WEDDINGDAY WEDDING DAY 3

FROM THE EDITOR As I was reviewing all of the beautiful wedding photo submissions from our recent “Best of Wedding Photography” Facebook contest, it affirmed to me the dramatic changes that have taken place in wedding photography over the years. It is clearly now considered a dramatic art form vs. the posed shots of wedding parties of the past. I was amazed by the beauty of each work, and am thankful that the decision was not ours this time in choosing the winner! As we prepare this issue of WeddingDay, we are also preparing for another season of new brides embarking on their own wedding planning! As with the many brides of the past who have relied on WeddingDay in print, online and social, we hope you too will visit us frequently for inspiration, advice, and access to the very best vendors. Best wishes,

FEATURED WEDDING

KALEIGH & KEVIN HUTCHISON

Kevin and Kaleigh met at work. When Kaleigh first started, she had to report to Kevin on a few of their client accounts. Although she wouldn’t necessarily call him her boss, it certainly does make for a good story!

THE PROPOSAL

inspired affair AT THE CRANE BAY

Kevin proposed while the couple was visiting Paris, and no, he did not propose in front of the Eiffel Tower or on top of the Eiffel Tower. He waited until Kaleigh was caught off guard in her pajamas and wearing a top knot bun on the balcony of their hotel room. Kevin had been carrying around the ring for four days waiting for the right moment, but decided he couldn’t wait another day!

A KATE SPADE-INSPIRED AFFAIR // Featured Wedding

THE DRESS “Can’t I just live in it for the rest of my life?” That was the question posed by Kaleigh after she found her one-in-a-million gown at Marie Gabriel Couture in Indianapolis. Kaleigh wore a Monique Lhuillier dress with added-on custom straps which were sewn by a seamstress at the bridal salon.

THE PLANNING Kevin and Kaleigh started planning by hiring Lori Solomon, wedding planner and owner of Boldly Chic Events. Kaleigh knew she wanted to stay far away from the “country chic” vibe and she was over the blush trend. It was important to her to fuse both her and Kevin’s personalities into the details and since they are both outgoing and vibrant, it made sense to create that type of wedding. And that’s where designer Kate Spade stepped in. Kaleigh was attracted to the girly and modern-yet-classic attributes of her designs. Kate Spade’s designs combined with the planner’s creativity produced the dream wedding Kaleigh had envisioned. 12

WEDDINGDAY

THE VENUE The couple chose The Crane Bay Event Center in Indianapolis for their reception venue. It radiates an edgy, urban vibe which is exactly what Kaleigh had in mind. They were also intrigued by the outdoor patio area with views of downtown Indianapolis and the Lucas Oil Stadium. “I wanted an outside element without being outside in the event the weather didn’t compromise,” says Kaleigh. “This was a perfect balance!” It was important to the couple to have the ceremony and reception in one location to ease the stress of getting from one place to another for their guests.

THE DÉCOR Fuchsia and navy set the tone for the reception décor. Kaleigh has always appreciated the way Kate Spade pairs bright and unique colors together, and since Kaleigh loves the color hot pink, that was an obvious choice. Kevin on the other hand, had his heart set on wearing a navy tux. The unlikely color pairing effortlessly came to life with navy-striped tablecloths, fuchsia napkins and mixed gold centerpieces and plate chargers. Pink uplighting made the occasion all the more dramatic.

WEDDINGDAY 13

THE FLORAL Sweet Pea Floral Design designed arrangements that reflected the couple’s desire for vibrant colors using garden roses, peonies, ranunculus, anemones, camellia and hydrangeas. The bouquets were kept simple and white, while reception florals contrasted luscious pinks against the navy linens.

SPECIAL TOUCHES Kevin and Kaleigh wanted to create an experience for their guests. “We wanted them to look at the different elements and aspects of our day and think, ‘this is so Kevin and Kaleigh’ in subtle ways,” says Kaleigh. They offered late night s’mores, a caricature artist, a cigar bar, a photo booth, and a kids’ table at their reception. Beyond that, Kevin’s friends over at Redemption Aleworks brewed a specialty craft beer just for their big day! Meanwhile, Kaleigh had her own signature cocktail at the wedding, called “The Blushing Bride.”

