JAMIE VESTER PHOTOGRAPHY // About the Photographer Hello! I’m Jamie–a wife, boy mom and dog lover. I’m based in Indiana, but I absolutely love to travel for weddings. I’m the photographer you call for relaxed, fun wedding photos and when you want all of those in-between moments captured! I had the best time working with WeddingDay Magazine for this cover shoot and loved the outcome of the photos! Everything was very detailed and planned out so well that it made my job easy. The Indianapolis Zoo is such a unique venue for a wedding with endless possibilities for photo ops. From the dolphins and the giraffes, to feeding the flamingos (quite fun as I did this myself!) and the wonderful butterfly gardens–your opportunities are endless.
WEDDINGDAY 3
FROM THE EDITOR We recognize that our time spent with you (bride and groom) is relatively short – preengagement to post-wedding could be anywhere from several months to a mere one year, so our goal is to give you our absolute best and most in wedding planning advice and inspiration each and every day. Featured weddings, inspiration shoots, and examples of our vendors' work are displayed in print, online and through our social media channels, and available whenever and however you want it! We understand that budgets come in many different sizes, so we are constantly looking for creative ideas that brides can take and make their own and that works within their budget. We’re anxious to see yours!

hat do you get when you mix the sturdy, stoic design of the Gary Aquatorium with its beachy, organic shoreline? For Michelle Nikitaras of Unveiled Weddings and Events, this was an opportunity to create something unique. She says, “This beachy vibe was so much fun, and I just love the soft, flowing details bouncing off the steady concrete of the Aquatorium.” She partnered with an all-star team of vendors to create a truly ethereal style shoot that combined the free-spirited shoreline with the classic structure of the venue. This shoot encompassed an earthy vibe which came to life in the flowy, lace dress and soft, purple palette seen in the décor and florals. The tablescape was completed with accents of gold chargers and flatware. The makeup also paired well with the theme in the form of a subtle, smokey eye, giving the bride a daring look of elegance. The geode, rock-candy cake was a truly eye-catching touch that added a modern twist. All the elements in this shoot, including the lilac-shaded calligraphy, came together to form a new style. Michelle sums it up when she says, “It is fun combining different styles and colors to create something unique.”

KELSI & TYLER SCHWEDE
Kelsi and Tyler met in college as architectural students but, unfortunately, Tyler moved to Chicago after his senior year. However, their story would not end there as they reconnected and started dating when Kelsi started graduate school. Later, they celebrated her graduation by taking a trip to the Grand Canyon where Tyler popped the question. Kelsi says, “It was the biggest surprise of my life! I actually thought he was kidding at first. It was private, intimate and romantic. Everything I could’ve asked for.”

the architecture of romance
AN INDUSTRIAL VENUE MEETS URBAN DESIGN
THE PLANNING As a goal-oriented woman, Kelsi knew just what she wanted for her wedding. Kelsi says, “We started the planning process by sitting down and outlining each of our top two priorities. For me, it was photography and the décor. For Tyler, it was the venue and the open bar.” With their priorities set, the couple went off to create the industrial, chic wedding of their dreams.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF ROMANCE // Featured Wedding
THE DRESS Kelsi did a lot of searching to find the perfect dress. The work was well worth it though, resulting in her ideal Stella York dress. She says, “I felt like the best version of myself and could see myself getting married in it. After being frustrated while shopping, once I tried this one on, it was an easy choice.”

THE VENUE The type of venue Kelsi and Tyler wanted was an obvious choice. They wanted one that would speak to their roots as designers. Kelsi says, “We were looking for a space with significant and beautiful architecture. That’s how we chose the Arts United Center. The building is actually a theater that was the last building designed by one of our favorite architects, Louis Kahn. It is a beautiful space that has exposed brick, concrete and the most beautiful lighting.”
THE DÉCOR As architectural designers and creatives, Kelsi and Tyler made many of the décor pieces themselves. They designed their “K&T” marquee letters, candle holders, donut wall and light fixture for the head table. The couple opted for more subtle, neutral tones in their décor that would balance with the natural textures of the building such as the brick walls.

