FROM THE EDITOR Detroit Michigan: called “the city with a creative heart and a Motown soul” by a travel site, is also rich in revitalization and best known for its history of automobile manufacturing. That creative heart also feeds into its wedding industry, with an abundance of venue styles and beautiful floral and décor. Speaking of this issue, inside you will find our annual Photography Guide of some of the best Midwest photographers. You’ll also want to be sure to turn to page 42 to see the winners of WeddingDay’s "Best Wedding Photograph of 2019" contest, as chosen by our editors (it’s been a secret until now!). This romance is exactly what our style shoot team was chasing. Sarah Farthing, owner of All in the Details, explains that this shoot’s theme was centered around the concept of a “Progressive Prairie.” She says, “I wanted to honor the history of this amazing barn from the 1800s through the shoot, but also add contemporary elements to show how this venue could be considered progressive in both its modernization and preservation. The prairie element came about because the Rock Run Creek Barn is situated on a beautiful property, and the inspiration of wildflowers is all around. The combination of all of these elements served as the initial vision for this styled shoot.” Sarah and the team focused on keeping an organic touch, staying true to the property’s history. “I wanted it to feel like the bride could have gone outside that morning and picked her bouquets and centerpieces,” Sarah explains. The florals, designed by Bee Season Floristry, were picked locally to give off a “fresh from the farm” vibe. Blooms like thistle, ornamental grasses, brown-eyed Susans and strawflowers were used to create a light and airy feel throughout the shoot. The stationery by Noteworthy Expressions continues to tie in the whimsical wildflower theme, down to each calligraphed letter!

istory meets design in this Exclusive WeddingDay Style Shoot. Located in Goshen, Indiana, Rock Run Creek Barn is a lovable Midwest highlight for any couple wanting to add a touch of history to their barn wedding. Built in the 1850s, the barn is surrounded by peaceful fields to provide a perfect escape for a big city bride or an elegant space for a country wedding. Rock Run Creek Owner Elvera Miller explains that the space was recently renovated in 2018, but still maintains many of its original historical features. She says, “The inside walls of the barn are built out of rough sawn poplar wood and hand-hewn poplar beams. If you’re inside looking up at the ceiling, you will still see the original wood shingles. The crystal chandeliers add a soft glow on the wood, creating a warm, romantic feel.”

WEDDINGDAY 17

Contemporary elements such as the blue and white goblets, gold-rimmed champagne flutes, blush and platinum china and Gisele flatware rented from Burns Rent-Alls provided a perfect touch of modernization. The blue toile napkins, cake table linen and the white garden lace top runner from Chair Covers and Linens gave a touch of a traditional wedding. If a bride is looking to add a few vintage vibes, Rock Run Creek Barn comes with a variety of exclusive rentals in their booking package, including barrels, old doors, crates, wood slabs, arches and easels. Rock Run Creek Barn is perfect for a couple looking for that extra rustic touch to their barn wedding. Elvera adds, “We offer a spacious warming kitchen, inside restroom facilities and dressing rooms for both the bride and groom. You can choose from multiple ceremony spots: one on the lawn and one in the meadow by the beautiful covered bridge. Our basement can be set up for a ceremony in case of inclement weather, but can also be used as a cocktail hour and a buffet food lines.” With a diverse selection of natural backdrops, your wedding will create lasting memories at Rock Run Creek Barn!

Kyle Griggs NEW YOU OASIS

Josephiney Photography 24 WEDDINGDAY

You just got engaged and your happily ever after is now within reach! But planning a ceremony, picking a venue and finding the perfect dress can be stressful. It’s easy to push your self-care to the side during the turmoil of wedding planning. Press pause on the madness for a day to treat yourself at the spa for a much-needed relaxation and refreshment session.

Kyle Griggs, the owner of New You Oasis, knows how important it is to take time for you when you’re getting married. Between customized massage, facials, waxing and sauna sessions, New You Oasis is ready to pamper you. Local to the South Bend area, the team at New You Oasis is committed to helping you relax and recharge with professional and personalized service. We sat down with Kyle to discuss his passion for helping brides rejuvenate before their big day.

you tell us about what motivated owner, what do you can a couple planning their WD: How WD: Can WD: Asstrivea business you to start your business? to accomplish? What should wedding use your services? wife and sister were both working potential clientele know about you? believe a couple can utilize our KG: "My KG: "Iservices independently–one is an esthetician "I strive to be the best I can possibly by learning them first then KG: be every day. I strive to make sure utilizing them. Planning and the other one is a massage therapist. I a wedding is one of the wanted to make sure they could continue to pursue their dreams along with bringing a very unique and different business to South Bend that has never been brought here before. We all came together as a team and came up with the idea of a wellness spa and here we are! I also wanted to make sure that we made all of the services affordable for everyone to be able to enjoy services not just a select few as self-care is very important but many hesitate to go into a spa setting because of the way this industry acts at times. We created a spa for everyone to enjoy and pamper themselves!"