WHAT WE

love

Kate Spade, obviously! Any time a bride looks to our favorite designer for inspiration, we have high hopes for the wedding. We loved that Kate Spade influenced Kaleigh and yet she stayed true to the details that represented her and Kevin.

AND PREDICT WHAT'S TO COME IN 2017

WHAT TREND DID YOU LOVE MOST IN 2016? The Jon Har tm

“One of the 2016 trends that I really love is metallic color palettes and mixing metals. It used to be that you chose one metal accent...gold or silver. Now there are more options.... rose gold, copper, bronze....and you don't have to choose just one, you can mix and match with a stunning effect.”

“We have seen all those great black chalkboard signs with white lettering that brides DIY or have custom made. These signs are here to stay however, my prediction for 2017 is that we will see more brides think outside the box by creating custom signage made on backgrounds of varying colors and materials such as wood and plexiglass. These new choices will compliment the modern and urban vibe that brides are striving to create.”

“I am loving the personal touches couples are getting excited about. Gone is the “common” look, schedule or structure of every wedding. Couples are finding ways to incorporate their personality on every front of their wedding—starting as early as their social media engagement announcements. We saw such a movement in popular trends that we saw repeated over and over in 2014 and 2015. Couples are now taking those basic ideas and running with them. It's so refreshing!”

WHAT TREND DO YOU PREDICT FOR 2017? “I think we are going to see less color palettes and more overall 'looks' and 'feels.' I don't think brides are going to rely on a certain color combination but will find more inspiration in looks, ambiance and concepts. I'm excited to see “blush and gold” become more “romantic and organic.” It started with moving away from matching bridesmaids dresses. I'm confident it's going to overflow into all design aspects of wedding planning.”

Where in the world should you get married? Just because you want a destination wedding, doesn't mean you're destined for the tropics or the Mexican border. From the sun-kissed shores of Lake Michigan to the coasts of the Carolinas and from mountains to rainforests, your destination wedding possibilities and places are as infinite as oceans. There's a reason why fairytales start with "in a land far, far away" and end with "happily ever after."

THE EASIEST GUIDE TO changing your last name

AFTER THE WEDDING

Y

our newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.

1. GET THE ORIGINAL

3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE

5. UPDATE YOUR BANK

Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.

The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.

2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL

4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME

6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME

If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.

When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.

MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

WHEN BETHANY TIBBLE, OWNER OF BETH JOY PHOTOGRAPHY AND RICHELLE STEWART, OWNER OF POTS FLORAL PUT THEIR HEADS TOGETHER TO DESIGN A STYLE SHOOT, THEY HAD HOPED TO DELIVER A LITTLE BOHEMIAN INSPIRATION TO BRIDES PLANNING A LOCAL MIDWEST WEDDING. WHAT THEY ENDED UP WITH WAS GORGEOUS COLLISION OF RUSTIC AND LUXURY WITH HANDCRAFTED DETAILS BY LOCAL ARTISANS. Bethany says they envisioned an intimate wedding or even an elopement in the quiet countryside where a couple could celebrate with a relaxed-yet-chic affair. “This look is perfect for a bride who wants a backyard bash, both wild and rustic, but also contrasted with some luxe details,” says Bethany. 44

WEDDINGDAY

THE LOCATION As the details of the shoot fell into place, Bethany thought of the most fitting location: her parents' land filled with meadows, sprawling fields, a huge oak tree; it had all of the essentials of a Midwest countryside.

THE COLOR PALETTE Given the natural but lush surroundings, the team chose a neutral palette with accents of merlot, gold, blush and greenery. Since the scene was set in late autumn/early winter, the deep reds from the floral, fruits, paper goods and bride's shawl pulled the details together.

