FROM THE EDITOR “Winter is an etching, spring is a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn is a mosaic of them all.” -Stanley Horowitz An Internet search of this lovely poem returns over 1,600,000 results, and according to the New York Public Library’s website, has been referenced in many ways, from grief counseling to public parks, politics to a Philippine newspaper. His words are obviously quite inspirational! Well, I’m not sure if I’m the first to use his poem in reference to wedding planning, but here you go! The beauty of the seasons, as Horowitz describes, is visually narrated throughout much of this issue! As they say, there’s something for everyone, in whichever season you choose for your own wedding. PATRICIA & DUANE GILLENWATER
Like our favorite 90s romantic comedies, a homecoming dance sealed the deal for Duane and Patty Gillenwater. They first met in high school and after growing up together, they each attended their own colleges and pursued their own career paths. As high school sweethearts, Duane and Patty overcame the odds and got engaged after eight years of dating.

WEDDINGDAY
a midsummer night’s dream A MAGICAL GARDEN WEDDING
THE PROPOSAL Patty flew to New York City for a work-related trip and had planned to be there for a week. She hoped to do some sight seeing while there so she decided to fly in a day early. After meandering around Central Park, Patty returned to her hotel room when she got a phone call from the front desk informing her that she had a package downstairs. Patty’s initial thought was that her office had sent her a fruit basket. She took the elevator downstairs and when the doors opened to the lobby, she found Duane standing there with roses (not a fruit basket). He got down on one knee, proposed and then spent the week in the city with Patty.

IVAN & LOUISE
THE PLANNING Patty is a designer, so visuals and creativity are a part of everything she does. Sometimes, she says, that makes her get fixated on perfection. She knew her wedding would be one of those things. The couple originally wanted a late spring/early summer wedding, but after they had difficulty finding a church and venue that had the same date open, they pushed the wedding back to Labor Day weekend. Patty knew she wanted a magical garden atmosphere with whichever venue she chose, but also wanted to incorporate the Indianapolis city life. With that in mind, her and Duane set out to find a site that would match their vision. 12
WEDDINGDAY
THE VENUE Duane and Patty’s venue criteria included seating capacity for 300 guests, a downtown location, and indoor/outdoor space. With those requirements, it was a bit of a challenge to find a venue that met the criteria and also provided the space to create the urban garden vibe Patty wanted. The couple’s venue search led them to Regions Tower and Rooftop Terrace in downtown Indianapolis where they were immediately attracted to the cityscape views, natural light, affordability and the staff.
THE DÉCOR Patty was inspired by Shakespeare’s play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and...moss. “I was obsessed with moss,” says Patty. “I wanted it everywhere!” To create the urban garden feel, they wanted to bring the outdoors in with loose, romantic foliages, florals and mosses. Color choices included gold accents and ivory with soft blush. “I wanted all my bright color to be my floral,” Patty explains. “I wanted the floral to POP and make the room glow.” Duane and Patty’s head table featured a long wooden table with garland flowing down the center with candlesticks and blooms woven throughout beneath a gorgeous suspended floral piece. Meanwhile, the escort table was moss covered with a tree “growing” through the center with hanging candles.
Because of Patty’s designer background and creative mind, there were a lot of D.I.Y. projects in her wedding. She placed large, homegrown succulents throughout the reception and hand drew/painted all of the reception signage. She also painted the gold script table numbers on mirrored round plates for the guest tables. The stationery including the programs, menu cards and escort cards were all designed by Patty. On top of that, she created golden, moss tea light trees for the bar area and filled the bottom of glass cylinders with moss to accent the candles in the centerpieces of the guest tables.
WEDDINGDAY 13
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM // Featured Wedding
THE FLORAL Upon recommendation, Patty connected with Autumn Keller from Isibeal Studio who took her vision and ran with it. Autumn created a botanical palette with greenery galore and soft blooms in whites, nudes, gold, blush, berry and coral. Patty says she was after a nature-inspired, yet elegant look with her flowers. Her florist used hops, Sweet Autumn clematis vines, Italian ruscus, various eucalyptus, fresh bay, native branches, maidenhair and plumosa fern. Florals included blossoms of Coral Charm peonies, Romantik Antike roses, White O’Hara, Patience, Polo and Sahara roses, and Mettalina. Other seasonal flowers made appearances as accents in berry and coral tones.

