bodies and flaunted it. No one special...WHAT??? YOU are special, gift yourself an album of beautiful, intimate portraits that you can look back on one day and say, ‘I LOOKED AMAZING!’ If you take the time to get your hair done, nails, buy pretty clothes, etc., why not go a little further to treat yourself to a boudoir shoot? It can commemorate a special time in your life, too. Besides, selfies on your phone can’t capture what I can! As far as the ‘I’m not sexy enough’ or ‘I can’t pose,’ that’s what I’m there for—to bring out your inner goddess and help you channel her throughout the session as well as once you leave the studio. You will walk taller and strut your stuff so much better when I’m done with you...LOL. Now the money thing. Yes, it’s expensive. No, I’m not cheap, but do you want quality photos that will last a lifetime? My images are classy, timeless and tasteful, and I put in a lot of work to give my clients exactly what they want. I work out payment plans, and I can find a boudoir package that fits your budget...why buy a beater car when you can walk away with a Rolls, baby?!

A

WHEN IT COMES TO WHAT TO WEAR, WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS BESIDES LINGERIE OR SEXY ATTIRE?

Q

A

Well, it’s all a matter of what you want to flaunt, and I can help you hone in on that feature. If cleavage is what you want to draw attention to, then a balconette bra with padding is great. If your booty game is on point, then a cheeky panty accentuates that feature. If it's sexy, long or muscular legs, then perhaps a sheer stocking and garter (and nothing else, winky face). But I will be there every step of the way to gently guide you. If you don’t even want to wear lingerie, well there’s always an oversized sweater or the classic white sheets theme, too. There’s a look for everyone, and I can accommodate them. The point of the shoot isn’t to make it cookie-cutter, but to make it customized to each person.

IF YOU COULD TELL A BRIDE CONSIDERING A BOUDOIR SESSION ONE THING, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?

Q

A

Just imagine the look on his face!

Navigating the World of Bridal Salons YOUR GO-TO GUIDE FOR FINDING THE ONE

T

he pressure is on. Whether your wedding dress is something you’ve dreamt of as a little girl watching Disney princesses dance across the TV screen or something you’ve hardly given a thought to until the day your wedding dress shopping adventures begin, we

know how stressful making such an important decision (and purchase!) can be. From sifting through the never-ending supply of inspiration to choosing the perfect designer, fit and color, the challenge of finding the dress of your dreams can seem insurmountable.

To ensure you don’t end up being that brideto-be in tears (unless they are happy ones, of course!), we’ve decided to arm you with some Bridal Salon Prep 101. The more informed and prepared you are, after all, the happier and smoother finding the one may be!

What to know before you go D I S C O V E R W H AT I N S P I R E S Y O U

Start a Pinterest board, comb through magazines or social media and grab your girl squad and watch Say Yes to the Dress! Basically, do whatever it takes to bring what really inspires you to the surface. Researching different styles or designers only helps you to discover—or confirm—what really moves you and what you can envision yourself in. Try to imagine the dress that will really make you glow on your wedding day.

D O YO U R B R I DA L S A LO N R E S E A RC H

Websites and social media are both great tools for really delving into a bridal salon and what products and service they have to offer. Use them to your advantage! Are you in love with a certain designer but aren’t sure if and where you can find them? Research a bridal salon’s product line or upcoming trunk shows. Not sure if a boutique is worth checking out? Look at online reviews and testimonials to see what others are saying.

C O N S I D E R Y O U R T H E M E A N D W E D D I N G D E TA I L S A wedding really is a sum of all its parts, and to ensure your bridal look is just as cohesive, imagine how much more elevated your style will be if you can also incorporate a bit of your theme and overall feel. For example, wearing lace if your wedding has some vintage flare or a flowy, whimsical gown for a boho themed wedding.

DON’T FORGET THE SEASON

Part of finding the perfect dress is ensuring it also aligns with the season. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear a strapless gown in winter (fur shawls are lovely after all!), but maybe consider other styles and silhouettes that could really bring your look to life. You will tie in with the overall season and what makes it so alluring.

