Inspired by the airy, Italian countryside theme, Kerrie and Matt pulled together a wedding that was elegant with a flair of bold to match their personalities. The couple had an excellent formula for finding vendors for their perfect day. “First, it was vetting options to ensure they fit in with our creative vision aesthetically and had a good online presence, reviews, etc.," Kerrie says. Once they talked with the vendors, the happy couple knew they would help accomplish the vision of their intimate backyard wedding!

“Ask yourself what the most important things are for your wedding day, and plan accordingly (aside from your dress, that’s a given). For instance, we agreed on these 3 things as our top areas of focus: 1. Photography, 2. Food/Drinks, 3. Guest Experience. That will guide which vendors you choose, where to shoot for the moon and what to exclude!”

his shoot is pure magic! “I wanted to show intimacy in this styled elopement, meshing several ideas together—boho, natural, dark, moody and magical,” Dee of D’Isjah Lyons Photography explains. The venue was the perfect place for it. With all the crystals, unique furniture and dark areas, it brings in whimsy and some moodiness. And we are obsessed with the bride’s look. Between the vintage vibes from the bell sleeves on the dress to the subtle addition of contrast with the baby’s breath in the bride’s hair, everything was carefully and intentionally chosen for this shoot. THE EASIEST GUIDE TO changing your last name

AFTER THE WEDDING

Y

our newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.

1. GET THE ORIGINAL

3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE

5. UPDATE YOUR BANK

Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.

The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.

2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL

4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME

6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME

If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.

When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.

MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

LE SHOOT Y T

O SI G N C

For WeddingDay’s third annual Style Shoot Design Contest, our participants had the chance to utilize the two 2021 Pantone Colors of the Year in three different themes to bring their shoots to life. The teams were challenged to pair Ultimate Gray and/or Illuminating with one of our preselected themes: Go Wild, Over the Rainbow and Avant Garde. We would like to thank all the participants as picking a winner was a very difficult decision for our team to make! Along with this year’s winner— who stood out among the rest— our team decided to highlight three other amazing shoots who also blew us away and captured these themes beautifully.

Making us feel as though we were dropped right into an exotic rainforest, this talented team designed a perfect representation of our Go Wild theme, titled “Urban Jungle Glam”, for Follow Your Arrow Photography to capture. Despite discussing all the themes with the creative team, Go Wild was the theme that resonated most with everyone. The team raves, “We loved being able to incorporate the wild theme in every aspect—from live snakes to the details on the cake!” They wanted to add glam to the theme and think the contrast between the faux animal pelts paired with the crystal dinnerware brings that glamorous element. The uniquely designed stationery also gives all the wild vibes!

WEDDINGDAY

35

To unify the shoot's theme with the bride, the team wanted her to look edgy. “We went BIG!” they gush. “Our artists added gold flakes and rhinestones to our bride’s face in an animal pattern and finished the look with a smokey eye.” The gown also had to bring the glamour and edge, and the team felt this beaded one from Here Comes the Dress was the perfect juxtaposition to the bold makeup!

36

WEDDINGDAY

The cake from Steel City Bakery was kept rather classic to not overpower the shoot with too many complex details. Pantone's Ultimate Gray was added in the bottom to represent elephant hide. No jungle would be complete without voluminous plants and colorful blooms! Thode Floral provided moth orchids and anthurium to bring the jungle to life while pampas grass and dried palms brought more of a savannah feel to the shoot. The team also used yellow roses to incorporate Pantone's Illuminating to the look.

With a fun take on our Over the Rainbow theme, Jasmine Norris Photography and Samantha Mitchell Photography brought the colorful vision to life in the form of pastel polka dots. Ultimate Gray and Illuminating peek through in different areas of the shoot; even on the grooms! The team explains, “We loved the fresh colors with the pastel theme and loved that it also showcased the rainbow and the LGBTQ+ community without being the typical bright rainbow colors!”

The Ivory Foundry was the perfect venue for this shoot. With open floor plans to provide space for all of a couple’s guests and large windows to let in plenty of natural light, the team was able to fill it to the brim with light and airy pastel details! The chandeliers overhead helped the team capture the elegant feel they were hoping for, too. As always, it was the décor and details that really brought this shoot to life. The balloon wall, grooms’ bow ties and stunning centerpieces feed into the subtle polka dot theme. We are also obsessed with the unique cigar lounge and champagne flute wall! The four-tiered cake is almost too glamorous to eat. We are especially in love with the pastel watercolor design throughout the cake’s icing and those beautiful fondant flowers. Both the blue and gray suits are gorgeous and look great with the pastel bow ties, but we can all agree the luxurious polka-dot cape on the officiant's suit steals the show. Nothing adds more regality and dramatic flair than a cape!

Theme: Avant Garde

FINALIST

The vision for this shoot came from the traditional use of the venue. Kay from Kay Warner Photography explains, “Avenue 912 is a rock concert venue and I had the idea to create a wedding here that would attract the ‘different’ and ‘off the beaten path’ type of client that frequents this venue. I chose to stay away from anything that was ‘mainstream’ and went beyond any limits of what a traditional wedding looks like.” Every detail of this shoot was carefully chosen, and Kay made sure she got exactly what she wanted no matter how difficult it was to find them. The mirrored aisle, alternative lighting, smoke elements, drapery and unique glassware all bring this theme together. Providing the right amount of contrast, the white invitation suite designed by Your Little Details perfectly matches the theme. We love the extra flair the metallic edging adds to the suite! 40