WHAT WE
love
Patty decided to create a “Let Love Grow” theme and gave little homegrown succulents with thank you tags for the guest favors. Between Patty and her family, they grew over 300 succulents!
THE DRESS Patty wore an Enzoani Bridal gown, purchased from Bridal and Formal in Cincinnati, Ohio. She knew she wanted something with lace, ivory tones and an illusion top. She also wanted a high neckline with lace. When she tried on the Enzoani gown, both her and her mom and sister were in agreement: it was the one. “It fit me like a dream, hitting my waist at the perfect spot. It was definitely everything I wanted,” says Patty. 14

HOW TO THROW THE ultimate BACHELORETTE PARTY
by Jenna Nelson
Bachelorette parties have evolved considerably in recent years—especially when it comes to stereotypes. The bachelor party used to be referred to as a “stag party,” while the bachelorette party was called a “hen party.” But gone are the traditions of commemorating one last night of singleness with copious amounts of alcohol, a venue with poles, and ridiculous games that make me blush just thinking about them. A bachelorette party is really a rite of passage, but for some who envision selling sucker bouquets, doing 1-2-3 tequila shots and wearing flashing LED light tiaras, it can become a night to endure rather than to enjoy. Many brides have opted out of having a bachelorette party altogether in order to avoid the “guess who bought the lingerie” game or the drink-til-we-drop tradition. But as more and more brides deviate from wedding traditions and instead embrace personalization throughout their wedding, we
18
WEDDINGDAY
see the same shift with bachelorette parties. More and more brides are looking for ways to bond with their best girls by planning engaging and memorable activities. And while alcohol can certainly be involved, it doesn't have to be the main event. There are plenty of opportunities to indulge in a few refreshing takes on bachelorette parties. Our collection of ideas are guaranteed to make it a night to remember and for your whole group to own that whole #squadgoals thing. Maids of honor, take note! First things first, a great night out requires great hair. That's non-negotiable—trust me, your Instagram feed will appreciate it. Getting a blowout for the night out is our favorite way to get glammed up for girls' night. Most salons have blowout services, but there are even blowdry bars that specialize in pampering ladies for a night out. Plan to spend about $30 to $50 on a blowout. You can also get your makeup done here. We recommend requesting contoured makeup (because who can possibly figure that out on their own?!) and adding some fake eyelashes for a nighttime look.
SIGN UP FOR A FOOD TOUR
Kristen Mittlestedt Photography
Next, an itinerary is essential to the bachelorette party. Now if your group and the bride are up for crazy scavenger hunts, taking shots and dancing, go for it! But if you're looking to plan something a little out of the ordinary, consider one of these ideas:
You can sign up for a food tour or even create your own! The concept is that you visit a few dining establishments in one night tasting different things on the menu. It works best if you choose restaurants that are in close proximity to one another. Don't forget to eat light at each place—it's a marathon, not a sprint.
You know how to drink 'em, but do you know the actual craftsmanship that goes into mixing a cocktail? Sign up for a class in your area and learn how to make your own signature drink. You can even make a competition out of it by creating a contest to see who makes the best cocktail—this is education at its finest.
Gem Photography
ATTEND A MIXOLOGY CLASS
TAKE A DANCE LESSON
Obviously, this classic bachelorette event had to make our list. Taking a seductive dance lesson is designed to be more empowering and entertaining than it is risqué and sexy. You can find classes that offer private group lessons in pole dancing, salsa, hip hop or burlesque.
GO ON A PEDAL PUB
Hopefully you have experienced the wonder that is the pedal pub by now. Pedal pubs are crowd-size bicycles that are built to move about cities while the cyclists drink and bar hop. It's the perfect way to burn off those beer calories.
BUY TICKETS TO A COMEDY SHOW
If the bride doesn't necessarily enjoy being the center of attention, attend a comedy show where all eyes are on the stage. It's a great way to entertain the girls without the responsibility of being the entertainer!
THROW A SPA PARTY
SIGN UP FOR A PAINT AND DRINK EVENT
Paintbrush in one hand and cocktail in the other—it's the ideal recipe for a laid-back girls' night that incorporates both activity and social drinking. Most painting party facilities accommodate for private parties so you and the ladies can have a room and instructor to yourselves! Plus, you get to choose the canvas you'd like to paint so everyone walks away with a memorable keepsake of your night.
Amanda Fales Photography
Most bachelorette parties are about a girls' night out, but don't overlook throwing a girls' night in. Stock up on wine and appetizers and hire spa professionals to come to your door. These spa professionals come equipped with pampering products, bath robes, music and all the other spa essentials. Several services are available from pedicures to makeovers to massages to facials. You can also save a little money by throwing a D.I.Y. spa party.