What to do when you arrive BE OPEN MINDED

One of the most important keys to success when you finally do embark on your shopping experience is being open to trying a style or silhouette you didn’t originally consider. There are literally thousands of designs out there. You never know what you might fall in love with until you actually see it on. Believe us. We hear so often from brides how their final pick was completely unexpected!

TIP FROM THE

expert

“COLOR AND TEXTURE ARE ALSO TWO THINGS TO STAY OPENMINDED ABOUT. IMAGINE A COLOR PALETTE FULL OF IVORIES, AND YOU ARRIVE IN A PEACOCK BLUE SHOE.”

VO C A L I ZE YO U R V I S I O N

Bridal consultants are called that for a reason. They are there to help you every step of the way (if they are doing their job well)! Don’t be afraid to communicate clearly what you do or do not like about a certain design because this information will help lead you both down a path of discovering the dress that was meant for you!

C O N S I D E R W H AT Y O U DESIRE FIRST

DON’T FORGET THE ACCESSORIES

Whether it’s a breathtaking veil, a sparkly belt, beaded sash or a unique hair piece, sometimes we just need to see that final bit of detail for the vision to really come to life. Don’t be afraid to take that step before you make a decision.

TIP FROM THE

expert

“WHEN YOU ARRIVE TO A BRIDAL SALON OR BOUTIQUE, REMEMBER TO BRING THE HEEL HEIGHT THAT YOU FEEL YOU WANT TO APPEAR IN. ALSO, COME PREPARED WITH THE PROPER UNDERGARMENTS FOR SMOOTHNESS AND SUPPORT.”

THE BEST DRESS

for your body shape

As women, we come in many shapes and sizes. We aren’t only unique in our body type, but our stature, height and tastes as well. It’s a truly beautiful thing that no two brides look alike! There will and forever be only one of us! The good news is, there’s a lot out there to choose from. Amongst bridal salons, boutiques, fashion retailers and independent designers, thousands upon thousands of dresses and designers are waiting for you! While finding “the one” is no small undertaking, a good place to start is understanding your body and what types of dresses will flatter and best highlight your personal shape. We’ve looked to some of our favorite partners to help key us into some great tips and education when it comes to finding the best fit for our body types. Let the shopping begin!

hourglass In my recent experience giving suggestions to ladies with an hourglass body shape, I have found that almost any silhouette is flattering. The hourglass body shape is considered the ‘ideal’ body shape by many women. These ladies are very wellproportioned with curves in all the right places and a distinct waistline. Styles that are cinched or belted can help further accentuate the waistline, and a form-fitting dress that shows off curves is most often what these ladies are drawn to. Ruffles, bows and other dimensional details can also draw attention to the hips or bust and can actually make her curves seem bigger than what they are. If bigger busted brides happen to be self-conscious in that area, V-necks, halters, sweethearts and scoop necks can be slimming. Since this body shape can usually wear a variety of silhouettes, I still encourage ladies to try on a variety of styles. Often times, ladies will come in to the store looking for a specific silhouette and end up purchasing an entirely different style. It still boils down to whatever makes her feel the most beautiful.”

full figure

I am so glad that today, women and the fashion world are embracing every shape and size. Even though there are definite options if you do have a fuller figure—like an A-line princess gown or a one that accentuates the smallest part of the body such as an empire waist gown—a bride should ultimately find the dress that makes her feel the most beautiful. Just because she is a fuller figure, doesn’t mean she can’t wear a dress that a smaller size can wear. What I am going to do is adapt it to her and find out what is going to make her feel the most comfortable. For example, does she like to show off her shoulders? Arms? A little bit of bustline tastefully? Maybe she loves her calves, which could be accentuated with a hi-lo hemline. In the end, it’s about what will make her feel the most beautiful on her special day.”