WEDDINGDAY

The dark cake is so elegant! Kay says, “The cake direction was to mirror the dark makeup of the bride.” We are obsessed with the way the square bottom tier contrasts with the classic round top tiers! “Finding a dress boutique with non-traditional attire was more difficult,” Kay shares. Both of the dresses the team ended up choosing were perfect for the mood they were trying to set. The black dress brings glamour and pushes the limits to what a wedding dress can be while the gray one brings one of the Pantone Colors of the Year into the shoot in a unique way. The faux hawk on the bride and her dark makeup amp up the moodiness! Theme: Go Wild This exotic bohemian beach elopement was inspired by the complications COVID has brought to elopements. “With COVID, couples have had to forfeit their destination weddings and decrease their guest count. This shoot shows couples the perfect way to celebrate as if you are eloping in the tropics,” Brittany from 1945 Event Co. raves. The creative team wanted to bring the tropics to the beach! You can’t have a jungle without plenty of leopard print, bold colors and greenery! The team also wanted to combine multiple textures to the scene to create a fun and inviting environment. One of their favorite designs is the colorful plates and place settings to make an ombré effect as you move down the table.

FINALIS T The dessert table is a highlight of the shoot. Brittany explains, “There were two specialty cocktails available for guests as well as assorted fun colored macarons, candies and the perfect simple beachy cake topped with a tropical flower for the bride and groom to cut.” Silk flowers made up the bouquet and boutonnière. Rich tropical greens and white hydrangeas made up both the bouquet and the floral detail on the triangular arbor. The creative team went a different route with the bridal attire. Instead of a traditional dress, they leaned into the beachy theme with a bathing suit and cover-up! For the bride's makeup and hair, the team kept it fun with waves and bright eye makeup. They also added a flower crown for some of the shots to bring in a more boho feel.

The culinary experience as well as the stunning views from this top-of-the-tower venue were what solidified it as the place where Megan and Jon wanted to begin their lives together as husband and wife. Many of the vendors who brought their mid-century modern celebration to life were recommended to them by friends and family. And we are absolutely in love with their Michigan fall color palette! Another quirky touch is the disco balls in their tablescapes that represent their mutual love of Elton John.

WHAT WE

love

Megan was gifted a purse made from her mother’s wedding dress that Jon’s aunt made for her. “I am very sentimental and as we are extremely lucky to have had both of our parents present at our wedding and married themselves. The purse was such a special gift, that came together from both sides of the family, that I will cherish forever,” Megan gushes.

PRO SPOTLIGHT

Kai Davis KAI DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY

The best wedding photographers are focused on you as a couple and telling your story through the images they capture. And they shouldn’t be afraid to sneak a couple of candid moments that will end up being the photos you adore for a lifetime! All of that sums up Kai from Kai Davis Photography. She loves to be fun, silly and creative with her couples while also making them feel comfortable with her through the photography process. Her biggest goal is to capture you two for who you really are and have your personality shine through in all of her images. The best part of the job for her is being able to witness and capture those natural moments of pure love on the day of your wedding. We had the opportunity to talk with Kai and learn more about her business and photography process. 62

COVER SHOOT

Modern Bohemian WEDDINGDAY’S EXCLUSIVE DETROIT COVER SHOOT

PENNY RALENE PHOTOGRAPHY

The Vision When Emmaleigh of Emmaleigh White Wedding and Event Planning set out to design the look for our Detroit Spring/Summer 2022 cover shoot, she aimed to bring boho romance to life with a modern twist. “The vision I had for this shoot came together beautifully. It turned out more beautiful than I could have imagined,” Emmaleigh raves. We are in love with all the soft and delicate details and especially love the way Penny Ralene Photography captured the magic of it all! WEDDINGDAY

71

The Venue Simply Social Detroit was the perfect blank canvas for our romantic shoot! In fact, the color palette and theme were inspired once Emmaleigh saw the space. She thought the white walls and black ceilings were a beautiful modern space, but she wanted to add some boho to bring in a splash of rosy color to it. The large windows and flowing white curtains disperse plenty of natural light throughout the venue, allowing for gorgeous, bright and airy photos!

The Looks Our bride wore two gorgeous dresses from The Wedding Shoppe for a ceremony and reception look. The combination of the soft blush dress and the moody black dress brings out a different aspect of the shoot while pairing nicely with the allblack ensemble from SuitShop. Emmaleigh shares, “I wanted something that would make a statement, and what better than a black dress?” The half-up, half-down hairdo and natural makeup that BÜK Weddings styled is super bohemian and help bring this shoot to life. And we love the touch of pearls in the bride’s hair!

The Decor The wicker sweetheart table brought in boho vibes while keeping the shoot intimate and focused on the couple. To create a mix of boho and modern, many of the décor items were a balance between black and blush. Between Burns Special Events and Styled Event Design's décor, a stunning mix of textures and colors was brought to life in this shoot!

The S tationery Darling Design Co.'s stationery designs were the perfect complement to our modern boho theme. We love the soft blush colors and modern, romantic fonts!

76

The Florals No boho celebration is complete without plenty of florals filling the space! “I wanted soft pink flowers throughout, along with incorporating dry grass to bring out the softness and boho vibes,” Emmaleigh explains. The florals on the circular arbor are a perfect execution of this soft look while the dried grasses sticking out of the floral arrangements and adoring the sweetheart table embody the bohemian style perfectly! The Cake & Desserts The three-tiered cake from Homestead Kitchen looks so beautiful, we don’t want anyone to eat it! The combination of the simple blush and black tiers with the intricate gold leafing and floral adornment is absolutely show-stopping. “The cake was so unique and romantic,” Emmaleigh says. “It was the star of the show!” We also love the elegant touch of macarons in glassware on the tablescape to bring in color (and taste!) to the design. 78