Jodi Bodtke of Giving Tree Photography was stirred by visions of an earthy, nautical wedding. The colors, flowers, décor and overall theme of this style shoot were inspired by a small town near the marina and by the beach glass that is commonly found buried in the Lake Michigan shoreline. She collaborated with Marco Alexzondra of Marco Alexzondra Floral and Event Services, and together with the addition of several other vendors, they designed a stylized wedding that made use of pale blue, green and brown tones, succulents, driftwood, beach glass and heart-shaped rocks. The marina at Harbor Grand in New Buffalo, Michigan provided a gorgeous backdrop with sailboats, a willow tree and Michigan blue waters.

The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.
1. GET THE ORIGINAL
3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE
5. UPDATE YOUR BANK
Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.
The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.
2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL
4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME
6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME
If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.
When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.
MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

Rustic & Romantic 10 VINEYARDS FOR YOUR WEDDING
Rustic wedding spaces continue to be in high demand and while barns have lingered in the spotlight, more and more brides are looking for that perfect rural space for their outdoor wedding. Most barns offer acres of picturesque scenery for outdoor events, but there is also something exceptionally romantic about saying “I do surrounded by sprawling vineyards. After all, a bottle of wine is the official emblem of romance, isn't it?

VENUES WE LOVE
Couples may have their hearts set on an outdoor affair with perhaps a rural feel, but shy away from hosting at a barn venue. Vineyard weddings are the solution for those who are after that rustic vibe, but are looking for something a little different beyond barns. And like we have seen with barn weddings, vineyards can be transformed into whatever style the couple is after—from laid back and casual to Napa Valleylike and luxurious. Have we talked about the wine yet? Wine is a classic fundamental in almost every wedding, but drinking it at the vineyard where its grapes were grown creates an experience in a glass. Couples can create the ultimate experience by incorporating a wine tasting for guests during social hour and serving light bites for food and wine pairings. Many venues allow guests to stroll through the vineyards and even offer vineyard tours as part of the wedding package.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind Consider the season of your wedding. Depending on the region, early summer may be the season for greenery and grapes while autumn produces those beautiful fall colors on the vines. Also, be aware of planning your wedding during harvest season. Many wineries or vineyard venues carry a license to serve wine and beer only—not liquor.
46
WEDDINGDAY
Hosting an outdoor wedding comes with responsibilities. You should plan on extra expenses like microphones, linens, chair and table rentals, sound equipment, etc. Many of these places are open to the public. Find out from the venue if the entire facility and grounds can be rented privately. Otherwise your intimate vineyard wedding will be a little less intimate!
Don't forget to let guests know how to dress for this kind of wedding. In other words, they are not high heel-friendly. It will greatly benefit you to find vendors that have either worked with the vineyard before or have experience with vineyard weddings.
Provide transportation if the ceremony is offsite or if the hotel is not nearby. These venues are often far out into the country, making it difficult for guests to find. If you're hosting at a vineyard (not a winery), find out what the restroom accommodations are. You may need to rent portable bathrooms.
Indiana ELK RIDGE VINEYARDS AND LAVENDER FARM There are plenty of options for hosting your wedding at Elk Ridge. The venue has indoor options like a banquet hall that can hold up to 120 guests or a covered deck that can hold 50. FEATURED WEDDING
August 29, 2015 INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA PHOTOGRAPHED BY ANGEL CANARY PHOTOGRAPHY
MARINA & DAVID PIECHOCKI
Marina Grishin first took notice of David Piechocki at work when he gave an Elvis performance during a work function. His performance opened the door to a friendship and later, led to a first date. David, meanwhile, had his eye on Marina from the first day she started work. From joining the bowling team to attending a Pilates class, David did everything he could to get a moment with her. Marina says she knew David was the one for her when he agreed to join her on her 14-day trip to Europe—she asked him during their very first lunch together. “I wanted to see how spontaneous he was!” says Marina. “He did not disappoint and booked his trip immediately. We have been inseparable ever since.” 54