BETH JOY PHOTOGRAPHY

WEDDINGDAY 45

THE SWEETS & TREATS Bethany and Richelle (women who clearly have many talents!) designed, baked and created the fruit-covered naked cake themselves. Mini cupcakes from Jefferson Market and frosted cranberries were added to dress up the vintage dessert table.

THE FLORAL Richelle of Pots Floral in Detroit was the other “dreamer” in this style shoot and her flower details are what took this entire concept to another level. The bouquet was arranged with peonies, cabbage roses, anemone, snapdragon, carnations, eucalyptus, amaranthus, proteas and an artichoke! The tablescape went from vision to execution with greenery, pears, pomegranates and frosted cranberries. Bethany and Richelle loved the idea of using edible fruit as part of the décor concept. Even the bride wore a string of cranberries in her floral crown which was intended to provide a pop of color and a subtle welcome to winter.

THE DÉCOR The decorative touches were simplistic in nature, yet added such vibrancy and beauty throughout the shoot, thanks to rentals from Meadow & Moss and A Touch of Whimsy Events. The scene was set to depict a picnic-style spread complete with a D.I.Y. pallet table set for dinner. The boho vibe was strong with a teepee covered in ethereal drapery and vintage rugs for cozy cuddling, in addition to the tree swing which added an element of fun.

46

WEDDINGDAY

THE PAPER GOODS Paper and Honey created the stationery to reflect the bohemian energy. Owner Laura created a rough-edge invitation suite designed to match the hand-designed paper, designed by Brittany of Two if By Sea Studios. Laura's chic calligraphy graced the paper goods with a romantic touch.

BETH JOY PHOTOGRAPHY

THE DRESS(ES) The bride and groom used in the shoot are actually married and when the vendors saw the bride's J. Crew gown, they decided to use it as the main dress in the shoot. But since life is really just too short to only wear one wedding dress, they selected a second option! The vintage gown was borrowed from The Brides Project, an organization and bridal boutique that donates 100 percent of their proceeds to the Cancer Support Center in Ann Arbor.

THE VENDORS SAY “We put our own unique spin on the 'bohemian style' and hope that this shoot will provide brides with a chance to see intimate weddings in a new perspective, especially for those living in places where beaches and deserts are replaced with meadows and forests!

THE VISION With rustic and vintage vibes making a bold comeback a few years ago, their continued popularity has proven that these wedding styles are more substantial than fleeting trends. But modern-styled weddings are proving that the contemporary look is also in right now—literally. Modernized weddings are all about what’s hot right now; the sharp lines, bold color contrasts, up-lighting and lots of white space. A group of Indianapolis-based vendors embarked on a mission to collaborate on an ultra-chic, modernized wedding at one of downtown Indianapolis’ hottest wedding venues. The end result had us thinking one thing: modern. weddings. for. the. win.

FEATURED WEDDING

August 22, 2015 INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA PHOTOGRAPHED BY CONFORTI PHOTOGRAPHY

BLAKE & JOHN WHITE

John and Blake White met through mutual friends at Indiana University in Bloomington. After dating for four years, John put a proposal plan in motion. He started out by taking Blake to dinner at the restaurant where they had their very first date. After dinner, he blindfolded her and drove her to her family farm where he led her down a path in the woods. When John took her blindfold off, Blake found herself standing in the middle of a candlelit path, surrounded by their closest friends and dog. Their friends were holding up large signs that said “Will you marry me?” 54

WEDDINGDAY

a ruby red occasion A REAL WEDDING DESIGNED FROM A WEDDING RING

THE PLANNING Blake hoped to find the venue before making any other decisions regarding the wedding. She felt that the room would inspire the colors, décor and theme of the wedding. With numerous ideas swirling around in her head, Blake enlisted the resources of wedding planner Sarah Keeker of Plum & Poppy Weddings. “Sarah, our wedding planner, was pretty much our only resource,” says Blake. “We couldn’t have asked for anyone better. We trusted her completely!”