my clients and everyone around me are happy and get results. I strive to be a good person and make sure I treat everyone with love and respect, just how I would like to be treated. I am also a realistic person. I am not perfect, nor is anyone else, but I can assure my clients they will be treated with the utmost respect and leave with the results they came in looking to get. I would say that 98.9% of our clients leave completely happy and satisfied."

WD: KG:

KG:

What is your business background? What skills should we know about? "I have been involved in a few different businesses mainly as an investor to assist with others' passions and dreams. I did not go to college, nor do I have a degree, but I had a vision of what I wanted to do. I wanted to help others be successful, and I did it. I do not have any special skills, or should I say, no more than anyone else. I believe it is what you put into something and then utilize the skills needed for it to become a success. I think it’s more of opportunities that come your way or someone providing the tools for you and you learn how to utilize those tools to become the person you are today. If you operate your life with purpose, pride and passion, eventually you can succeed at whatever you put your mind to." you say that your passion lies WD: Would in your business? If so, what is that passion and how does it affect your business? agree that my passion lies KG: "Iin would my business. I love helping others

and seeing people succeed and do great things. At the spa, I try to make people understand their worth and also brighten up their day. I make sure all customers are happy and feel like family when visiting us. I believe my business thrives when my team and I build relationships with our customers and help them make informed decisions." do you differentiate your WD: How services from other business that

provide the same services? What makes you stand out? "We do have a few services that are similar to other spas in our area, but we have services that have never been brought to our area ever. The difference isn’t with the service, but with the therapists. If a therapist has a passion for what they do and build a relationship with their customers, then that’s what makes us stand out. On top of that, we are realistic and make sure the services are affordable for everyone."

KG:

us about your services. What WD: Tell is beneficial? How do you help your

clients (i.e. enhance their health)? "I have many unique services such as Sensory Deprivation, Halotherapy, Cupping Massage, Dermaplaning, Sugaring (waxing) Infrared Sauna, Customized Massages, Customized Facials and more. We help our clients by being patient and taking the time to actually listen to them and figure out together which service best suits them. It is up to the client to enhance their health all we can do is inform and guide."

I BELIEVE MY BUSINESS THRIVES WHEN MY TEAM AND I BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR CUSTOMERS AND HELP THEM MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS.

WD: Why do you love your industry? this industry because I get to KG: "Ihelplovepeople. I get to see smiles on

people’s faces. I get to see people try something new that they have never done before and I’m part of that experience. I’m happy to be part of the change in people that comes with this industry and the services. I get to assist people with one of the most important choices in life, which is self-care!"

most stressful things you can encounter and it is important that you take care of yourself. A lot of couples such as my wife and I always worried about how to make everyone else happy and forgot to focus on us and what would help us destress and decompress, even for an hour in the day. We have many services that couples can benefit from and we will assure and make sure they have the ultimate relaxation experience while visiting us. Everything in life is a choice and they have to make the choice to come in and let us do our jobs right and efficiently to help relieve a little stress and worry for their special day."

tips would you give your WD: What clients? How can they use your

services to enhance their lives? "The biggest tips I can give to all my clients are first of all treat yourself to something nice. Second, make an informed decision, not emotional. Third, make sure you do your research and come prepared. Fourth, ask questions so you completely understand what you are doing. And last, make sure you relax! Trust in us that we are doing our job and will get you the results you came in for.

KG:

As far as an enhancement in lives, all I can say is the services we have to offer are repetitive, not magic. You need to utilize the service more than once or twice to get to your goal of results you are wanting. Many people believe you can walk in a spa and get the Hollywood results you see every day after one visit. That’s not the reality at all, and it’s important to worry about you and what others are doing. Everyone is special and unique in their own way. If you tell us what you need, and we will sit down and help you get the results of the enhancement you’re looking for."

is your favorite thing about WD: What what you do? What creates fun

in your job? "My favorite thing to do is meet people and help them! I love meeting new people, and making sure they have a great experience while visiting us! The fun part is learning something new about someone and what they have experienced in their lives. I enjoy the smiles and great laughs we have with customers."