THE PROPOSAL Two years after the Elvis incident, David and Marina planned another trip. This time it was to Arizona, Nevada and California. During the trip, David proposed to Marina in a secluded alcove at the Grand Canyon.

THE PLANNING Although David and Marina originally planned to spend a few months basking in the post-engagement bliss, they quickly realized that they had to secure a date and a venue right away. After touring several venues, they found themselves at The Alexander Hotel in downtown Indianapolis. Marina says they fell in love with both the venue and the venue’s wedding coordinator. In fact, it was their coordinator who led them to several of their other vendors like Detail+Design floral, Angel Canary Photography and Classic Cakes. From that point on, the couple worked side by side with the planner and kept
56
WEDDINGDAY
resources like Pinterest, online planning tools and Google Drive close at hand. “I was concerned that the planning process would cause some strain, particularly since we opted to do everything ourselves,” says David. “However, as long as we kept communicating and ensured that we both participated in decision making, the work never felt overwhelming and the end result truly felt like we had both contributed equally. I’m not going to sugar coat it though; choosing invitation colors, while important, is just as riveting as it sounds.”
SPECIAL TOUCHES It was important to the couple to incorporate both of their cultures into the wedding. Marina’s family immigrated from Belarus to Indianapolis when Marina was two. They included a Rabbi, a Russian/American band and wedding programs that reflected the couple’s personality and cultural traditions. David and Marina also created a welcome newsletter and goodie bag for guests, the programs, reception itinerary, and a hangover kit for their guests who enjoyed the dance floor—perhaps a bit too much! The goal for their wedding was to entertain their guests, but to stay true to their cultures and personal tastes.
THE VENUE WHAT WE
David and Marina were drawn to The Alexander Hotel because of its unique and modern style. “We fell in love with the artwork and loved the fact that it was the only Indiana hotel that was also a museum,” says Marina. “We were inviting a lot of out-of-town guests and wanted them to see the hotel and get this experience.” She says they were also impressed with the customer service and attentiveness of the staff, especially their coordinator.