THE DRESS Like most girls, Blake knew exactly what she wanted before she started dress shopping. “I wanted a strapless dress, lace top and tulle bottom...very romantic,” says Blake. Blake and her mom went to Marie Gabriel Couture in Indianapolis. Her mom was insistent that Blake try on a particular dress that looked nothing like what Blake had envisioned. To appease her mom, Blake tried it on even though she didn’t like how it looked on the hanger. It was the one. It was a Raimon Bundó gown and Blake had to have it. “It was classic, elegant, and I knew I had to get married in it!” she says.

WHAT WE

love

The color pairing of gold and ruby was especially pretty, but even more so since rubies had a special place in Blake’s heart. According to Blake, it made the day all the more meaningful.

THE VENUE After their engagement, John and Blake took a trip to Europe before digging into the planning. They toured several European buildings and churches and from that point on, Blake had her heart set on a European-like venue—a challenging search in Indiana! The Scottish Rite Cathedral in Indianapolis was the closest building that the couple could find in terms of architecture and atmosphere. Blake says she loved the dark colors of the inside and the majestic outside was everything she had imagined. 56

WEDDINGDAY

CONFORTI PHOTOGRAPHY

THE DÉCOR Blake was incredibly close with her grandmother who had passed a few years ago. Her grandmother handed down rubies to Blake from one of her old rings. Those rubies were used to make up Blake’s ring set. Blake says the rubies inspired the color and décor concept for the wedding. The gold and deep reds paired perfectly with the venue’s rich interior. Centerpieces of varying heights graced the tablescapes along with gold chargers, votives and gold-framed table numbers. The four-tiered cake by Classic Cakes served as another grand focal point to the room with two gold layers adorned with deep red flowers as a topper.

WEDDINGDAY 57

ADVICE FROM THE bride

“Don’t stress over the small stuff! If you can, hire someone or ask a friend that is not in your wedding to be in charge of ‘day-of’ tasks.”

THE FLORAL Accent Floral Design designed a floral concept that pulled in tones from the venue’s interior and shades of deep reds as a nod to the rubies in Blake’s ring. Lighter pinks and blushes were subtly added for dimension. The arrangements used pale pink peonies, white garden roses, burgundy and blush Dahlias, plum-tone ranunculus, shades of red roses, hydrangeas, Dusty Miller and more.

WHY LOSING WEIGHT IS MORE

MENTAL

THAN PHYSICAL WRITTEN BY COLLIN CHRISTINE

Ever found yourself thinking, “I’ve been on a diet for two weeks and all I lost was two weeks”? How about hating yo-yo dieting? Working hard to cut calories just to find yourself over indulging and gaining back all the weight you lost? This is something that all brides-to-be battle with while trying to lose for their wedding day. I have the answer. It’s no secret, but it requires a little self-care and mindfulness.

62

I was always fighting to be a particular weight or to look a certain way. My eating habits were inconsistent, and so were my weight, energy levels and self-esteem. I could feel very happy about my weight one week and the next, I would have poor body image. After years of unhealthy eating habits, my body didn’t take it so well anymore. I got to a place where I had no energy and felt unhappy with my choices. I knew I needed a change. I began to re-educate myself about my health from a more holistic perspective. I moved away from using food as a way to control how my body looked and moved toward using food as a way to heal my body of illness.

Has there been a time when you felt guilty for reaching for second helpings of a delicious dish or dessert while justifying it with something along the lines of, “It’s okay, I’m just going to go on a diet/detox after this so I will be ready for my big day”? Or maybe this sounds familiar: You find yourself eating really healthy for one week, then the minute you cave in and eat something unhealthy, your eating habits suddenly take a turn for the worst.

“I moved away from using food as a way to control how my body looked and moved toward using food as a way to heal my body of illness.”