pear

The best type of dress for a pear-shaped figure is the dress that makes you feel beautiful! We feel there are no longer ‘rules’ in bridal, and you truly should wear the dress you feel most beautiful in. If you want to camouflage your lower half, a soft ball gown is always a beautiful shape. This will really accentuate your waist and then just float across the hips! If you love your tush and hips, then go with a fitted style that accentuates all your beautiful curves! There are so many variations of the mermaid or fit to flare shape that you can find the perfect, fitted shape to highlight your figure.”

tall & thin For a slender and tall body shape, we recommend choosing a style that is figure flattering and doesn’t cut off in awkward places (this can shorten your height, and no one wants that!) We recommend a beautiful ball gown that accentuates the natural waist or a sheath gown with a deep, plunging V-neckline. Say yes to something beautiful that shows off your great figure in the most elegant way!”

petite The silhouette or style of gown we would suggest for a petite bride is sheath or A-line silhouettes. These styles are very flattering on most body shapes and tend to elongate the body. Although some styles will look amazing on any bride’s shape, we would recommend that petite brides stay away from ball gown silhouettes. Another style to look for in a gown is a natural waist, which can keep a petite bride from looking shorter. The rest is up to you!”

- Alyssa Kelley, Beloved Brides Fishers, IN

COLUMN/ SHEATH

I have found that an apple shaped body type normally avoids fit and flare, mermaid and trumpet silhouettes when it comes to wedding gowns. Most often, ladies with an apple shape choose a dress that draws attention away from certain areas of her body that she might be self conscious of, if any. An empire waist will help accentuate the waist at its smallest point, and ruching can be very helpful in hiding any area that she is uncomfortable with. Adding a belt to define the waistline can also be very appealing to her. Apple body shapes, in some cases, are busty. I would recommend structured shoulders with a scooped or V-neck line. I always suggest trying on several styles to see what best compliments her shape. Ultimately, choosing a dress really depends on what makes her feel most beautiful.”

THE EASIEST GUIDE TO changing your last name

AFTER THE WEDDING

Y

our newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.

1. GET THE ORIGINAL

3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE

5. UPDATE YOUR BANK

Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.

The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.

2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL

4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME

6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME

If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.

When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.

MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

LAUREN & JARED SPARKMAN

Lauren and Jared met for the first time while working on an Indianapolis music festival, but they really connected shortly after that, during an unexpected encounter on a bus tour of a local neighborhood. “He asked if he could sit by me on the bus, and the rest is history!” Lauren says. “We were both there to support a mutual friend, who we now credit with bringing us together. This friend even gave the blessing during our wedding ceremony.”

THE PROPOSAL

wedding

Jared’s proposal began with an impromptu request for an evening stroll with Lauren that led her to a downtown spot that was very special to them—the Indianapolis Repertory Theatre. “It wasn’t a huge spectacle,” Lauren fondly recalls. “It was a perfect, private moment under the bright, white lights of the theatre’s marquee.” Another special touch? Jared had arranged for a photographer to secretly take photos from across the street.

AN ALLURING WEDDING // Featured Wedding

THE PLANNING 'Understated,' 'magical' and 'excellent' were the three words Lauren and Jared knew they wanted their wedding to embody. “We knew we wanted it to be an authentic reflection of who we are as individuals and as a couple,” says Lauren. “Nothing too flashy, but definitely whimsical and well-produced.” Since Jared is a producer and Lauren works in events, they were able to plan everything themselves with the help of key resources and an amazing coordinator. In the end, the couple knew they wanted to stick to their clear vision for what they wanted—an intimate ceremony and incredible, live music. Lauren says, “That was the most important thing for us.”

THE DRESS Lauren had her heart set on a Hayley Paige gown and was thrilled to learn Marie Gabriel Couture Bridal had an upcoming trunk show for the line. Although she was swept away in the magic of the collection, trying on Cinderella-like dresses, she quickly decided a sequined-covered silhouette dress of her dreams was “the one.”

ADVICE FROM THE bride

Lauren says, “My advice is to be particular about the things that are a reflection of who you are —your values and passions— and don’t stress about the rest. Hand it off to the experts!”