Marina’s sister-in-law choreographed the wedding party flash mob!
THE DRESS Marina’s gown was a match made in heaven (a.k.a. Nancy’s Bridal Boutique in Indianapolis). She paired a Watters Carina corset with a Watters Ahsan skirt to create a modern-yet-romantic look that would match the style of the wedding. Marina actually found “the dress” when she went in for alterations for her sisterin-law’s wedding. The rose gold dress was hanging on a mannequin in the store. “I immediately turned to {my sister-in-law} and said ‘that’s my dress!’” says Marina. She loved the rose gold color, but wanted to wear white on her wedding day, so she purchased the gown in white but added accents of rose gold to the lining of the corset.
WEDDINGDAY 57
THE DÉCOR Drawing inspiration from The Alexander’s artistic interior, Marina chose a color scheme that not only matched the venue, but created an inviting, dramatic and contemporary atmosphere. The venue provided the soft lavender lighting throughout the reception. The reception featured three different tablescape looks. The centerpieces were based on a contemporary, organic design that complemented the hotel setting. The taller centerpieces offered white branches with free flowing, romantic floral paired with dangling candles. Teardrop vases with pink floral accents were added. The second table design was made with low gold boxes with small vases. Each vase contained flowers and had hidden candles for accent lighting. The third design was a low square vase filled with flowers and surrounded by three high vases with floating candles.
ANGEL CANARY PHOTOGRAPHY
THE FLORAL Detail+Design created the bride’s bouquet to be loose and flowing with crème, lavender, light pink and soft white tones. The look was a romantic teardrop style sprinkled with touches of frosted blue gray greenery. Hydrangeas, white peonies, ivory roses, soft lavender roses and light pink spray roses completed the organic look. All of the reception tables used a mixture of hydrangeas, roses, lisianthus, seeded eucalyptus and seasonal floral surrounded by votive candles to get the design Marina aimed for.

THE VISION Creating a modern-yet-elegant stylized wedding was the objective of this cover shoot, held at Le Meridien in downtown Indianapolis. Brooke Tichenor, the planner at savoir faire events, was tasked with pulling together a cover shoot that leaned toward contemporary styles while maintaining a classic and sophisticated feel. The venue was the first component Brooke secured and the boutique hotel set the tone for the remaining details including the autumn-colored shades that were used throughout.

THE VENUE Words like “metropolitan” and “chic” were swirling around in the minds of the vendors, and they knew Le Meridien would provide the desired atmosphere. “As soon as you walk into Le Meridien, you quickly notice its chic and modern style, and you instantly feel as if you are in a truly metropolitan venue—starting with the lobby with its unique gold arch, to the sitting area filled with gold décor, beautiful artwork, white brick walls, vibrant colors, and mid-century furniture,” says Brooke.
THE FLORAL Adapting to the autumn theme, florist Cathy Simmons of cs accoutrements brought in luscious tones of deep reds and bronzes, as well as accents of green, purple, burgundy and amber. She fused different textures in the arrangements including Black Pearl roses, Coffee Break roses and leucadendron in the bridal bouquet. Meanwhile, the ceremony and reception pieces included similar pieces with the addition of hydrangeas, bronze upright and red hanging amaranthus, snapdragons, mini calla lilies, purple panda orchids and royal purple cotinus leaves. These color tones paired with the variety of floral matched the rich accents throughout Le Meridien.

THE DÉCOR The autumn-inspired colors were offset by peacock blue linens and napkins for the tablescape from LGi Linens. Tableware and decorative pieces from Z Gallerie completed the table settings with silver and glass chargers, plates and stemware, and geode napkins rings. The vendor team wanted to play off the mixed metals throughout the hotel with the decorative details in this shoot. A magazine-worthy spread of hors d’oeuvres and charcuterie boards were provided by Spoke & Steele, accompanied by a display of designer desserts by Circle City Sweets. Z Gallerie provided gold-rimmed cake stands, gold and white votives, and tall candle holders for the table.
WEDDINGDAY 69
THE HAIR & MAKEUP Karen Hall & Co. in Fishers, Indiana provided the makeup products, application and hair styling for the model. The updo hairstyle was inspired by the 1940s era and was paired with soft, neutral makeup. Wispy lashes, a cherry blossom lip, and an airbrush opaque finish completed the exquisite wedding day look.

THE STATIONERY The stationery suite, designed by Blu3 Designs, borrowed creative inspiration from the marble and gold features throughout the venue. The marble-inspired stationery featured gold lettering, and the marble theme continued with actual stone and gold lettering for the escort cards, table numbers and decorative signage.
THE DRESS The model donned a fitted, silk gown with lace sleeves and a barely-there train from LUXEredux Bridal.