WHAT WE
love
A wedding is truly a family celebration. Kelsi and Tyler bonded with their family by working with them to create items for the wedding. Kelsi admits, “You can’t do it all on your own. Allow the people that love you to help you.” This couple was able to create some once-in-a-lifetime memories by working closely with their loved ones before the wedding even took place.
SPECIAL TOUCHES Kelsi and Tyler knew they had to incorporate tons of fun into their reception. So, the savvy couple collected some silly props for guests to rock out with on the dance floor. “This included horse heads, feather boas, funny hats, huge sunglasses and silly wigs,” says Kelsi. “Guests will remember how much fun these were and that the dance floor was always packed! The pictures are priceless! From the beginning, it was our goal to have an amazing party with our favorite people.”

hen Cynthia Basker of Celebrated Events and Amber McNeill of Brick & Pine Photography saw the charming, rustic interior of Sundance Studios Vintage Wedding Event Space in Benton Harbor, Michigan, they knew they had to create an equally alluring style shoot within its walls. “We had our hearts set on meshing jewel tone colors with an earthy, eclectic-meetsvintage-boho vibe,” says Amber. Sure enough, this shoot resulted in a dreamy, soulful aesthetic.
One of the incredible elements from this shoot is the moody, deep orange and green stationery with a light, geometric design, which perfectly complemented the theme. The décor included woven dreamcatchers, metal accents like golden candlesticks and lanterns as well as burgundy glassware. To top off the moody look, the florals were beautifully designed with hot pink peonies, yellow-orange French tulips, Purple Allium, pampas grass, Eucalyptus and coral roses, to name a few. This theme was translated into the bridal look with a vintagestyle gown and soft, smokey makeup. To tie the palette together, other elements were pulled in like hand-dyed napkins, a cake decorated with gorgeous feather accents and vintage furniture.

FEATURED WEDDING
KENDRA CLAPP OLGUÍN & TYLER WAY After Kendra and Tyler met at a trunk show at Kendra’s work, Tyler asked her out for drinks, and the two bonded over their creative and funny personalities. As they dated, Tyler took photos of their many adventures and decided to use them in his proposal by hanging the photos up on a museum wall to spell out “Will you marry me?”. But Kendra, who is not a big fan of surprises, knew something was up before they even made it to the proposal site, and Tyler clued her into what was going on in order to steady her nerves. Kendra says, “After saying 'yes' and embracing, we took time to look through all of the pictures together. It was a beautiful moment to sit and reflect on all of the little moments that made our relationship. I totally ruined the ‘surprise’ of the proposal, but looking back, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. It was so completely us.”

Kendra says, “I knew I didn’t want to simply follow what others do so I think it took me some time to shake that– shake everyone’s expectations of what the wedding would be, and start planning something for us and how we envisioned the day to be like.” This vision clicked with her wedding planner, florist and good friend Katie Huber of Kenley Event Design. Kendra told her what she pictured and started curating a celebration with a minimalist and organic aesthetic.

MODERN MUSE // Featured Wedding
THE BRIDAL FASHION As a modern woman, Kendra aimed for a more contemporary bridal style. She had been following the brand Elizabeth Suzann on Instagram for months because of their mod style. Kendra ended up choosing a simple yet edgy jumpsuit from the designer. It was the perfect choice for her and matched the entire mood of the wedding.
WHAT WE
THE COLORS When Kendra and Tyler thought about the design for their big day, they wanted to stick with a more neutral palette paired with richer colors. Kendra wanted blush as part of her color scheme, as pink is her favorite color, mixed with earthy elements for a soft atmosphere. She says, “I played a lot with natural textures. From the wooden tables to the rose gold placemats, the ceramics, the concrete of the space, the linen napkins and the natural paper of the menus and placemats. I wanted it to feel organic.”

love
Kendra and Tyler stayed true to themselves when planning their wedding. It can be easy to be swayed by those around you when planning, but this couple did not let that get in their way. Kendra says, “Explore your options and remind yourself that you don’t have to do what other people have done. The day is about you and there aren’t a lot of opportunities for you to do exactly what you want to do, so take it and run with it. Make it yours.”
ARIELLE TEFT PHOTOGRAPHY
THE VENUE The couple’s venue choice is nothing short of total inspiration and style. They chose the Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM). Kendra says, “The GRAM is modern and clean. As a well-designed building, you don’t have to do much and that worked for me. The veranda we were in was so under-utilized. It’s this beautiful, concrete area overlooking one of the most picturesque streets of downtown Grand Rapids.” Here, the couple was able to fuse the sleek environment with their organic style for a truly expressive celebration.