FOREVER&R

FEATURED WEDDING

Ryan Wasoski, an experienced jeweler, wanted to create something spectacular to give Regan Harding on her birthday, the night he planned to surprise her with a proposal. Mirroring her unique style of both vintage and modern elegance, Ryan created a showstopper – an oval center stone wrapped in a floral halo – and on her snowy December birthday, he presented the ring on bended knee along the St. Joseph River. With family and friends anxiously watching from a distance, Regan wholeheartedly said, “Yes!” “R & R” envisioned a romantic celebration at the country surroundings of St. Joe Farm. The charm of the property and all its places and spaces provided the perfect location to host a full weekend of events. Once they solidified the venue, they dove into the planning process with the help of family.

FOREVER&R // Featured Wedding

The couple shared, “We have the unique blessing of two amazing women in our family whose talent and expertise in the wedding industry are unmatched. Without the guidance and support from Cup of Lovely and Wygant Floral, as well as our parents, we would have been lost.” The bride’s sister-in-law and event designer at Cup of Lovely, Jamey Harding, helped define the couple’s vision and conceptualized a totally tailored look inspired by their eclectic style. From a customized color palette to dramatic transformation of the event space, Cup of Lovely brought Regan and Ryan’s “romantic garden glamour” fairytale to life.

STUDIO THIS IS

The groom grew up working for his aunt Mary Green’s flower shop, Wygant Floral Co., and it was an honor for the family to provide one-of-a-kind wedding florals. Organic compositions of breathtaking blooms perfectly captured a natural sense of ease and elegance. The bride’s bouquet was one of many exquisite designs that caught everyone’s attention. Regan looked especially stunning in a Stephen Yearick gown, featuring extraordinary fabrication of beading and lace, detachable tulle skirt and cathedral-length veil. The groom looked dashing in a deep navy suit complete with tweed vest and white orchid boutonniere finished with leather cording. Each bridesmaid styled the versatile heather maxi dress in unique fashion. The groom gifted his groomsmen personalized tie bars to wear with heather ties and deep navy suits. The mother-of-the-bride’s gorgeous lace gown perfectly complemented the garden glamour aesthetic, as did the mother-of-the-groom’s full-skirted floral dress. 30

WEDDINGDAY

Many other details reflected a unique sense of artistry. Upon entering the space, a lovely vignette of gilded mirrors provided guests with their seating assignments. The bride’s “found” glass window transformed into a customized photo op, the cake emulated her gown’s lace, and her dear high school friend provided chalk calligraphy throughout the space. Undeniably dramatic, rustic wooden ladders wrapped in undulating greenery and suspended from the barn’s 35-foot cathedral ceiling created the feeling that the garden was floating above the central bridal party tables. Each guest enjoyed a different place setting, featuring a collection of uniquely patterned china, and a delicious chocolate chip cookie freshly baked by the groom’s mother. Ryan explains, “My mom’s cookies have been a part of every chapter of my life, so it was important that they were there as a sweet end to the new beginning of the most important chapter.” Music enhanced the affair with extra magic. A string quartet added soft stylings to the ceremony, the couple’s favorite local talent provided acoustic guitar and vocals during cocktail hour and dinner, and the DJ brought everyone to the dance floor. The father-of-thebride even arranged a surprise tribute following his speech, including family members performing a special rendition of “The Prayer.” Although it rained, nothing dampened the joyful ambiance of the day. Like the light bouncing off Regan’s ring, there was a brilliant sparkle in the couple’s eyes throughout the once-in-alifetime experience. The bride shared, “Just as my parents always hoped, it was the wedding of my dreams. I will never forget the rush of emotion I felt when we stood out on the landing overlooking this gorgeous venue filled with our dearest family and friends. It was incredible, and one of the best moments of my life.”

Come and experience what brides and their families from all over have loved about The Lodge at River Valley Farm. “For the bride who settles for nothing less than spectacular.”

Melody Withers Photography

What was once a real working farm in the 1940’s for descendants of the Ball (yes, Ball jar!) family has been uniquely restored into a private sanctuary to host your dream wedding. Located in quaint Yorktown, Indiana, The Lodge sits on fifty acres surrounded by farm fields and woods, yet just a few miles from bustling Muncie. The property still houses the beautifully restored farmhouse from the 1850’s with all the modern amenities to fit into a busy bride’s day of readiness. Located just a mere sidewalk away is the 5,000-square-foot masterpiece fully enclosed space, The Lodge. Boasting a floor plan complete with a reception area, dance floor with twinkle wrapped post and beams from the original 1850’s barn, window lined dining area with stone covered fireplace and mantle, catering room and indoor restrooms, The Lodge is the ideal space for lasting memories. From the bubbling boulders at the entrance to the majestic cathedral ceilings inside it is sure to be a day you and your guests will always remember.