72

WEDDINGDAY

THE VENUE Lauren says, “We started our venue search by looking for empty rooms and warehouses and unique, nontraditional wedding spaces. We were really looking for an understated venue that could be a blank canvas for us.” The couple fell in love with the gorgeous, historic church that is The Cyrus Place. They especially loved its unique details, that it was in the heart of their city and not far from where they met and now live. “It was better than the blank canvas we set out to find,” Lauren says. “It was a beautiful backdrop.”

CHLOE LUKA PHOTOGRAPHY

THE COLORS “I knew I wanted a neutral palette over a specific color,” says Lauren. “The venue was too beautiful to add much more, and I truly love taupe—as boring as that makes me sound! Our wedding planner worked a lot of soft, taupe drapery into the intimate ceremony space, along with candelabras and, of course, the stained glass windows. He also knew where to add some appropriate color pops with the blue and burgundy hydrangeas.”

WEDDINGDAY 73

SPECIAL TOUCHES This wedding was full of unique touches, including special musical contributions from friends—one of whom was American singer-songwriter, Jon McLaughlin. “Two good friends played the music at our ceremony and reception,” says Lauren. “We had an extra special acoustic performance by three of our friends (it happened later in the night), and everyone made a big circle around them and sang along. And my four-year-old nephew stole the show by singing ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight” from the Lion King at the reception. He was amazing and so brave!” Before the wedding, the couple also commissioned a local artist to create a drawing of the beautiful venue. “Then my husband designed all of the invitations, programs, table numbers, etc. himself,” says Lauren. A video booth for guests to record messages for the couple was a big hit, while food stations impressed, featuring a quinoa bar and sliders.

A

s wedding season started to slow, a venue caught Hannah Strickler of Design the Day’s eye. “As soon as you step into The Tinker House, it is so easy to get caught up in the endless possibilities of creating and what is possible in the space,” she says. The gorgeous locale offered a lot of natural wood and unique, copper elements. Inspired, Hannah created a moody, copper-infused palette that also featured maroon, navy and dark green. The ever-popular farm table used in the tablescape echoed the same dark feel with copper chargers, black flatware and black-stemmed glassware. With more and more brides planning weddings with an industrial feel, Hannah wanted to present something a little out of the box. The bridal look offered the perfect bit of edge with tulle, high slits and a two-piece design. The look was completed with an equally edgy ponytail, smoky eye, and deep lip detail. The unique look and feel continued with the florals as well. The hanging floral installation was nothing short of eyecatching and featured moody hues, hanging Amaranthus, berries and Edison bulbs.

THE VISION Inspired by rich colors, the feeling of romance and industrial elements, we dreamt of creating a shoot overflowing with inspiration. To finetune our vision, we turned to Sarah Farthing of All in the Details, who took it to new, enchanting heights! “For this shoot, we drew on the natural, industrial chic features of the building, added hints of celestial elements and tied it all together with a great deal of romantic candlelight and extravagant, floral displays,” says Sarah. Striking a beautiful balance between classic romance and trends, the shoot fuses unique details with the allure of a revamped, historic space.

THE VENUE Industrial venues continue to be more and more popular among brides and we, too, were drawn to the impressive openness and modern charm the newly rehabbed Armory in South Bend, Indiana offered. From the exposed brick and vintage vibes to its vaulted ceiling and different metal and wood elements, we were excited to see the space transformed. Sarah says, “After seeing this magnificent and recently renovated space, I knew I wanted to do something big. This building has so much character and history to it, that to do only one scene did not seem like a worthy tribute. In the end, our big vision of multiple sets came to life. Each scene embodied the same central theme, but then in its own way would slightly deviate to provide another highlighted trend.” JOSEPHINEY PHOTOGRAPHY