SPECIAL TOUCHES Kendra and Tyler put their own creativity into their wedding. Kendra handmade all of the ceramics used for the table settings. Their guests were even allowed to take them as keepsakes. Tyler, in the same style that he proposed, used the photos from their proposal to spell out “I do, I do!” on one of the museum’s walls.

THE EASIEST GUIDE TO changing your last name
AFTER THE WEDDING
Y
our newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.
1. GET THE ORIGINAL
3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE
5. UPDATE YOUR BANK
Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.
The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.
2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL
4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME
6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME
If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.
When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.
MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

TARYN & JON BUCHER
Taryn and Jon met at school while attending Indiana University. “Yes, we are college sweethearts. Neither of us knew each other before our first couple of years in Bloomington, but ever since we stepped foot on campus, our lives have never been the same,” says Taryn. The pair initially met in a biology class and ended up falling in love during study sessions paired with late-night pizza. Six years later, Jon popped the question when he invited Taryn for a picnic in Highland Park to celebrate her birthday. The couple then went out to celebrate with family that Jon had invited to be part of that life-changing day.

THE PLANNING Taryn and Jon knew two things when they started planning. First, that they would have the wedding at their church and second, that they had to have food stations at their reception. Taryn says, “Jon and I are big foodies so this was extremely important to us, and it was actually one of the first questions we asked when we were shopping for our reception venue, as we found that most venues had partnerships with catering companies.” After deciding this, it was easy for them to narrow down the vendor choices and choose their date.

THE DRESS When Taryn first started dress shopping, she thought she would go for more of a boho, lace feel and never thought she would choose the dress she ended up with! After numerous appointments and countless letdowns in what other salons had to offer, Taryn ended up at Marie Gabriel Couture and fell in love instantly. Taryn says, “When we went back to the dressing room, the Cosette gown by Matthew Christopher was the first dress I tried on at Marie Gabriel, and I pretty much knew it was the one instantaneously.”

THE PALETTE When it came to planning the details for the day, like theme and décor, Taryn says, “After a few meetings, our wedding planner Lori put together an inspiration board for us that focused on a French country vibe with an emphasis on lush flowers and foliage accented by pillar candles and flowy fabrics.” The couple curated a romantic, elegant theme with organic elements to cast an overall whimsical feel. This included hues of periwinkle, lavender and dusty blue blended with blushes and white tones accented with natural greenery, as well as the textures of ribbon, mercury glass and wood. An element that embodied this theme was the head table floral suspension piece that offered an eye-catching design to the room. 78

THE VENUE The couple chose the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields not only for their love of art, but because “The venue is very open with all of the glass windows allowing for an outdoor feel while still being inside and covered.” Taryn continues, “This was important to me because I knew there would be a chance of rain in April.” The open, modern style of Deer Zink Pavilion also allowed for Taryn and Jon to have food stations which made the venue even more appealing to the couple.

ADVICE FROM THE bride
"Try not to get too caught up in the timeline, schedule and chaos of the day. Take a moment to step back and enjoy the sacrament taking place. We highly recommend doing a first look together and planning for some alone time with each other and/or your bridal party, whether it be on a party bus/ limo or before/after the reception. We were so thankful that we had a private room for the bridal party to sit back, relax and refresh during the first half of the cocktail hour."

THE DETAILS Taryn wanted to pay special attention to some of the smaller items on the list like the stationery and guest favors. She says, “I am also very passionate about stationery and those details were very important to me, as well as incorporating calligraphy, velvet ribbon, wax seals and vintage stamps.” Luckily, she was able to partner with Athena Street Creative to create beautiful, watercolor stationery featuring a map. “I knew before we even met with our stationery vendor that I wanted to create a wedding map for the invitation sets since my family is from Minnesota and Jon’s family is from Ohio,” says Taryn. Taryn also handmade all of the macarons left at the tables as guest favors.