his WeddingDay Exclusive Style Shoot, hosted by the Lodge at River Valley Farm, is a picturesque shoot that radiates romance, tranquility and charm. Located in the quaint area of Yorktown, Indiana, the Lodge is surrounded by lush woods, rolling pastures and farm fields that go for miles, yet is only a short drive from many restaurants and Interstate 69. Built in 1851, the Lodge's farmhouse was recently refurbished to give the bridal party a perfect place to get ready. Venue Director of the Lodge, Brooke Smith, says that the venue’s unique indoor and outdoor spaces have been refurbished to create a perfect blank slate that any couple will love. She shares, “This is no ordinary space and not for the cookie-cutter bride. Hand-hewn beams from the original barn built in 1850, 10-foot stone fireplace, dedicated bar room, dedicated catering room, hard-wired sound system and beautifully-appointed indoor restrooms round out this unique space for up to 250 of your nearest and dearest!”

WEDDINGDAY 63

Sarah Journay, Owner of Journay and Co., knew she wanted this shoot to revolve around the venue’s natural beauty. “This venue is stunning, and while it offers all the comforts needed for your big day, it also allows creativity to flow,” Sarah explains. “It is a relatively blank slate allowing each bride to style it however they like and truly create a one-of-a-kind vision every time!” The team chose a neutral palette to bring about a classical theme, but really let their creativity shine through the various textures used. The use of soft satin linens and white lace print brings a timelessness to this traditional wedding. A large draw to this venue is the location. Brooke explains, “You get the quietness of being in the country with the convenience of being close to major attractions in Muncie and Anderson, Indiana. A bride won’t have to make her guests drive long distances like many of the other venues in the surrounding area to reach us.” This was ideal for the shoot because it allowed easy travel for vendors in central Indiana. The Lodge itself also provides coordinators to the couple the month of her wedding for a small fee, to make sure everything goes to plan without worry!

ALISON MAE PHOTOGRAPHY

Other touches of the shoot bring together this neutral theme—such as the minimalist stationery created by Noteworthy Expressions. The stunning shots provided by Alison Mae Photography capture memories that will last forever with this timeless look. Sarah notes, “While giving each vendor the color palette and overall vision for the shoot, we like to give full creative freedom in each individual genius. We feel this creates the most authentic work and allows for some of the best overall shoots to be executed.” As a family-owned business, the Lodge at River Valley Farm staff understands how important your big day is to you and your family members. That’s why they are committed to offering any bride the freedom to help accomplish the vision for her wedding. Brooke says, “We want our brides, grooms and families to truly have the experience of a lifetime and create unforgettable memories at the Lodge and we will bend over backward to ensure that happens.” 64

hen searching for that perfect venue in central Indiana, brides have a limitless number of choices. A bright and charismatic space, the Marriott Indianapolis East offers brides the flexibility to shape multiple venue spaces to match the wedding of their dreams. This Indianapolis hotel center boasts five ballrooms and one exhibit hall between two properties, and five hundred guest rooms to help make any couple's wedding dreams a reality.

ABBEY ELAINE PHOTOGRAPHY

The Marriott Indianapolis East is truly a classic all-inclusive venue that takes care of any need, big or small. They provide all tables, chairs, china, glass, silver, linens and basic centerpieces for a hassle-free wedding. Wendy McGinness, Director of Catering Sales for the Marriott Indianapolis East says, “Our ballrooms are all uniquely decorated to fit with any style. We provide all catering with the exception of a cake!” In this WeddingDay Exclusive Style Shoot, Sarah Journay of Journay and Co. aimed to show off the dignified setting of the Marriott East's Delta Property. Captured by Abbey Elaine Photography, this shoot is themed as a classic garden party while adding in a touch of old-world European flair, to bring to life this timeless, yet vintage aura. To provide an added old-world bonus, the shoot took place in the evening. Sarah says, “Being able to utilize candlelight along with many other old, romantic elements made for an extremely fun and exciting experience!” We love how this space takes on a whole new vibe in the evening light! The team wanted to soften the space to bring in delicate, muted tones to pair with the natural hues of the venue. A Classic Party Rental provided the stunning chairs, napkins, crystal glasses, and flatware to create the dreamy tablescapes. A fun addition to the shoot was the outdoor ceremony space with a gentle curl of drapery and boxwood wall backdrop brought to life by Atmospheres and Coby Palmer Designs. The bride's hair and makeup, provided by Leanna’s Private Studio, follows a soft, natural palette that leaves her absolutely glowing. And the transition of her hair from gentle waves to a flawless updo is simply perfect! In addition to the charming décor, a six-foot fireplace mantle, and an exact replica of the Trevi Fountain, The Marriott Indianapolis East is a one-stop-shop for everything a couple needs. Wendy says, “You can host all events in one space from the bridal shower and engagement party to the rehearsal dinner and big day!” Whether your ceremony is big or small, the Marriott Indianapolis East can house each guest comfortably. Complicated rooming situations are a thing of the past with this hotel center! The Marriott Indianapolis East cares for each guest individually by providing discounted guest room blocks for weddings to have all your friends and family under one roof to celebrate to the fullest. The open space of Marriott Indianapolis East will make your wedding a lively one to remember!