You might find that you’re extremely hard on yourself when you don’t feel comfortable in clothes you want to wear and suddenly regret all the unhealthy food choices you’ve made the past few months after indulging in the sweet treats you wanted. You’re not alone. All brides I have worked with have experienced all of these scenarios. I used to yo-yo diet for years, and I would cycle through super healthy or restrictive eating plans one week, to eat-whatever-you-like the next week. I wasn’t aware what I was doing wasn’t helping me. I thought I was doing the right thing.

By embracing mindfulness with my eating, I began to notice which foods my body rejected and which fueled my body. Paying attention to these details made me very aware of how my eating habits affected my mindset. I noticed that when I paid attention to how the types of foods changed not only my mood but how I physically felt changed. I redefined what being healthy meant for me. On reflection, these are the steps I took to redefine my health and finally be free of yo-yo dieting and controlling eating behavior.

WEDDINGDAY

TUNE IN TO WHAT TRULY MOTIVATES YOU For a lot of people, the initial reason to diet is to be thinner; however, this motivation is not always enough when more important things take priority in life, such as having energy to go about your day, building a career and being present for your family. When my low energy levels started to affect my social life and college life, my motivation shifted and accelerated because attention was now drawn to one of my highest values: my health. I realized that striving to be healthy just so I could be thin was not helping me in the long run if my body was suffering. To be truly committed to creating a healthy lifestyle, you need to be driven by something of high value to you, across all areas of your life, such as your health and vitality (what keeps you alive and thriving so you have the energy to be with your friends and family, excel in your career, to travel or do whatever it is that makes you happiest). Use this driving factor to remind yourself why you need to be healthy to live a fulfilling life now. Don’t wait till you’re burnt out and sick to value your health.

CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON WHAT IT MEANS TO BE HEALTHY Eating healthy doesn’t need a label like vegetarian or vegan, and it doesn’t require counting carbs. When I changed my perspective on health, I also realized some of my old beliefs about health were not helping me. I used to believe that being healthy meant only eating foods with fat-free labels; consuming just under daily calorie requirements; and avoiding avocados, nuts or any foods naturally high in fat. I learned to look at the beliefs that led me believe these ideas. I also learned I had to let go of these old beliefs that held me back and create new ones that brought me toward a lifestyle where I felt the energy and vitality to do the things I loved. My beliefs to this day include eating whole foods as much as possible, making healthy snacks, listening to when my body is truly hungry —not just emotionally hungry— and letting my body judge food intake rather than counting calories.

TO DO THIS, START WITH THE BEHAVIOR YOU SEE ON THE SURFACE, SUCH AS RESTRICTING CALORIES, AND ASK YOURSELF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: Why am I doing this to myself? What is this behavior truly feeding? Why or what is the purpose of these actions? Once you follow these steps and mindfully create a healthier lifestyle that is unique to you, your own version of being healthy will become a part of who you are, not just something you strive for. You will have these steps with you on your wedding day and well beyond! It will just become you naturally.

DIG DEEP TO FIND WHAT IS TRULY HOLDING YOU BACK When we continue to stick with unhealthy habits, even ones we want to change, we become stuck in them because staying there is fulfilling a need. Usually, we don’t know what that need is until we look within and be completely true, real and honest with ourselves. As a college student, it was trying to manage a full scholarship, a full social schedule, and being away from home for the first time. I was anxious and trying to control my exterior situation by controlling what I ate. Dieting fulfilled that need because when I lost weight I would like my body; however, when I gained weight I’d dislike myself. Once I started to accept my natural body type and embrace the body I have rather than change it to look like a Photoshopped celebrity, I began feeling good about my body all the time, regardless of how much I weighed or what I ate that day. Once you dig deeper and understand your why, you can work toward meeting your need for something like selfacceptance in a healthier way, too.

COZY ROMANTICS // Cover Shoot

DANIELLE HARRIS PHOTOGRAPHY

THE VISION With colder days upon us, there is a tendency to want to run inside and reflect on the warmer days behind us. However, we wanted to showcase a cozier and more romantic approach when planning a winter wedding. Bridget Davis of Bridget Davis Events did a wonderful job with bringing this vision to life! The industrial space at Biltwell coupled with romantic elements really made our heads spin with wonder at the end result.