THE LOOK Our model wore two exquisite gowns from Leena’s Bridal in Carmel, Indiana. The ceremony look showcased a romantic, Martin Thornburg gown with hand-beaded, lace shoulder straps, while the reception look featured a stretch georgette Casablanca Bridal gown. “We also wanted to showcase how truly great a custom bustle can be and, with the help of Jennifer Stephens, owner of South Bend Seamstress, we were able to do just that,” explains Sarah. Bridal shoulder jewelry by En Vogue Bridal Accessories complemented both looks, while Adorn jewelry included striking blue sapphire and diamond earrings, diamond dangle earrings and a vintage diamond bracelet. Impress Jewelry Creations also provided a stunning ring set for the bride and a unique ring for the groom. The groom’s handsome, dark blue ensemble was courtesy of Chicago’s The Groomsman Suit. Inspired by modern renaissance, talented hair and makeup team members from Nicholas J. Salon & Spa perfected the bridal details by designing a voluminous and whimsical hairstyle and a fresh, clean makeup look, enhanced with a golden glow.

THE DÉCOR Ultra Violet, the Pantone Color of the Year, was a hue we knew we wanted to infuse. Copper and bronze—elements that naturally existed in the space—were also added, and the overall palette was softened with white accents and light jewel tones. Sarah also wanted to draw on the celestial trend of 2018. Her interpretation lent itself to deep blue hues and gold reminiscent of the night sky. While adequately shooting the sheer size of the space was a challenge, Burns Rent-Alls was more than willing to accommodate our large scale visions. The ceremony set consisted of a geometric hedge wall flanked by sheer, white drapery. Two wooden arches, omni glassware, copper flatware, gold beaded glass chargers, gold etched plates and chiavari chairs composed the gorgeous tablescape. Even the grand “I Do” letters marked yet another place to celebrate. All were graciously provided by Burns. And because any celestial scene needs a little moondust, extra special details included the shimmering linens and velvet chair covers from WIldflower Linens and wisteria shantung linen napkins from BBJ Linen. Sarah says,“Lastly, A Classic Party Rental provided us with a lilac organza overlay over a rich purple classic linen in order to set the scene for the get-ready space and to tie in the color scheme.”

THE FLORALS Matzke Florist truly went above and beyond in making our elaborate vision a reality. Manager and floral designer Jenifer Rupnow accomplished this by creating a stunning and romantic half circle arrangement for the beautifully intimate ceremony and a bridal bouquet that was both natural and striking. Jenifer’s designs included florals such as Aranthera James Storie orchids, Kale Ksenia, Cherry Vanilla Scoop Scabiosa, Allium Gladiator, Lisianthus varieties, Pauline Violet Ranunculus, Potomac Red Snapdragons, dusty miller, beautiful Black Bacarra, Amnesia, Moody Blue and sandstone roses. Contrasting the head table’s moody hues, a voluminous cascade of white florals was added and carried over to the balcony as well. Both sets featured a stunning array of florals such as orchids, white hybrid Delphinium El Galahad, white Playa Blanca roses and White Galaxy Dendrobium. 94

THE STATIONERY Eileen Adam of Noteworthy Expressions and Laura Reilly of Laura Reilly Calligraphy combined forces to bring exciting, high quality features to our shoot, including an eye-catching invitation suite, escort cards and place cards. Sarah says, “Laura’s personalized watercolor drawings of guests would definitely be a talked about feature at any event and could also double as a favor. It is my hope that this element, in addition to Eileen’s place cards neatly tied around the brass telescope favors at each setting, would leave a memorable impression on guests.”

THE CAKE Our two-tier fondant cake, designed by Froehlich’s, was reminiscent of a night sky. Not only did it creatively depict a couple in love on the bottom tier, it featured a husband and wife custom topper piece. The artful dessert was accentuated with Violet Vintage Rentals’ Elsa cake stand and Burns Rent-Alls’ Bellini champagne flutes, sphere chandelier and drapery. A beautiful midnight blue velvet linen and a gold sequin mermaid runner by BBJ Linen covered the cake table.

THE FOOD To highlight the on-site catering The Armory provides, we also worked with Melissa Barenie with Navarre Hospitality Group to showcase just one of their gourmet meals. It consisted of pan seared corvina with pistachio cilantro gremolata, served with herb roasted Yukon Gold potatoes and fresh market vegetables.