COVER SHOOT

SECRET GARDEN IN THE CITY A Detroit Cover Shoot with Bold Blooms & Ed gy Brick

THE VISION We wanted to portray a sense of attitude for our 2019 Issue 4 cover shoot. With the design of a moody Detroit escape in mind, Aimee Paquin, Owner and Lead Designer of Modernly Events, imagined this shoot to be a slightly edgy take on “Secret Garden in the City.” Aimee explains, “I wanted the shoot to feel modern, edgy and a little wild at heart.” We wanted to pair darker colors with a soft traditional look to create an overall refined, dramatic look any bride could use. Aimee notes, “I used a lot of black and white throughout the shoot to allow the venue and the floral design to be the primary focus, as well as keeping the other elements more minimal.”

THE LOCATION Parker's Alley at the Shinola Hotel was the perfect locale of choice for this shoot because it captures the historic value of the area while maintaining the modern vibes of a big city like Detroit. “Since it is truly an alley, we had to contend with box truck deliveries in the alley and pedestrians visiting the shops that line it,” Aimee notes. “It was challenging, but also made the shoot come to life because that’s exactly what being in the city is like.” The alley came ready with a palette the team was excited to work with. The red brick, faded wall signs and black accents naturally in the space provided a perfect industrial color scheme for this modern shoot.

THE FLORALS The florals created by Design Quintessentials brought a burst of color to this striking shoot. Aimee explains, “We used pampas grass in the bouquet and décor to play up the bohemian vibes and used various greenery to give the installations a garden feel. Roses, ranunculus, and stems of berries further contributed to the garden vibe.” The floral wall installation designed by Design Quintessentials showcases blooms reaching toward the sky in a true secret garden fashion.

THE LOOK This bride’s dress is a gem found at Becker’s Bridal Outlet. The bell sleeves and all-over lace provide a soft elegance to contrast with the edginess of the bride’s makeup. The dress perfectly hugs her silhouette and the jacket completes her look with a stylish pop. The team went one step above and beyond and altered the jacket so it could better fit the shoot. “Using calligraphy in unexpected ways continues to be a big trend, so I asked Angela of Plume & Proper to hand-letter the sleeve of a leather jacket,” Aimee explains. “We chose ‘take my hand, take my whole life too’ as a nod to the placement of the calligraphy and as a sweet sentiment on a wedding day.” The bride’s hair and makeup by Kyle Ann Design added to the edginess of the shoot with a styled ponytail and lots of large waves. The hints of gold at the corner of her eyes and her blackburgundy lips tie in the wild side with a sassy snap!

THE DÉCOR This tablescape is a study in contrast with the black and off-white/cream palette. Aimee explains that she wanted the table to have dimension and texture, and used minimal blooms to focus attention on the décor. “I used an ivory velvet tablecloth from Event Source and layered in matte black, smoke gray, off-white and gold pieces for the place settings,” Aimee says. “Each place setting consisted of a matte black charger, bone coupe dinner and salad plates, and a textured ivory linen napkin. From Event Source, I chose an ivory velvet tablecloth to be the base of the tablescape design.” From the simple touches of gold down to the tassels at each plate, this team paid attention to every detail and made it unique. The stationery, created by Invitations by Caitlin, took inspiration from moody florals and designs with bold fonts. The end products perfectly balance feminine florals with a bold, masculine font.

THE CAKE & DESSERTS

MODEL

Ashley Dulce, owner of The DULCE Experience, certainly gave this shoot a one-of-a-kind addition! Our mouths are watering at the gentle brush of color used on this three-tiered masterpiece. Aimee explains, “The abstract and painterly cake design played off the alley murals. We wanted it to feel like a continuation of those walls.” As if this artful cake wasn't enough, Ashley created individual crème brulee cups to form a small dessert display ready for any guest to enjoy. The cake and desserts were placed on clear acrylic pedestals to let the murals be seen behind them, and to give the illusion the cake was floating on air!