THE VISION The zoo is a place to have fun and be curious, but — more importantly — it is a place where we can create heartwarming memories with the ones we love. As an unexpected and exciting venue option—zoos are often overlooked, yet they host some of the most contemporary, eye-catching event spaces. That is why we looked to the Indianapolis Zoo as the location for this cover shoot. Its earthy spaces and exotic animals offered unusual inspiration for an organic and delicate theme with soft hues of purple and floral elements. Sarah Farthing of All in the Details was the experienced planner who brought this vision to life. Like the whimsy and inquisitiveness that you may feel while exploring the zoo, we wanted to create a similar feeling of excitement and invite an innovative look into wedding venues.

THE FLORALS Inspired by the zoo animals and Sarah’s overall vision, Violets are Blue Floral Design, created pieces of greenery to mimic the fauna of the zoo. As for the bouquet, Sarah says, “I wanted the bouquet to look like a living piece that was freshly pulled together from the surrounding environment and Violets are Blue delivered just that.” The florist used roses, spray roses, dusty miller, ivy, varieties of orchids and Lisianthus in order to curate these exquisite floral pieces. 90

WILD ROMANCE // Cover Shoot
THE DÉCOR “I wanted the venue, the animals, as well as the surrounding natural elements to be the star of this cover shoot.” says Sarah. “As a result, I went for a very calming and cool palette of gray and lavender, all the while bringing in accents of greenery and other tones that occurred naturally on the butterflies that initially inspired my vision for this shoot.” Captured by Jamie Vester Photography, this vision came to life with the work of the entire team. LGi Linens provided the subtle, purple linens as well as silver, textured linens to add depth—bringing this palette together. A Classic Party Rental provided glassware and gold flatware that perfectly matched the subtle theme.
WEDDINGDAY 91
THE VENUE “There are so many different areas to explore and animals to learn about,” says Sarah. “It’s an amazingly inspirational space in its own right.” The zoo offers several event spaces, such as the Hilbert Conservatory, where flowers and plants served as bright touches for the background and the Hulman Riverhouse, which boasts floor-to-ceiling windows for an open, romantic feeling. Other spaces include the Efroymson Wedding Garden, an idyllic scene for ceremonies and the new Bicentennial Pavilion, a modern space perfect for a chic reception. Another thrilling event spot is the Dolphin Dome where the team created an elegant, cocktail hour complete with delicious appetizers from Centerplate with, of course, dolphins! The zoo also offers interactive moments with their animals. Jackie Sabrosky, Wedding & Events Sales Manager at the Indianapolis Zoo says, “A new and memorable experience that will tickle you pink is the flamingo feed experience! The new flamingo feed allows the engaged couple to come up close and personal with our flamingos by feeding them one of their favorite foods, krill!”

WILD ROMANCE // Cover Shoot
THE LOOK The team designed a bridal look that complemented the natural hues of the shoot. That Special Touch Bridal Boutique provided the “Lindsey” dress by Morilee. Sarah says, “I knew it was the right ball gown for this cover shoot. The mixed pattern embroidery embellishments on the gown alternated between a floral design and a pattern that some might say was reminiscent of an animal. It was perfect for our flora and fauna shoot!” This gown was paired with a soft, textured updo as well as neutral-tone makeup, giving the bride an overall sophisticated look created by Andi Sherman of Something Blue Stylists. The shoot also included a second look that was an Allure Bridal gown. Sarah says, “It was clean and elegant in the front, but the back was dramatic and accented with cascading buttons. It was the picture-perfect combination of timeless and modern that I had been looking for in a second look.” JAMIE VESTER PHOTOGRAPHY

THE STATIONERY Eileen Adam of Noteworthy Expressions designed stationery pieces that brought in the organic components of the shoot as well as the color palette. Sarah says, “The invitation suite she produced consisted of a refreshing display of soft and dusty purple accents that are increasing in popularity due to the Pantone color of the year.” Laura Reilly Calligraphy made acrylic décor pieces that featured elegant lettering for an ornate touch.
THE CAKE & DESSERTS Classic Cakes delivered a four-tiered cake with fondant, floral details that were hand-painted with the same hue of purple as the linens. Sarah says, “They also created delicious and edible place cards!” The place cards provided another level of detail to the shoot that show what a difference small elements can make. Jack’s Donuts provided the donuts for the cocktail hour dessert display which showed a fun way to incorporate, edible décor into a wedding.