The color palette consisted of greys, whites, and ivory with lots of greenery and hints of brown for the holiday season. The minimalist color palette really complemented the industrial style of this shoot. From the candlestick centerpieces to the groom’s berry boutonniere, we think you’ll fall in love with the festive details, too!

WEDDINGDAY 67

COVER SHOOT

THE VENUE The raw and open layout at Biltwell allows for the set-up of virtually any vision. Its historic feel, exposed brick and sliding industrial doors with dark hardwood floors and dimmed lighting all made Biltwell very alluring. There is an ethereal feel to it that many brides want on their wedding day. In addition, Biltwell provides china, flatware, glassware, platters, and some dĂŠcor an added bonus when looking at rentals for a wedding venue.

THE DRESS Bridal Superstore in Indianapolis offers a modern charm with their gowns that we wanted to pair with the industrial side of this shoot. The combination of sequins and lace coupled with the gown’s open back were complementary to the overall theme.

68

WEDDINGDAY

THE FLORAL Design Group did an incredible job curating the florals with the industrial style of this shoot. There was an array of garden roses, hydrangeas, roses, stock and ranunculus. The luscious blooms and timeless beauty of the flowers showcased the holiday greens effortlessly.

THE HAIR & MAKEUP Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Salon styled our model’s hair and makeup. Bringing the bride’s golden locks into a low bun and leaving wisps in front of her face added to the romantic atmosphere we were creating. KKBB Salon also applied her makeup, creating a soft and natural look with rosy cheeks, barely-pink lips and long lashes with lavender lids.

THE DESSERT DISPLAY We just love this festive mix of desserts, including a signature cocktail station! Drink carts are a growing trend among brides that want to offer their guests something unique while saving some dollars in their budget. Bridget is also a mixologist and created this sweet drink, Libation D’ Edison, for our heart’s desire! Using modern trends in a classic style to fit the holiday season, this cocktail was a smooth and creamy blend of plantation pineapple rum, averno amao, kina l’avian d’or quinquina aperitif, cold brew coffee and Jerry Thomas decanter bitters, topped with homemade whipped cream. Its pineapple undertones, nutty notes, bitter-sweet finish, and caffeine kick will keep your feet dancing all night long! The cake was created by Ashlynn Leigh Cakes with the icing applied in a delicate fashion and a train of roses, hydrangea, phalaenopsis orchids from Pomp&Bloom applied for the finishing touch.

THE DÉCOR We loved the use of logs as placecard holders as well as the table numbers designed as wooden cutouts. The candle lit area with the Edison bulb backdrop for the bride and groom was also a favorite. The pinecones brought in the winter feel while still staying true to the minimalist style.

THE STATIONERY Grey, wood grain and marbling were used on this particular invitation suite. The stationery designer, Just Invite Me, couldn’t have come up with a better fit for this shoot! The marble texture in the background paired with the wooden border and editorial font was the perfect rendition of modern design.

Mustard Seed Gardens

The Barn on Boundary

Mustard Seed Gardens, nestled in the heart of Noblesville Indiana, is a unique setting, rich in history with roots dating back to the mid-1800s. Located on the original Metsker Plantation is the “Olde Barn,” which has been completely converted to a one-of-a-kind wedding and event facility which offers old-world charm and modern conveniences.

The Barn on Boundary is located in East Central Indiana near Muncie. Our rustic barn gives you 5,400 sq. ft. of floor space with two levels to have your wedding ceremony upstairs while having your reception downstairs with outdoor options as well. The barn sits on 220 acres of open countryside with fields, woodlands and a large pond. The beautiful countryside setting, the elegance of chandeliers with the ambiance of cozy string lighting throughout the barn is a photographer’s dream. We take great pride in providing families with an experience and atmosphere to make their event memorable and leave a lasting impression on your guests.
